5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I can't thank you enough Lucinda for the beautiful addition to the Roxton Series! By Chiz bits This book is a great addition to the Roxton series! It takes you on a trip down memory lane and surprises you with letters you didn't know about. It reminds you of the deep, deep love between Roxton and Antonia and their family and how steadfast it remained. You finally get to read some of the letters mentioned in the books, wondering what was in them! And a couple of excerpts from Antonia's diary. Reading this book made me feel that my most favorite people were alive again! Happy tears! It left me with a longing, to visit my favorite family again! So I shall re-read the series and fall in love with the Roxton family all over again! PS....make sure you have the Kleenex handy, because you're going to need it!
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Roxton. Sigh! By Danker I love historic letters and read them constantly. Have done for decades. And I love (almost) all of Brant's books.So I should be wildly enthusiastic about this combination of letters + romance + Brant.I'm enthusiastic, but with some reservations. The first reservation is explained easily - not every letter grabs me by the throat. (Actually, I don't think they are all meant to do so, but the ones that don't suffer when compared with the many that definitely hit the spot.) The letters written by Antonia and the old Duke, for example, made me teary. And some others added depth to plot lines and character development that I wish I'd had as I read the relevant stories - but they just weren't as passionate/romantic as the Roxton/Antonia exchange. So, in toto, I found the letters to be mildly interesting through to absolutely fascinating.The further reservation has taken me a while to figure out. (I was a beta reader for Brant and wish I had worked this through when giving my initial reactions to most of these letters, instead of waiting until now, so apologies to Brant.) This reservation concerns the "voices" in the letters. Clever, well-researched and literate writer though Brant is - she doesnt, in my view, manage to pull off the hugely tough task of creating very different voices for each and every letter in this volume. For many of them, maybe there is a sameness in tone, expression, language? I haven't done a thorough analysis, so I'm not sure. I just know that I didn't feel as if every letter had come from a different pen, a different mind. Some no. Some yes. It is a total yes for the old Duke/Antonia correspondence. It is emotional, poetic, passionate and delivered in two uniquely personal writing styles. Once again, it outshines the newsy exchanges of others.So there are enough gems in this volume for me to be happy to have bought it and confident that there are sufficient elements I will re-read. As I've said, the gems are mainly the creations by Roxton, which I found to be deliciously romantic. (I'd be in seventh heaven to receive such declarations.) And a couple of Antonia's letters well and truly grabbed me as well. Those parts of this companion text are, in my view, lovely additions to the original stories.Interestingly, I didn't notice the issues that irritated and annoyed other reviewers, any of the times I read the letters (even Antonia's inconsistent grammar, which was commented on by OLT- it totally passed me by).I bought this volume upon release, despite having, as mentioned previously, read much (but not all) of the material prior to publication. I then read this volume quickly from front to back, discarded what didn't interest me and came back to read (and re-read) the words written by Roxton and Antonia.Lark's review made it clear that she disliked the Author's Note on poetry. I loved the reminder about Aphra Ben's poetry and saw it more as a proper acknowledgement by Brant that she had used/adjusted some of her work. Poetry Is my main reading love and I didn't find Brant's comments at all patronising - which isn't to say that lark and others aren't entitled to have felt that way. I usually/often share the views of lark, OLT, sandy milan and Judge Tabor. Not so this time. I know they will probably say it is my Brant blind spot, but they won't convince me.I do have one more reservation about this collection. Yes, it is definitely not a stand-alone, but Brant has been very clear - even in the title - that it is designed as a companion piece. That does, however, raise particular issues.I found that reading all the letters in one hit was overwhelming, as one needs to remember all the plots, characters and nuances, in some cases for books read ages ago. However, I don't think Brant means them to be read that way. I have no inside knowledge, but I expect she intends each set of letters etc to be read alongside the relevant story. As she titles the text, it is a companion read. In my view, the book would work best if a reader used paper versions and had this companion piece at hand as she read each title. It is more difficult, although not impossible, to do this when reading, as I do, online.I think that readers of all formats would be happier if each set of letters sat within, or as addenda, to the book which gives birth to them. In my view, they would certainly fit better that way. But that's just my view. At this stage, this is not possible, but maybe as each book is released in a new edition?I'm giving this 4 stars, not solely because of Roxton's poetry and prose. He is my main star, but there are some other gems by Antonia (and even by others, which I've not mentioned) and they all contribute to a solid 4. I know I will re-read the best of the letters. I can't help myself and they will call to me.PS This should show as a verified AMAZON purchase. It doesn't because I live in Australia, but choose to review on the U.S. site.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful Love Story By Nancy A. Steen I have read the first four books of the Roxton Saga four times each. "Eternally Yours" is the perfect companion to the first three stories. The letters in this book add shading and background to this wonderful family. The letters are comprised of business dealings, family matters, stress, love and friendship. Three of these letters stand out in the depth of emotion that is shown.First of these is the Renard's letter to Antonia the day after they are married. We get to see the depth of his love for his new wife. Second is Renard's goodbye letter to his son, Julian. He expresses his pride in his son and their family and cautions Julian on what will be profound grief for Antonia upon his death. This grief is shown in "The Autumn Duchess."Third is Renard's letter to Antonia and had me sobbing. Renard expresses his regret at having to leave Antonia but at the same time he is torn with the happiness of rejoining his parents, sister and brother-in-law. This is a beautiful love letter and there was no way to stop my tears while reading it.I can't wait for the next installment of the Roxton letters. Or for that matter, the next installment in the Roxton Saga.
