Cowardly Witness (Pemberley) (Volume 1), by Ayr Bray

Review "Author Ayr Bray has written a humorous and entertaining novel in her novel Pemberley: Cowardly Witness. Filled with charming characters from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, this story continues the tale of Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy, as well as fun and new characters as well. Full of adventure and romance, this story will keep readers wondering who can be trusted and what will happen next. I would recommend this novel to lovers of Jane Austen's literature, as well as regency novels." - Singing Librarian Books

From the Author Excerpt from Chapter 3: ...When Darcy entered Elizabeth's chambers that night he found her sitting by the window in the near-dark. Any master could have painted her thus, sitting half in shadow looking out at the darkness beyond her window. The only light in the room was the fire in the grate, which illuminated the folds of her dressing robe. Her head was bowed, her forehead pressed against the window frame, and her hands folded in her lap. Her expression, tight-lipped and sad, tugged at his heart. It pained him to see Elizabeth looking so disconsolate. Her carefree nature and zest for life were contagious, and there were few times when Darcy had seen her without a smile. Now, however, her smile was gone. The red tip of her nose and the puffiness under her eyes revealed her failed attempt to stem another tide of tears. Darcy noticed the vase full of tulips Elizabeth had picked that morning sitting in the centre of the little table by the window. It seemed like an eternity ago when he had stood and admired her as she gathered the fragrant flowers. The day that had begun so promisingly had rapidly deteriorated after breakfast. "Let me help you to bed," Darcy said, laying a comforting hand on her shoulder. She turned her head away from the window and kissed the back of his hand. "I cannot sleep. My mind is in far too much turmoil." Darcy hated to see Elizabeth in this restless state of anxiety, caught up in dwelling on events outside her control. She worried for nothing. "Come lie down. I will rub your back to help you relax." He coaxed her away from the window, helped her remove her dressing gown, and turned down the blankets so she could climb beneath their warm folds. Then he got in beside her and drew her close. Elizabeth nestled into the crook of his arm, half-draping herself over him, and gladly accepted his loving ministrations. His hands were warm against her chilled skin, and the sheer comfort of his physical presence soothed her troubled spirit. Even so, fully half an hour went by before her steady breathing indicated she was at last asleep. Darcy lay awake for some time after. He would never confess it to his wife, but the possible consequences of Mr. Poe's presence in the house weighed just as heavily on his mind as on hers. They knew so little of the man. Though he truly did not fear attack from the outside, the theft of the letter opener and Mr. Reynolds's suspicion had caused him no little concern. He was duty-bound to protect Mr. Poe from discovery; he only hoped it would not become necessary to protect his household from Mr. Poe. With this in mind, he resolved to learn more about him on the morrow. ...Buy now to continue reading.

I read Hunted, her contemporary romance, though that genre generally isn't my favorite. I liked it, but now that Ayr is applying her talent of writing suspense stories into historical fiction, I am overjoyed. The historical elements related to lead mine tariffs seemed so real I had to perform a Google search to see if it was true. It was, and Ayr's research was spot on. Any person who is a lover of history and a suspense junkie (like me) will be sure to love this story. I can't wait for the next one, I hope it comes out soon. For those of you familiar with Ayr's romance novels and are wondering, this is a clean read acceptable for readers of all ages.

Compelling Suspense Story By Jae Before I tell you why you should read this book let me just say that if you enjoy historical suspense stories of any era you'll want to read Cowardly Witness. it is well written, perfectly paced, and populated by interesting characters above and beyond the regular Pride and Prejudice characters we love.Ayr Bray set this book a few months after Elizabeth and Darcy marry. They are just settling into a rhythm at Pemberley when an inquisitor requests that they house the only witness in a case of murder and corruption. Attempts have been made on his life and he is greatly in need of protection. Mr. Darcy agrees to take him in, but Elizabeth has her reservations, which causes her quite a bit of stress. It sems all is well and everyone begins to relax when the presence of the whiteness is revealed and chaos ensues. Without giving away all the juicy details, there is a kidnapping, a shoot out, and a saber battle.I thought I loved Ayr Bray's romance novels, but they are nothing to the compelling suspense story told here.

A quick P&P mystery By Claudine A Pepe (Just Jane 1813) This was a quick read, which held my interest and included some nice connections to the Darcy heritage. The mystery was interesting and the scenes with the Darcys captured the essence of what we would imagine their relationship to be; two passionate people not afraid to "express opinions that are their own..."
