Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Line Montgomery stepped out onto the front porch of his family home, inhaling the cool October air deep into his lungs. His gaze drifted over the green lawn that sloped to the tree line and beyond. The view never failed to siphon the tension from his body and soothe his soul. And he needed both right now. Leaning one shoulder against a fluted porch post, he prayed for strength to get through the day. The death of his father a month ago had shaken him to the core, and the grief at times was overwhelming. He growled and exhaled a heavy sigh at the sound of an approaching car. He couldn't handle another well-wisher dropping off food that probably wouldn't get eaten. He appreciated their kindness and concern, but he didn't have it in him today to make nice. A nondescript domestic silver sedan appeared between the old oaks that lined the long winding driveway. He didn't recognize it. In a town the size of Dover, Mississippi, it was easy to identify a person by the car they drove.Linc straightened and shoved his hands into the front pockets of his jeans, struggling to dig up a smile and a grateful attitude. The car drove past the main house and pulled to a stop a hundred yards away in front of the cottage that stood under the oak grove. The cottage had been his grandmother's home in her later years, and was used infrequently as a guesthouse now. No one was supposed to be there.Jogging down the front steps, he strode across the lawn, watching as a woman and a young boy emerged from the sedan. She walked confidently onto the porch and unlocked the front door. He had no idea what was going on, but he wasn't about to let it continue."Hey!"The woman let the boy enter the cottage but didn't respond to his call. He quickened his steps. "Hey. What are you doing?" He reached the steps before she could disappear inside. "This is private property."She turned to face him and he felt a stunned moment of awareness. Her emerald-green eyes were bright and inquisitive. Her strawberry blonde hair was held back on the sides with barrettes, allowing the wavy strands to tumble down behind her shoulders. He yanked his thoughts back into place. "You have no right to be here. So I suggest you hand me the key and leave." The green eyes darkened and she raised her chin, a slight smile touching her lips."Hello, Mr. Linc. As a matter of fact, I do have a right to be here. I'm your new tenant. My son and I will be staying in the cottage for the next few months."Linc narrowed his eyes, sorting through the information. Only employees of his family's electrical contracting business called him Mr. Linc. It saved confusion between all the Montgomerys who worked there. His dad, Dale, himself and his two brothers, Seth and Gil. But he didn't recognize this woman, and she wasn't the type he'd forget."I don't know anything about that. No one told me.Do you have a lease you can show me? Because if you don't, you'll need to leave. And if you refuse I'll have the sheriff out here to escort you off the property."The boy he'd seen earlier rejoined the woman, whom Linc assumed was his mother. Standing close to her side and eyeing him with a hint of fear in his hazel eyes."Mom?""It's all right, Evan. This is Mr. Linc. His family owns the cottage. We're just discussing some of the details. You go back inside. I'll be there in a moment."The boy nodded, then smiled up at his mother. "Mom, there's a river behind the house and tons of good climbing trees."Linc spoke without thinking. "It's a creek. The Sandy Fork Creek."The woman and boy stared at him with puzzled expressions. He was just trying to be correct. The woman nudged the boy back inside, then came toward him, stopping at the edge of the top step and waiting. She raised her eyebrows. "If you'll allow me, I'll get the lease from my car and put your mind at ease."For a reason he wasn't sure of, he refused to move. He wanted to challenge her. She was up to something, and he wasn't about to make it easy for her. He'd mastered the icy glare, the one that would send workers scattering back to their jobs, and difficult builders to bend to his will. He crossed his arms over his chest. "You do that."She smiled as if dealing with a naughty child, then stepped deftly around him along the edge of the steps, brushing up against his arm and releasing a flowery scent that reminded him of the Confederate jasmine that grew along the side of the main house. He held his ground. Waiting. He kept his back to her, intending to show her who was in charge."Here you are. All signed and notarized."She spoke from behind him, forcing him to turn and face her. He felt a flicker of admiration for her gutsy determination. Slowly he pivoted. She held out the paper and he took it with a quick swipe. He scanned the document twice to make sure he understood what he was reading. His mom had rented the cottage to this woman—a Gemma Butler—for free. Why? The lease was in order. His mother was the local real estate broker and she knew her stuff. The woman held her hands clasped in front of her, her expression calm and a bit superior, elevating his blood pressure. He didn't like being made to look foolish. "Why is my mother letting you stay here free of charge?"The woman lifted the lease from his hand with thumb and forefinger, then folded it and slipped it into her shoulder bag. "Perhaps you should ask her." She moved past him and up onto the porch. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to get my son settled. I have to start work in the morning. Have a nice day, Mr. Linc."Linc watched the woman disappear inside the house and shut the door with a quiet snap. He dragged his fingers across his jaw. Great. This was the perfect ending to a lousy week. He'd been in Biloxi the past six days overseeing a mishandled construction project. When he'd returned home he'd found his mother gone to Little Rock to visit her sister. Now she'd taken on a tenant and had told him nothing about it.He understood his mother was hurting and confused. Losing their father so suddenly to an aneurism had rocked their world. But she should have stayed here at home where she could be taken care of.With his father gone, Linc was not only the head of the family now, but the head of Montgomery Electrical Contractors, as well. The job should have been shared with his brother Gil, but he had left shortly after the funeral for Mobile to oversee a project there and to deal with an urgent personal matter. The responsibility of the company weighed heavily on Linc. He'd never realized how much he'd relied on his dad for advice and direction.Jogging up the steps at the main house, Linc pushed through the front door and headed to the office at the far side of the large home. Pulling his cell phone from his pocket he dialed his mother, pacing the room as he waited. He was worried about her. It wasn't like her to run off to visit relatives without telling anyone, and it certainly wasn't like her to rent the cottage to someone outside the family. He'd lived in it himself for a while before getting his own place. He barely let his mother say hello before he launched his barrage of questions. "You want to tell me about this woman in the cottage? Who is she and