In 1890, five year old Randa Brewster was snatched from the loving arms of her Seminole mother by a father who, when he could not sell her to a workhouse, left her in the care of her prominent grandfather in Philadelphia. Life for Randa in the Brewster household was hard because of an uppity aunt and a pair of cousins who considered the young girl beneath their standing. They labeled her the shame of the elite black Brewster family, a dark mark on the good Brewster name, and made her life miserable because of it. Unwanted and unloved in a house filled with strangers, things looked bleak for Randa, but her circumstances took a sudden and dramatic change when her grandfather was made aware of her plight. Vowing to her that things would be different from here on out, her grandfather took a shy, introverted little girl under his wing and over time molded her into a strong, intelligent young woman. After the death of her beloved grandfather, the now wealthy Randa, thanks to a deathbed blessing, moved to Tullahassee, Oklahoma with the desire to locate the mother she was taken away from, but what she found instead was a life she never imagined she would ever have.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Love By lynn This book was amazing. It reminded me of Beverly Jenkins who also writes historical romance. This story tugged at my heart strings and shows how resilient a person can be. Randa was faced with hardships from the start but kept going. There was a destiny carved out for her and no matter who was against her destiny prevailed. In the end she received a love worth more than any amount of money. I was absolutely moved this book, the historical information, the characters. Don't hesitate, just buy it and I PROMISE you will not be disappointed.

The Gift Wrapping Book: Over 150 Ideas for All Occasions (Dover Craft Books), by Caroline Birkett

From Booklist Gift wrapping, according to former textile designer Birkett, is a feat to be accomplished and then admired. Her instructions include those both nimble and not and range from covering a basic box to fashioning crackers for all occasions. There is something for everyone in these 150-plus different projects. Each runs about a page or two with minimal directions, large color photographs, and occasional tips on best/alternate methods. Some of the more unusual ideas: a rose-embellished bow, an origami box, a paper fan bow, and woven paper baskets, among others. At the end are the basics: materials, tools, and the five fundamental techniques (measuring, transferring, scoring, folding, and cutting). This handy how-to will leave gift givers rapt with pleasure. Fantastic Tips on Gift Wrapping Techniques and Ideas By iiiireader This review is for the newly updated 2015 version of this book. After wrapping Christmas presents for three children for many years, I had lost my technique for nicely wrapped presents and instead had learned a quick dash assembly line kind of wrapping. Now that I have more time, I wanted to re-learn my old skills and so I was happy to try this book out. Turns out, I not only picked up my old skills but learned a few new techniques as well.In addition to wrapping instructions, the book tells you how to make various boxes, bags, and other ways to “wrap” your present to get a unique presentation. It is giving me fantastic ideas of how to recycle a lot of things that I have around the house and make them beautiful and useful again.I received a digital ARC copy of this book from the publisher, Dover Publications , via Netgalley.

Would make a good gift for a beginner By Florida Kayaker This book has step by step instructions on how to wrap a gift and have it perfectly presentable. It includes ways to make fancy bows and even a section on making your own gift tags. There are instructions on lining lightweight paper before you wrap, aligning edges etc.I did find that most of the basic stuff was pretty average and included things that I already knew how to do. My husband however, could really benefit from this book! That leads me to believe it is really a beginners book and that I am ready for a more advanced version.I think it would make a nice gift for someone that has not had much experience with gift wrapping.

Luxury reference book By Amazon Customer INITIAL THOUGHTSSo like most people (if they're being 100% honest) I believe we can all use a little help with how to wrap gifts, especially if they are an awkward size, or shape! So I was looking forward to reading this one. I did actually read it when I was about half way through my Christmas Gift wrapping, I just didn't have time to write the review until now.MY REVIEWI received a free e-copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. The cover features some brightly, beautifully wrapped gifts. . . just waiting to be handed out to the recipients! So I was eager to learn how I could make my gifts look as good as the ones on the cover. So would the cover make me pick this book up from the shelf? Yes, it would, the gifts on the cover are rather impressively wrapped. There are quite a few pictures within the book, as well as small boxes with extra tips within them. There are also some "How To Do" photographs that walk you through the whole process step by step.I love an attractively wrapped gift with perhaps a striking bow or other ornamentation on it too. I readily admit to getting all tangled and usually stuck up with the tape when I am wrapping and as for putting ribbons and fancy bows on, I've normally had enough of the whole wrapping process by the time the last piece of tape has finally been wrestled into place!I found the book quite inspirational and I enjoyed the step by step photographs showing how to do things. Maybe it's because I was reviewing an e-copy but I feel I must say I was disappointed by how the book appeared on my tablet and kindle. Having pointed that out I think having the paperback would obviously solve this problem! I think it is a book you would probably purchase for yourself though I'm not sure I would pay very expensive for such a book myself, though I think if you want really prettily wrapped gifts you would probably find the book a useful book to keep going back to, especially for a gift that was an awkward shape!Did I enjoy the book? It was informative, just not as much as I had hoped, and in my opinion the formatting of the e-copy seriously let the book down and spoilt the experience for me.Would I recommend the book? I would yes, but to be bought as a physical book!FINAL THOUGHTSThis book would be a bit of a luxury purchase for me, though it would sit on my book shelves and probably be referred to regularly.Includes how to make pretty bows from ribbons or paper. Plenty of step by step pics to follow, good job as very little text descriptions. Some useful parts in Tips sections. Sadly format was pretty poor as I attempted to read via kindle app on my tablet. This would probably work much better as a glossy paperback!

