Guy Edwardes, a retired soldier and adventurer, has recently returned from a single-handed yachting voyage to the Arctic. But when Guy returns from the icy waters of the Svalbard archipelago, he is a very different man to the one that cast off. He is diminished, spent, and soon after Guy takes his own life. No one can understand why. His long-time partner, Karen, is spurred into action, desperately seeking the truth, nursing her own sadness … and hiding her own secrets. Persuading Nick Allan, a friend and beneficiary of Guy’s yacht, to join her, they cast off on their own voyage of discovery, hoping to find out what happened to him ‘up there’. Trying to piece together clues that seem almost meaningless, what they eventually discover is a man’s soul stripped bare. In the face of Karen’s pain Allan attempts to make sense of Guy’s conduct, and before they know it their plight begins to mirror their late friend’s… Following Karen and Nick as they try to recreate Guy’s ‘heroic’ voyage to Svalbard, ‘The Ice Mask’ is a powerful novel of friendship and human endeavour in the face of nature’s adversity. Praise for Richard Woodman: “Will definitely win readers and whet appetites for the sequels” Booklist Captain Richard Martin Woodman LVO is an English novelist and naval historian who retired in 1997 from a 37 year nautical career, mainly working for Trinity House, to write full-time. About the Author Woodman considered one of the strongest voices in nautical fiction today. He lives in England.

From AudioFile In this fascinating tale of a voyage to the icy waters of the Svalbard archipelago, Wale imbues Nick Allen with charm and dispassion. Nick is attempting to find out what happened to his friend, Guy Edwardes, who sailed to the Arctic alone and came back to commit suicide. Karen, Guy's longtime partner, accompanies Nick. Wale's subdued and sensitive reading captures the emotion of Karen's desperate search for answers, as well as Nick's cool-headed logical perspective. Wale conveys the atmospheric feel of their voyage of discovery and the tragedy of Guy's death. His natural delivery sounds as if he's relating his own experience. 0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An entertaining adventure at sea By HORAK Nicholas Allan (Nick), the narrator, tells the story of his friend Guy Edwards. Guy, a successful seaman, lived for fifteen years with Karen, a producer for BBC radio. Guy possessed a thirty-eight foot yacht named "Rolissa" and one day he undertook a solo voyage to Spitbergen in the Barents Sea. Before the voyage, Guy used to be a boastful and confident man, even defiant at times, courageous and determined at heart. But when he returned from Spitbergen, he was a changed man, as though he had been damaged by the experience. He was depressed, hardly talking to Karen, in fact rejected her with a strange finality. One evening, Karen found Guy dead in his office - he had shot himself. As Karen and Nick embark on the "Rolissa" to retrace Guy's adventure in Norway one year later in order to understand what could possibly have transformed the man to such an extend, they are quite unaware of the terrifying adventure which lay ahead of them.
