Do you enjoy the creepy atmosphere and gloom they project, drawing you into a darker realm of suspense? Then Perry Lake’s the Nightmare of Frankenstein is for you.Let me say first: this isn’t my kind of book. I’m typically a fan of bold action and seething horror. But I am still a fan of the old black and whites. I recall many times as a kid staying up late to catch the tales of Dracula, the Mummy, and my favorite the Wolfman. These pictures were some of the bedrock of suspense and horror for decades. And Perry Lake’s Frankenstein pays homage to them in tone and style. The book, broken in to two tales begins with the journey of Victor Frankenstein, from his youth up to the point of his greatest creation and undoing. Told in the third person, we follow the lad as he devours knowledge in his quest to create life from the lifeless. The author wraps chunks of history (both literal and speculative) into this tale, giving Victor the tools he required to leap from man to God. I enjoyed how the author borrowed pieces of history, blending the works of scientists of notoriety and infamy (such as Thomas Aquinas and Albertus Magnus, both holy men and scholars) as well as tapping into the enigmatic Illuminati to craft the framework of Victor’s quest. He travels across Europe and beyond in search of the tools necessary to meet his endgame. Though at times it felt a little dry emotionally. Most of the time his thirst for knowledge is all that drives him through the storyThe first act ends with Victor’s creation taking life, then springs forward into the mind of the Monster. Now told in the first person, the Monster travels throughout Europe and beyond, searching for the knowledge to continue were his creator left off and make himself a mate as he was promised. Again, the book weaves in more speculative/ literal history as the Monster meats alchemists, scientist, and doctors that marvel and fear him. We also get a taste of other classic monsters such as a wolfman, some ghouls, and Dracula himself. And if I’m not mistaken, an aspect of Cthulhu makes an appearance. The author even skirts in close to the queen herself, Mary Shelley, as her recounting of Frankenstein’s tale is perceived by the general public as a fictional tale. Later he meets Dr. Robert Knox, a Scottish anatomist whose lines are written in an ancient tongue that made reading it a little slow but enjoyable nonetheless.I enjoyed the half-century exploits of the Monster but felt a bit let down as he fought through many miss steps in his quest for a mate. The poor (and I use that loosely) creature remains utterly alone the entire time. The brute touched many lives, some of which violently, and made quite the impression in his journeys. The story ends with the Monster narrowly fleeing a band of collectors that planned on displaying him for other’s amusement, but the author offers a glimpse into the continuing tale of the Monster. This I look forward to reading!Perry Lake offers a rich, well-researched look into one of the classic tales and one I would suggest other fans of the classics to read.

