The Saint of Santa Fe: In 1968, a young, recently ordained Colombian priest leaves behind everything to start a new parish in the jungles of Panama. Father Héctor Gallego soon discovers that his parishioners live as indentured servants. Inspired by liberation theology, he sets into motion a plan to liberate them. Father Gallegos is successful, but his work places him on a collision course with General Omar Torrijos, the nation's absolute ruler. On January 9, 1971, military operatives abduct the priest. He is never seen or heard from again, but he remains very much alive in the minds of Panamanians who, still today, clamor for his case to be brought to justice. Although The Saint of Santa Fe is a work of fiction, the novel is based on the real-life experiences of Héctor Gallego and the campesinos who worked alongside him to create a just society. This sweeping novel tells many stories, including that of Edilma, the priest's sister who since age eleven has been searching for the meaning of his death. The Saint of Santa Fe is a story of faith, heroism, and sacrifice that's reminiscent of Graham Greene's The Power and the Glory and Miguel de Unamuno's San Manuel Bueno, mártir.

We lived his story By Mary Ann Marko My husband and I spent three years (1965-1968) working in Veraguas Panama as Papal Volunteers for Latin America, a Catholic organization inspired by Pope John X!!! incorporating ideas from the just ending Vatican Council !! which launched many efforts to bring the Church into the modern world and closer to the people. Among other things, Latin Masses were replaced with local languages, justice for the poor was emphasized, and lay participation in the work of the church was encouraged. We came to Veraguas at the invitation of Bishop Marcos McGrath as part of his Plan for Veraguas, a newly formed diocese in the poorest part of Panama. Hector Gallego,a seminarian from Colombia, was part of our team which consisted of the Vicar, Father Vasques Pinto, several priests from the states, one from Spain, another from South America, a lay brother from Holland, sisters from both Panama and the states, and ourselves. We loved Hector for his enthusiasm, intelligence, simplicity and joy of life. Our term of service was up in 1968 so we left shortly after he was ordained and sent to Santa Fe to work with the compansinos. It was not long after we returned to the states that we were stunned by the news of his disappearance. We have just come home from a return visit to Panama, the first since our departure in 1968. It was a joyful time there and we were amazed by the changes that have taken place in 47 years. We met many people we knew from our time living in the little town of San Francisco as well as their children and now grandchildren. We returned to Santa Fe and were in awe of the progress. At the time we were there, the only road to Santa Fe from San Francisco was a dry river bed that my husband traveled with Father Vasques Pinto in a jeep - or sometimes they went in a small plane. I always worried about becoming a widow when he left in the plane. My husband was working with Father to try to figure out how to construct a church from what was left of an apparent previous attempt. It was a great joy to see the Coop started by Hector functioning so well. We brought back as much coffee from the processing plant as our baggage would hold and are enjoying every cup of it. We met, as a tour guide, one of Father's students who now works for the foundation .Father Hector is indeed revered as a Saint there, and it was so edifying to witness the fruits of his labor. Our second son was born in Panama and baptized in the historic San Francisco church (baptismal fountain dated 1727) by Father Vazquez Pinto along with seven other Campesino babies. We stopped at the retreat center at San Carlos and found the now Monseignor Vasquez Pinto, at the age of 87 still actively working. A long line of people were waiting for a personal spiritual counseling session. With his sisters help, we were able to break into the line for a short but memorable visit. He will continue working until called by the Lord to join his friend,Hector Gallego.Although the book is historical fiction, and we did not know everyone in the book, we were able to relive much of the time and history through it. Our memories deemed it quite accurate. We were glad to discover the book prior to leaving for Panama and refresh our memory of one of the greatest experiences of our life.

It is not about physical prowess but force of will that changes people's worlds. It is a story about human rights but on a very personal level. You get to see how quickly lives can change when people join together. All that being said, it is also a riveting story.

Masterfully written, the author weaves three stories in one. While the book is a work of fiction, Father Gallego is very real and his lifes work is an inspiration to us all. The book also serves as a tribute to all Catholic priests who lost their lives in the pursuit of building a more just and loving society. Looking forward to reading more books by Dr. Silvio Sirias. Bien Hecho Maestro!

Escaping the wrath of General Sherman’s troops, Joe Edge and his family are forced to seek protection and livelihood in the wilderness of Florida. The Civil War is winding down when the Edges arrive in Sara Sota. Numerous dangerous creatures roam the swamps: panthers, alligators, rattlesnakes, wild boar hogs.