what's going on?""Hello, dear. Oh, she's there already. Good. Did you help her get settled in?"Linc pressed his lips together to keep from saying something disrespectful. "No, ma'am, because I had no idea that we had a tenant. It would have been nice to have some warning, Mom.""I'm sorry, dear. I meant to tell you, but I was in a hurry to get up here to see Mary and I guess I forgot.""Who is she?""Gemma Butler.""I saw that on the lease. Who is she?""From our accounting office. She needed to be closer to Dover when she starts work so I offered her the cottage."Linc sank into the chair behind the desk, frustration tightening his chest. "Mom. You're not making any sense. What work?" Silence. "Mom?""Well, honey. I should have told you, but I was—""In a hurry to get away. I got that." Why was she so anxious to leave the home she'd shared with his father? She should be here, working through her grief, not running off to her sisters."I resigned from the Christmas Event Committee. I just can't face it this year. So I recommended Gemma, and the Chamber of Commerce hired her. She's going to be wonderful."He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desktop. Trying to grasp the changes. "Mom, you've always done the Christmas events.""I know, but not this year. Surely you understand. With your father gone…""I know." Nothing was the same with Dad gone. The world had tilted and they were all just trying to keep their balance. "When are you coming home?""I don't know. Next weekend, maybe. Have you talked to Gil?""No. Have you?""Yes. His attorney is still digging through legal tangles, but he's hopeful. The court should rule in his favor since he's the legal parent.""Let's hope so. We both know the court system can often make poor decisions. I'm praying they won't this time."Linc heard his mom hum her agreement, then encouraged her once more to come home before ending the call and tossing the cell onto the desk. His gaze landed on the family photo sitting on one corner. A short while ago they were all together. Now they were missing their most important member. Losing his dad had made him realize how much he valued his family, how important it was to stay close and keep the ties strong.Unfortunately, the opposite was happening. His siblings seemed to be drifting away and he didn't know how to stop it. His sister Bethany had already left the fold years ago to pursue her dancing career in New York. Gil had moved to Mobile temporarily. Now his mother had quit her job and fled to her sisters. Seth was still here and so was his youngest sister, Victoria, but they'd been grieving, too, and he had no idea how to help them. He had no idea how to help himself. But his dad would have.Pushing back from the desk, he stood and went to the window. He had a perfect view of the cottage, but saw no sign of the woman or boy. He searched his mind for a memory of her, but he couldn't recall ever seeing her in the office. He'd look her up on the employee files—better safe than sorry.Turning from the window, he thought about her gutsy behavior. She'd stood up to him. Most women smiled and flirted. There was something different about Mrs. Butler. She looked all soft and feminine in her white lacy top and simple tan slacks. But underneath she was strong. Which was surprising since she wasn't very tall. Five-four tops. He stood an even six feet and she'd barely reached his shoulder. He huffed out a breath and rubbed his forehead. He didn't need any more surprises. He had enough to deal with his father's passing and fighting to stay on top of things. He went to the window again, irritated to realize he was wondering where the woman was.Gemma peeked out the master bedroom window of the small two-bedroom cottage at the stately mansion across the lawn. Linc Montgomery had disappeared inside several minutes ago, but her heart was only now settling into a normal rhythm. She'd watched him march across the grass, all broad shoulders and strong legs, unable to take her eyes off him. The man was positively imposing. Not to mention overbearing and arrogant. But she had to admit that despite his cold and egotistical demeanor, the Lord had blessed him with a physique that was hard not to admire. He'd been blessed in the good-looks department, too. With his dark chocolate hair, deep blue eyes framed by thick lashes and a sharply defined jaw—he was definitely easy on the eyes. Too bad he was so obnoxious. She'd only worked as an accountant for Montgomery Electrical for five months. She didn't necessarily enjoy her work, but the atmosphere had made up for it. The owner, Dale Montgomery, had made everyone feel valued and important. He knew each person's name, knew their children and spouses and never failed to offer prayer for those in need. She'd admired and respected him a great deal. His passing had left all the employees bereft. When Mr. Linc and Mr. Gil had taken over, things had changed. She understood they were grieving, but she couldn't see herself working for Mr. Linc. Ever. He strode through the offices as if he was always on his way to someplace more important, only granting a nod to those he passed. He never smiled or offered a word of conversation. She'd been a bit surprised Linc hadn't recognized her, but she probably shouldn't be. She doubted he noticed anyone but himself. It would have been nicer if Mr. Gil had been here when she arrived. He would have at least given her a pleasant welcome. Mr. Seth, too, would have been nice. He worked with the electricians and rarely came into the office, but the few times he had he'd been warm and friendly like his father. She knew nothing of the two sisters other than the tidbits she'd picked up from coworkers.Francie was the one she truly adored. The matriarch of the Montgomery family was sweet, kind and generous. People were drawn to her warm personality and her caring heart. She owed the woman for freeing her from the accounting job and giving her a fresh start, and Gemma was determined to do a good job. She only wished Francie was here to talk to. She needed a little encouragement to meet with the president of the Dover Chamber of Commerce tomorrow.Taking over as director of Christmas events was a big job and the Chamber was expecting her to create holiday attractions that would draw visitors and increase revenue. She clasped her hands beneath her chin and smiled. This was her second chance to make good.Losing her event-planning business in Charlotte, North Carolina, last year had been devastating. Made more painful by the knowledge that her trusted friend and business partner, Darren Scofield, had betrayed her by stealing away her clients, then opening his own event business and leaving her with a worthless company. The fallout had been brutal. She'd been forced to return to her parents' home while she regrouped. A decision she deeply regretted. Her son had paid a high price for her mistake.Evan peeked into her room. "Mom, can I go look at the river…I mean, the creek?""Not right now, sweetie. I have to finish unpacking, and I want to go with you to check it out. Are you all settled into your room?"He nodded, the light in his hazel eyes revealing his excitement. "I can see the creek from my bed. This will be a cool place to explore."

