Excerpt from A Series of Lessons in Raja YogaThe lessons which compose this volume, originally appeared in the shape of monthly lessons, the first of which was issued in October, 1905, and the twelfth in September, 1906. These lessons met with a hearty and generous response from the public, and the present volume is issued in response to the demand for the lessons in a permanent and durable form. There have been no changes made in the text. The publishers take the liberty to call the attention of the reader to the great amount of information condensed within the space given to each lesson. Students have told us that they have found it necessary to read and study each lesson carefully, in order to absorb the varied information contained within its pages. They have also stated that they have found it advisable to re-read the lessons several times, allowing an interval between each reading and that at each re-reading they would discover information that had escaped them during the course of the previous study. This has been repeated to us so often that we feel justified in mentioning it, that other readers might avail themselves of the same course and plan of study.Following his usual custom, the writer of the lessons has declined to write a preface for this book, claiming that the lessons speak for themselves, and that those for whom they are intended will receive the message contained within them, without any prefatory talk.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. From the Back Cover Followers of the early-20th-century "New Age" philosophy of New Thought believed they could learn the secrets of mind over matter, and one of their most influential teachers--enormously popular writer and editor William Walker Atkinson, writing pseudonymously here--revealed to them, in this 1906 work, the teachings of Raja Yoga. His lessons cover:
* the ego's mental tools * the expansion of the self * mental control * the cultivation of attention * the cultivation of perception * subconscious character building * and much more.

About the Author Born in Maryland in 1862, he began working life at 15 in his parent’s grocery store. He married at age 27, and became a successful attorney in Pennsylvania. However, stress and over-strain brought him to a physical and mental breakdown that ended in a financial disaster. He looked for healing and in the late 1880’s he found the principles of New Thought, and in applying them he restored his health, mental vigor and material prosperity. He began writing articles on the truths he had discovered. His “A Mental Science Catechism,” appeared in Charles Fillmore's ‘Modern Thought’ in 1889. By the early 1890’s he moved to Chicago, then a major center for New Thought, and became an active promoter of the movement as an editor and author. He wrote his first book, Thought-Force in Business and Everyday Life, in 1900, a series of lessons in personal magnetism, psychic influence, thought-force, concentration, will-power, and practical mental science. Soon after he met Sydney Flower, a well-known New Thought publisher, and in December 1901 he became editor of Flower's New Thought magazine (until 1905). He wrote dozens of articles in the magazine; and later on, he was a regular contributor to Elizabeth Towne’s Magazine, Nautilus. Throughout his subsequent career, Atkinson wrote and published over 100 different books, some under his own name and many under pseudonyms such as Yogi Ramacharaka, Theron Q. Dumont, Theodore Sheldon, Magus Incognito, Edward Walker, Three Initiates and Swami Bhakta Vishita. Among the first to develop the concept of Law of Attraction, Atkinson is considered, together with Orison Swett Marden and Wallace Wattles, the masters of self-development and positive thinking, and the real promoters of New Thought, a movement that came very much to life again with the Millennium He died November 22, 1932 in Los Angeles, California , after 50 years of successful career in law, business, writing, occultism, and a life surrounded by mysteries, including his own death.

By Zahkeriuh briefly, the teachings found in this book are intended to assist you in taking back the power over your own mind. most of us are controlled by the various factors of our minds (our fears, passions, affinities, etc.) and have forgotten who is REALLY driving this vehicle that we identify as "Me." these teachings are like road signs on the road back home.this book, Raja Yoga, is rich with value. like all things, the teachings found in this book cannot be objectively valued; the Candidate (one who would seek teachings such as these) must find the value for him/herself. for me, these teachings cannot be compared to anything else that i've been taught. i'm getting to know myself on a much larger level. i am sooo thankful for these teachings. the value is in the fruits of doing the work.i highly recommend this book for anyone who feels drawn to read it. follow your instinct...your first inclination is often the most sincere one. also, take your time with it...Rome wasn't built in one day.

I had previously read some of Yogi Ramacharaka's more introductory books. He has a clear, lucid style of writing, and is able to encourage the spiritual seeker in the exploration of consciousness. I did some of the exercises in the book at that time and experienced some remarkable effects, including what might be termed "cosmic consicousness." And I could feel my intelligence improving (later verified by an IQ test). I highly recommend the book for anyone interested in exploring this topic. Though we are told that "Yogi Ramacharaka" was a pseudonym, what does that matter if the material is helpful? I haven't given the book 5 stars because I reserve that for "perfect" books, and few tomes fit that category. But I'm glad to see that "Raja Yoga" is still in print. It's been in print for almost a century. Surely that must be some indication of its worth.
