I get the sense that we are being given a message. I can deal. I get the sense that the author is using a broad brush. Meh, the story works.Set in a near future wherein the United States have become "The People's Socialist States of America" and "The United States (revision in process)" we learn of an all too real threat of bargain basement terrorism via radioactive wastes. The concept works, it could be done. The United States is in a "Cold Civil War" with the "Peoples Socialist..." , a thinly veiled view of the modern United States as it is today. The society is perhaps a bit too shiny and new, a "perfect" system where people see to their own defense by going armed versus a system that makes Soviet Russua look like a holiday zone. The contrast is set to high when it comes to society, perhaps a good thing since it shows where both viewpoints eventually lead.The story is well done and POSSIBLE. Remember that, this story is very possible. I give it four stars because yes, I do like it even if its a bit overdone. The story is possible and the events are believable, even to the young man with the radioactive watch. I'll buy another of these books to see if the author manages to keep telling stories and avoids falling into political punditry. I'm not totally sold, but the idea is interesting and Aristotelian.Personally, I'm of the viewpoint that free people may carry arms, unfree people may not. People who allow themselves to be disarmed by any force outside of a conquering army are...worthy of contempt. So, I come to this story with a measure of agreement and a sense that the base societies are a bit oversimplified. Yet the story is decent and well worth a reading.
