The Shiloh Series books 1-3 includes the following novels: They Met at Shiloh, A Certain Death, and Iuka to Corinth. This set covers the year 1862 in the Civil War from the early campaign leading up to the battle of Shiloh, the siege of Corinth, and lastly the battles of Iuka and Corinth that capped off the late fall campaigns in Tennessee and Mississippi. They Met at Shiloh is the catalyst moment for tens of thousands of soldiers as their first horrific encounter with the reality of what the war truly is. On Shiloh's fields a disgraced Methodist minister, a Mississippi youth, a rough Texan, and a Missourian Unionist contend not only with their own demons but also with the clash of arms that swirls around them, altering courses and lives forever. A Certain Death is what the survivors of Shiloh know is coming as the Federal army at Pittsburg Landing prepares to march on Corinth, MS. The Confederate siege lines are long and well prepared and a direct assault will leave many more comrades dead upon the fields. For Confederates captured at Shiloh, their journey takes them to Ohio and a miserable existence behind ten foot high log fencing. A trip home for one to accept a commission and a plan to break out of prison for a handful of Confederates bring foes together in unlikely accord. Iuka to Corinth will complete a plan by Confederates to wrest control of Northern Mississippi from Union control and trap an army between two superior forces. An escaped Confederate and the slave that got away come face to face on a river boat and the Confederate has a dilemma: finish escaping or finish what he'd started before the war. A recruiting trip from Ohio to deliver new volunteers down the Cumberland River to Nashville is diverted to the Tennessee River and to a familiar place: Pittsburg Landing. The boat the Confederates are on is diverted to the same location. The Union crises in Mississippi could wreck freedom for the runaway slave, threaten life and limb for his captor, and bring untimely death to a newly minted chaplain and his brother.

There were no "good guys" or "bad guys," and no attempt to address the big moral issues posed by the Civil War. Whatever side your ancestors took in that conflict, the one thing that's incontrovertible is that the suffering and death inflicted on the soldiers on both sides was more terrible than anything ever experienced in war up to that time. The battle of Shiloh was the bloodiest battle of the war from Fort Sumter through the spring of 1862, though it was eclipsed by the battle of Antietam some months later. The chaos and killing come through loud and clear, drowning out the "Bonnie Blue Flag" and "Battle Cry of Freedom." Yes. It's a good read.

By Marla A Burke You know, you can read all kinds of statistics about our Civil War like how many people died in any given campaign or that the battlefield was soaked in blood but until it is somehow personalized, you don't really get a sense of the enormity of it. Phillip Bryant, by using the detailed experiences of the common soldier, puts you on the firing line. Your shoulders are touching those of your Pards, you are seeing the sea of the enemy before you, the cacophony of the battle before you blasts your ears, and your throat tightens at the stench and body parts. You suddenly understand both the magnitude of the slaughters and why they held the lines as long as they could. You feel the shame of running and the fatalism of proving yourself to erase the shame. I acquired an understanding and, hence, an interest in learning more about this internal revolution. The reason for a 4, not a 5 star, rating is due to what I perceive is a Catch 22 in technique. (Also, no way to just make it 4.5)North and South experiences prior to, during, and after each battle are alternated but not chapter by chapter. If there was a structural pattern, I didn't pick up on it.The perceptions and dialogue are what you would expect. The term "enemy" is relative to which side is doing the talking. The commonly known Generals, Colonels and Armies are referenced and, for the most part, the folks stay on their original sides and in their original uniforms. It's just seldom stated "Those Rebs" or "Those Abolitionists" so you must keep track of who is on what side if you want to understand the way the battles flowed.Should be simple, right? Well, there's a lot of stuff going on and there are some similarities between folks on each side. For instance, two ministers sons. One on each side. Because I am not a devotee of this war, I don't really know what General was on what side or who won what campaign, where, or why. Except, of course, Lee and Grant. Meantime, the level of detail in what these guys were experiencing was much more interesting than who won the battle, to me. So, I found myself consciously taking a few pages to confirm what side was on the page. Probably not such a bad thing but it slowed me down. However, the author also provided sufficient summary of past actions when bringing in soldiers back into the story line after they had not been in it for a while. This is a tricky thing in these kinds of novels - too much and it becomes boring and far too long. Too little and you have to read it like a textbook to remember what the heck was going on 100 pages before. Mr Bryant did a pretty good job with this.Overall, I don't know how many of these I could read - what men had to do to each other and the treatment of the wounded and dying is overwhelming. More so when you know we did it to each other and could do it again. But I am really glad I read this one because it made it much more real to me.

Well written, good character development, well crafted plot, believable, and will read the other books by this author. I am pretty fussy about what I read, so to give it 5 stars, means it is a great book...read it !!
