By Amazon Customer So different from my normal but loved it!!!I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for a honest reviewTakes place in 1932 in New York City, and is about a homicide detective Charlie Doherty that has lost it all and is working on the graveyard shift during the depression. Detective Doherty answers call about a dead body in a seedy motel that changes his life and career. I felt I like I went back in time when I read this book. All the books I have read in this time period is always glamorous, this book was not it was real. Showed about the struggles the USA went through, from the riots, dirty cops, prohibition, and the depression. It wasn't emotionally heavy with these issues but I definitely connected with the time period. Hmmmm the feelings I had for detective Doherty: dislike, empathy, sorrow, irritation, amusement and hope for him. Having all these feeling for the main character makes a book better in my eyes, I hate a boring monotone main character. Slow burn was an enjoyable read and I loved the story line. It flowed nicely, all tied together well in the end and the editing was good. The only problem I had was the format on my kindle would break a sentence in half and I would have a space between it. Well worth the four hours and would make an awesome movie!!!

Having been on the take for Tammany Hall, he had been hung out to dry by his superior, Carmichael when Governor Roosevelt cleaned up Tammany. Doherty now works the night shift, writing up crimes that will be solved by the day shift. His wife has left him, taking his 2 daughters with her.One night he gets a call about a murdered woman, who turns out to be the daughter of one of the wealthiest men in New York, Mr. Van Dorn. It seems that Van Dorn's son has been kidnapped, and the daughter is dispatched to a seedy hotel with fifty thousand dollars. When she is found naked with her throat slashed, Doherty goes full steam back into detective work. There are twists and turns, aided by the taut wonderful writing by author McCauley. The style is noir, and reminds the reader of Dashiell Hammett. The story is intensely evocative of that era, and the politics of the times and news stories of the times provide you with a rich sense of New York City at the end of Tammany Hall, the Lindbergh kidnapping is used so effectively as a "new" great fear among the rich. This plays tangentially into the kidnapping of the son.Doherty is a layered character, there is introspective into his life, how he changed from a cop on the take into a man, now faced with what may the case that will restore his life in the department and perhaps maybe get his wife back. All he has to do is find the playboy son, solve his sister's murder and capture the kidnappers.I will not give anymore details of the plot, as this is a ride you have to take on your own.The only bad thing I have to say about Slow Burn is...DON'T START THIS BEFORE BED. You can't put it down.So run, do not walk to your nearest bookstore for a copy, or immediately hit that "Download" button Amazon! Worth every penny and then some. And now I'm off to buy McCauley's "Prohibition" since I can see this becoming my new addiction.
