A young, untried Northern baron must somehow defend his vulnerable realm from an invading force strengthened by darkest magic in this magnificent fantasy adventure from a master world builder The second son of the Baron of Fox Keep, Gerin never wanted title or responsibility, but both were thrust on him when his father and brother were ambushed and slain by enemy Trokmê raiders. Leaving behind the urban bustle of Cassat and his studies in philosophy and magic, Gerin the Fox returned home to accept his place among the other barons of the Northern marches—a region secluded from the rest of the Empire of Elabon. But now word is spreading that the Trokmê are returning, led by a powerful new wizard whose magic makes them unstoppable. Keeping his lands and people safe may prove beyond the young lord’s capabilities. Only one choice remains for the Fox: He must set out into the wild and make his way back to the city—for only there can he hope to find a new form of sorcery with which to fight the coming of the Werenight, when men will become monsters.   Before Hugo Award winner Harry Turtledove became known far and wide as the king of alternate history, he introduced himself to the world with Werenight, carrying readers into a remarkable realm of war and magic. Filling his fantasy adventure with a colorful cast of unforgettable characters, Turtledove has created a fantastic reality as rich, involving, and imaginative as the histories he later so ingeniously altered.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The Barbarians Are Coming By Arthur W Jordin Werenight (1994) is the first Fantasy novel in the Gerin the Fox series. It was originally published in 1979 as two separate works -- Wereblood and Werenight -- under the pseudonym of Eric Iverson. It was republished -- with some syntactical changes -- in 1994 as a single novel. The Empire of Elabon has long abandoned the northern marches. Only one pass remains unblocked -- but well guarded -- to keep the Trokme out of the Empire. The Empire isn't even collecting taxes from the barons of the northern marches. In this novel, Gerin is the second son of the Baron of Fox Keep in the northern marches. He went to Cassat to become a scholar and a mage. He studied history and natural philosophy for two years and had begun the study of magic. Then his father and older brother were killed in an ambush by the Trokme and he had to return home as the baron.Van is a wanderer from Shanda. He is very large and swift. He has seen much and is proficient in several languages.Ricolf the Red is a baron south of Fox Keep. Gerin had spent some time with Ricolf on his way to Cassat.Elise is the daughter of Baron Ricolf. She definitely has a mind of her own.Wolfar of the Axe is a northern baron. He has more than a touch of wereblood. Gerin suspects him of wicked plans.Rihwin is a Cassat noble. He is visiting the keep of Ricolf. In this story, the Trokmoi have a new wizard with great powers. The wizard has caused a severe rainfall onto Gerin's land and then spanned the Niffet River with a magical, shining bridge. The Trokmoi steal his cattle, pigs, sheep, and serfs.Any villeins that try to stand up to the Trokmoi are slaughtered. Gerin defeats the Trokme Chieftain, but his chariot driver is the warlock and sets a demon on Gerin. After the demon is beat down into the mud, the wizard disappears.Gerin and Van head toward Cassat to hire a wizard. On the way, they warn the barons that the Trokmoi will be returning. When they reach the Bevon lands, they discover that civil war has erupted upon the death of the baron. They cautiously hasten through the barony.Ricolf is glad to see Gerin, but disturbed about the news. He is busy choosing a husband for Elise. Gerin had received at invitation, but had to decline because of illness.Elise has grown up since he last saw her. She is also surprising well read in the classics. She and Gerin have several pleasant talks about literature.Ricolf selects Wolfar to be Elise's husband. That night, Elise turns up at Gerin's door prepared to leave the barony. Gerin cannot convince her to stay, so he takes her to Cassat. She leaves a note for her father explaining her actions. They travel through the haunted night until far enough away from the keep. Elise elaborates on her plans to visit her mother's brother. Then Gerin and Van stand watches through the night. When Gerin reaches Cassat, they drop off Elise at her uncle's mansion and head for the Sorcerers' Collegium. After they reach the front of the line, Gerin explains his situation, but is told that no wizards are currently available. He refuses the idea of waiting several months and leaves the school.Gerin wants to get drunk, so he heads for the nearest bar. There he finds Rihwin, who had left Ricolf's lands shortly after the proposed bride fled the scene. Gerin discovers that Rihwin is a trained wizard who hadn't graduate as planned. This tale takes Gerin and his friends back to Fox Keep. On the way, they learn that the Trokme have invaded the north. Refugees crowd the highway.Strange things happened to Gerin. The next installment in this sequence is Prince of the North. These tales are also included in the omnibus Wisdom of the Fox.Highly recommended for Turtledove fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of armed combat, magecraft, and a bit of romance. Read and enjoy!-Arthur W. Jordin

