Her goal was to marry Amiable, by any means necessary it seemed, and she accomplished that goal with deception and lying by omission. I might have been able to forgive her if she'd come clean about everything before she married Amiable. But seeing as how one major truth didn't come out until after, it was hard for me to feel sorry for her. Now, her distress over her supposed marriage by proxy to St. Cyr was absolutely real. As was her recount of the night he attempted to rape her because "it was his right". I could see why those appealed to Amiable, or to any man with a soft heart and a conscience. Tears are one thing while coming to the rescue to a damsel in distress is another. Juliet was most certainly a damsel in distress in regards to St. Cyr and his claims. She wasn't one in regards to much else though. What threw me was how quickly Amiable and Juliet fell in love. I'm not saying it can't happen. Hell, if anyone who frequents this blog knew me they'd know I'm a firm believer in that phenomenon occurring in real life. But the beauty of that kind of feeling was lost because of Juliet and placed a huge seed of doubt in my mind as to the validity of their feelings for one another. Was it really love? Or was it puppy love (Juliet) and lust (Amiable)?Although Amiable played the part out of concern for Juliet, being her husband opened a can of worms he wasn't prepared to deal with. I mean, how often does anyone in real life or in fiction discover their now-wife might be married by proxy to one man and engaged to another while being married to him? Only Amiable it seems, lol. His reaction, understandable. Juliet's brother might've been furious that Amiable left but what'd he expect? What would he have done if he'd discovered the same about his wife? But you want to know something? For all her faults, Juliet was only human. What she wanted, she did whatever was necessary to obtain, even if it went against the very grain of society, even if it meant learning the hard way that trust is not as easily obtained as it is so easily abused.Amiable, on the other hand, was likeable. A bit naive, I think, in the ways a woman's mind works or could work but that didn't make him less approachable for me. He didn't have a vice--drinking, gambling, womanizing, smoking, etc.--that could be considered off putting or a reason why no sane woman would marry him. He was good looking, a former soldier, the son of a wealthy baron, a gentleman. He was everything Juliet could ever ask for, need or want in a husband, so it was hard for me to accept the sincerity of her apologies when all the truth was laid out between them. There is one part of this book, I think the end of Chapter 21, when Amiable reflects on all that has happened between him and Juliet since that fateful meeting. In less than a dozen paragraphs, he not only reconciles the fall out between them, reasons where the blame lies with what, but he also admits that he still loves her. If that isn't a testament to how strong unconditional love is, I don't know what is.This story may or may not take with some historical romance readers. Juliet will probably annoy you with her immaturity, deceit, and lies. Amiable might make you scratch your head as you wonder why he's still with her. But if you choose to take a chance on this, which I hope you do, I hope you see that this isn't about the lies that brought them together but about the love that keeps them together.(Received from NetGalley via Pump Up Your Book for an honest review)

By Amazon Customer (April Renn/AprilR ) ONLY MARRIAGE WILL DO by Jenna Jaxon is an interesting Georgian Historical Romance set in 1761 England. #1 in the "House of Pleasure" series, but can be read as a stand along. See, "Only Scandal Will Do". I would suggest Book 1 in this series first, however, it is not necessary to enjoy "Only Marriage Will Do".The House of Pleasure is a brothel house, which is featured in Book 1 and gives the reader insight into the scandalously meeting of Juliet's brother, Duncan and his wife, Katarina. The Ferrers has a scandalous past.Meet, Lady Juliet Ferrers and Captain Amiable Dawson. I had a hard time liking Juliet, she is conniving, whiny, and immature, at first, but she finds her own after a bit. Amiable, is constantly saving Juliet from one disaster to another. Then there is the question of rather, Juliet was married by proxy to a Frenchman, Phillipe St. Cyr.Can true love win out, or will the law of the land win out in the end? Can Amiable save Juliet or will he lose her forever?A good romance with a bit of suspense and lots of passion. A steady paced tale with a few twists and turns. You either love the characters or hate them entirely, there is no in between.I enjoyed this tale of love, passion, and romance. While, a bit predictable, it was enjoyable, the characters are complex, or rather the relationship between Amiable and Juliet is, there is a bit of intrigue and suspense. Overall, an enjoyable read!*Received for an honest review from the publisher and/or publicist***Cross-posted on My Book Addiction Reviews dot com**RATING: 4HEAT RATING: MildREVIEWED BY: AprilR, courtesy of My Book Addiction and More

But in this, the second book in her House of Pleasure series, I feel Lady Juliet Ferrers–similar to the Ferrars family name in Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility– is immature and conniving. But she is also an unmarried woman in Georgian England–1761–and is at risk for poverty and vulnerability so I can forgive her some of her machinations to seduce and ensnare the very kindhearted and honorable Captain Amiable Dawson. But she is trouble. The question of her marriage’s validity is the heart of the plot but she’s also betrothed to someone else!Captain Amiable Dawson is a dashing and likable gentleman. He starts out that way when he saves Juliet from a dangerous situation and remains so throughout the entire story. The son of a Quaker mother and a British baron, his title is now Lord Morley. He has spent considerable time in the colonies in the army so honor and protectiveness are second nature to him. He is back in England after receiving a letter from Juliet’s sister-in-law, Katarina. Amiable was once engaged to Katarina and is still her very good childhood friend and he wants to make sure she is alright. So when Juliet asks Amiable to escort her to one of her family’s estates–charmingly named Guinevere’s Keep–he is reluctant as he knows her reputation will suffer. But at the expense of her safety, he acquiesces to her request.“Nothing appealed to him more, however, than a woman in need of rescue.”But during their detailed and vivid weeklong journey, Juliet tempts him to no end and this part of their romance offers lots of humor.“In love with the idea of him being a ‘knight in shining armor,’ she did not see the very real danger he presented. Knights had needs as well.”Juliet’s family has seen scandal before, the most recent being her own brother Duncan’s marriage. Juliet schemes to make Amiable fall in love with her by trying to get him alone at every opportunity. She eventually succeeds but her lies catch up with her and Amiable must decide whether or not he wants to be with her. Of course, something happens which challenges his will (and honor) to do so.Jaxon’s research–especially into the historical laws of marriage–is impressive. The central question to the plot is whether or not Lady Juliet is married by proxy to a Frenchman, the outrageously fiendish–bordering on caricature at times–Phillipe St. Cyr. There is also mention of the White Hart Inn in St. Alban’s, a hotel still in existence and the pub, the Gentil Knyght in Penrith, as well as the rules of dueling in The Code Duello.Jaxon writes an engaging love story in a clear and fast-paced style but I just didn’t care much for the heroine; she does not deserve Amiable. The House of Pleasure is a brothel which features prominently in the first book in the series and has a minor role here.Duncan and Katarina–from Only Scandal Will Do–make a prominent appearance so I highly recommend reading their story first as they reveal the colorful story of their scandalous meeting here.
