From the Inside Flap EXCERPT: Darcy glanced at the door she had come through and raised an eyebrow. "I confess, I am surprised, Miss Bennet--I had not thought you the type to indulge in an unorthodox tour of the house uninvited. Your younger sisters, perhaps, but not you." Elizabeth flushed at the implied criticism. "I did not go wandering about the servants' quarters for my own amusement!" she snapped. "I was searching for my younger sisters and found my way blocked in the hallway below. After several futile attempts to push through the crowd, I decided to find an alternative route. I had the notion to use the servants' staircase to reach the drawing room. But I was certainly not creeping about in some underhand fashion!" Darcy's eyebrow climbed higher. "You'll forgive me," he said sardonically, "but by my observation, you did exit that door in a most hurried and furtive manner." "Well, that was because--" Elizabeth stopped. "Yes?" Elizabeth felt herself flushing. "There... there was a couple on the servants' staircase--I nearly ran into them--they were... they were... um..." Darcy looked at her in amusement. "Ah, I see. They were engaged in carnal pleasures--is that what you are trying to say? 'Tis common enough at a ball. I had not thought you to be such a prude, Miss Bennet." "I am not a prude!" said Elizabeth, flushing even more. "But it is highly improper. Indeed, they were barely aware of my presence, so engrossed were they in... um... I cannot understand how they can be so oblivious to the risks of discovery!" "Can you not?" murmured Darcy, moving closer to her. "Have you never felt yourself swept along in a tide of emotion? Caught up in a moment of passion?" "If I did, I am sure I would have far better self-control than that," said Elizabeth indignantly. "Indeed?" There was a wicked gleam in Darcy's eyes now. "I wonder if you would care to put that to the test, Miss Bennet..." Elizabeth stared at him. This was not the austere, cold Darcy she knew. This was a seductive, teasing side that she had never seen before. There was something in the intent look in his eyes, the mocking tone of his voice, which set her pulse racing. She raised her chin slightly. "I am not afraid of you." Darcy reached out and caught her chin gently between a thumb and forefinger. "Oh, I do not want you to be afraid of me, Miss Bennet... I want you to desire me." Then he tipped her chin upwards and lowered his head slowly towards hers.
