By Mercedes Keyes I had the privilege of creating the book cover for this wonderful fact-fiction work of literary art. As some may know, I am an author of historicals as well, primarily interracial. I love history - and historical novels written about past facts specially. Ryter Rong has a voice and a way of telling the story that puts you right with the characters. It was hard reading parts of this. No human being should have the type of history the Irish, Black, African, Indian or waaaay back to the days of the Israelites... slavery is horrible. Genocide has been done to so many nations. The ugliness of it was real and startling in this heart-stopping read. Not sure what it was about Naomie - but in a tragic way, I could relate to her, knew why she was the way that she was. Talisyn is a hopeful survivor doing what needed to be done. She listened to her mother Mary well taking her counsel to heart. Then there is Zxander and I smile because of his focus, loyalty and heroism. Most certainly you want to add this gem to your shelf of books to read - or load on your kindle or other device of need to real.

I enjoyed the historical perspective and each character’s mystical power. This is the emotional story of Talisyn. Where a young girl with powerful visions and the tenacity to forge through even the toughest of times. She somehow manages to find love, enduring friendship and will steal your heart along the way.

The author wove a story out of fact and fiction. Last time I really enjoyed a book like this was North/South by John Jakes. I do like history if told in story form.The story starts with 11 year old Talisyn O'Riley's journey from Ireland to Barbadoes to the America's. She has a gift that she can see into a person's future by touching their hand. She has a bit of gypsy blood in her and finds out about it right before her town in Ireland is invaded and she is captured with her family and sold into slavery. She is the chosen one to take the story back to tell her people in Ireland. Through it all she finds friendship and love. She sees the horrors that humans do to further their wealth. On the flip side she also see what humans do to survive.The book has characters that you fall in love with and you root for them; some that you completely hate and some that can go either way.

By Amazon Customer George has taken a factual base of history and developed a strong story line weaving the family into a troubled time with a strong writers voice. I recommend this book to Civil War enthusiasts like myself and to those who know little about the war but like a good read.

As an avid reader of books about the Civil War, I consider this novel a “must read”. It tracks well with what I know, and yet brought it home in a new and insightful way . It was a particularly sad war, and George Axiotis masterfully describes what it was like for the civilians caught for four long years in its grasp right here between the two capitals and the two armies. You’ve done great justice to those struggles! I highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in the Civil War.

London in the 1440’s during the reign of King Henry VI is an inauspicious time to have the ability to look into a bowl of water or a crystal ball and be able to see the future. Perhaps that’s why the main character in this historical novel by Kristin Gleason and Moonyeen Blakey is always so reluctant when he is asked to do so.Barnabas, a thirteen-year old boy, a foundling who has been discovered to have a gift for contacting spirits has come into the employ of Mistress Margery Jourdemayne, also known as ‘the witch of Eye’. Mistress Jourdemayne makes her living selling herbs, potions, and charms, and looking into her ‘showstone’ for wealthy clients. She is unable to actually see anything in the showstone, so she has Barnabas look for her and signal from where the customers cannot see what he has found out.There is a second main character in this story, one Eleanor Cobham, wife of Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester. Eleanor and Humphrey are sometimes depicted as mostly sinister people, especially during the time that coincides with this story. In The Imp of Eye, Eleanor is treated a little more kindly; her involvement with Mistress Jourdemayne and Thomas Southwell, Barnabas’ mentor, is portrayed in her own eyes as having been due only to a wish to have a legitimate child by her husband the duke. But it cannot be denied that she wants to secure the future for her own children, and that she wouldn’t mind seeing her husband, who was King Henry’s regent before he came of age and remains his heir as long as he has no children of his own, become king.As the story goes on, Eleanor gets in more and more trouble without at first realizing it, until at last she is brought before an ecclesiastical court on charges of sorcery, witchcraft, treason and the like. Mistress Jourdemayne, Thomas Southwell, and several others of their circle are also brought to trial.Meanwhile, Barnabas has been growing up. With his love of ships and strong desire to travel, he has been trying to distance himself from Mistress Jourdemayne and the others, with some success.One interesting feature of this story is the use of dialect in the narration. Barnabas tells his part of the story in the first person, and at the beginning he speaks with a very thick accent of some kind. Later on he comes under the protection of a Portuguese sea captain and a Moorish scholar who begin to train him in different languages and work on correcting his English so that he will not be so readily recognized by those who wish him harm, and his portion of the narrative reflects his improved speaking.All in all, this is a surprisingly good story. There is a lot of tension, especially near the end as you wonder if Barnabas, who seems to be basically a good lad despite being rather, well, impish, will become caught in the web that has ensnared the others.I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review.