This isn't Your Grandma's Frankenstein Monster By tpvissage Another version of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s famous tale, this one told from both the creator and the creation’s points of view with the Creature’s being the more lengthy and interesting one. From the title, we might ask, “Whose nightmare?” Do we refer to the Creature as “Frankenstein” as millions have misnamed him? Did he take his creator’s name? Who is he in the title…Frankenstein? Or is he “the Nightmare?”Frankenstein the man is present, of course, in the first section of the book, following him from boyhood, and his interest in science and alchemy in particular. While showing his life as set forth in the original, it reveals more background about his studies and attempts to meet various alchemists, some of whose lives are recounted in more detail in the Dracula series by this author. As in the original novel, his story ends with his death in the Arctic, and it is here that the Creature picks up the tale with a first person account. This is Perry Lake’s version, without a doubt, and though it relates to Mary Shelley’s original in some respects, it widely diverges in others. This creation is truly a monster. Like his counterpart, he’s articulate and knowledgeable in his self-education. No awkward, semi-dumb brute here, accepting a daisy from a little girl or trying to capture sunlight in his fingers, this is a man-thing capable of intricate reasoning, but also of great violence and a hatred of the world which has rejected him. Where the original creature merely wished to co-exist with Man, this one wants that also, but on his own terms…and more. He’s extremely resourceful. In spite of his size, he rides horses. He uses weapons other than his hands. He’s wily and cunning, violent and deceitful. He will kill without blinking an eye…man, woman, or child. He abducts people, promises to release them when they do his bidding, then kills them when their usefulness is over. IN a word, he rejects the world as the world rejects him. This Creature is truly one of vengeance, not only of his Maker but all of Mankind, one from whom the villagers will definitely shriek and flee in terror at mere mention of his name. Some of the events recounted in the Dracula series involving the Creature are also more detailed here.My main complaint, besides a few grammatical errors here and there, would be the fact that some areas are glossed. The Creature visits Dracula at his castle:“…After some initial misunderstanding, I realized that the vampire king and I had much in common…”No explanation of what that “misunderstanding” was…inquiring readers are certain to wonder. His arrival ends one chapter (or story, since this novel, like that other series, is in short story form. At the beginning of the next story, he leaves:“…I left behind me left the smoldering ruins of the Castelui de Vlad Tepes…”No detail of how the castle came to be in “smoldering ruins,” just that one sentence. This occurs in a couple of other places, also. Is the inference being, that part of the tale is told in Dracula’s own story so why repeat it here? Indeed, nothing of what went on between the vampire king and Frankenstein’s creation is revealed, and this brief mention seems to negate the ending in the other series where Dracula is pursued by van Helsing and his companions...unless that is the way the castle came to be in “smoldering ruins”?I was also disappointed that the ending of the Dracula series which seemed to point to a very unique and original approach to the Frankenstein one, wasn’t followed up. I had looked forward to this series simply on the strength of that ending, and it isn’t evident…yet. In all events, this is an intriguing novel with, if not a new slant on the story (there is at least one other series about the Creature), at least an interesting one. This is a novel which should satisfy that reader liking violence and vengeance in his novels. The next installment is awaited with anticipation. This novel is owned by the reviewer and no remuneration was involved in the writing of this review.

Very-Well researched Work By Sandy Having enjoyed Perry Lake's Brides of Draculae, I was looking forward to his next book, The Nightmare of Frankenstein. The story was narrated in two parts - first, the third person narrative chronicling the early life of Victor Frankenstein, the monster creator; then the second part, a first person narrative by the monster, Frankenstein himself. Lake again, uses his expertise in Victorian voices to weave an authentic Gothic horror story. It is clear that he always researches his stories extensively and as I’ve noticed in his works, he tends to allow the research to overwhelm his fiction, affecting pace and structure.I found the first part more like an academic treatise than a work of light fiction. It was bogged down with so much information and technical jargon/language that one was tempted to just skip the pages and seek the real story. Take for example the following extract - “Due to his discussions with Dr. Gall, Victor knew that divergent parts of the brain served sundry purposes. He therefore chose to fashion a brain from the Perseverance, Comparative, and Calculative skills of a merchant, the Conscientiousness and Concentration of a burgermeister, the Firmness and Observational skills of a constable. Both the Music center and the Benevolence center, which in cranioscopy is the closest kin to a soul or spirit, and which designates the appreciation of beauty, came from a young singer…” Notwithstanding, at least, I got to learn about the expression, “Excarnation”, which is the process of cutting all flesh from the body to allow the bones to fit into a small container…gruesome!! The story got a bit better when told from the monster's perspective. I enjoyed in particular the monster’s encounter with Count Dracula and Professor Waldeman. Also the gruesome cemetery night raid for corpses was skilfully written. It was great to come across scenes I had previously read about in Brides of Dracula, such as Dr Frankeinstein’s meeting with the vampire Countess Dolingen and the Monster fight club. However, just as in the first part of the book, the second part was still weighted with so many details that made the story drag for me at times. Proofreading errors in several places and gaps at the start of each sentence also interfered with my enjoyment of the story – “his tied (tired) old eyes..”, “He entered the accursed castle in which none of his family had sat (set) foot..”, “Victor realized the problem lie (lay) in the size of the crystal”, “Victor never did finished (finish) reading the black book.” These are just a few of a range of errors that I found somewhat distracting while reading the book.In conclusion, in The Nightmare of Frankenstein, Perry Lake has written a well-researched book which students interested in the subject would find invaluable. However, as a work of light horror fiction, it failed to hold my attention in its entirety.