In the latest book of the "Home to Dover" series, we meet a young woman, Gemma Butler and her eight-year old son. Gemma has come to town to work on a Christmas event for the town through the chamber. She's hired by the Montgomery Matriarch, who has stepped down from the annual event following the devastating death of her husband. Gemma has some bad history from her past that she'd rather forget. She wants to raise her son and be an event planner.Enter eldest Montgomery son (oldest of five kids), Linc. Linc seems hard and uncaring, but Gemma soon sees that he is hurting and losing control of everything in his life. Linc tries to chase Gemma off his family's land, only to learn that his mother has hired her to make a lot of changes in his Christmas traditions. Linc takes to both the mother and son, but he refuses to give into his feelings.I enjoyed reading about the struggles both characters had. I especially "enjoyed" Linc's struggles. I'm not a big fan of change and felt so sorry for the things he changed. I still agree with him on the parade - some traditions just need to stay! Family leaving, traditions changing, and new faces coming to the small town would be enough to drive anyone over the edge. And Gemma's tory was heart-wrenching. I came to hate her mother with a passion, and hope that in the future Lunc will protect both wife and son from these awful people!I was hoping Gil had a story coming up. I'm excited it will be released in April, but so saddened it's so far away!

By Amazon Customer So different from my normal but loved it!!!I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for a honest reviewTakes place in 1932 in New York City, and is about a homicide detective Charlie Doherty that has lost it all and is working on the graveyard shift during the depression. Detective Doherty answers call about a dead body in a seedy motel that changes his life and career. I felt I like I went back in time when I read this book. All the books I have read in this time period is always glamorous, this book was not it was real. Showed about the struggles the USA went through, from the riots, dirty cops, prohibition, and the depression. It wasn't emotionally heavy with these issues but I definitely connected with the time period. Hmmmm the feelings I had for detective Doherty: dislike, empathy, sorrow, irritation, amusement and hope for him. Having all these feeling for the main character makes a book better in my eyes, I hate a boring monotone main character. Slow burn was an enjoyable read and I loved the story line. It flowed nicely, all tied together well in the end and the editing was good. The only problem I had was the format on my kindle would break a sentence in half and I would have a space between it. Well worth the four hours and would make an awesome movie!!!