Ironically, his book titled Air Patrol duplicates both the theme and in some areas word for word duplication of this book. This book is better written and flows better than Air Patrol. So I preferred this book over Air Patrol which I don't think is one of his better works.

I found it hard to like any of the characters and was not really drawn into their lives or struggles. Most of his other books are much better.

Perfectly scanned copy of original medieval manuscript. The Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry is the most famous and possibly the best surviving example of French Gothic manuscript illumination, showing the late International Gothic phase of the style. It is a book of hours: a collection of prayers to be said at the canonical hours. It was created between c. 1412 and 1416 for the extravagant royal bibliophile and patron John, Duke of Berry, by the Limbourg brothers. When the three painters and their sponsor died in 1416, possibly victims of plague, the manuscript was left unfinished. It was further embellished in the 1440s by an anonymous painter, who many art historians believe was Barthélemy d'Eyck. In 1485-1489, it was brought to its present state by the painter Jean Colombe on behalf of the Duke of Savoy. Acquired by the Duc d'Aumale in 1856, the book is now MS 65 in the Musée Condé, Chantilly, France. Consisting of a total of 206 leaves of very fine quality parchment, 30 cm in height by 21.5 cm in width, the manuscript contains 66 large miniatures and 65 small. The design of the book, which is long and complex, has undergone many changes and reversals. Many artists contributed to its miniatures, calligraphy, initials, and marginal decorations, but determining their precise number and identity remains a matter of debate. Painted largely by artists from the Low Countries, often using rare and costly pigments and gold, and with an unusually large number of illustrations, the book is one of the most lavish late medieval illuminated manuscripts. After three centuries in obscurity, the Très Riches Heures gained wide recognition in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, despite having only very limited public exposure at the Musée Condé. Its miniatures helped to shape an ideal image of the Middle Ages in the collective imagination, often being interpreted to serve political and nationalist agendas. This is particularly true for the calendar images, which are the most commonly reproduced. They offer vivid representations of peasants performing agricultural work as well as aristocrats in formal attire, against a background of remarkable medieval architecture. Include a unique illustration!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This is simply one of the most beautiful books ever created By JSB_DDS No need to comment on the contents; this is simply one of the most beautiful books ever created. Compared to the flatness of a paper facsimile, the illuminations really jump out on a display. My only niggle is I wish it had been scanned at higher resolution, hence four stars instead of five. On an iPad, you can zoom to about the 1/4-page level before things begin to get fuzzy, so it's not terrible. However, if you want to study the brushwork, or read the tiny script in the January sky, no chance. Still, good value for the price.