What other readers are saying about this series:

“An excellent read. I particularly love how genuine historical figures are brought to life, how their characters exist in a realm of half fiction and semi truth, all whisked along in a rollercoaster of a narrative. The scope and depth of this novel is vastly increased. I’m very much looking forward to the next instalment, as it promises an explosion of action and intrigue.” “This was great. It took the first book and totally opened up the scope. The finale was epic. Looking forward to more!” “An enchanting read for adults and children.” “in this second one the scale and difficulty of facing their opponents expands with thrilling results. I could hardly believe as I came close to the end of the book how well the author retained a convincing degree of youthful innocence with the characters' growing ability to face varied and sinister challenges. The reader is never patronised - the youngsters are charmingly distinct from one another, while the schemes of the adults are believable yet mysterious. The suspense and the sense of the 'elementalists' crucial role in the concurrent stories - their own and that of a far broader conflict - is masterfully woven into an enthralling and vivid tale. I can't wait to find out what comes next!”

I'm not very musically talented, but Shepherd's Song made me want to write songs and play the piano. I sometimes had a hard time keeping up with whose perspective I was in because it went back and forth quite often, but overall the book kept me engaged and wanting to find out how Gail and Brad could overcome the obstacles keeping them apart.I received this book from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The author presented the story at a comfortable pace. The characters feel very real and down to earth. I had to make myself put the book down to get some sleep at night. I'd like to read more stories of this quality.

Bears and Eagles, by RP Wollbaum

About the Author RP is the eldest son of the eldest son and being born in 1905, his grandfather liked to boast he was the first person in his family to be born in his home province in Canada. At a young age, RP's father moved the family to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains from the Great Plains growing up in Calgary Alberta. Coming from a deeply religious family, RP attended Catholic schools, where he was exposed to many kids who had come from most of the countries in Europe after the second world war. In high school, RP played on a highly rated football squad. In his senior year, being the fastest kid on the team, he was asked to play as a receiver, but declined. He liked being the hitter, not the hittee. Besides, other things became more important. Fast cars and Marg. RP says he was not even cool enough to be on the Geek Squad in school, but that it never bothered him. During the time of penny loafers, tight jeans and alpaca sweaters, RP came to school in T shirts, boot cut jeans and cowboy boots. Visits with family 'Back Home' in Saskatchewan were special times. RP's maternal grandfather bred and sold Morgan horses and RP was riding almost before he could walk. His mother tells him he was bucked off his first horse when he was two. He spent a lot of time listening to the elders talking about the old days, on really special occasions, hearing from even older family talking about life in the 'Old Country'. Which it turns out was a part of Russia that we now call Ukraine. Many of these conversations were held in German. If you ask RP just the right way, he will admit he can speak three languages. English, French and German. None of them well. He is currently valiantly trying to teach himself Russian. Like the characters in his book, RP knew girls existed, but football, cars and hanging out at the pool hall with his buddies was more important. That all changed at a Sadie Hawkins dance when a cute little blond bombshell asked him to dance and his life changed forever. RP and Marg were married in August of 1973. She was 18 and he turned 19 two weeks later. At the age of 21, he became a father for the first time and eighteen months later another boy arrived. RP lives on a small acreage just east of Didsbury Alberta Canada. These days instead of sleeping under the stars rolled up in a tarp with his trusty steed Barney beside him, he can be found touring the country in the 'Buss'.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent historical fiction By TFLReader I really enjoy historical fiction when it is done right. This isn't an easy genre to write as it takes a great deal of research to get facts straight, stick to proper timelines, and put the right people in the right places. Add to this the ability to create an enticing fictional tale in the midst of a historically accurate setting, and it's a challenge. There are a handful of writers that can do this effectively and I have to say that I really enjoyed author RP Wolbaum's contribution to the mix with "Bears and Eagles".A story set in late 19th century Europe and one that gives a wonderful inside look at the Cossacks, among other things. "Bears and Eagles" is the story of Andreas, who has long dreamt of being a Cossack and is at last invited to join the regiment. As the regiment becomes involved in conflicts, Andreas' leadership skills are tested and the most interesting aspects of the story were how the conflicts amongst the allies were handled. It seemed that there were just as many intense skirmishes within the allied camp as on the battlefield. There is an awesome amount of intrigue in this story as the stakes are raised at various crossroads and loyalties are tested. Andreas also meets his love, Elizabeth, on the course of this journey. This was a very well-written and fascinating story that gave me a look into another time. The characters were all well developed and I'd be very interested in reading future works from this author.