Having been on the take for Tammany Hall, he had been hung out to dry by his superior, Carmichael when Governor Roosevelt cleaned up Tammany. Doherty now works the night shift, writing up crimes that will be solved by the day shift. His wife has left him, taking his 2 daughters with her.One night he gets a call about a murdered woman, who turns out to be the daughter of one of the wealthiest men in New York, Mr. Van Dorn. It seems that Van Dorn's son has been kidnapped, and the daughter is dispatched to a seedy hotel with fifty thousand dollars. When she is found naked with her throat slashed, Doherty goes full steam back into detective work. There are twists and turns, aided by the taut wonderful writing by author McCauley. The style is noir, and reminds the reader of Dashiell Hammett. The story is intensely evocative of that era, and the politics of the times and news stories of the times provide you with a rich sense of New York City at the end of Tammany Hall, the Lindbergh kidnapping is used so effectively as a "new" great fear among the rich. This plays tangentially into the kidnapping of the son.Doherty is a layered character, there is introspective into his life, how he changed from a cop on the take into a man, now faced with what may the case that will restore his life in the department and perhaps maybe get his wife back. All he has to do is find the playboy son, solve his sister's murder and capture the kidnappers.I will not give anymore details of the plot, as this is a ride you have to take on your own.The only bad thing I have to say about Slow Burn is...DON'T START THIS BEFORE BED. You can't put it down.So run, do not walk to your nearest bookstore for a copy, or immediately hit that "Download" button Amazon! Worth every penny and then some. And now I'm off to buy McCauley's "Prohibition" since I can see this becoming my new addiction.