A delight to read By Leanne Glover At the beginning of the book I found it difficult getting used to the main character's use of the vernacular but soon came to find it suited the book and the character and made him more believable as he led us through the back streets and alleyways of 15th century London. Barnabas was a seemingly innocent 13 year old foundling who got dragged into intrigue against his will but also proved wily and cunning as he plotted his way out of his circumstances. The other main character of the story was Eleanor Cobham, Duchess of Gloucester and we followed her real life fall from grace as she schemed to get her husband to the throne of England. The book was well researched in regards to Eleanor and although she ultimately paid the price for her scheming it was hard to be unsympathetic to her desperate desire for a child and the love of her husband. I love the way the book switched from Barnabas narrating in the first person to the story of Eleanor in the third person and how the fictional Barnabas's story was cleverly interwoven with the true story of Eleanor. I actually read the whole book in one sitting as it was such a delight to read.I recieved a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

By hojobj Set in the Renaissance period weaving a fictional character into real-life events, I found this story to be interesting, entertaining and I could not put it down. Barnabus is a character you can't help but like because you can see him running around the streets of London, hanging out in the tavern, riding in the boat with his friend Tom, and feel his discomfort scrying for his masters and mistress. Eleanor, whose story is told in her point of view in every other chapter, is desperate to have a legitimate child with her husband, Humphrey, who is the Uncle to King Henry IV. You can't help but feel sorry for Eleanor as her actions set her up in a devious plot for her husband to lose favor with the King. Full of page-turning suspense as you try to find out if Barnabus gets caught for his part in these events.I work two jobs and rarely read more than a chapter of a book a night because of sheer exhaustion. However, this book kept me up later than I should have because I needed to find out what happened. Excellent writing to make it worth being exhausted the next day.I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Outstanding baseball murder mystery By LSmith Rating:5 of 5 stars (outstanding)Review:Mickey Rawlings, the utility infielder who is as adept at solving a murder as he is at fielding a scorching line drive, is back in the seventh installment of the Mickey Rawlings Murder Series by Troy Soos. This time, Mickey is now a New York Yankee at the start of the 1923 season and while he and girlfriend Margie are settling in the Bronx, there is a gruesome discovery at the site of the brand new Yankee Stadium. The body of a bootlegger has been found under the site and the team owner wants Mickey to help solve the crime. There are a few reasons why: one is that the victim was a former teammate of Rawlings, the owner doesn’t want the bad publicity and since Rawlings’ roommate is Babe Ruth, it also becomes Mickey’s job to be sure the Babe doesn’t get implicated in this as well.If this sounds complicated, it really isn’t while reading the book. As with the other books in this series, Soos does a terrific job of weaving detailed and rich baseball scenes with the grittiness required when Rawlings needs to ask questions or might find himself needing to protect not only himself but Margie as well.It should be noted that this book can be read as a stand-alone as well as any of the others in the series. Soos does describe enough about the characters so those readers who did not read the earlier books won’t be missing key details, yet it doesn’t repeat so many items that those who have read all of them won’t be skipping over those parts. That is not easy to do when writing a series, but Soos does so masterfully.Not only is the baseball realistic, but so are the characters and sites that are set in the 1920’s. Prohibition was the big topic during the time frame of this novel and the reader feels like he or she is right there in the speak-easies with the characters. The descriptions of the scenes and the dialogue are realistic for the time frame and Soos’s writing shows that he is quite knowledgeable of that era as well.Any baseball fan or fan of murder mysteries will enjoy this outstanding tale that is equal parts baseball and mystery.I will to thank Mr. Soos for providing a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.Did I skim?NoWere the characters realistic?Yes. Soos’s main characters in each of these novels, Mickey and Margie, are portrayed in a manner that the reader will be able to connect with them. Soos’s baseball knowledge and research are very helpful in making Mickey’s character believable as a major league baseball player. The other characters are not portrayed in an over the top manner so they are realistic as well.Pace of the story:ExcellentDo I recommend?Yes. Baseball fans and murder mystery fans alike will enjoy the latest Mickey Rawlings saga.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. so happy that my favorite series is back after a long hiatus By lindapanzo After a 15-year absence, Troy Soos is finally back with a Mickey Rawlings baseball history mystery. In this installment, Rawlings, a journeyman infielder, is playing for the Yankees in 1923 but one of his main duties is trying to keep his roommate, Babe Ruth, on the straight and narrow.As has been the case in other books, Rawlings is asked to look into a crime, a dead body found in a concession stand wall at the brand new Yankee Stadium. During this Prohibition-era mystery, the mob is involved.As usual, there's plenty of local and historical color provided in this entertaining mystery. I'm pleased that Mickey Rawlings is back and hope that more books will be forthcoming on a regular basis.

