My husband stared reading it and liked the author and the time frame so passed it on to me. I filled in all the missing books and have read all the books in the series now. The cast is fleshed out and interesting, the time frame and issues of the "day" are intriguing. The mysteries are complex and compelling. I await the next one anxiously!

I liked most of the characters. However, I thought the book was slow to start and could have been trimmed down from its 383 pages. There were a lot of private conversations and arguments among the policemen (which really did add to the case, just sowed that they didn't like each other), and among the members of the Burnhope and Vaughn family members. Also I didn't see the point of Lucinda Graham's part in the story. Finally, did Mrs. Colbeck really have to go to Ireland? So I think there was a lot of unnecessary padding in the story, which made it hard to get through. Still, I will try to read some older Railway Detective books, as I do like Colbeck and Lemming.[On a personal note, I write this review in honor of my father, Leonardo Oczon, who passed away on 29 January, 2016, at the age of 84. He was a voracious reader himself, particularly of Westerns; his favorite author was Louis L'Amour. He passed his great love of reading on to me.]

The characters seem to search in vain for a plot ending up where they started off. The novel starts and stops as the author gropes for some kind of of 'hook', unfortunately he never finds one. Characters do nothing to forward the the story, they are killed off randomly. The two kidnapped women stage an unsuccessful escape for no apparent reason. The dull ending I suppose reflects the pedestrian manner in which the abduction is first presented. Marston is capable of much better.