Too cute! :D By Lindsey Z. from Books for Christian Girls About this book:“After spending her childhood in an orphanage, Millie Longfellow is determined to become the best nanny the East Coast has ever seen. Unfortunately, her playfulness and enthusiasm tend to bring about situations that have employers looking askance at her methods. After her most recent dismissal, Millie is forced to return yet again to an employment agency.Everett Mulberry has suddenly and quite unexpectedly found himself responsible for three children he’s never met. Attempting fatherhood while also pacifying the less-than-thrilled socialite he intends to marry is made even more complicated when the children scare off every nanny he hires. About to depart for Newport, Rhode Island, for the summer, he’s desperate for competent childcare. At wit’s end with both Millie and Everett, the employment agency gives them one last chance–with each other. Everett is wary of Millie’s penchant for disaster, and she’s not entirely keen on another snobby, grumpy employer, but they’re both out of options. As Millie falls in love with her mischievous charges and tries to stay one step ahead of them, Everett is more focused on achieving the coveted status of society’s upper echelons. As he investigates the suspicious circumstances surrounding the children’s parents’ death, will it take the loss of those he loves to learn whose company he truly wants for the rest of his life?”Series: Book #2 in the “A Class of Their Own” series. With a writing voice all her own, Jen Turano has penned another imaginative tale that I believe is her best yet!Millie Longfellow endeared herself to me in After a Fashion and I have been anxiously awaiting her story. This quirky character elicited non-stop smiles and laughter as I read In Good Company. I loved Millie’s creativity and charm as she dealt with her mischievous charges and her employer. Everett Mulberry was a bit obtuse and frustrating at times, especially with regard to the dreadful Caroline Dixon, but I enjoyed his transformation as the story progressed. Full of humor and heart, In Good Company is a must read! I adore Jen Turano and can’t wait for more of her fantastic stories!I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. I appreciate the opportunity to read this story and share my thoughts.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. In Good Company and Bad . . . . By Andrea NewberryTubbs I had the best time hanging out with Millie and Everett, and of course the three little kids that have been entrusted to Everett. I love books that have kids in them, they add such a fun dimension to the story, and these kids were a hoot. In true Jen style this book was laugh out loud funny, with a little mystery to add intrigue. With Jen's books I find myself wanting to jump into the pages and be apart of the story. While this is the second book in her A Class of Their Own, it can stand alone and is a perfect summer read!Highly recommended!

Bachelor Books are classic for a reason.I was thrilled to be able to download the Upton Sinclair collections, and I am slowly getting to each of the books. The books were referred to in some of the modern science books I read. That alone made me curious.I am sure there are professional reviewers out there who have already said what needed to be said in their reviews for all of Upton Sinclair's works. I won't even attempt a review of the novel's content.I just love that it was free and available to me, a Kindle user.

In her debut novel, Karen Evancic weaves this symbolic bird into an endearing and inspiring tale about two women whose roots start out in the rich Kentucky soil but whose life paths quickly take very different turns. Unbeknownst to the other, each woman will find a way to understand what conviction, family, and perseverance are really all about. It's 1954 and Lillie lay alone on an empty hospital ward in the small farming town of Franklin, Kentucky. Abandoned there by her husband and left to die, she begs for death, welcoming it with every haggard breath. Day after day, when death does not knock, she lay with mountains of regret and without any hope for redemption. But she soon discovers that fate sometimes has other plans. Lillie is befriended by a young nurse named Elizabeth who proves to her that though she may lay dying, she still has importance and purpose. While recounting her life stories to Elizabeth, Lillie is visited by a small red bird, who whispers a sweet song in her ear and reminds her, and in turn Elizabeth, that it's never too late to change the course of your life.Catherine's journey from a sharecropper's daughter in Kentucky, to a depression era wife in Detroit, to an up and coming entrepreneur in Los Angeles is riddled with adventure, heartache and disappointment. But the feisty Catherine takes each and every heartbreak as a challenge to be conquered and an experience to be relished. Save one. Desperate to become a mother, Catherine's greatest struggle is one over which she has no control and requires something of her that she wrestles to embrace. Faith. As her exciting life unfolds she slowly journeys towards a deep abiding love and an understanding that sometimes life is just as it should be.What these two vastly different women have common will delight you and the way in which their paths eventually cross will fill you with hope, faith, and a deep understanding of what love truly is.

When A Red Bird Flies, by Karen Evancic

Review Wow. Just wow. I have not read such a heart-wrenching story in a long time, if ever. The writing is superb, with careful attention to details. This book is definitely not for the weak at heart, as it defines the absolute best and the absolute worst of humanity. Readers will definitely walk away from the experience in awe of the inner strength and character of these two beautiful women. - Sheri Hoyte for Reader Views (11/15)Evancic is not afraid to get deep inside her characters' hearts and minds. The end result is a powerful novel that will have readers returning in their thoughts to think further about life long after the book's last page has been read. As a first novel, When a Red Bird Flies has garnered a great deal of praise. It is rare for a book to receive so many honors, and in this reader's opinion, they are all well-deserved. --- Tyler R. Tichelaar, Ph.D., and award-winning author of Narrow Lives and The Best Place This endearing and heart wrenching story is speckled with whimsy and joyfulness - it will take you deep into the heart of sun-kissed Kentucky tobacco farmland, pre-World War II Metro Detroit and burgeoning post-war Los Angeles. -Rachel Zohn, Freelance WriterEvancic weaves together a beautiful picture of love, perseverance, and the hope of renewal that will touch your heart. -Leah Andrews, ArtistThis story will make you believe no matter how many challenges fate sends your way, the human spirit can triumph. -Melissa Yubeta, College of Liberal Arts and Science, Arizona State UniversityA beautifully crafted story that explores how strength, hope, love, and determination can be born of hardship and adversity. - Stephanie Scott, Business Consultant