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Sadly disappointing. By Judy P. I am a huge fan of reading what if stories about Elizabeth and Darcy. I had ordered this book thinking because it was in print I would find a well written edited book. Not so much... missing words from sentences - along with formatting. The description of the book had me intrigued so much so I decided to purchase this printed book. I am not a person who likes to have books around taking up space. I love my kindle just for the amount of space I save. The story begins with Mrs Bennet abusing Lizzy and her being sent away to her Godfather Lord Matlock. While it is upsetting to read about the abuse of Lizzy, her father's explanation was lacking. There was so much more that could have been written in the development of their family connections. One example is Elizabeth's resemblance to her godmother, I felt there could have been more including why Mrs. Bennet hated Lizzy instead of the lost family connection going back into their families tree. In this story Mr. Darcy still made his offhand remark about Lizzy, Mr Bennet did not confront Darcy even with his knowledge of the connections to his family. The other example is the explanation as to why Mrs. Bennett was abusing Lizzy, Oh the possibilities. The book tells more about shopping trips than building relationships. While I enjoy details about ladies fashions I would have preferred more about romance and development of friendships. There was a build up in the story about London learning of Lizzy's fortune that was never mentioned. It was mentioned so much so I would have thought something might have happened. Even Caroline's appearance was without complications. She seemed out of character for my tastes. There are times when I spend $5.00 or less on a story that does not hit its mark does not bother me, however spending $13.05 was a hard hit. There is to be a sequel however the subject is the daughter of the Matlock's, having said that, I will not be purchasing the sequel. Please remember this is only my opinion and opinions vary.

A lovely out of canon P&P By Erika L Hoemke Okay, to begin with this book is in print format, not sure if it will be on Kindle in the future.I loved this book, the description minimizes what actually happens (FYI I will not fully spoil any book in my reviews). The book starts after Elizabeth has refuses Mr Collins and Mrs Bennet is irate, though she is worse than in canon. Mrs Bennet it appears has had a history of emotionally, mentally and I believe occasionally physically abusive to Elizabeth, therefore Mr Bennet requested that her godfather invite Elizabeth to spend time with him. (Since its towards the beginning I will give you this info....) Lord Matlock is Elizabeth's godfather, his sister Elizabeth (twin to Lady Catherine de Bourgh) was Elizabeth (Bennet's) godmother. This book tells how Elizabeth was left an inheritance by her godmother and how she slowly finds her way in the world of the upper echelons of London society. Some of her prior interactions (canon from before the awful proposal by Mr Collins) are not exactly as we know it where Mr Darcy and Mr Wickham are concerned, and through all her closer interaction with Lord Matlock and his family she is able to form Mr Darcy's character better. There really is very low angst, so I was able to enjoy it better without my heart racing, must have some E&D stories that are lower angst rating from time to time. As other reviewers have mentioned, there are a bit of editing issues, though in my opinion not as many or as obstructive as other stories I have read.I really liked this version of Elizabeth because she was her strong self, at times sarcastic as normal, though she was not too proud to ask for help and hold grudges. She does not judge everyone at face value until she gets to know them more. I love Mary and Mr Bennet in this book, yes Jane is her normal supportive self though she is not a primary character like Mary and Mr Bennet are. Mary has also been 'abused' by Mrs Bennet by being the ignored child, though in this book she starts to emerge more and show her love for her family, especially Elizabeth because of having been 'abused' by their mother as a common ground of understanding, Mr Bennet is amazing in this book as well because he actually takes an interest in the wellbeing of his family, yes starting with his favorite but does show more of being a father than is canon. Mr Darcy is different in that he is not as fastidious and shows more of his heart than what is canon.I will recommend this story to all JAFFers, it is appropriate for all audiences.

Author's Note: The Aphrodite Academy series tells stories about women who need second chances. Some, even third chances. These women are not the privileged and pampered, but women to whom life has not been kind. The language is frank and saucy, but the stories are driven by character and plot, not sexual content. Although Juliana is a stand-alone novella, you will likely appreciate the story more if you read Belle, Cecilia, and Holly first. The story: Juliana, an innocent bride, marries a charming, insouciant gentleman who promptly sets about teaching her all aspects of love, not just those generally practiced in Regency bedchambers. At some she draws the line, but when her husband adds Darius Wolfe, his man of business, to the mix, she finally learns the meaning of love. Yet happiness remains elusive. When Juliana's husband is killed in a duel, instead of being freed, she is haunted by memories of her role in ménage à trois and is unable to move forward into a brighter world. She sets up a school to provide second chances for young women who have gone astray, yet six celibate years go by with her relationship to Darius Wolfe unresolved. Even after her friends band together to help her, the possibility of a happy ending remains doubtful.

In this classic work of alternate history, acclaimed Hugo Award–winning author Harry Turtledove explores a different America in which a primitive race of Neanderthals are enslaved by Homo sapiens from across the ocean What if mankind’s “missing link,” the apelike Homo erectus, had survived to dominate a North American continent where woolly mammoths and saber-toothed tigers still prowled, while the more advanced Homo sapiens built their civilizations elsewhere? Now imagine that the Europeans arriving in the New World had chanced on these primitive creatures and seized the opportunity to establish a hierarchy in which the sapiens were masters and the “sims” were their slaves.   This is the premise that drives the incomparable Harry Turtledove’s A Different Flesh. The acclaimed Hugo Award winner creates an alternate America that spans three hundred years of invented history. From the Jamestown colonists’ desperate hunt for a human infant kidnapped by a local sim tribe, to a late-eighteenth-century contest between a newfangled steam-engine train and the popular hairy-elephant-pulled model, to the sim-rights activists’ daring 1988 rescue of an unfortunate biped named Matt who’s being used for animal experimentation, Turtledove turns our world inside out in a remarkable science fiction masterwork that explores what it truly means to be human.