Men are the most wicked of all. Florida has become a haven for deserters from both the Union and the Confederate armies. The state is sparsely populated—lawmen few and far between. Murderers, thieves, child abusers, and other assorted human debris take refuge in the palmetto scrubs and pine forests.

They are no match for Joe. This legendary novel documents his many courageous acts. He stalks a tiger that attacked his family. He saves the cattle herd of the area’s richest plantation owner. He takes revenge against the man who killed a loved one. To a cold-blooded murderer, he dispenses frontier justice.

Love blooms for Joe. He must make a choice between faraway medical student, precocious and stubborn Sparky Topp; or the temptress schoolteacher, Grisette Able.

In the most exciting action scene ever, Joe takes on a gang of evil outlaws—including the devil himself.

At conclusion, the reader must decide who saves Anne Southern from being skinned alive: Joe Edge, Albert the alligator, or a tiny gold cross and a whispered two-word prayer.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Best book I've read this year! By Mollie Martin Like the Edges, my ancestors moved from Georgia ahead of Sherman’s troops and settled in Florida. The Hodge’s preface for their second novel, The Legend of Joe Edge, was a revelation. I had no idea that Florida was so primitive and unsettled after the Civil War.The Legend of Joe Edge centers on the title character. Joe has all the qualities and performs the acts expected of a young hero. The novel is easy to read and impossible to put down. The story took me on a rollercoaster of emotions reaching breathtaking pinnacles and dropping to unbelievable lows.Joe is devoted to his family, in particular to his mother, and assumes the role of “head of the house” when a young sibling suffers a horrible death. He defeats a number of vicious wild animals and bloodthirsty outlaws—all killers, all brought to justice. Love, however, steals his heart. He’s confused as to which of two young ladies has captured it.There’s more going on in the epic novel than the adventures of Joe Edge. Other characters contribute to the story: In New Orleans, Lily LeBlanc (formally Anne Southern); in Washington D.C., Chicago, and New Orleans, former army major Ruse Blackburn; Allen Southern with his new wife, Rachel, and Pop (a devil of a man) in Newnansville, Florida.I won’t spoil the ending except to say that the last action scene has an amazing twist. The conclusion brought me to tears.I highly recommend The Legend of Joe Edge, not only for entertainment but also for its education about frontier Florida.

A great deal of the story takes place in New Orleans By Nostalgic Reader In packing for my Gulf Coast of Florida vacation, I tucked in this book as my “get away from it all” read. I always relish the beaches, the restaurants, and all the attractions, but this book sent me to an unfamiliar land—the Florida of the late 1800s, just after the Civil War. As I read of Joe and his family settling into their new home, I felt the rawness of the land and the hardship of their new life, the trials and tribulations. With a one-armed father, Joe took on the role of man of the house—provider and protector, never faltering, except in dealing with the two young ladies that pursued him.A great deal of the story takes place in New Orleans, following Anne Southern’s pursuit of a new life as Lily LeBlanc, depending, and counting, on the generosity of an old and dying friend. The new Lily is a shrewd businesswoman, rollicking along, experiencing success as owner of a whorehouse and enjoying her lover, Dirk. The good times don’t last long. Evil arrives—an adversary from the past. She flees the city, and amazingly ends up in Sara Sota, Florida, the home of the Edge family, Anne’s neighbors from Georgia, before the war.The writers have spun quite a tale with an array of memorable characters, featuring history, heroism, romance, adventure. I have failed to mention the character Pop, who brings in mysticism and the supernatural. The book is a page-turner—very entertaining.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Book! By Blue Raider The Legend of Joe Edge is a big book but it’s so engaging that it’s a fast read. The story presents the suffering and many horrors of life after the Civil War.The Edge family arrives to the unknown wilderness of Florida. Uncertainties abound for just the basics: food, shelter, and how to make a living.Anne Southern, now Lily LeBlanc, starts a new life in New Orleans, far different from the charmed life she was accustomed to as the wife of a wealthy plantation owner. She’s lost it all: husband, her two sons, her looks, her identity, and her morals. She escapes the sorrow of her losses by creating a new life.Ruse Blackburn is intriguing. Behind his appearance and his horrendous acts, I couldn’t help but see the man he could have been without the atrocities of war.The authors’ descriptions of place were vivid. I had no trouble settling into each setting and seeing it as it might have been. The best of the story is that it carried me back to my youth. I felt a sense of love for Joe Edge, handsome, honorable, and heroic, yet oh so vulnerable to the uncertainties of sexual desires and love.