Excerpt from A Catena of Buddhist Scriptures From the ChineseOf the translations found in this book, several have already appeared in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society. Having revised these and added others to complete what I conceive to be the cycle of the Buddhist development, I now publish the entire series as a contribution towards a more general acquaintance with Buddhist Literature in China. The Buddhist Canon in that country, as it was arranged between the years 67 and 1285 A.D., includes 1410 distinct works, comprising 5586 books. But these form only a fractional part of the entire Buddhist Literature which is spread throughout the Empire. And yet of all this we have been content, hitherto, to remain profoundly ignorant. It is difficult to understand how we can claim, under these circumstances, to have any precise idea as to the religious condition of the Chinese people, or even to appreciate the phraseology met with in their ordinary books. Our first duty, surely, should be to turn our attention to the study of some portion at least of these extensive Scriptures.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Guy Edwardes, a retired soldier and adventurer, has recently returned from a single-handed yachting voyage to the Arctic. But when Guy returns from the icy waters of the Svalbard archipelago, he is a very different man to the one that cast off. He is diminished, spent, and soon after Guy takes his own life. No one can understand why. His long-time partner, Karen, is spurred into action, desperately seeking the truth, nursing her own sadness … and hiding her own secrets. Persuading Nick Allan, a friend and beneficiary of Guy’s yacht, to join her, they cast off on their own voyage of discovery, hoping to find out what happened to him ‘up there’. Trying to piece together clues that seem almost meaningless, what they eventually discover is a man’s soul stripped bare. In the face of Karen’s pain Allan attempts to make sense of Guy’s conduct, and before they know it their plight begins to mirror their late friend’s… Following Karen and Nick as they try to recreate Guy’s ‘heroic’ voyage to Svalbard, ‘The Ice Mask’ is a powerful novel of friendship and human endeavour in the face of nature’s adversity. Praise for Richard Woodman: “Will definitely win readers and whet appetites for the sequels” Booklist Captain Richard Martin Woodman LVO is an English novelist and naval historian who retired in 1997 from a 37 year nautical career, mainly working for Trinity House, to write full-time. The Ice Mask, by Richard Woodman

About the Author Woodman considered one of the strongest voices in nautical fiction today. He lives in England.

From AudioFile In this fascinating tale of a voyage to the icy waters of the Svalbard archipelago, Wale imbues Nick Allen with charm and dispassion. Nick is attempting to find out what happened to his friend, Guy Edwardes, who sailed to the Arctic alone and came back to commit suicide. Karen, Guy's longtime partner, accompanies Nick. Wale's subdued and sensitive reading captures the emotion of Karen's desperate search for answers, as well as Nick's cool-headed logical perspective. Wale conveys the atmospheric feel of their voyage of discovery and the tragedy of Guy's death. His natural delivery sounds as if he's relating his own experience. Guy, a successful seaman, lived for fifteen years with Karen, a producer for BBC radio. Guy possessed a thirty-eight foot yacht named "Rolissa" and one day he undertook a solo voyage to Spitbergen in the Barents Sea. Before the voyage, Guy used to be a boastful and confident man, even defiant at times, courageous and determined at heart. But when he returned from Spitbergen, he was a changed man, as though he had been damaged by the experience. He was depressed, hardly talking to Karen, in fact rejected her with a strange finality. One evening, Karen found Guy dead in his office - he had shot himself. As Karen and Nick embark on the "Rolissa" to retrace Guy's adventure in Norway one year later in order to understand what could possibly have transformed the man to such an extend, they are quite unaware of the terrifying adventure which lay ahead of them.

Unicorn's Blood, by Patricia Finney

From Library Journal Using some of the same real and imagined characters that appeared in Firedrake's Eye (St. Martin's, 1992) but standing totally on its own, Finney's latest work is another superior novel of intrigue during the reign of Elizabeth I of England. This time the plot revolves around a long-lost diary that the queen kept as a young woman, which not only contains her will naming Mary Queen of Scots her heir but also reveals a liaison with Thomas Seymour that ended in an aborted pregnancy. Now Mary is imprisoned and Elizabeth is daily being hounded by her advisors to order her execution. If the diary, embossed with a unicorn on the cover, can be found, these men will have additional ammunition to persuade Elizabeth that Mary must die in order to prevent the succession of a Catholic to the English throne. Finney, who studied history at Oxford, effectively re-creates Elizabethan England, describing its bawdy, colorful, and cruel aspects with a sure hand. Essential for public libraries.?Nancy Pearl, Washington Ctr. for the Book, SeattleCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews Another gutsy, dagger-flashing, chain-rattling, wit-wrestling tale of danger, dark agonies, and royal power-plays, by Finney (The Firedrake's Eye, 1992, etc.), again centered in the 16th-century reign of that complex, brilliant, and terrifying Tudor, Elizabeth I of England. Set four years after the events of Firedrake (in which the queen was saved from assassination), the story here picks up with the search for a book containing Elizabeth's youthful confession, a personal diary that, if found by enemies, could topple her Crown. In 158687, the Thames freezes and Londoners play on the ice, while in the Tower a soldierly man without a memory (thanks to a blow to the head) is being tortured as a ``Papist'' at the direction of spymaster Davison, a religious fanatic among the Queen's advisors. The prisoner, David Becket, turns out to be not what he seems, and he's eventually moved to Fleet Prison, where he finds that his cellmate is Simon Ames, presumed dead, his former friend and partner in saving the Queen. Eventually, David and Simon, with the help of a Catholic priest, manage to escape Fleet. Meanwhile, plotters, spies, and counterspies are hard at work: David and the priest (with different agendas) work in harness to trace the diary; ancient Mary, a drunken ex-nun in rags, hides it, planning a dowry for her grandchild; the ``Queen's Fool,'' Thomasina, a minute person ``a yard high,'' profitably roams London's streets in the guise of a child; and back at the palace, Elizabeth faces blackmail. Many will die, but Elizabeth, once ``bent like a damascene steel blade . . . whips back with devastating effect.'' A hot-blooded, noisy cast, including the great Queen; shudderingly graphic details of torture chambers and executions; and an exhilarating facsimile of the grandeur and grunge of Elizabethan London: in all, a roaring good tale, with a poetic sensibility and judicious sense of humanity at its core. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. Review ...[an] intricate novel, as carefully laid out as a Renaissance knot garden... Swiftly moving and deftly woven, this courtly tale is as engrossing as it is improbable--and thus all the more delightful. -- The New York Times Book Review, Julie Gray