My favorite aspect of Troy's books are his period touches, and 1923 New York is a great setting for this type of story. It's also hard to find a better supporting character than Babe Ruth, and Troy weaves him into the story with panache, bringing his large persona to life without resorting to caricature. (I think my favorite scene is an uncharacteristically quiet evening shared between Mickey and the Babe.) A feud between Yankee ownership and visits to Prohibition-era speakeasies are among the details that bring the story to life. Troy also throws in a short crossover with another series he wrote set in the same period which I'm thinking of looking into now. My only complaint is the book is a little short. Oh, and it's clear that Mickey is too far into the backside of his career to play for all 16 teams from the era at this point. :)

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A perfect history By Axel I read this book in Danish (Slagtebænk Dybbøl) and the second book (Dommedag Als). Both about the danish-Prussian war 1864, when Denmark lost its richest provinces to Prussia. For Danes, that war is still an open wound. The author has studied all kinds of remamains from the war, including letters from the soldiers on both sides.You can really feel the pain of the wounded soldier, their fright. The language is wonderful. I read the books as if they were good novels. They are probablöy the best books I ever read. :-)

This book is a must for the World War II collector By Amazon Customer I recommend "Third Reich Collectibles" because it is a well thought out guide for the advanced collector, someone who is brand new to the hobby, or even a person who simply has an interest in Germany during this fascinating time period . The book is loaded with high quality, detailed color photographs of both common and rare items that a collector may encounter, along with period photos of some of these items being used or worn. It also gives realistic value ranges to aid in the often tricky business of buying, selling and trading German militaria. I especially like the way the author organized the chapters by the various military or political organizations. For me, this puts the items into their proper context. This helps the collector appreciate them more than if they were simply a badge or a flag. The historical background of each chapter is interesting and useful, and the organizations of pre-war and wartime Germany are so varied and diverse that few collectors or students of WWII history would not learn something worthwhile from this book. I highly recommend this book and believe those who are interested in this topic with spend hours reading and looking at all the terrific photos. I know I did.

The new format of the pictured items following right after the history of the organizations is so handy. It just flows seamlessly. Short and excellent explanation of the history of each organization. By Jerry Dutscheck Chris William’s new book THIRD REICH COLLECTIBLES IDENTIFICATION & PRICE GUIDE provides the reader with not only a treasure trove of bright color artifact photos, but also an understandable explanation of the history of the NSDAP and its major organizations that existed during that dark period of history. Chris does an excellent job of breaking down the complex and often times overlapping organizations that existed during the Third Reich.The valuation ranges that Chris provided for these artifacts were accurate, covered a wide array of items, and were in an easy to understand format. He included the more commonly encountered items as well as those rarely seen outside of advanced collections and museums. This pricing information is a great asset to those not familiar with the current collectibles market valuations for these types of items.Another specific area, in which this book shines, is the inclusion of the memorabilia of many smaller Nazi groups and organizations, such as the Small Gardener Association, and the often misidentified Nazi Stenographers Guild. This information allows one to realize the level of pervasiveness of the Nazi regime into the everyday life of the German people and understand the power that their government held over its people.I feel this book offers much to not only the novice collector, who will indeed benefit greatly from its concentrated information, but also to the advanced collector and student of history, due to the well researched content. Being a collector for over 35 years, I was still able to learn quite a bit about some of the more obscure and elusive Nazi German organizations. I know that this book will drive up interest by collectors in these often overlooked (and still affordable) secondary organizations.My only criticism is I would have liked to see more of the period photographs captioned with what they represented.I am happy to add this book to my own library and will certainly recommend it as a “must have” to the collectors who frequent my Military Collectibles Shop. I know it will encourage and excite a new generation of collectors to seek out and study these pieces of history. Happy Collecting!

Diaz Dr. Jack Barnstone is an entertaining, unpretentious doctor working in San Francisco during the late 60s at the height of the Hippie era. The Lucifer Connection's main character Dr. Barnstone has the misfortune of treating an unknown patient with a seemingly unthreatening ailment, causing his life to become a dangerous, unpredictable rollercoaster ride into the dark side and/or underbelly of the City by the Bay.You will be introduced to his close friend, charming physician Raj, his superstitious New Orleans born Nurse Jackie and uninhibited love interest Ellie. The Lucifer Connection's main character Dr. Barnstone reminds you of author Lee Child's fictional character Jack Reacher, (former military investigator who takes odd jobs investigating risky, and dangerous situations), except instead of being ex-military, Dr. Barnstone is a motorcycle riding, experienced doctor with a keen taste for good rye bourbon and a refined palette for good food. This book will leave you wanting to visit San Francisco, eat good Chinese food and experience the further adventures of Dr. Barnstone and his peculiar friends and foes. Can't wait for the sequel!!!

