Escaping the wrath of General Sherman’s troops, Joe Edge and his family are forced to seek protection and livelihood in the wilderness of Florida. The Civil War is winding down when the Edges arrive in Sara Sota. Numerous dangerous creatures roam the swamps: panthers, alligators, rattlesnakes, wild boar hogs.
Men are the most wicked of all. Florida has become a haven for deserters from both the Union and the Confederate armies. The state is sparsely populated—lawmen few and far between. Murderers, thieves, child abusers, and other assorted human debris take refuge in the palmetto scrubs and pine forests. They are no match for Joe. This legendary novel documents his many courageous acts. He stalks a tiger that attacked his family. He saves the cattle herd of the area’s richest plantation owner. He takes revenge against the man who killed a loved one. To a cold-blooded murderer, he dispenses frontier justice. Love blooms for Joe. He must make a choice between faraway medical student, precocious and stubborn Sparky Topp; or the temptress schoolteacher, Grisette Able. In the most exciting action scene ever, Joe takes on a gang of evil outlaws—including the devil himself. At conclusion, the reader must decide who saves Anne Southern from being skinned alive: Joe Edge, Albert the alligator, or a tiny gold cross and a whispered two-word prayer. The Hodge’s preface for their second novel, The Legend of Joe Edge, was a revelation. I had no idea that Florida was so primitive and unsettled after the Civil War.The Legend of Joe Edge centers on the title character. Joe has all the qualities and performs the acts expected of a young hero. The novel is easy to read and impossible to put down. The story took me on a rollercoaster of emotions reaching breathtaking pinnacles and dropping to unbelievable lows.Joe is devoted to his family, in particular to his mother, and assumes the role of “head of the house” when a young sibling suffers a horrible death. He defeats a number of vicious wild animals and bloodthirsty outlaws—all killers, all brought to justice. Love, however, steals his heart. He’s confused as to which of two young ladies has captured it.There’s more going on in the epic novel than the adventures of Joe Edge. Other characters contribute to the story: In New Orleans, Lily LeBlanc (formally Anne Southern); in Washington D.C., Chicago, and New Orleans, former army major Ruse Blackburn; Allen Southern with his new wife, Rachel, and Pop (a devil of a man) in Newnansville, Florida.I won’t spoil the ending except to say that the last action scene has an amazing twist. The conclusion brought me to tears.I highly recommend The Legend of Joe Edge, not only for entertainment but also for its education about frontier Florida.

A great deal of the story takes place in New Orleans By Nostalgic Reader In packing for my Gulf Coast of Florida vacation, I tucked in this book as my “get away from it all” read. I always relish the beaches, the restaurants, and all the attractions, but this book sent me to an unfamiliar land—the Florida of the late 1800s, just after the Civil War. As I read of Joe and his family settling into their new home, I felt the rawness of the land and the hardship of their new life, the trials and tribulations. With a one-armed father, Joe took on the role of man of the house—provider and protector, never faltering, except in dealing with the two young ladies that pursued him.A great deal of the story takes place in New Orleans, following Anne Southern’s pursuit of a new life as Lily LeBlanc, depending, and counting, on the generosity of an old and dying friend. The new Lily is a shrewd businesswoman, rollicking along, experiencing success as owner of a whorehouse and enjoying her lover, Dirk. The good times don’t last long. Evil arrives—an adversary from the past. She flees the city, and amazingly ends up in Sara Sota, Florida, the home of the Edge family, Anne’s neighbors from Georgia, before the war.The writers have spun quite a tale with an array of memorable characters, featuring history, heroism, romance, adventure. I have failed to mention the character Pop, who brings in mysticism and the supernatural. The book is a page-turner—very entertaining.

The story presents the suffering and many horrors of life after the Civil War.The Edge family arrives to the unknown wilderness of Florida. Uncertainties abound for just the basics: food, shelter, and how to make a living.Anne Southern, now Lily LeBlanc, starts a new life in New Orleans, far different from the charmed life she was accustomed to as the wife of a wealthy plantation owner. She’s lost it all: husband, her two sons, her looks, her identity, and her morals. She escapes the sorrow of her losses by creating a new life.Ruse Blackburn is intriguing. Behind his appearance and his horrendous acts, I couldn’t help but see the man he could have been without the atrocities of war.The authors’ descriptions of place were vivid. I had no trouble settling into each setting and seeing it as it might have been. The best of the story is that it carried me back to my youth. I felt a sense of love for Joe Edge, handsome, honorable, and heroic, yet oh so vulnerable to the uncertainties of sexual desires and love.
