Riddled with cannonball holes from their stunning defeat by the English Navy after trying to invade Queen Elizabeth's Protestant realm in 1588 to restore Catholicism, the Spanish Armada sailed north around the Orkneys and Hebrides in their attempt to return home. The worst storms in fifty years, however, drove 24 Spanish ships relentlessly onto the rocky Irish coast, tearing them apart.

Thousands of sailors and soldiers drowned; hundreds of unarmed Spaniards were slaughtered on the beaches. Those who fled across Ireland to reach Scotland faced daily peril for months.

The story of those few who didn't die was told only once, by Captain Francisco de Cuellar. This true saga of survival against all odds, based upon Cuellar's manuscript which lay hidden for 300 years, is vividly described in remarkable detail by historical novelists Paul Altrocchi and Julia Cooley Altrocchi, placing Captain Cuellar among the great heroes and legendary wanderers of history alongside Jason, seeker of the Golden Fleece; Sigurd, ancient Norse hero; and Homer's Odysseus.

"Fraught With Hazard describes one of history's most dramatic and least-known tales-the fate of Spanish Armada survivors in Ireland after the English navy and stormy weather caused many of their warships to wreck on the treacherous Irish coast.

"Based on the sole witness-account of Captain Francisco de Cuellar, who endured seemingly endless death-defying crises before making it back to Spain, this enthralling epic is grippingly told by Paul and Julia Altrocchi. They breathe dazzling new life into a memorable 400 year-old saga of Homeric proportions."

- Hank Whittemore, author of the compelling non-fiction books So That Others May Live and The Monument.

"It is hard to believe that the perilous adventures of Francisco de Cuellar are true but they are, and the Altrocchis' breathtaking account of his daredevil escapades on the high-seas and on hostile shores is more vivid than the best that Hollywood has ever been able to offer. This is historical writing at its brightest, liveliest and very best."

- English writer Alexander Waugh, author of the best-selling The House of Wittgenstein: A Family at War, and Fathers and Sons: The Autobiography of a Family.

By Hank Whittemore Fraught with Hazard by Paul Altrocchi and his late mother Julia Cooley Altrocchi is a wonderful novel based on the true personal account of Francisco Cuellar of the Spanish Armada, who managed to survive after the English victory in 1588 and his ship rounded Scotland only to be wrecked on the rocky coast of Ireland. Following his many escapes from deadly peril, Captain Cuellar found his way to the Low Countries and, from his lodgings at Antwerp, wrote down the details of his adventures in a letter to Philip II of Spain – an amazing document that was discovered in Madrid in 1885, where it was published in Spanish. An English translation followed in 1897, fully describing the tragedy of the Armada through Cuellar’s eyes. In 1962 Ms. Altrocchi completed the unpublished manuscript of her novelization (which her son inherited), and now, more than fifty years later, Paul has completed the sage in 255 pages that you won’t want to stop reading until finished. The basic story and incidents of Fraught with Hazard remain true to the original chronicle that Cuellar set down in 1589. The captain, Altrocchi writes, “through his bravery, resilience and ultimate deliverance deserves to take his place among the dragon-slayers and magnificent wanderers of history.”I’ll read this book all over again, but, please, Hollywood, make the movie!

The scenes of fighting, conflict, escape, were well written. But outside of those scenes, the authors do not write fiction well. A simple example: when a novelist or dramatist wants to impart background, they have a variety of mechanisms (e.g., to have two characters converse and insert the information into their dialogue, as for instance Shakespeare does at the start of Hamlet, with two guards and then Horatio discussing the ghost's habit of walking about at night). Here, the first chapter takes the clumsiest approach I have ever seen, which is to introduce the main character, captaining his ship in the middle of the first engagement with the English, and then say "He knew that ..." and then insert the half-dozen facts the authors want the reader to know about how the conflict came about, what the King's orders were, what the English navy's capabilities are, etc. in rapid-fire succession. Imagine Hamlet opening with a Hamlet soliloquy to the effect that he knows there is a ghost walking about, that the ghost is his father, etc. Also, most of the scenes and dialogues between the main character and various women seems to have emerged from a bad romance / soft porn novel which has to have been completely made up by the authors.
