4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. “The reigning queens of historical fiction” …… hmmmmm By Karl Wiggins Okay, the book description tells us this is a “A prequel to the Imp of Eye” and that it “begins the Renaissance Sojourner Series,” so we’re aware there’s more to come. What I wasn’t expecting was for it to grind to a halt without even dropping down through the gears first. What a scam! I hate that!A ‘prequel’ is a literary work whose story precedes that of a previous work. It doesn’t necessarily follow the same plot, but it does set the scene. Godfather II, for instance, is the prequel to The Godfather (Godfather I), but here’s the rub, as a film it is INDIVIDUALLY COMPLETE. And when you pick up a book – be it prequel or sequel – you expect it to be complete of itself. Is that too much to ask?But this book isn’t complete. It just stops with ….. well, I’m not going to spoil the plot, but trust me, it just stops 75% through the actual narrative. The other 25% is taken up with an excerpt from ‘The Imp of Eye’I hate that!As to the story itself; It’s not bad. Not great by any means – and I certainly wouldn’t dash out to purchase another of these author’s books – but not bad. It was a little repetitive, but the plot moves … kind of.The book description tells us about Alys, who longs to paint like the artists in St Michael Queenhithe. And I believe James Thornhill, painter of the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral, was the painter in question as Sir Christopher Wren rebuilt St Michael after The Great Fire of London.So the scene is set for what I expected to be a little girl with remarkable artistic talent who finds a way to express this after she’s taken into the employ of the Duchess of Gloucester.Well not really. There are a couple of sentences discussing Alys drawing the head butler, or whoever he is, on a slate, but that’s it. The real story involves the Duchesses attempts to fall pregnant. It’s written in a pseudo Mediaeval English style, which is sort of quaint, but as far as the description of Kristin Gleeson and Moonyeen Blakey (great name) as “The reigning queens of historical fiction,” I think that’s a bit far-fetched. For a Queen of historical fiction, give me Jana Petken any day.2 Stars for ripping the reader off with a ‘prequel’ that is not complete on its own merit. In fact, you know those TV dramas, the ones that are on three or four nights in a week, or maybe once a week for a month, and you really get into it, and when it finishes you look at your spouse and say, “Eh? What happened there? Did he die? Did they get the money? Did he marry her? I bloody hate these TV dramas that don’t end properly!” You know those shows, right? Well ‘A Trick of Fate’ is very much like that.

Delightful Introduction to a Series By Elizabeth Horton-Newton, Author A Trick of Fate (The Renaissance Sojourner Series Book 0) by Kristin GleesonWith a combination of language and settings Kristin Gleeson transports the reader back to the 15th century in her beautifully written “A Trick of Fate.” Alys is a young girl left alone when her brother Hal goes to sea and her mother dies. Through an accidental run-in with a noblewoman, her life is changed dramatically. Alys goes from struggling to survive on the charity of neighbors to living as a servant in the palace of a local Duke and his wife, the Duchess. At first this seems like a blessing but as this short story progresses it becomes apparent that even when things seem fortunate, there may be unexpected dangers. When the Duchess takes young Alys into her service things seem to be looking up for the girl. However this apparent stroke of good luck has a dark and potentially dangerous side.Historically vibrant, Gleeson’s feel for the language of the time is excellent. It’s easy to visualize Alys as she develops from a young ragamuffin to a Lady’s Maid in a noblewoman’s court. While this is a very short introduction to the series, it sets the tone for books to come and leaves the reader eager for more. I look forward to Alys’ further adventures with her new and strange friend Barbabas and the cast of characters in this delightful novella.

The story focuses on Alys, an orphan girl who, thanks to a string of events, finds herself in the employ of the local Duchess.Kristin Gleeson does a wonderful job bringing Alys' world to life, presenting it in a way that is both educational and entertaining. The mystical aspect only adds to the already rich atmosphere.This is a charming introduction to what promises to be an enjoyable series.