Country against country and the battles are raw, graphic and accurately portrayed. Andreas is a strong and fearless character that compels the reader to keep turning pages. His courage and loyalty seem endless and his intelligence keeps many alive. Facing one conflict after the next, he never waivers, leading his troops to victory. The other characters are rich in personality and make the story intense. Family values are mainstay and trust becomes a test of judgments. The twists and turns bring mystery and the unexpected events left me breathless. I love books that keep you guessing and this one certainly did. And the romance included simply made it a complete and utterly delight to red. The attention to detailing is awe inspiring and so clear. I could hear the shots, feel the adrenalin, smell the carnage and taste the dirt. It is one of the most descriptive books I have read. It is a fairly long book, but it is gripping and before you know it, you have reached the end. Extremely well written and easy to read and stay with. It has an impeccable flow and was a wonderful and engaging read. The imagination of the author is one of the best I encountered and I can not wait to see more. The passion for writing is amazing and made this one of the best additions to my library. I recommend it to all, it is outstanding

A very awesome book cover By Tony Parsons The Cossacks: Captain Vacilly Ivanovitch (Beresan Free Riders, 3rd Imperial Army), Sergeant Andreas Bekenbaum (25), Andy, Johann Bekenbaum (brother), Kurt, & Karl, were wreaking havoc on the Turkish soldiers. There were also the Russian prisoners to deal with.Major Halinov wanted to meet with Sergeant Peter Chimalovich (USMC).Effective immediately a huge promotion Major Andreas Bekenbaum (Earl of Katherintal) & temporarily assigned to the Royal Horse Guards.1st meeting with Marshal Molotov.2nd meeting was with General Andropov about his obligation to the military, politics, religion, & his honor to Crown Prince Nicolas, & country.Major Olynick (US Army 1st Cavalry), Major Rostov (US Army 1st Cavalry), Major Asmanov of the (USMC), & Mr. Remington (New York Times) had come to watch Major Andreas Hanrayovitch Bekenbaum, Ataman Andreashost, Earl of Katherintal District) Cossacks train, drill & perform.Major Rudy von Hoaedle (King’s German Legion, Cavalry Regiment) was also observing.Baroness Elizabeth Liz Halenczuk (Gräfin) & Colonel Ataman Andreas Andy Bekenbaum (son of Heinrich & of Michael, & clan of Bekenbaum, Graf) later wed.Training began, out of 3,000, 1,500 were left. The Afghanistan & Iraq war had begun/ended with 1,000 of casualties, wounded & injured.Remington (artist) had lots of drawings as did the newspapers of the military force of both the Bears & Eagles. The awards ceremony commenced.Everyone commissioned or noncommissioned in the Bears or Eagles units received some sort of distinguish accommodation medal. What is the future of all the prominent families?I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written Russian family generational true-false historical War movie book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were a few grammar/typo errors (rank), but no repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a large set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another fantastic Russian War movie, or mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.Thank you for the free Goodreads; Author; PDF bookTony Parsons MSW (Washburn)

"Mattie's Heart" is Book 1 in the "Morgan Family Saga" series. As a newlywed, Mattie Welch Morgan had specific ideas about what her married life would be like. None of those included going to Montana with her husband to start a cattle ranch. But after Brady Morgan decided they are going west to homestead a claim, Mattie has to change her notions about her future. Then tragedy strikes the Morgan family and Mattie is left struggling with her faith and wondering if her life is all a mistake. What will Mattie choose to do with her heart, and will she ever know peace and happiness again? "Mattie's Heart" takes place in the years spanning 1915-1919, and shares the story of one young couple with a pioneer spirit--their trials, turmoil, and sorrows as they strive to find God's will for their lives. Those who have read the "True Cover" series by Ruth Kyser will recognize Brady & Mattie Morgan as the great-grandparents of FBI Agent, Samuel Clemens Morgan.