From the Back Cover It's 1954 and Lillie's hard life has led to this; abandoned to a lonely hospital bed, ripped away from anything that matters to her.  As her disease fully embraces her she befriends a young nurse named Elizabeth who helps her find a way to face her awful past and protect those she leaves behind. On the other side of the country, Catherine believes she has broken free of her squalid Kentucky farm roots and moved on to life in a big city.  But through all of life's twists and turns, and even as love gives Catherine a second chance, she wonders if she will ever fulfill her deepest longing.

About the Author Karen Evancic is a part time registered nurse in obstetrics, a full time mommy to three children, and a proud Air Force wife. Karen Evancic wrote an amazing historical fiction based on our family. I knew how the story ended, and I couldn't put it down. If you love books that leave you wanting more, this is the one for you. I am not just saying this because it is written by my sister, but saying this because it is a beautifully written book.By the way that beautiful woman on the cover is my Grandma, who is turning 97 this year. My whole family knows she is pretty amazing, and now a lot of others will hear her story. Amazing Job goes out to my sister Karen Evancic, and those that helped her compile the stories to make this a reality. WELL DONE!

By militarymom74 This is a beautiful, heart-wrenching and heart-warming story that captures some wonderful and unique characters who make you understand that strength comes in all forms. It's also offers an interesting glimpse into the past, transporting the reader to the deep south, to a time when domestic violence wasn't always seen as something others should get involved in. It reminds us that not everything thing was rosy in the past - sometimes families harbor difficult and hurtful histories. I loved this book, I hope you do too!

The plumbing explanation had no photos or diagrams, it was literally "place elbow, then another elbow, then a t, then two more elbows for the syphon" whhaaaaaatt?

Please take this as constuctive critique only. The concrete blocks do not have much load capacity as shown. They should be rotated 90 degrees and placed with a solid block on bottom to distribute the soil load. Also use a solid board on top for distribution of the load.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Covered the basics By Kiltit It covers the basics and shows illustrations as to what goes into an aquaponics system. It however, leaves me asking questions about the little details. How many fish does this support? How many grow beds can you run off of that size fish pond? Is this a permanent location or is there going to be a cover built for winter? But, for a general how-to, it does the job to get someone excited and wanting to try something.Mike

Helpful guide for foraging By Susan Smith As a newbie in foraging I've learned quite a few things from this book. The book is successful to make me understand the basic ideas of foraging, the caution I should take while selecting and using plants and obviously taught me about some uncommon herbs I didn't know were useful at all ! The images after every herb's description was really really helpful and made it easier to get a visual idea about the plants.I hope this book helps other newbies out there as it helped me.

This book helps every reader to identify which plants are edible and which aren't. I find the safety rules of foraging very important too. Plants can help us nourish our body but at the same time when picking the wrong ones it can also do harm. So better read up so as not to be sorry later on.Disclaimer: I got this book for free in exchange of an honest and unbiased review.

By Allison Randy I have never tried foraging in my life, but I am playing this app where I always encounter this term so I became curious about it. Foraging in my understanding is wild hunting for edible plants. It is exciting but risky at the same time, hence a book like this is helpful. The book provides a comprehensive guide in foraging. I will appreciate more scientific based proofs to make sure.

