When Andrew Ferguson travels to a remote island in the southern Atlantic to research an unusual bird, the Roseland Auk, his professor warns him that the pagan society is matriarchal and its women are completely off limits to outsiders. Despite his promise to ignore the locals and focus on discovering why the birds of the island are so predominantly male, he soon falls for a beautiful islander. Little does Andrew know, she is promised to the son of the island’s leader, and he is not happy about Andrew’s interference. Through his research, Andrew comes to understand the bird's behavior and begins to uncover the islanders’ dark secrets. When he ignores warnings to stop meddling in the island’s affairs, it becomes apparent that there’s something more mysterious - and life-threatening - on Roseland.

Perry What's an island to do when there is not enough food to feed its people is the dilemma Roseland faces in John Sheffield's latest novel. "Through a glass darkly" a scientist discovers the secret during his ornithological research on this remote island. The auks figured a way, the islanders mirror the solution. I loved the mysterious machinations as the strange culture seeks to keep out anyone who may interfere and the scientist who threatens its mores.

Patrick Rum tum ti tumpti, the people and auks of remote South Atlantic Roseland Island, lead Ph.D. candidate Andy Ferguson, on a merry dance. John Sheffield pulls the reader into Andy’s unique dilemma as Andy tries to understand the sexual customs of both bird and human where the sex ratio is skewed. Why are there so few females compared to the number of males? And how does such a population cope with so many frustrated males? What is Roseland’s Secret? Andy is warned repeatedly to study only the birds, not the humans. But his scientific curiosity wins out and he finds himself drawn into the bizarre rituals on the island which he finds are rooted in ancient pagan practices. He also finds himself in life threatening danger. Whether you are a biologist who has undergone the rigors of research, inordinately fond of bird behavior, made a regretful mistake while dating, enjoy a mystery, or enjoy romance, this book delivers an engaging read. Pick up a copy today, you will be glad you did. By the time you reach chapter five, you will want to read to the end. Sheffield is not only an outstanding physics researcher (holding a Ph.D. in physics, expert in both fusion energy and how to keep up with the energy demands of a growing human population), he delivers as a fiction writer as well. Roseland’s Secret is a truly magical tale and well worth the read. I want more Sheffield books! I will be recommending his book to my friends as well as my Animal Behavior students. Amy R. Wethington, Associate Professor in Biology and author of Project Paranormal (under the pen name L. A. Patrick).

The dialogue is excellent among the many characters, who are not always who you think they are. But it all comes out good in the end, without it being obvious how the end will finally come out. Keeping the relationships of the characters straight is helped by a family tree chart in the back. It might have been helpful to put it in the front, since I did not see it until I got to the end.