She shoots at him , while her killer boyfriend is constantly getting away. The author had a 50 page novel and stretched it out in an attempt to make a story. Disappointing it was.

Legio XVII Series, Book 3 (historical fiction): Following Scipio’s victory at Ilipa, Spain in 206 BC, Mago Barca, Hannibal’s brother, sails with his army to the northern Italian port of Genoa in 205, to attempt to do what his brother Hasdrubal failed to do in 207: reinforce the embattled Hannibal. Mago recruits mercenaries from as far away as Illyria (modern Albania) and Posonium (modern Slovakia). Praetor Manius Tullus leads Legiones XVII and V Etrusci to Verona to prevent the mercenaries from joining Mago and fights them at the Battle of Lake Benacus. Scipio arrives in Africa in 204 BC and fights two decisive battles. Under intense pressure from Carthage, Mago engages the veteran Legionaries blocking his way south. Carthage recalls Hannibal from Italy and sets the stage for the Battle of Zama between the two greatest generals of the 2nd Punic War. A last minute appeal from Scipio draws Manius and his two Legions to Africa to block Numidian cavalry from joining Hannibal. The fictional exploits of Legio XVII are impacted by the Punic War and its military operations are conducted in support of the overall war effort, but do not intrude into or alter actual historical events. Together, the three books present a complete summary of that ancient War.

Levin It’s not that often when the very first paragraph you read in a book provokes a face-palm.“When Proconsul Manius Tullus returned to Rome from Regensberg, Germany with Legiones XVII and V Etrusci in September 206, he was anxiously looking forward to seeing his wife, Lucia, and his two children, Flavia and Titus.” If the book is about Zama, this is 206 BC and the Romans never engaged Germanic military forces until around the turn of the first century BC when Gaius Marius defeated the Cimbri and Tuetones who had invaded Cis-alpine Gaul. Much less did the Romans send legions to Germania at that period in their history. The author seems to have a strong military background but little understanding of actual conditions of life during the third century B.C. He has his hero employing military time to schedule meetings and events in an age where there were no clocks and the best timekeeping devices were the sundial and the clepsydra. His characters use precise dates at a time when the Romans used a lunar calendar which was never in sync with the actual seasons of the year. He tries to give U.S. currency equivalents to ancient monetary units, something that would seem impossible to do with any accuracy. He even uses the term “dollars” at times. A young man named Kai tells his superior officer “First, my father was killed in Augsberg by the Teutons in 209 BC when I was 14.” My Christian friends would probably be thrilled to know that a Swabian boy prophesied the birth of Christ more than two hundred years before the event!Rome at the time of the Punic wars controlled much of the Italian peninsula, including parts of Cis-alpine Gaul, perhaps parts of Trans-alpine Gaul, all of Spain after 209 BC, Sicily, Corsica and Sardinia, and had a military presence in Illyria. Aside from the civilizations of Greece, the Middle East, Egypt and Carthage, all other lands belonged to barbarians. Barbarians were just that-barbarians. They had no cities. There was no Innsbruck, no Salzburg, and no Munich, yet the author writes as though these cities existed at the time. The main part of the book deals with the efforts of the protagonist, Manius Tullus, to prevent the mercenaries hired by Hannibal’s brother Mago, some 50,000 of them, from joining forces with him. Mago invaded Italy at the port of Genoa in 205 BC with a force of 16,000, later joined by 6,000 reinforcements from Carthage. He certainly recruited a number of soldiers from Cis-alpine Gaul, as many of the tribes there were hostile to Rome. It is highly unlikely, however, that he even attempted to recruit barbarians from the Danube, or mercenaries from Illyria. The Boii, who occupied part of Cis-alpine Gaul and were hostile to the Romans did have relatives who lived along the Danube, but it is unlikely that the primitive social organization of the tribes at the time would have lent itself to raising a mercenary army. As for Illyria, the Romans occupied the region as they were engaged in a war with Phillip V of Macedon, and it is unlikely than any of the Illyrian leaders would have offended the Romans by sending troops to Mago. Basically the book is based on events that never happened. (There actually was a battle in recorded Roman history called the Battle of Lake Benacus, but it occurred in 268 AD and involved invading Suebi and Juthungi tribesmen.)The author fares better when he writes of actual events, such as the battle of Ilipa and the battle of Zama, but even here he hits some sour notes. In 202, just before the Battle of Zama, Scipio’s lieutenant Silenus goes to Quintus Fabius Maximus to get permission to recruit Manius Tullus for a blocking action in Africa. Fabius was dead by this time, and even if he had been alive, he was no friend of Scipio, and would have been the last person Silenus would have gone to for assistance in the matter. The Second Punic War was one of the most dramatic and fascinating events in history, and it seems to me that many a fine novel can be derived from these events without having to resort to fantasy.