“An earnest…debut novel of ideas. This historical why-dunit…carries some real emotional weight.” - Kirkus Reviews “Self-Deliverance is a novel that touches upon the historical and fictional/imaginative lives of its fascinating characters. Otterman writes with authority and elegance and this book has it all—desire, love, illness, intrigue, loss. Yet nothing here is gratuitous. The prose is descriptive and lovingly wrought.” - Martha Rhodes, Founding Editor and Director of Four Way Books Arthur Koestler slouched in his living room armchair, dead with a whiskey glass in his hand. His wife Cynthia was found lying lifeless on the sofa, facing him. Two empty wine glasses, a jar of honey, and an empty bottle of Tuinal—a powerful sedative—stood between them on the coffee table. Double-suicide was suspected, but Westminster Court Coroner Jack Candrel was troubled. Why did Cynthia, twenty-five years younger than Arthur and in good health, kill herself? A bold work of historical fiction, Self-Deliverance: The Death and Life of Arthur Koestler, explores the circumstances and unexpected consequences of the real-life Koestler suicides. At the heart of the book is a love story, not just of Arthur and his much-younger wife, but of the lead investigator Jack, who’s in a long and increasingly loveless marriage, and Kristie, a world-class ballerina and estranged daughter of Arthur Koestler. Rita, the assisting investigator, and Frankel, a journalist looking into the double-suicide, also develop a passionate, yet combustible, affair. Otterman’s work taps into the heart of loneliness, isolation, and the pitfalls of marriage. His book is not so much one of romance, but of the mind games that unfold for the participants. Sex, love, and intimacy take on new meanings as the Koestler investigation deepens—and the role love plays in death and life is unearthed.

Self-Deliverance: The Death and Life of Arthur Koestler, by Bernard Otterman

About the Author Self-Deliverance: The Death and Life of Arthur Koestler is Bernard Otterman’s debut novel. His award-winning short stories and poems have appeared in New Millennium Writings, Word/Slovo Poetry, and Jewish Currents, among other magazines and journals. And he has presented his work in lectures and discussions at universities and bookstores across the United States and Australia. Otterman, born in Poland, is a child Holocaust survivor. His prior writings, including Inmate 1818 and Other Stories (Liber Novus Press 2014), examine history’s darkest hour—the Holocaust. The Jewish Daily Forward said: “Otterman’s willingness to engage creatively with the metaphysical questions raised by the Holocaust should be applauded.” For Martha Rhodes, Founding Editor and Director of Four Way Books, Otterman’s “observant narrators see the world, as it is, surreal, yes, otherworldly, unbearable, and somehow wry.” At the age of three, he and his parents escaped Lodz, Poland, and fled to Warsaw by moving from ghetto to ghetto, only to be interned in several labor camps. Separated from his father, Otterman and his mother escaped the train line headed for Auschwitz, fled and hid for six months as fugitives in the Polish countryside until Russian troops liberated Poland in January 1945. His father was first sent by train to Auschwitz, then immediately moved to a work camp in Germany. He also survived, and the family was reunited in Lodz in September 1945 through displaced persons listings posted by the Red Cross. They lived in Germany until coming to the United States in 1951. Otterman earned a PhD in natural sciences and served on the engineering faculties at Northeastern and Hofstra Universities. He resides in Old Westbury, New York, and more information can be found at www.bernardotterman.com.

Bold, Thoughtful, Intelligent Investigation Into the Nature of Love By Eli Mandel Bernard Otterman makes his fiction debut with this bold, thoughtful, intelligent investigation into the nature of love.Book-ended by the mystery posed by the double suicide of Arthur and Cynthia Koestler - but wait! Was it a double suicide? Maybe it was a suicide/homicide!Told from the omniscient point of view, Otterman takes us into the lives and minds of the coroner and assistant coroner as they investigate the Koestler's suicides - and their own love lives; what lessons can they draw from their own experiences that will inform their investigation? What can they learn from Koestler's life and philosophies that can enrich their own lives?Does good sex make a relationship? Is there more to a relationship? Enough to make someone want to kill themselves? These are the questions raised in Self-Deliverance: The Death and Life of Arthur Koestler and are ultimately, with the help of the the two coroner's personal love journeys and their investigations into the death and life of Arthur Koestler, answered. As a bonus, readers familiar with Otterman's short stories will be happy to see that Sam, the angry young boy enamored with Nazi ideology, grew up into a healthy young man, a journalist, researcher and expert on Arthur Koestler.

By Eric Brach I was lucky enough to get to read a number of drafts of Self-Deliverance, and I'm so impressed with how this book has turned out.The tension between Jack and Rita in the police station (and let's not forget Frankel!) reads quite well, and I'm not giving anything away by saying that the mystery surrounding the death of Arthur Koestler and his wife only deepens as the book goes on.Highly recommended to fans of the period and the place.

