From Publisher's Weekly: Set in 1967 East Texas, this novel mixes a soupçon of the supernatural in with the mundane. Twenty-year old Paul Henry, just released from the Army physically healed from wounds he suffered in Vietnam, but still suffering from deep psychic wounds and a radically changed outlook.
Estranged from family and friends and not knowing what he's going to do with the rest of his life, decides to visit the grave of his father, a man he never knew who supposedly committed suicide on the day his son was born. Paul's impulsive decision to find out more about his father sets him on a journey among strangers in a strange land, where he will find happiness and horror, love, hate, the power of determined effort, and the force of capricious fate.
The author does an excellent job of keeping you enthralled, making you hope all will be well, yet causing you to fear that all will come crashing down. Like a skilled poker player, this story keeps its cards close to its vest until all the bets are in. The hand is called, and boom, the cards are laid on the table for all to see. After the emotions stirred up by the showdown abate, one thought is left. Wow! Deal another hand!

Wonderful story, Terrific author By judy moseley Badly wounded & betrayed by his girlfriend Linda and best friend Allen,Paul Henry returns from the war to his hometown in Texas to find everyone & everything the same. But it all has a different flavor for him now.No longer the carefree youth he was when he left,he embarks on a jouney to his fathers birthplace in Clayhill,Texas to find the truth of his dads death the day he was born.Upon arriving there, the author draws you right into the deceptivly sleepy small Southern town and introduces you to characters and places anyone from a small town will recognise.Old men playing checkers under the shade tree in the town square, not missing any detail of things going on and happily passing on the gossip. The combination pharmacy and soda fountain, where everyone is a regular and strangers are politly pumped for information. There Paul finds there are two sets of Henrys in town. The rich ones and his fathers family.Trying to find the details of his fathers death,Paul is drawn into a world of secrets and lies.As I greedily read the book,I was certain at points I knew where the author was going with the story, only to be twisted and turned down surprizing paths. Mr. Huffmans way with words and descriptive prose pulls you right into that world, where you can smell the jasmine and taste the dust off the dirt roads.Highly enjoyable,I laughed until my sides hurt, shed tears in places and wanted to shout out loud in others.I first got a taste of this book when I read an exerpt in the Amazon writers contest. I am so happy I got to read the entire workand find out it's dark secrets.John Huffman is a writer to watch. I look forward to reading more of his work.

Cottrell If ever there was a book made for a movie, this was it.I only read THE BARON OF CLAYHILL as a courtesy, because I had "met" its author on GoodReads, but it really grabbed me right from the beginning and wouldn't let go (Author John Huffman owes me a couple of hours of sleep that I missed while finishing the book one night). The story is compelling and fast-moving, the characters are well-developed and the plot was deliciously complex. I can't tell much about it without spoiling the story, but suffice it to say that there was psychological drama, heart-bending love, tantalizing sex, and bad guys you'll love to hate. The author did a particularly good job of conveying the challenges faced by young Vietnam vets who returned and tried to adapt to a social life with people their age who had no clue about what they had faced. He also made the reader feel the intense frustration of bumping up against corrupt authorities that control with violence and intimidation.

As I read The Baron of Clayhill on my vacation, I was thoroughly entertained and felt as though I was a part of the story. The characters are real as we've all known the scenarios of: boy loses girl to best friend and deep dark family secrets that shape the lives of many - good or bad. The author knows how to put a twist or turn in the story just when I was feeling comfortable with the way it was going. I read as quickly as possible to see which East Texas road it would take me next. I was not disappointed - perhaps there will be a sequel?