A Different Flesh, by Harry Turtledove

From Publishers Weekly Turtledove specializes in carefully researched alternate histories involving the Roman and Byzantine empires. This time, though, he applies that expertise to a more striking premise. What if homo erectus (called "sims" here) had lived on in America while homo sapiens elsewhere developed into the European civilization we know? The sims, a living missing link of limited intelligence and half-human, half-simian appearance, challenge traditional ideas of humanity's special, God-given place in the world. With an eye for historical turning points, Turtledove develops his thesis through vignettes from 1610 to 1988. The later, longer chapters become increasingly involving and intricate as the issues grow more complex, from slavery to (all but human) guinea pigs for scientific research. One of the best entries in the "Isaac Asimov Presents" series. Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal In seven stories the author of Agent of Byzantium explores a world in which homo erectus survives alongside humankind. Whether recounting the Jamestown colonists' first encounter with "sims," describing a race between a steam-powered locomotive and a mammoth-drawn wagon, or depicting the "simian" rights movement of the 1980s, Turtledove's gift for historical speculation is always provocative. Bresette Intrigued with the alternate history scene and learning that Harry Turtledove is the "grandmaster" of it, I read "A Different Flesh" with high hopes of inspiration & imagination. Boy, was I let down. The idea of the book is great. Instead of finding the Indians, the early explorers find "sims"...a shorter way of saying Neanderthal caveman. The book goes through several short stories with very likeable characters and intriguing plot lines. However, the plot goes from the 1600s to the 1800s at a good pace and then all of a sudden jumps to 1988 and then that's the end. I feel that Turtledove only had to write x amount of words for the publisher and that's exactly where he stopped. What about all the years between the 1800s and 1988?Why not explore future years past 1988? I realize that would have been predicting for the author, but that is the fun of science fiction. The ending of the book did not wrap anything up...the sims go to either medical research or reservations. And?!? Then what?!? Turtledove could have easily turned this into a 400-500 page epic novel and connected many loose ends while stabbing at greater philosophical, political, religious and social issues.Overall, a let down at the end after a promising start.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Great premise, no follow-up By Joel Bass I was intrigued with the premise of the book long before I located a copy. Reading it, I was disappointed to find that there wasn't much more to it than that. It's written as a series of vignettes, starting with early American colonists encountering the Sims, and continuing forward through time to the present day, with Sims being used as medical test-subjects. I liked that approach at first, but now I'm wondering if a novel would have worked better. None of the characters are very well fleshed out (excuse the pun), and the alternate-reality world of the sims seems disappointingly similar to our own. I'd love to see a different writer work from the same starting point - the results could be fascinating.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Far and away Turtledove's best By Jim Palmer Harry Turtledove is my guilty pleasure. His multivolume series ("Elabon/Gerin the Fox," "The Darkness," "Worldwar/Colonization," "Scepter of Mercy," "Videssos," etc., etc., etc.) are cheap, cheerful, and easy to consume by the pound. They're like Chicken McNuggets--churned out by the gazillion, kinda tasty, and they always leave you feeling slightly nauseated. Count on one one-dimensional character saying something dry to another one-dimensional character, and the other doing a double-take as he realizes he's being twitted, on damn near every page. It gets irritating. What makes it so irritating is that Turtledove is better than this, and "A Different Flesh" is proof. Set in a world where the forerunners of Native Americans never made it across the Bering Strait land-bridge, leaving North America populated by Homo Sapiens' close relations, Homo Erectus, and a host of other Pleistocene beasties, "A Different Flesh" traces the history of the relationship between H. Sapiens and H. Erectus over the course of seven stories covering four centuries, from the perspectives of colonial settlers, fur trappers, antebellum Southern lawyers and slaves, and, cleverly, student activists. The standout, "And Now To Bed,"is the account of Samuel Pepys (Turtledove does an uncannily good Pepys, by the way) grappling with the questions the existence of these creatures raises. Faced with the existence of creatures clearly related to us, but just as clearly not quite us, humanity is forced to confront the concept of evolution nearly two centuries before Darwin. As a result, the scientific revolution occurs a quite a bit earlier in this continuum. But H. Sapiens is no more pleasant a creature in the world of "A Different Flesh" than he is in ours, and the book makes for painful reading as the "sims," as H. Erectus is referred to throughout, are subjected to being hunted, servitude, distaste, disgust, and eventually medical testing."A Different Flesh" is thorough, challenging, thoughtful, and smartly-written, and ranks up there with "Agent of Byzantium" as one of Turtledove's best. It's not for nothing he's considered the master of alternate history. And I wish he'd do more in this vein, and leave the cutesy stuff to less talented hacks.

