At the foot of the Continental Divide, rancher Frank Redmond struggles to maintain his land amidst the bleakness of Depression-era Montana. Married but childless, Frank’s wondering if the long-term future of the ranch is worth the effort. For that matter, he’s considering much the same about his wife Abby.

When a stray dog wanders onto the ranch, Frank’s first impulse is to shoot it as vermin. Abby and Clay, Frank’s father, insist on adopting the mutt, naming him Stranger.

For Frank, it’s both the last straw and a convenient excuse. He parlays his skill as a stone carver into a job at Deer Lodge state prison, fifty miles from home. There he labors over a headstone for the warden’s terminally ill wife.

When he finally returns home, he finds Stranger more a member of the family than himself. Frank needs to regain his family’s trust and prove himself. To do so, he’ll need to emulate the dog he once considered killing.

A pensively introspective but hard-hitting read, Stranger’s Dance delves into the challenges and desperation of Montana ranch life in the 1930s and how animals can prove the catalyst for human healing.

From the Back Cover The damn dog was the last straw.   Ranching in the shadow of the Continental Divide won't make a man rich, particularly in Montana during the 1930s. Frank Redmond's been doing what he can to get by, but with no children he has to question why he should bother with the long-term future of his land.   When the dog shows up, Frank has no use for it--strays are pests, to be shot like any other vermin. His wife and father disagree, taking the mongrel in and naming it Stranger.   That's it as far as Frank's concerned--he leaves both ranch and family to work as a stone carver. When he finally returns home, he finds himself unwelcome and mistrusted. If he wants to reconcile with his family, Frank's going to have to prove his worth to them--and to a protective, loyal dog named Stranger.

Frank has a gift for the former, but to say he struggles a bit with the latter would be an understatement. Relationships are at the heart of Stranger's Dance. When we let those important, permanent things go, we threaten the other good things in our lives as well.Frank's life is hard enough, and when a straggly stray mutt comes along, to Frank it's just another mouth to feed. "Stranger", as he comes to be called, plays an important role in Frank's growth back to emotional wholeness. But to say that this is "a book about a dog" would be only tangentially correct. It would be like saying "Searching for Bobby Fischer" was "a movie about chess" or "Moneyball" was "a movie about baseball". It is instead, a well-written story with fully-developed characters that pulls you into its time and place - my favorite kind of story.A paraphrase, but I loved this line: "We put up monuments, not for the one who passed on, but as a permanent reminder to those still here." Stranger's Dance reminds us that no matter how hard life gets, some things were meant to last forever, and we must carry on and protect those things above all else.

The author gives the reader a true feel for the hardships of ranching in rural Montana during the aftermath of the Great Depression and knowing that Mr. Kechley grew up in that area, it has the feel of authenticity, perhaps from family stories about the 'old days' he heard while growing up. Though it is never implicitly stated what breed of dog Stranger is, little hints are dropped here and there and it eventually becomes clear that he is a Rottweiler. While this doesn't really impact the story in any way, it just tickled me as the Rottweiler is my breed of choice and I can easily imagine that the heroic actions attributed to Stranger exactly portray the characteristics of the breed. I recommend it for teens and up---there are parts about the human relationships that might be a bit confusing for the younger reader.

The descriptions of the people and place were happily familiar to me By Nicole Cohn For anyone who has ever driven past an old ranch site and wondered about the lives of the people that once lived there, this book would be for them. The descriptions of the people and place were happily familiar to me. The time period was also an experience. The shifting point of view was interesting, leading me to take sides in the family drama. I was expecting more of Stranger's point of view, and it would have been welcomed. I would recommend this book to dog lovers and anyone interested in Montana or historical fiction.