Clearly the author is well versed in military planning which can get in the way of plot and character development.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I have enjoyed reading this authors books By chris mackey I have enjoyed reading this authors books. For the first time he has taken me on a journey of command. The planning and implementation of Roman battle plans is very interesting . Coordinating the efforts of several different legions and the logistics necessary to plan and execute a battle plan was and is fascinating to me. I got to see some of this kind of effort as a SP4 in the 67th Medical Group, Da Nang. We coordinated all the medical units in MRl and MRll. I served in the Aviation Section, "DUST OFF" and the logistics for the units was a great effort by everyone involved. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

The year is 68 A.D., and the vast Roman Empire is in chaos. Provinces are in rebellion, while Emperor Nero struggles to maintain the remnants of his political power, as well as his last shreds of sanity. In the province of Hispania, the governor, Servius Sulpicius Galba, marches on Rome. In his despair, Nero commits suicide. Galba, the first Emperor of Rome from outside the Julio-Claudian Dynasty, is at first viewed as a liberator, yet he soon proves to be a merciless despot, alienating even those closest to him. A member of the imperial court, and former favorite of Nero, Marcus Salvius Otho seeks to become the childless Galba’s successor. When he is snubbed for another of the new emperor’s favorites, Otho decides to take the mantle of Caesar by force. At the same time, the governor of Germania, Aulus Vitellius, is proclaimed emperor by his legions, leading Rome into civil war. In the east, the empire’s fiercest general, Flavius Vespasian, has been embroiled in suppressing the rebellion in Judea over the last two years. With nearly one third of the entire Roman Army under his command, he wields formidable power. At first attempting to stay above the fray, and with the empire fracturing into various alliances, Rome’s most loyal soldier may soon be compelled to put an end to the Reign of the Tyrants.

About the Author Multi-time Ancient History best-seller James Mace developed hispassion for history at a young age, and has made Ancient Rome a life'sstudy. He penned the initial draft of his first novel, "Soldier of Rome: The Legionary", as a cathartic means of escapism while serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq from 2004 to 2005. His well received series,"Soldier of Rome - The Artorian Chronicles", is a perennial ancienthistory best-seller, as is his series about The Great Jewish Revolt andthe Year of the Four Emperors. In recent years, he has branched out into other historical eras, having written three books set in the Napoleonic Era, with a series about the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 planned for 2016.He can be reached via his website: legionarybooks.netOfficial Facebook page: facebook.com/legionarybooksTwitter: @LegionaryBooksBlog: legionarybooks.blogspot.com/

I decided to stick with it and it got more exciting and the story line more interesting near the end. I did feel that a couple of the characters left the reader hanging as to what happened to them. If you are going to introduce a character they should either be developed or not created.

He does a magnificent job of getting into the mindsets of the leaders and the legions.... as he usually does.

In 1863, at the height of the American Civil War, Howell A. "Doc" Rayburn, a young teenage soldier in Company C of the Twelfth Texas Cavalry fell ill just outside of Brownsville, AR, which was then the county seat of Prairie County, and a prominent growing town located near present day Lonoke County and Prairie County, AR. Rayburn was not the typical Confederate soldier of mythic proportions; he was something different. Rayburn was only five feet tall, scrawny, 100 pounds dripping wet, and rumored to be fond of wearing women's dresses. The Twelfth Texas Cavalry advanced into Mississippi and left Howell behind in the care of the Mosbys, a local family from nearby Des Arc, AR, Howell recovered from his illness, but instead of joining the battles being fought in Mississippi, he decided to promote himself from private to captain. As Captain Rayburn, he convinced a group of local teenage boys to join him in harassing the Union troops stationed near DeValls Bluff, in the Arkansas Delta, for the remainder of the War Between the States. Howell, an unusually ornery and feisty young man considering his size and stature, sets his band of young guerrillas on the Yankee troops patrolling the Arkansas Delta, committing every offense from dueling to stealing horses, to stealing the uniforms of Union troops and leaving them stranded naked outside of the Hazen Plantation (present day Hazen, AR). Things start to get confusing when Henri d'Argent, a local man living in DeValls Bluff, enlists his ward, Jesse Hamman, to join Rayburn's "Phantom Unit" in an effort to assist Howell in stealing an artifact being held by Union forces near West Point, AR. It becomes evident that very few of the people involved with Rayburn's "Phantom Unit" are exactly what they seem. Henri d'Argent has ulterior motives, Jesse Hamman isn't exactly who he appears to be, and a group called "The Council" appear to be pulling strings to keep secrets from local people in the area. And, there are a lot of sec