By Zenbob This book is a continuation of the same author's FIREDRAKE'S EYE, but the writing is even better. The premise is fascinating: the Queen of England once wrote down information in a diary that, if found by her enemies, could destroy her and bring down her reign. Many of the characters from FIREDRAKE'S EYE return in this reprise, but the plotting is more intricate, the characters even more sophisticated. And Queen Elizabeth is worth the price of the book herself. Highly recommended. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was that the same narrative style that Finney used in FIREDRAKE'S EYE (which allows characters to view the proceedings as if from heaven) is rather stilted and takes some getting used to. Other than that, it's a great historical novel.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. What a great read! By A Customer I highly recommend this book. This is a literate and intelligent thriller with wonderfully researched and vivid historical details. The characters are interesting and engaging and play their parts in the complicated plot with aplomb. The protrayal of Elizabeth I's character and situation is superb. I found this book very hard to put down and eagerly await another installment from Ms. Finney.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Holy Tudor cloak and dagger narrator! By Amazon Customer This is the first book by Finney I've read, but she really is an excellent writer. Her prose is just beautiful. Her characters are complicated and intriguing. She may be the John Le Carré of Elizabethan historical novelists, but this daring Tudor spy novel also happens to be narrated by the Virgin Mary herself (that takes guts) and depends on the actions of a former nun who was disenfranchised during the Great Schism and is now an ex-prostitute, old, haggard, drinking her life away and a cleaning woman at the royal um, outhouses, who just wants to aquire a dowry for her great-granddaughter. Between the outhouses and various prisons Unicorn's blood has a bleak feel, but there is much adventure combined with holiness, and Queen Elizabeth's moments are priceless.

Gigi keeps you on your toes as you follow hip academic Jaya Jones (great name!) from San Francisco to London to Scotland on the trail of treasure and an old beau. She's great at making you feel like you right there beside Jaya, from her big appetite to her heels to the Scottish inn with its resident characters. The mystery kept me wondering right until the end. Can't recommend it enough!

14 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Diverse Dr. Jones By Hfineisen This debut featuring historian extrordinaire Dr. Jaya Jones could and should develop a great following. Artifact is a fun and informative introduction to a cast of characters as diverse as Dr. Jones is, and Pandian captures the quirks and distinctions with aplomb. Conversation is one of the most enjoyable features of this mystery as Pandian has a knack for dialogue and cadence that is charming without turning anyone into a caricature of their nationality. The romance is not overdone, and there is much to look forward to in future installments as we learn more about Lane, the love interest, and Jaya herself. The historical and archeological facts interspersed throughout made this most enjoyable and I can only hope this continues in the next adventure. And I will be reading the next adventure...This was a goodreads giveaway.

Don't read anything into it or expect more than an enjoyable bit of fun and light diversion of an afternoon. If Bob Lewis wrote a novel, it would be along the lines of Gulliver's Travels to the Narrow Neck of Land. If he concocted a narrative poem, it would sound like Homer (Simpson, not the Greek guy). But what fell miraculously into his lap, or rather his back yard, was a heap of tin that turned out to be the long-lost diaries of that Book of Mormon malcontent Laman, the oldest and most misunderstood of Nephi's brothers. (Who names their first-born Laman?)Now, after all these years (2,541 to be exact), Laman finally gets to tell his side of the story. It sounds vaguely like Nephi's account, but it takes on a strangely modern, quirkily idiomatic style resembling that of its translator-only furthering the proof of its historicity. The Lost Plates of Laman will prove amusement and delight for anyone who has a nagging desire to know more about their spiritual heritage.