Watts' brilliant writing draws you into an era, and puts you front and center in the life of the charming bohemian doctor, Jack Barnstone, as his medical practice becomes entwined with murder and he soon has to save more than his practice, and even more than his life. 19 of 21 people found the following review helpful. I'll try to be polite, but..... By Andre P. Marmen I'm getting very tired of reading Kindle books that haven't been proofread. The various spelling programs are NOT substitutes for a decent proofreader and/or editor. I saw - without looking for them - 22 instances in just the first 50% of the book in which the wrong word was used in a sentence, e.g. straight for strait, pale for pail, waste for waist, etc., etc. And a bullet is a piece of lead, not led. If the author doesn't have enough pride in his or her own work to proof their own product before it goes out for sale, then I'm simply not going to bother. Why should I be forced to decipher what an author "means," as opposed to what he or she actually wrote - and pay for that privilege.

An eighth grade English teacher would have had a stroke. "There" for "their" numerous times. But a well thought out plot with interesting historical twists.

By Michael Hitchens Bill Bennett has done a praiseworthy job on counter-factual or alternate history, from building the story's main characters to describing events, aka battles, locals, cities and landscapes, to principal characters to supporting cast. I equally appreciate his follow-through on this sequel to his previous works and hopefully his contemporaries, e.g. R.E. Thomas, Douglas Niles, William Stroock and Ryan Hillary will follow suit in sequels to their previous writings. I know writing, which I've done myself and still do, is not an easy task, especially when your conducting research on historical personalities, weapon systems and tactics, often both of which are historical and the authors wishes to build credibility and authenticity into their works. With Reaping The Whirlwind, Bennett has conducted in depth research on such subjects as San Juan, Puerto Rico as well as Cuba and what those places and peoples were like in the last days of Spanish Imperial rule. I certainly look forward to his following writings!

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. enduring love By A Customer This third book of the Tide trilogy does not disappoint, as Joanna Bennett faces life on the island without Nils, during WWII. The reader is drawn sympathetically into the loneliness as well as the island's daily dramas. Joanna is a complex character, learning new things about herself all the time, and the reader is never sure if she will maintain faithfulness to the wonderful but long-suffering Nils. A rather different view of the war than is usually given in novels,the island characters prove that no one is safe or immune from the horrors of war, and yet love for the simple island life is heightened because of it. A satisfying read.

It's okay, but not as good as other books by this Christian author By deborah I really like Isabella Alden's work, but this one is very "light" and I didn't enjoy it as much. Middle Aged Miss Stafford finds an un-posted postcard in a book and her maid accidentally mails it. This sets off a chain of events, the first is her decision to go and board with a family out of curiosity to see meet the young lady who wrote the postcard, and find out if the young man (a doctor just beginning his career) it was written to will appear.The story is cute and moves along at a fair clip. But it is not, like others of Isabella Alden's, a truly Christian story. There are a few mentions of God and the Bible that seem "stuck in" and could just as well be taken out again - God is in no way central to the characters or their lives. I even found myself disliking the family in the first few chapters because the daughters are so uncharitable and ungracious in their feelings towards both Miss Strafford and the young doctor, who are unexpectedly present on Christmas.Later, the book describes these same daughters as gracious and kind, but it rang kind of false. Anyway, it's a light read and fun for an evening if you're looking for that. But, if you're looking for a story about Christian people learning to live according to Christian principles and God's will, keep looking. This book is too light for that.

Set at the height of Nazi power, it tells the tale of a spy moving between Switzerland and Germany delivering and bringing back information. Well developed characters although you have to stay on your toes in the beginning. Give it a try.

Cannot say I ever read a better book, and that includes Daniel SIlva, Vince Flynn, David Baldacci, Wilbur Smith and James Michener. My only disappointment was to find out how few novels he has written. Traet yourself to a real spy thriller. I also recommend Alex'x other great novel, the Best of Our Spies.

McDonald This is a very unconventional spy novel, which is hard to describe without revealing important episodes in the story. In the afterward, the author describes the reality of this book although it is a work of fiction. The novel is written in a linear fashion and I was soon caught in the vortex of events. In some ways the good guy/bad guy element was blurred and it is this characteristic that makes for an engrossing read. For those who fear the complications of a Le Carre style spy novel, I assure you this is a straight-forward storyline with all the spying quite in the open. Buy this book and you will be very satisfied with the time spent!

After the death of his wife Sarah, Abraham Stoltzfus realizes his son Isaac needs a wife but the Amish community is so small and there are no suitable women available. Abe, sending his friend Mark to Lancaster, PA on a mission to locate a wife for Isaac, prays for God's will and guidance. The story is fascinating as it follows from the Biblical account of Isaac and Rebecca. Mark finds Rebekah Miller and God opens the door. With God, all things are possible and He can use His messengers. The faith of Rebekah that she believes God is leading her from Pennsylvania to Ontario, Canada.