Mattie’s Heart (The Morgan Family Saga Book 1) By Readers Corner I’m not usually one for this type of story, but I couldn’t wait to read this story of the Patriarch and Matriarch of the Morgan Family. The founders of the Blue Creek Ranch. I am a huge fan of the True Cover series and I really wanted to see how it all started. Mattie and Brady endured a lot of hardship and loss, but didn’t lose their faith. They realized that God was their Provider, Sustainer, Comforter, and their absolute everything. If you have read the True Cover series, you will see where Sam gets his awesome qualities.

Having read all the "True Cover" books this was exciting to see where it all began. Even if you haven't read the "True Cover" series this would be a good one to start with.I like the way the author told of the times of hardship they experienced. Not only living out west, but hardships with marriage , grief and personal life. These apply even today in our lives. I would highly recommend this book. Can't wait for "Clara"s Heart" so I can read it too.

The Complete Pug Handbook is an absolute must for anyone getting a Pug puppy, adult or rescue dog.

New Pug owners have so many questions. Imagine if you could call on a couple of dozen Pug experts to provide the answers… Well now you can! Canine author Linda Whitwam has teamed up with experienced Pug breeders and professionals on both sides of the Atlantic to produce the most insightful and informative book on Pugs yet.

The 272 pages are packed full of information and insider tips on everything you'll ever need to know about caring for and living with one of these unique and highly affectionate dogs (or more if you get the Pug bug). Find out what Pug breeders have to say on a host of subjects, such as what NOT to do when you bring your pup home, typical Pug traits, what Pugs love…and hate (like going out in the rain!) and advice on how to care for an aging Pug.

The Complete Pug Handbook covers looking after a Pug from the litter to old age. For anyone who hasn’t chosen their Pug yet, there’s:

How to Find a Good Breeder, The Questions to Ask, Where NOT to Buy a Pug From, Picking a Healthy Puppy or Adult Dog, The Temperament of The Pug, How to Pick a Puppy With the Right Temperament For You, Pug Proofing Your Home and Rescue Pugs.

Once you bring your Pug home, the book guides you through the first days and weeks, covering Housetraining, Crate Training, Obedience Training, Understanding Your Dog’s Personality and Socialising your Dog. There are over 20 pages on Feeding a Pug with all the options explained, including Feeding Puppies, Feeding Charts, Calorie Counters, How to Read Dog Food Labels and Feeding Senior Dogs. There’s even a chapter on Showing Pugs written by a leading breeder and Championship Show judge.

Pug Health, Skin and Allergies are covered in depth with tried and tested medical and holistic treatments. This book could save you a fortune in vets’ bills - not only by helping you to choose a healthy dog, but you’ll also learn about Keeping your Pug Healthy, the Puggy Facts of Life, Spaying, Neutering, Vaccinations, Worming, De-Fleaing and Grooming.

The Pug, like a lot of brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds, is a unique breed requiring a little extra care from their humans. This book will arm you with all the specialist knowledge you’ll ever need for the challenge of owning one of these highly rewarding and very lovable dogs.