When Charles Darwin writes the wrong book and reverses the progress of science, Unseen University’s wizards must once again save Roundworld (Earth, that is) from an apocalyptic end.   Ever since a wizardly experiment inadvertently brought about the creation of Roundworld, the wizard scholars of Unseen University have done their best to put things on the right course. In Darwin's Watch they may face their greatest challenge yet: A man called Darwin has written a bestselling book called The Theology of the Species, and his theory of scientific design has been witlessly embraced by Victorian society. As a result, scientific progress has slowed to a crawl, and the wizards must find a way to change history back to the way it should have been.   DARWIN'S WATCH EXPLORES THE REVERBERATIONS of major scientific advances on our planet and our culture, the dangers of obscurantism, and the theory of evolution as you have never seen it before. This brilliant addition to Pratchett's beloved Discworld series illustrates with great wit and wisdom how the laws of our universe truly are stranger than fiction.

Darwin's Watch: The Science of Discworld III, by Terry Pratchett, Ian Stewart, Jack Cohen

Review “An irreverent but genuinely profound romp through the history and philosophy of science, cunningly disguised as a collection of funny stories about wizards and mobile luggage.” —Frontiers   “[Pratchett alters] history with such brilliant effortlessness . . . it all gels into a cohesive and exciting whole — which demands to be both read and enjoyed. For anyone looking for something fresh or even more off the beaten path than Pratchett’s own ‘Discworld’ universe, one would be hard pressed to find a better pick than this.” —ScienceFiction.com

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Ponderous But Thoughtful Approach To Roundworld "Science" By Joshua Villines It's astonishing the silly things some people will believe. For instance, some people deny the existence of the Great World Turtle A'tuin, instead arguing for something called "gravity" (a theoretical force which they readily admit they do not understand) as being the force that holds our world together. These same people would likely be dismissive of the real sciences, as studied at the Disc-famous Unseen University, instead preferring the "hard" sciences, which are presumably so-called because they only appeal to the hard-headed.Nevertheless, there are those times when it pays to be conversant with the superstitions of the less-educated. For those times, Darwin's Watch - and the other three volumes in the "Science of Discworld" series are useful, if not necessarily light, reading. Those accustomed to the whimsical style of the late historian Sir Terry Pratchett may be disappointed to find that this weighty tome does not represent Sir Terry's style or ease of reading. Darwin's Watch does not deal with serious topics like Sir Terry's witches, tourists, and felines. Instead, it deals with frivolous ones like evolutionary theory and quantum mechanics. If the reader goes into the book knowing that they will encounter these topics, and that their presentation encumbered sometimes with complex and even strained prose, then they are unlikely to be disappointed. The book uses its (thin) narrative device to help unpack the scientific significance of evolutionary theory in a way that an attentive reader is likely to find helpful, if not necessarily overtly funny or light-hearted. As such, it stands as an interesting addition to any library on roundworld "science," even if it does not contribute significantly to the history and character of the Discworld.