So many people have been, are being, and will be damaged by the politics and business side of the church. No church is perfect, and we know that. However, the way some churches treat those that have labored and helped bring the ministry to the place it is often at, but those same people, once cast aside, become the recipients of the coldest and harshest shunning ever. Thank God for Rhonda's transparency, and her healing, that will help others like me walk into our liberation.Avery Thompson

In the midst of the Great Depression in 1934, twenty-three-year-old John Laufketter is struggling to support his wife and infant son as a coal miner in the southern Illinois town of Beckemeyer, forty-five miles to the east of St. Louis. Once a promising baseball prospect destined for stardom, John's dream was thwarted by a series of personal setbacks after leaving high school – setbacks which now have relegated his life to what he sees as the limited opportunities his hometown has to offer. The only recreation John can afford is playing in the Clinton County Baseball League, where fierce battles take place for local pride among the ten towns which have teams. As a former standout player, it was always assumed by Beckemeyer residents that John would return to the town and play for them in the CCL – but only after an expected lengthy career in the major leagues. With the impact of the poor economy deepening, the availability of work in the coal mine has gradually dissipated, furthering the disappointment which John feels in himself – and which even some of the locals feel in him as well, as John was supposed to be the one to "get out" of the town and do great things. But due to an incredible implosion of faith, luck, and the valiant charge of his beloved St. Louis Cardinals toward the pennant, John is ultimately presented with a one-in-a-million opportunity to make a name for himself in baseball. It is his one final chance to get himself - and his family - out of the coal mine for good.

Mr. Feldmann dives into a genre that is not really expansive (fictional baseball) does a great job for baseball and history lovers. He masterfully weaves real0life history with the story he is telling, that of a fictional player who is weaved into the retelling of the 1934 baseball season. Very enjoyable read, and meticulously researched for historical accuracy as well (I found myself looking up box scores from the retelling of the season to see if they were for real).

By Crystal L Smith This is the first book I have read by K.J. Jackson. I was unsure at first about the plot of the book but I must say that I was very surprised! I was hooked after the first chapter of trying to figure out how this story was going to unfold and I was not let down! The author kept me interested throughout the entire book with the different events taking place. The chemistry between the Hero and Heroine is wonderfully developed and every conversation between the two leaves you wanting more. Great book by a new author to me. I look forward to reading her other novels!

By Akpride89 This was a great historical romance, I loved Wynne so much, she was just such a beautiful person inside and out and could really bring out the best in people who had led hard lives. It was a wonderfully written book, I never found myself questioning the situation or become confused with what was happening in the story (I hate plot holes in books!) I love how the characters in this book are unique from the other books. I don't feel like I am reading a story that is the same as her other books, so I don't find it predictable which is great! The characters, the villains and the paths they take, are all different from each other!!! I am excited to see what K.J. Jackson has in store for the next one in this new book series!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Another fine story from K.J. Jackson By Melissa I have just discovered K.J. Jackson and have downloading her books one after the other. Worth of a Duke is an interesting story with some unexpected happenings. Sometimes these flow well and other times they just seem too jarring. Still I enjoyed this novel.Rowen Lockton the Duke of Letson, finds Wynne in the woods by his estate. She is an oddity for sure, an American who still believes she is in the Appalachian Mountains and not in England. Rowen feels compassion for her and invites her to his ancestral seat. Wynne is suffering from amnesia and he is genuinely concerned for her safety.Rowen is rather new to the title and residing in his home is his Aunt, the Dower Duchess who despises him. She is embittered and the tension between Rowen and her is thick. Wynne enters this conflict and breathes fresh air into the castle. Wynne is an accomplished artist and she paints what she perceives, so her portrait of the Duchess is revealing. Wynne has the ability to reach unreachable people, to draw them out. She accepts people as they are and she loves people deeply.Rowen is quite taken with Wynne but he has his own personal demons. He cares for her and wants to solve the mystery of her past. How did she get to England and where is her family? Rowan has a connection to Wynne and it grows stronger daily even in the midst of uncertainty. This bond is one of the best parts of this story. There are some problems with the characters; they have a tendency to overreact or to react in a contrary manner than their basic personality. Wynne can be incredibly hurtful and Rowen distrusting. These traits were surprising and not in a good way, it did not reconcile with their previous actions. The mystery is on the backburner for many chapters then it becomes front and center, and this was not necessarily a bad thing. It allowed time for the couple to develop their relationship but it does take over too much of the last part of this novel. Overall though Ms. Jackson has written a romantic novel with complex and likable leads who fall madly in love.