Everyone has heard of horse whisperers and dog whisperers ... in fact, there are humans who claim to whisper to nearly any kind of animal you can think of. But humans are not the only ones who claim to whisper to other species. No, indeed. Surprisingly, cats claim to do it too, but they whisper to HUMANS! Unfortunately for the cats, too often humans are not sensitive and attuned to hearing and understanding what these cats are communicating. "Tales of Cats Who Whisper to Humans" are the funny, touching, and uplifting stories of cats who used their natural, but sharply-honed, human-whispering abilities to influence chosen people to take them from the dangerous subsistence life of homelessness to loving homes. Yes, as they affirm, it is cats that choose humans, not the other way around. These true tales, which are transcribed word-for-word by a human cat-whisperer, the "author," show the many ways these cats “talked” to specific people to hopefully breakthrough the cognitive blockage to achieve their individual rescue-related goals. From the cats' own lips the reader learns how these felines interpreted each human's feelings, behaviors, and body language; how they used their own body language and thoughts to dynamite their way through to conscious awareness; how the humans responded to the cats’ communication efforts, for good or ill; and how the cats then worked to foster the respect and affection required for their ongoing, mutually-beneficial human-cat relationships. Readers from 12 years old on will enjoy and learn from what these average cats, who happened to be homeless, had to do to convince the sometimes emotionally-deaf humans to snap out of their mindlessness, rescue them, and happily share their bed and board with them. Cat owners and ailurophiles will nod and smile as they identify immediately with these cats’ techniques and their success.

Are you ready for something fresh and different in a young adult novel? Counter-cultural, even? The new six-part serial entitled The King’s Puzzle turns established conventions inside out. For one thing, it’s mostly told from a boy’s perspective. And, be warned—if you are looking for simplistic language and a predictable plot with the usual suspects for heroes and villains, The King’s Puzzle is not for you. However, if you enjoy beautiful writing that combines strong character relationships with a riveting storyline, then you have found your next book to read. A pair of 16-year-old homeschoolers, Angus and Amanda, attempt to solve a mystery within a mystery. The duo may even remind you on your own teenaged years, albeit with a lot more excitement. A treasure hunt, a love triangle, a cold case going back to 1939. A coming-of-age saga. One or more villains, in the shadows. And not the usual suspects. In The King’s Puzzle, Angus and Amanda come up against the modern-day liberal state in all its intrusiveness. The police, fire authorities, the public broadcaster, a feminist organization, green energy interests, a female sexual predator in the school system. They, and more, align themselves against the teenagers to prevent them from solving the mystery that presents itself in the opening scene: A letter from Buckingham Palace states that Angus’s grandfather, at the age of ten in 1939, fashioned a treasure hunt for King George VI to solve while touring Canada by train that year. To obtain the treasure, The King needed to solve a number of homemade puzzles. The mystery, which Her Majesty The Queen would like solved on behalf of her late father, is why Angus’s grandfather failed to keep a rendezvous with The King at a Royal Train stop in Ontario. The setting for The King’s Puzzle is a rural estate in Ontario, amid maple trees, a trout stream, and a Canadian Pacific Railway line that meanders through the hills. Secluded, quiet—and threatened by a wind turbine development. Incidentally, the owner of the property is a 38-year-old blonde, considered the sexiest female politician in North America. She’s in trouble at the hands of the same cast plaguing Angus and Amanda. In fact, she seeks their help in solving her own 1939 family mystery, linked to The King’s Puzzle, which is the moment the teens’ problems magnify. Throughout the story, the lingering question that penetrates Angus’s and Amanda’s imaginations is—why did his ten-year-old grandfather fail to meet The King in 1939? To find out why attempting to solve a family mystery at the behest of the head of the Royal Family—and Canada’s head of state—unleashes the fury of the entrenched liberal establishment onto a pair of homeschooled 16-year-olds, begin by downloading your free copy of The King’s Puzzle, Book 1. Then, continue through the next five!

The characters was well-developed and the story was engaging. However, personally this is not the type of romance that I personally like but it is good to be exposed to new stories and plots, which this book definitely have. Lastly all I can say is give it a try it's a short story so no harm.