True, some is better than others, but it's all good. I am pretty sure I have read everything he wrote or co-wrote. But the Discworld tie-ins, written by others, have generally been a miss in my view. I had not read any of the earlier "Science of Discworld" books, so this was my first. And probably my last.I'm fairly certain that Sir Terry didn't write a word of "Darwin's Watch" other than the excerpts from Discworld books sprinkled throughout. It isn't a real story - it uses characters and situations from the Discworld books as a "framing story" for what I find to be a rather dry treatise on evolution. If you have seen TV "clip shows", that's what it feels like. The story part attempts to mimic Pratchett's style but, in my opinion, fails badly. The science part, taking a position I wholly agree with, spends too much time name-calling which I found distracting. That said, I did learn some details about Charles Darwin, and the claims of anti-evolutionists, that I was unaware of.If you're a Pratchett fan who wants anything and everything connected with your favorite author, then you'll probably like "Darwin's Watch". If you like Pratchett's writing style, or want to be introduced to Pratchett, this isn't for you. Newcomers to Pratchett are better served by starting with one of the earlier (but not earliest) Discworld novels, such as Mort.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Painless Way to Understand Evolution By Rebecca Haden Half of this book is a new Discworld story involving Rincewnd and the characters of the Unseen University, including Hex, a computer involving insects ("anthill inside"). They're working to save Roundworld, which is our own earth. The problem is that Darwin has written a book called "The Theology of Species" rather than "The Origin of Species," thus erasing the remarkable advancements of the Victorian Era, which simply didn't happen when Roundworld went down the wrong leg of the Trousers of Time.If you don't know Discworld at all and found that explanation completely mystifying, you might want to begin with one or more of the Discworld novels. The other half of the book is a clear and sensible discussion of evolution and intelligent design. The two parts alternate, so that you get a dose of Discworld along with each dose of science. The whole book is beautifully written, thought-provoking, and informative. It's a pleasure to read, no matter how much you currently know about evolution, because it includes fascinating historical information that you may not have heard before, even it you're completely up on the science. If you're super well-informed about the history and philosophy of the science of evolution, you'll still enjoy it because of the Discworld story and the wit and insight with which the scientific sections have been written. The book is not kind to intelligent design theorists, but it is thorough in its discussion, and should be enjoyable even for those who become uncomfortable as they read it. Terry Pratchett fans should not miss this book even if they don't want to read the scientific bits -- you can easily skip them and just read the story. You could of course also skip the story by reading alternate chapters but just the science. This would be an error, though. You want to know what happens to Roundworld, don't you?

I am a big fan of the Ring of Fire series and have read all the apx. 20 novels, and the 59 Grantville Gazette books to date, numerous times. The plot ran very slow and was tedious at times. The ending was surprising in that the book ends at what I would consider the first third, and with no conclusion. Just as the plot has been developed, the book ends. Leaving us waiting a year or more for the story to hopefully pick up. I wonder how much of the actual writing was Eric Flint's, and how much the other author? All in all, I was bored reading this. yawn...

By Amazon Customer The writing in this book is very readable and clear. That's about the best thing that can be said about the book. In most stories, you have a build up of tension as conflict develops, that is then released by a climax, and loose ends are tied up in the resolution. No need to worry about that last part here. If there's no climax, then there's nothing to tidy up afterwards. This book literally has no climax. It's just tension-building. Pieces are moved around the board and nothing is resolved. There is no clash of the major characters. In fact, all of the major characters stay in their respective corners of France and never come close to each other. There's always another book in the Ring of Fire and there are always items left unresolved, but you generally get resolution to the specific plot in the book. Not in Cardinal Virtues. It's really just a prologue written over several hundred pages. The annoying thing is that there's a really interesting story that could be had if ANY character in the book would choose to act in some way. Every major character makes a deliberate choice to wait and see. I guess they were all waiting to see what the sales from this book were before they decided to act!I can't recommend reading this unless you are a Ring of Fire completist. I'm sure the inevitable sequel will have to make some effort in summing up what has come before and, hopefully, it will then actually attempt to have action and climax and resolution. Go read that book when it comes out. You can safely ignore this book just like you don't need to go watch the crew set up the stage at a theater. Watch the performance instead.