By A Customer If you're a Mormon or otherwise familiar with the first part of "The Book of Mormon," the subject matter here will be instantly recognizable. However, the catch is that this book is the same story, but written from Laman's point of view! This book is hillarious!

Almost Havana, by Chris Belland, Fred Belland

About the Author F.W. Belland and Chris Belland are brothers born in Miami, Florida, in 1944 and 1948 respectively. The brothers grew up in Miami when it was much different from the Miami of today. There was much more of a rural influence and, in fact, the home in which they grew up was on the very edge of what was the Everglades but is now a developed part of West Kendall. The neighbors around where they grew up were early pioneers of Miami and, in fact, their closest friends were the founders of Lemon City which eventually became the City of Miami. The grandfather was Captain Bob, one of the storied barefoot mailmen. After high school, the brothers took a divergent path. Fred went off to school and eventually graduated from Florida State University. He then did a stint with the Marine Corps in Vietnam. Chris went to the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Finance and Commerce, and moved back to Miami. In 1973, both brothers moved to the island city of Key West, Florida, where they were instrumental in restoring the center part of the downtown area on Duval Street, which is today a vibrant tourist destination in the state of Florida. All of the stories contained herein resonate from the rich history of early Florida and its close contacts with Central and South America. Today, Chris still lives in Key West with his wife, Piper, and Fred lives on the rim of a volcanic lake in Granada, Nicaragua, with his wife Nica and their two children.

Homesteading is a lifestyle choice. It is where we look at ourselves and finally say “I am going to stand on my own two feet and life the life I choose to live.” In today’s modern society we rely on others way too much. We rely on people to give us food, shelter, jobs and everything else we feel that we are entitled to. The problem with this way of thinking is that we have lost our way and as a result our society is in the trouble it is in today. We have sat back way too long waiting for others to solve our problems for us. Well the day has come for us to stand on our own two feet and take responsibility for our own actions. In this book you will learn what it is to be a homesteader and learn tips, tricks and techniques that you can use to become more self-reliant in your day to day activities. In this day of self-publishing, many are simply a bunch of sentences copied directly from the internet and pasted together, then titled and called a "book".In the case of "Beginning Homesteading: Your Path to a Self-Sufficient Lifestyle (Prepper's Survival Gardening & Pantry Stockpile)" I am happy to report that this is not the case. Woo Hoo! Finally. Now, that doesn't mean that this is a full and complete journal of everything you could ever want to know about homesteading all in on simple, easy to read volume. Well, it IS simple, and it is easy to read. But what this book showed me is just what it promised. A beginner's guide that is simple, straightforward, and gives as much page space to the "why you shouldn't" as to the "why you should". Let's face it - not everyone is cut out for homesteading. And if you find that you are, there are still things you may not want to do, or simply don't have the knowledge or desire to do. I may have cut up dead bodies in a laboratory situation, but I couldn't raise a steer and butcher it. I would be more likely to make a pet out of it!These are simple, logical topics on homesteading that will encourage you to research and learn before you make that big step. A great little beginners guide. Matt Riley did a good job of making things clear and encouraging you to learn, make goals, and decide if homesteading is for you. Recommended.

Shaw For good reason, homesteading is a growing movement that I wanted to learn more about. I didn’t know where to start, though, until I came across Beginning Homesteading.Filled to the brim with tons of advice, both small and large, regarding everything someone willing to strike it out on his or her own will need. I found the Tips and Tricks chapter to be particularly useful, and the Home Remedies chapter is worth the download price alone. If you are looking to learn more about homesteading, this is a great place to start.

Anointed to Sing the Gospel......A Message to 21st Century Levites By Kathryn Kemp Thomas Dorsey gave a message of hope and encouragement to African Americans who were struggling to survive after World War 1 and the Great Depression. The gospel artists of the 21st century, must take up the Levitical mantle. The preached and sung gospel leads to Christ and salvation. A prophetic message is needed in this day as it was in the days of Israel and Judah. "Write the vision, make it plain" through the preached word and the sung word. A must read for Christian educators, music ministers, choir presidents, and all modern-day Levites.