Cowardly Witness (Pemberley) (Volume 1), by Ayr Bray

Review "Author Ayr Bray has written a humorous and entertaining novel in her novel Pemberley: Cowardly Witness. Filled with charming characters from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, this story continues the tale of Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy, as well as fun and new characters as well. Full of adventure and romance, this story will keep readers wondering who can be trusted and what will happen next. I would recommend this novel to lovers of Jane Austen's literature, as well as regency novels." - Singing Librarian Books

From the Author Excerpt from Chapter 3: ...When Darcy entered Elizabeth's chambers that night he found her sitting by the window in the near-dark. Any master could have painted her thus, sitting half in shadow looking out at the darkness beyond her window. The only light in the room was the fire in the grate, which illuminated the folds of her dressing robe. Her head was bowed, her forehead pressed against the window frame, and her hands folded in her lap. Her expression, tight-lipped and sad, tugged at his heart. It pained him to see Elizabeth looking so disconsolate. Her carefree nature and zest for life were contagious, and there were few times when Darcy had seen her without a smile. Now, however, her smile was gone. The red tip of her nose and the puffiness under her eyes revealed her failed attempt to stem another tide of tears. Darcy noticed the vase full of tulips Elizabeth had picked that morning sitting in the centre of the little table by the window. It seemed like an eternity ago when he had stood and admired her as she gathered the fragrant flowers. The day that had begun so promisingly had rapidly deteriorated after breakfast. "Let me help you to bed," Darcy said, laying a comforting hand on her shoulder. She turned her head away from the window and kissed the back of his hand. "I cannot sleep. My mind is in far too much turmoil." Darcy hated to see Elizabeth in this restless state of anxiety, caught up in dwelling on events outside her control. She worried for nothing. "Come lie down. I will rub your back to help you relax." He coaxed her away from the window, helped her remove her dressing gown, and turned down the blankets so she could climb beneath their warm folds. Then he got in beside her and drew her close. Elizabeth nestled into the crook of his arm, half-draping herself over him, and gladly accepted his loving ministrations. His hands were warm against her chilled skin, and the sheer comfort of his physical presence soothed her troubled spirit. Even so, fully half an hour went by before her steady breathing indicated she was at last asleep. Darcy lay awake for some time after. He would never confess it to his wife, but the possible consequences of Mr. Poe's presence in the house weighed just as heavily on his mind as on hers. They knew so little of the man. Though he truly did not fear attack from the outside, the theft of the letter opener and Mr. Reynolds's suspicion had caused him no little concern. He was duty-bound to protect Mr. Poe from discovery; he only hoped it would not become necessary to protect his household from Mr. Poe. With this in mind, he resolved to learn more about him on the morrow. ...Buy now to continue reading.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A very nice read! By Dena Billman Ayr Bray offers not just another good story here, but another step in the development of her craft. I read Hunted, her contemporary romance, though that genre generally isn't my favorite. I liked it, but now that Ayr is applying her talent of writing suspense stories into historical fiction, I am overjoyed. The historical elements related to lead mine tariffs seemed so real I had to perform a Google search to see if it was true. It was, and Ayr's research was spot on. Any person who is a lover of history and a suspense junkie (like me) will be sure to love this story. I can't wait for the next one, I hope it comes out soon. For those of you familiar with Ayr's romance novels and are wondering, this is a clean read acceptable for readers of all ages.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Compelling Suspense Story By Jae Before I tell you why you should read this book let me just say that if you enjoy historical suspense stories of any era you'll want to read Cowardly Witness. it is well written, perfectly paced, and populated by interesting characters above and beyond the regular Pride and Prejudice characters we love.Ayr Bray set this book a few months after Elizabeth and Darcy marry. They are just settling into a rhythm at Pemberley when an inquisitor requests that they house the only witness in a case of murder and corruption. Attempts have been made on his life and he is greatly in need of protection. Mr. Darcy agrees to take him in, but Elizabeth has her reservations, which causes her quite a bit of stress. It sems all is well and everyone begins to relax when the presence of the whiteness is revealed and chaos ensues. Without giving away all the juicy details, there is a kidnapping, a shoot out, and a saber battle.I thought I loved Ayr Bray's romance novels, but they are nothing to the compelling suspense story told here.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A quick P&P mystery By Claudine A Pepe (Just Jane 1813) This was a quick read, which held my interest and included some nice connections to the Darcy heritage. The mystery was interesting and the scenes with the Darcys captured the essence of what we would imagine their relationship to be; two passionate people not afraid to "express opinions that are their own..."