By Amazon Customer Good plot (though it needs the sequel), terrible characters, and subpar attention to historical setting. Overall, a huge disappointment. The plot was interesting and pretty well paced. Some plot points were ludicrous (see minor spoiler below). This book is apparently the start of a new plot thread in France, so it resolves very little of the plot elements it introduces. The ending is in no way a denouement, and I would recommend waiting until the sequel is out or on the horizon until reading this book, if you read it at all. However, the characters were flat and uninteresting compared to earlier books. This was especially noticeable for characters with a lot of development in earlier novels -- Cardinal Richelieu, Isabella, Don Fernando were the most upsetting. Characters who should have known better did stupid things or appeared to be unaware of the politics that they had supposedly been involved in for the last four years or so. Some of the new characters were better, and I liked the more detailed development of Gaston, but seeing familiar characters portrayed so poorly really grated.MINOR SPOILER: The most infuriating character/plot point:Most of the plot happens because apparently Cardinal Richelieu, who's supposed to be the canniest person in Europe, isn't clever enough to ENCODE HIS TOP SECRET RADIO MESSAGES. How is that at all plausible?!What I found most annoying though was lack of attention to the historic setting. I'm no expert in 17th century European culture, but the 1632-verse in general does a thorough, interesting, and (as far as I can tell) accurate job exploring the historical and culture details of the setting. In this book, however, it seemed much less care was given for this sort of detail. For example, characters (who are French, have lived most of their lives in France, and have had little cultural contact with the uptimers) routinely quote Shakespeare. This seem highly anachronistic, and yet is never explained or noted as unusual. Aside from a bit of history and geography, I did not learn anything about early modern France in this book, in the way I've learned so much about early modern Germany, Poland, Italy and many other places in previous novels. I know didacticism is not the main point of these books, but the opportunity about this place and time was one of my favorite parts of this series, and it seemed to be completely absent from The Cardinal Virtues. Two stars because it was still a fun read, if you ignore all of the character stupidities. But the characters (and plaintext) ruined the experience for me, and again, I would wait for the sequel to be out before starting on this one.

It is 1947, and Beit Daras, a quiet village in Palestine surrounded by olive groves, is home to the Baraka family. Eldest daughter Nazmiyeh looks after her widowed mother, prone to wandering and strange outbursts, while her brother, Mamdouh, tends to the village bees. Their younger sister, Mariam, with her striking mismatched eyes, spends her days talking to imaginary friends and writing.

When Israeli forces gather outside the town's borders, nobody suspects the terror that is about to descend. Soon the village is burning, and, amid smoke and ash, the family must take the long road to Gaza, in a walk that will test them to their limits.

Sixty years later Mamdouh's granddaughter, Nur, is living in America. She falls in love with a married man, a doctor who works in Palestine, and follows him to Gaza. There she meets Alwan, the mother of Khaled - a boy trapped in his own body, unable to wake up from a deep blue dream. It is through her that Nur will at last discover the ties of kinship that transcend distance - and even death.

The Blue Between Sky and Water is a story of powerful, flawed women; of relocation, separation, and heartache; of renewal, family, endurance, and love. Susan Abulhawa brings a raw humanity and delicate authority to the story of Palestine in this devastatingly beautiful tale.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Spellbinding By Jabrole Once again, Susan Abulhawa has demonstrated her mastery of historic fiction as a literary art form. She consistently provides her characters with so much substance they become animated with lives of their own. Between Nazmiyeh and the Beekeeper lies a society and country that will grab your heart and soul. I found it impossible to put down as I began to visualize the story unfolding before me as though watching a film. In "The Blue Between Sky and Water", Abulhawa blurs the line between history and allegory (with a dose of the ethereal and supernatural). A must read for anyone who appreciates (or wants to know) the beauty and culture of all that was and is Palestine, or; for those who are merely seeking to be entertained. Either way, you will not be disappointed.

By Amazon Customer A powerful beautifully written novel about a Palestinian family expelled from their ancestral village of Beit Daras. They become refugees living in Gaza. One of the reasons that makes this novel so special for me is the fact that it is told by a gifted, intelligent, brave, and talented Palestinian author/ writer. For me, it is extremely important that our narratives be told by us Palestinians and Susan continues to do so in an amazing truthful way. Her first OUTSTANDING novel, "Mornings in Jenin" will always have a special place in my heart! The "Blue Between Sky and Water" is also an extraordinary piece of work and I will be looking forward for her next novel. Susan Abulhawa is simply what I like to call a "PALESTINIAN FREEDOM WRITER." ~ Tanya

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. One of my Top Books of 2015 By Megkat116 I cannot say enough about this book. It sucked me in and wouldn’t let me free until I had read every page. This story of a family in Palestine, over the course of several generations, during the hostile takeover of Gaza by Israel, provided a very intimate look at what it was & still is like for the Palestinians in that part of the world. To be almost a prisoner in your own country and to suffer through some of the humility (being strip searched before visiting an imprisoned family member) or lack of proper amenities that each and every human being should have access to.There were times that I laughed and cried for this family that spanned four generations and, at times, different parts of the world.I am disappointed to learn of some of the terrible things that the refugee’s suffered through at the hands of the Jews. There was rape, physical harm, murder, and imprisonment. All experienced by this one family. I admired the women for their strength and enjoyed some of the supernatural additions to this book. The characters, particularly Nazmiyeh, the matriarch of the family, were entertaining and thought provoking. There was Nur, who was separated from her family, and Khaled, who put together the missing pieces of their family puzzle, the beekeeper’s wife who also played a matriarch role without having any biological children of her own, and so many more characters you will get to know and love throughout this story. The family unity and strong love help them survive the toughest of times. I highly recommend this book and will be passing along my copy for others to enjoy.