Reviews for The Complete Pug Handbook:

“An EXCELLENT BOOK, well written and informative, an absolute must-have for new and would-be Pug parents, a guaranteed point of reference you will return to time after time, easy to understand, very breed specific, unlike lots of other books which seem generic, this has been written by someone who knows the breed. If you are thinking of getting a Pug you need this book, 10/10,” D. BEECHAM, of FIZZLEWICK PUGS, SOUTH WALES, UK

“This is a very well-rounded book with input from breeders from the UK and throughout the US. It covers every topic from A to Z on pugs! A MUST-have for any pug enthusiast/fancier. I also recommend it to breeders as an outstanding reference when placing a puppy…especially to a first-time pug owner,” L. LIBNER, MICHIGAN, USA

“Absolutely brilliant book! Highly recommended reading for all new Pug owners, this book has breed specific information on every topic, unlike a lot of handbooks which have generalised dog information with only a small section on the actual breed. An insightful and thoughtfully constructed read, with excellent advice from a variety of sources with experience of this delightful breed,” S. EVANS, CARMARTHENSHIRE, WALES

“Very thorough! Rather than just one opinion, one way, it includes the thoughts and recommendations from multiple breeders on many subjects. It is a must-have for all Pug owners, new and old,” L. WRIGHT, MICHIGAN The Complete Pug Handbook: The Essential Guide For New & Prospective Pug Owners (Canine Handbooks), by Linda Whitwam

Deliverance will come... But that is another story. What makes a legend but the stories told about him? Interviewing Gorias La Gaul, the biggest legend of them all, is a dream come true for young scribe Jessica. Where other girls her age would swoon beneath the steely gaze of the warrior, Jessica only has eyes for his mouth, and the tales that come from it...when he takes a break from cursing or drinking. Unfortunately for Jessica, Gorias doesn't really have time to babysit. She's found him in the midst of an annual pilgrimage of sorts, and though he agrees to let her come along, it's not without a warning: You may not like what you see and hear. Just don't come crying afterward. Whether viewing past visions with magical gemstones or jumping into the fray alongside the barbarian, Jessica's about to get firsthand accounts she won't soon forget...and discover legends are far from reality, and just as far from being pretty. You wouldn't expect a youth of love and friendship from the greatest killer to walk the Earth, would you? These are tales of some of Gorias' earliest days, back before he'd found his swords, to a time when a dragon needed killing. Tales back before his heart had hardened. Maybe. For most men, the future is not certain and the past is prologue. For a legend like Gorias La Gaul, even the past is up for debate. One thing is for certain about these tales. They will be bloody. Such is always the way for a man... Born of Swords...

By ~~ Mari Born of Swords, Stephen ShrewsburyPaperback: 324 pagesPublisher: Seventh Star Press, LLC (June 8, 2015)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 1941706851ISBN-13: 978-1941706855Paper: $14.34, 324pp, trade paperbackKindle: $3.99Interviewing the biggest legend of them all, Gorias La Gaul, is a dream come true for Jessica, and she’s traveled quite a distance and lost several escorts along the way to meet Gorias in Segesta. The city is a stop along a route Gorias takes each year on a regular schedule. She’s an undergraduate scribe from Nineveh School, sent by Dr. Allard, a former instructor of Gorias’, in order to collect information for “a true transcript from [Gorias]” as “a valuable testament or an exciting chronicle for future generations” for posterity.Gorias warns Jessica that his life and travels aren’t “a fantasy adventure, sweetheart” and goes on to tell her, “it’s horror, pure and simple.” To this she gives the simple reply, “I understand, Lord La Gaul,” truly not understanding what she’s gotten herself into. The tales she collects are from of Gorias’ earliest days, back before he’d found his swords, to a time when a dragon needed killing. Tales back before his heart had hardened. Maybe. For a legend like Gorias La Gaul, even the past is up for debate. Along the way, they happen upon side adventures. Through these, and through the memories of Gorias she collects via stones called Eyes of the Dragon, she learns who Gorias really is. However, this doesn’t prepare her for the cold truth of his yearly, 600 mile pilgrimage.Gorias La Gaul lives in three novels and in one collection – and this one isn’t to be missed. Through this adventure, through the little information he tells Jessica and through the Eyes of the Dragon stone, the reader learns more about the legend than we’ve known before. The reader is taken down into the gritty, ugly meat of what created the man who became the legend. For those readers who enjoy their fantasy infused with swords and madmen and a bit of sorcery, Born of Swords delivers these and more. While I enjoyed this adventure very much, the narrative could have taken some extra editing. Most of the errors weren’t that jarring (misspellings, punctuation), but they were jarring enough to pull me from the story at times.Steven L. Shrewsbury lives, works and writes in rural Central Illinois. Over 365 of his short stories have been published in print or digital media since the late 80s. His novels include Within, Philistine, Overkill, Hell Billy, Blood & Steel, Thrall, Stronger Than Death, Hawg, Tormentor and Godforsaken. Shrewsbury maintains a blog at https://sshrewsbury.wordpress.com and can be found on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/authorstevenshrewsbury.I give Born of Swords three out of five coffee cups.