Adam Bede, the titular hero of George Eliot's first novel, is of a character so sterling that one little anecdote serves to define his whole life and work ethic: He's a carpenter, and he had done some work for a lady whose father, an old squire named Donnithorne, suggested that she pay him less than the fee he requested. Adam insisted that he would rather take no money for the job, for to accept a reduced amount would be like admitting he overcharges for shoddy work. By standing on his principles, he won his full fee in the end and cemented his reputation as a businessman of honor and acumen, proving his fairness to both his customers and himself. Thus he seems an unlikely match for Hetty Sorrel, the prettiest girl in the village of Hayslope. Vain, selfish, materialistic, hating her laborious farm chores, Hetty bears more than a passing resemblance to Flaubert's Madame Bovary. However, while Madame Bovary's unattainable dream world is inspired by her reading romances, Hetty "had never read a novel" so she can't "find a shape for her expectations" regarding love. Unable to foresee any possible consequences for her actions, she allows herself to be seduced by Arthur Donnithorne, the old squire's grandson, who stands to inherit the land on which most of the Hayslopers live.Arthur is a radiant example of Eliot's mastery in complicated character creation. Acutely aware of his position in society, he has the kind of charisma with which he can talk to his tenants politely but with just the slightest hint of condescension and completely win their respect for his authority. In fact, he is so accustomed to receiving nothing but admiration for his apparent moral integrity that it comes as a genuine shock to him when Adam, a man he truly likes, reproaches him for his reckless behavior with Hetty, a girl both he and Adam truly love. And the tragic irony is that Hetty doesn't really deserve either of them.Religion plays a curious role in the story. Adam's brother Seth is infatuated with a woman named Dinah Morris, a cousin's cousin to Hetty and a Methodist evangelistic preacher who was inspired by Wesley in the flesh. Her influence among the villagers comes to the attention of the Anglican Rev. Dauphin Irwine, the vicar of Hayslope, who visits her to try to figure out her game and concludes that she's essentially a good woman with a good heart. Indeed, she is the first one to sense that Hetty may be headed for troubled waters and earnestly offers her spiritual guidance, to which Hetty responds with distrust and irritation. Most powerful of the novel's images is that of Hetty wandering through the darkness and dangers of the English countryside in desperate search of the departed Arthur, carrying with her a symbol of their tormented love, and oblivious to the goodness of Adam, whose only desire is to protect her from the disappointment, shame, and disgrace that result from her pitiful reliance on Arthur's ability to buy her pretty things. But Eliot is too fond of her hero to let him suffer for long when the tides of fate come crashing violently to their inevitable shores, and the ultimate product is a novel of great compassion for its characters.

It centers around the life of a master carpenter, Adam Bede, and the people in his village above and equal to his caste, and his conflicted love for a young woman who has also caught the attention of the young aristocrat who is the nominal authority within the community, with tragic consequences. It is not only worth the download, but equally deserves your focus and attention.

There are few writers that I enjoy reading as much. She makes me feel as though I am experiencing the emotions of her characters. I am swept away and have trouble putting her books down. I love the themes she chooses to write about. Her characters are believable and the works are always filled with choices and consequences of everyday people. She does a phenomenal job of weaving the web of the interactions of the characters and demonstrating how each person's actions have affected the others.

If your hear him lock the door, you are already dead! "An atmospheric dramatization of a true crime mystery using source documents and the investigations carried out by detective Frank Geyer to portray a believable and disturbing account of the heinous murders and crimes of the serial killer, Henry H. Holmes." "Insightful thoughts of some characters during their impending death make it too easy to identify with the horror of what they experienced. By the time I got to the end of some parts, I was out of breath, literally!" "Grabs your concentration by the throat with every horrific and appalling act carried out by Holmes and never lets go. The scenes are so well written that you find yourself witnessing everything as if you were there." "This well researched dramatization of the Chicago serial killer, Henry Holmes, because it's based on actual events, isn't something that's always easily digestible; it sits in your gut and gnaws at your insides. It becomes part of your subconscious. You think of it long after you have laid the book aside. No punches are pulled to describe the horrendous crimes carried out by this cold hearted killer." "Hammott's writing is easy to read. He has a real knack for creating great descriptions of scenes, characters, and murderous action." "Absorbingly horrific. As if it were a plane crash that you just can't look away from, because you're intrigued as to how and what will happen next." "An absorbing read that will remain with you long after you've turned the last page." "The prose is very descriptive and emotive. It actually gave me quite an emotional kick in the gut when Holmes's murderous appetite focused on the children. No one was safe from this man." "As fascinating as it is shocking." This book contains the shocking dramatization of real events carried out by the serial killer, Henry Howard Holmes. (Formally titled, Lair of a Serial Killer) America's first documented serial killer, Henry Howard Holmes, holds a dubious and ghastly record that few serial killers in history have surpassed. The 19th century killer is thought to have committed over 200 murders, but, for unexplained reasons, appears to have been overlooked by many true crime enthusiasts. Set partly in the era when "Jack the Ripper" was terrorizing the foggy streets of London with his gruesome slayings in the 19th century, Holmes was committing his nefarious crimes in America, undetected. Holmes, a handsome, well dressed gentleman with high intelligence, was a murderer and accomplished conman. Charm and trust were his most effective weapons and he welded them as expertly as any surgeon would a scalpel. To achieve an easy way to entrap and dispose of his intended victims, Holmes constructed a huge building that when his crimes were revealed, the newspapers of the time named the "Murder Hotel." And this is a fair description as there can be no doubt the building was constructed for the sole purpose of killing his victims and the disposal of their corpses. Though the majority of his victims were women he charmed and ensnared in his murderous grasp, he also murdered men and children. As the trial judge said when charging the jury responsible for convicting Holmes: "Truth is stranger than fiction, and if the story is true—(and it was proven to be true)—it is the most wonderful exhibition of the power of mind over mind I have ever seen, and stranger than any novel I have ever read." After 2 years of research and consultation with modern day serial killer profilers, I believe this to be the most accurate dramatized account of America's first documented serial killer, Henry Holmes.