Sacred Bones is based on the true story of Deusdona (“God’s gift”), a ninth-century Roman deacon who worked in the catacombs, digging up worthless bones and selling them off as the holy remains of saints and martyrs. Deusdona thanked God for his worldly success, but he was also a clever businessman who knew how to strike deals with abbots and kings. It didn’t hurt that no church could be sanctified without a relic in residence, and that the more relics a church displayed, the more pilgrims came to visit with their coins and their prayers.Deusdona was a Willy Loman of the Dark Ages, trafficking in bones. Every spring, when the snows melted from the Alpine passes, he traveled north with his “samples” – arms, cheek bones, toes – filling orders from the previous summer and drumming up business for the year to come.Whether he is floating in the buff in Charlemagne’s baths or gathering body parts in Rome’s underground City of the Dead, Deusdona offers us a vivid portrait of daily life in the early Middle Ages at an early stage in the transformation of ancient Rome into the City of God.Sacred Bones is both a medieval whodunit and a wry portrait of an age that has seldom been brought to life in such detail. Readers will relish the chance to immerse themselves in this oddly contemporary world.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Good Grave Robber... By eCid Sacred Bones is one of the very few first-person narratives of which I‘m aware that totally convinces you as the reader that you are personally experiencing the world of the narrator—and what an experience that is: Deusdona is an endearing and captivatingly sincere rascal who trades in bones he dredges up in the ancient catacombs of Rome. The place is the recently Christianized Europe of the 9th century whose ingenuous former pagans are eager for a guarantee to salvation under the newest religion through ownership of the remains of saints, martyrs and other holies. If the bones Deusdona passes off to a church prelate as the brittle finger of holy Saint Ursula is actually the tail joint of a catacomb rodent, what really matters is the buyer’s faith that the holy remains will provide a necessary relic to sanctify his church. No matter that there may be dozens of churches in the region containing Saint Ursula’s "true" finger. But Deusdona is a conman with a conscience. He has a very personal relationship with the bones he knows to be authentic of Peter the exorcist and Marcellinus the priest, two martyrs who died under Emperor Diocletian. He is particularly close to Peter’s bones and asks his bodyless friend to intercede with God and explain to the deity that Deusdona’s good outweighed the evil and his days were spent in His service, bringing faith to a fallen world. This is a wonderfully written little gem of a book and a real original that, apparently has not received the notice it richly deserves. In the process of giving the reader an eye-opening view of Rome just after the Caesars, it provides many LOL moments as this rascally super salesman works his way across a barely civilized Europe.Highly recommended. Also recommending Sacred Bones is Patrick Geary, professor of Western Medieval History at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton, former president of the Medieval Academy of America, and Distinguished Professor of Medieval History Emeritus at the University of California. He says of the book:“A very warm, lively historical novel—the best ever written on the subject of relic thieves—I look forward to recommending it to all my colleagues and friends.”

SPRING AWAKENING By John Lahr Springs passion for his story and his unreliable and delightfully venal narrator propelled me past any cavils; I was completely> caught up in the play of erudition and affection he has for for the> character. And when I hit a line about> Dionysus--"In Rome, I couldn't give Dionysius away", I laughed out loud. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Delightful Historical Novel By Otten Spring has chosen an unusual perspective to view the times of Charlemagne and a fast growing Church. He picks a salesman of relics to portray a tradesman view of medieval life. His style is engaging and filled with serious humor. "Abbots and emperors, with their insatiable lust for relics and their blind, superstitious faith in bones and sacred dust, bought virtually everything I offered them: Matthew’s earlobe, John’s kneecap, Mary’s nose.... It didn’t hurt that I was a Roman citizen in the employ of the Church. It gave me a competitive edge." While just a bit cynical, our hero rationalizes his deceptions as honest in that they encouraged real faith and inspired a fair share of genuine 'miracles.'