Shrewsbury (DJ Weaver, reviewer) By CK Webb BORN OF SWORDS… what more can be said except Steven Shrewsbury has hit the mark again with his newest tale of Gorias La Gaul. This time out, La Gaul has a sidekick of sorts… enter scribe Jessica, who has heard the tales and travels to find Gorias to hear his stories first hand. What she finds, is a man, bigger than life, who takes on all comers, human or beast, with little thought for his own life and limb, but always with a tiny bit of ulterior motive.La Gaul and Jessica travel together, pitting themselves against some of the nastiest men and most terrifying monsters imaginable, leading the reader on an adventure not soon to be forgotten. Shrewsbury’s characters are always crisp and refreshing and his descriptions of lands and kingdoms are glistening and spectacular. If you have read other ‘La Gaul’ novels by Shrewsbury, you’ll definitely want to ride down this trail again. If you’ve never read a ‘La Gaul’ story, I can guarantee you will be scurrying to find more of his tales once you have devoured this one.Monsters, madmen, danger, sword-play, and just the right amount of humor, make BORN OF SWORDS, the sword and sorcery, fantasy adventure you always wanted to read. Shrewsbury has done it again and BORN OF SWORDS is a hit NOT to be missed.DJ Weaverfor WebbWeaver Reviews

Gorias La Gaul is a character you hate to love but can't help loving, and this is the book to get to know him. There's a new adventure in every chapter, and it was fascinating to see Gorias' history through real-time flashback. I usually despise flashback, but Shrewsbury is genius in his vehicle of implementation. This is a page-turner the entire way. If you love sword and sorcery, you'll devour this book.

The trials of Dr. Daniel Waterhouse and the Natural Philosophers increase one hundredfold in an England plagued by the impending war and royal insecurities, as the beautiful and ambitious Eliza plays a most dangerous game as double agent and confidante of enemy kings.

The Baroque Cycle, Neal Stephenson’s award-winning series, spans the late 17th and early 18th centuries, combining history, adventure, science, invention, piracy, and alchemy into one sweeping tale. It is a gloriously rich, entertaining, and endlessly inventive historical epic populated by the likes of Isaac Newton, William of Orange, Benjamin Franklin, and King Louis XIV, along with some of the most inventive literary characters in modern fiction.

This novel, as well as the complete and unabridged presentation of The Baroque Cycle, was produced in cooperation with Neal Stephenson. Each volume includes an exclusive introduction read by the author.

355 of 358 people found the following review helpful. Warning: NOT a complete or new version of a book! By Stephenson Fan Or even whole book! OK, right off the bat, I'd like to say that I am a huge Stephenson Fan. Guess I'm not enough of a fan to remember that the original series had sub-books within the published hardcovers. I saw this book and tried to figure out if it was new or not, since it had a new title and all. Since it says on the cover, "The Baroque Cycle Number Three", I thought it might be the retitled, paperback version of the third hard cover (Which I admittedly was too cheap to buy and waiting for paperback.) The book is actually a reprint of the last third of "Quicksilver!" There is NOTHING on the cover to indicate this; it is sold and marketed as whole book. I might add that the paperback version of "Quicksilver" is actually only the first third of the hardcover. Again, nothing to indicate that buyers aren't getting the whole book. Paperbacks are usually a way for readers to enjoy a book that they didn't want pay for in hardcover. By breaking the original hardcovers into multiple paperbacks, Stephenson's publishers have figured out a way to charge MORE for the series. I hope this isn't a trend in publishing. We'll see how long THIS review stays up!