By Maria I'd recommend this book to historical fiction and non-fiction fans. The book is a dramatisation of the murder spree of H.H.Holmes during the 1880s and 1890s primarily in Chicago. The story was fascinating and enhanced by photographs of the main characters and the locations some of the murders took place. If I hadn't been aware the story was based on facts I would have said the plot was unbelievable especially as he was actually caught out because of horse rustling and an insurance scam rather than his bigamous marriages and the frequent disappearances of guests staying in his specially designed hotel. The writing style was at the mid point between fiction and non-fiction. It lacked the usual fiction techniques of building suspense and character empathy but with the dialogue and descriptions it was far more engaging than a straight forward non-fictional account. The gruesome and bizarre story of Mr Holmes held my interest throughout.I was entertained and learnt about an unusual character I had no previous knowledge of and also a real flavour of Chicago of the time period.

By kybookworm An Insatiable Thirst for Murder is the perfect title for this book, because an insatiable thirst for murder is exactly what Henry Holmes had. He is known as America’s first recorded serial killer, but he should be known as the worst. We’ve had other monsters in this country in the years since Holmes, but none as bad as he was Many serial killers stick to one kind of victim, but Holmes killed women, men, and even children. And he even constructed a hotel designed specifically to make it easy to kill people and dispose of their bodies. If someone made up a fictional character like Holmes, it would be unbelievable, but as they say, truth is stranger than fiction. Ben Hammott has done a fantastic job of telling the story of the monster that was Holmes. He takes the historical facts and dramatizes them in a very entertaining way. If you like true crime, you’ll love this book, but be warned, it might keep you up at night.

The story of Henry Holmes is a compelling one, well-researched, and will give knots to your stomach if you cannot handle gore and death. The methodical way Holmes went about his killings is fascinating. I was thoroughly entertained, and Mr. Hammott's best skill is to bring out emotion from his readers. Highly recommended.

Cambridge, 1921

When amateur sleuth Jonty Stewart comes home with a new case to investigate, his partner Orlando Coppersmith always feels his day has been made. Although, can there be anything to solve in the apparent mercy killing of a disabled man by a doctor who then kills himself, especially when everything takes place in a locked room?

But things are never straightforward where the Cambridge fellows are concerned, so when they discover that more than one person has a motive to kill the dead men—motives linked to another double death—their wits get stretched to the breaking point.

And when the case disinters long buried memories for Jonty, memories about a promise he made and hasn’t kept, their emotions get pulled apart as well. This time, Jonty and Orlando will have to separate fact from fiction—and truth from emotion—to get to the bottom of things.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely Delightful and Satisfying Post WWI Historical Mystery By Sophia Rose Ask and ye shall receive! I wanted another installment that took place after the guys returned from the war (WWI) and that is exactly what I got. For some reason, I feel the way the war years tempered and matured them adds that extra layer of complexity to an already deeply engaging pair of characters. The author has done a splendid job of being flexible in how she writes these two pre and post war so that their experiences shape them instead of them being stagnant no matter what has gone on around them. And maybe I am also partial to characters who are middle-aged and still showing passion, gumption, playfulnes, and ingenuity as they love and detect together. Yep, I'm a big Orlando and Jonty fan if you can't tell. This is book twelve in the Cambridge Fellows series about a pair of college teachers during the late Edwardian through post WWI eras. They eccentrically refuse to be stodgy as they secretly solve crimes and make a relationship work. While its possible to enjoy the stories out of order and each mystery is solved by the end of the book, there is an ongoing story that has developed about these two characters and those around them through the series. This story takes place in 1921. Orlando and Jonty prepare to celebrate their sixteenth anniversary together even as Orlando pines for a new case to stimulate them. Jonty comes home from a social engagement with just such a gift for his lover. It's a locked door double suicide only the sister of one of the men doesn't believe it.There is little real evidence that doesn't point to suicide to go on and so Jonty and Orlando must carefully sift through all the facts and interview all the witnesses. The case dredges up unpleasant memories from Jonty and Orlando's pasts and the men have to decide whether they can continue down the twisty path to the truth. The story reads like a cozy whodunnit as the actual murder took place prior to Jonty and Orlando coming on the scene. It was a ticklish locked room case and I pointed the finger several directions and was just as confounded as the detectives. It was a strong mystery.I also enjoyed the development of the personal story surrounding the mystery that visits Jonty and Orlando's world at the college and also pulls Jonty's sister, Lavinia in along with Ariadne Sheridan as partners in crime. Their sweet moments as a couple are heartwarming and I love it when they banter. All in all, it was another absolutely delightful and satisfying installment in the series. I would recommend these to folks who enjoy gentle m/m historical romantic suspense. My thanks to Riptide Publishing for providing this book in exchange for an honest review.

Complicated Mysteries Bring the Past Back to Haunt Jonty and Orlando in a Must Read By Melanie Marshall A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words.com Review (A MelanieM Review)Rating: 4.5 rounded up to 5 stars out of 5Cambridge, 1921LessonsForSleepingDogs_600x900When amateur sleuth Jonty Stewart comes home with a new case to investigate, his partner Orlando Coppersmith always feels his day has been made. This time, Jonty and Orlando will have to separate fact from fiction—and truth from emotion—to get to the bottom of things.I am always thrilled to find that Jonty Stewart and Orlando Coppersmith have returned for another mystery and here they are back in Charlie Cochrane's Lessons for Sleeping Dogs better than ever. With the last few stories we have been flip flopping back and forth along the time line as laid out in the novels released to date. Lessons for Sleeping Dogs now moves that time line forward once more another year. The men are older, their relationship more established and yet, their love for each other has never been so deep and committed as the one we see here. Orlando and Jonty are starting to think past their time at St. Bride's, perhaps even into retirement age, a startling thought considering we first met them 16 years ago when their world was far more innocent (at least on the surface) and WWI was not even a faint grumbling politically.Charlie Cochrane is easing her Fellows into the aging process with a smoothness most would envy. Its acknowledged, through a gentle gesture or wry remark, a memory to those so sorely missed, lost to war or old age, and then the story moves on as it should. Its a lovely realistic touch and its inclusion makes me appreciate this author even more.Oh the mysteries, yes, more than one. I think this must be the most convoluted of them yet. Shades of Sherlock Holmes! There is an echo of an earlier story but you don't have to have read that to get the gist of it here. Most of that backstory is included. There are several mysteries ongoing at several levels of importance, or so you think. I loved them of course, but I thought that too many puzzles almost took away from the main murder mystery. I get what Charlie was after, but this was a lot to juggle and it was hard for the reader to keep track of all of the facts, places and people while still dealing with the many emotional scenes and fallout for Jonty and Orlando. This aspect of Lessons for Sleeping Dogs kept it from a perfect 5 star rating, but oh it was so close. There is so much darkness here. The aftermath of WWI lingers on in the broken minds and bodies of the soldiers who returned, included Orlando and Jonty. The bleakness and pain of their childhood must also be dealt with once again as parts of their case brings their memories surging back to overwhelm them. Their past histories are alluded to here but this remains another definite reason why theses stories should be read in order (in my opinion). You can only get the full impact of what happened to them in those previous novels not here. Jonty and Orlando have so many issues to deal with, and they must do it using their hearts, their intelligence and their trust in each other. What a outstanding story to have Jonty and Orlando make their reappearance!Yes, it all works out. We get to see some of our favorite secondary characters and Hyacinth Cottage. I absolutely loved it. What's next for Jonty and Orlando? It's anyone's guess and only Charlie Cochrane knows for sure. But one thing is for certain, I will be there, waiting in line, to pick up the story and see what happens next and hoping that the author won't tear my heart out.I highly recommend this story and all the novels in the Cambridge Fellows Mysteries. I have them all listed for you below. Don't miss out on any of them.Cover artist: Lou Harper. I love these new covers. They are my favorite covers so far for the series.

By QUEERcentric Books Reviewed by Kiersten Jane for QUEERcentric BooksLessons for Sleeping Dogs was a satisfying, comfortable, and oh-so British read.Charlie Cochrane’s Lessons for Sleeping Dogs is the twelfth book in her Cambridge Fellows series. Though I recommend you read the other books in the series first (especially since details of previous cases and books are mentioned), I was able to follow along quite nicely though I had not read the others myself. It’s 1921 and Cambridge fellows and amateur sleuths Jonty Stewart and Orlando Coppersmith are experiencing a certain amount of growing pains as they settle back into their lives after the Great War. Orlando, in particular, is dealing with his emotional (not to mention physical) scars, as he thought his long-time partner Jonty had been killed.Jonty hits the nail on the head when he suggests that Orlando needs a new case to focus his attention and improve his mood.Luckily for him, Jonty hears of an unresolved mystery that piques his interest. Edward Atherton, suffering from a long-term degenerative disease is said to have contracted the help of Dr. Paul Robertson to help Edward end his life. The mystery, however, is how both men ended up dead by cyanide inside a locked room. Was it an assisted suicide gone wrong? A double suicide? A murder-suicide? A double murder? Or only an accident? One pressing question remains: how do you possibly solve a case that has happened behind closed doors? As it turns out, more than one person had motivation to kill Atherton and Robertson and their case is linked to another double death. But digging in other people’s lives brings up unpleasant memories for both Jonty and Orlando. To continue with the case, they’ll have to face their demons, but at what cost?Lessons for Sleeping Dogs was an excellent mystery. I found myself captivated by every twist an turn. And that ending—well, I won’t spoil it for you.A delightful and satisfying read!