The Bible I pre-ordered was poorly bound, unattached to the outer binding at the spine. So I sent it back for a replacement. The replacement was worse, again with the pages not attached to the outer binding at the spine but only to what looks like a backing to which they are glued. In addition, 1/4" of the first pages were not attached to even that binding--just glued to the inner cover. I haven't gotten past the poor quality binding to really study the Bible itself. This is only a review of the quality of the physical book, which seems to be so poor that studying the Bible would make it fall apart.

It has a great translation (NLT), illustrations, and notes that make passages clearer (a picture can be worth a thousand words). One of my favorite bibles (and I own a lot). Worth it if you're someone who loves the NLT, pictures, and study helps in the bible.

‘He did not stop to observe his kills, nor to wipe blood off his face. I am a King, he reminded himself. I must be the best among my men, the most fearsome warrior that Solar blood can produce.’ More than a thousand years before Rama, civilization lay fragmented by wars between Aryas and their enemies. From a tribe at the frontlines of this battle, rose the boy king Ikshvaku, the first Manava, founder of the first kingdom in the Indian subcontinent. This is a story of the first King of our lands – the founder of Suryavansha – of betrayal and loyalty, of dynasties and destruction. A perfect beginning to The Scrolls of Aryavarta. Who founded the ancient cities such as Prayaga and Kashi? Who established Ayodhya, and when? What were the various Arya tribes that populated ancient India? The Scrolls of Aryavarta seeks to answer these and many other questions, and The Seal of Surya is one story in this universe. ‘A rocking read. True blast from the ancient past.’- Krishna Udayasankar

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable read. By Amazon Customer I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this book from the description, but I did. With no reviews to sway me I decided to give it a try. I am glad that I did. The book kept me interested to the very end. I didn't want to put it down, because I wanted to see what would happen next. When I wasn't reading it I was thinking about it, and found myself picking it up again for that one more chapter before bed.Thank you, Helen McCabe, for writing this book. It was very entertaining.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Eh, its ok. By Carla Wallace Overall I felt that the writing was a little juvenile, as well as the love story. It was a lot of 'I hate you, I hate you, I hate'...then all of a sudden, for no reason at all, I'm madly in love with you. I'm perfectly fine with that change as long as there is some base for that change in feelings. There really wasn't here. Overall, not a bad read, not sure I'd take the time to read it again, but I wouldn't say that it was a complete waste of time.

An Excellent Victorian Romance By Minskip It must have been difficult in the Victorian era for someone with both youth and beauty to also be feisty, but Helen McCabe's heroine is no milksop miss. Determined to follow her instincts and heart, Lydia is a match for all that life throws at her. A most enjoyable Victorian romance, well written and plotted. Recommended.

LOVE AND ITS ENEMIES is set in Spain during the Spanish Civil War, between the months shortly after the war’s outbreak in July 1936 and the fall of Barcelona in January 1939. Kate O’Donnell, a young Irish nurse from a conservative rural background, is devastated when she finds out that her boyfriend, Joey Maguire, has left abruptly for Madrid to fight in the civil war on the republican side. In an effort to be reunited with him, Kate volunteers her services to the Spanish Medical Aid Committee; however, on arriving in Spain she finds herself assigned not to a Madrid hospital as expected, but to a village backwater hundreds of miles from the capital. The story follows Kate’s attempts to surmount the difficulties of meeting Joey in war-ravaged Spain, and her deepening relationships with the members of her medical team, including two sympathetic English nurses, an authoritarian Australian matron and a committed Spanish surgeon. The increasing intensity of the war demands that Kate’s team relocates to field hospitals close to some of the war’s bloodiest encounters, putting almost unbearable strains on the team, and bringing Kate into conflict with some of her colleagues but closer to others. Ultimately, the novel narrates the physical and psychological journey of a young woman who, through the vicissitudes and brutality of war, is brought to confront the cultural and societal pressures that have shaped her, and see the world in other ways.
