Warrior (Freelancer Book 2), by Terry Irving Review Kirkus Review Irving's (Courier, 2015) historical thriller, the second in his Freelancer series, offers a provocative reinterpretation of the infamous Wounded Knee incident. Irving reprises the picaresque role of Rick Putnam, a motorcycle-riding courier and war-hardened Vietnam veteran. Set in 1973, the story centers on the Wounded Knee debacle in South Dakota, in which members of the American Indian Movement seized and occupied a small town within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. In this fictional version, the activists, surrounded and beleaguered by U.S. law enforcement, are increasingly threatened with the possibility of a final, deadly raid that ends the standoff once and for all. Rick joins his Native American friend Eve [Buffalo Calf] in an attempt to sneak badly needed supplies past the blockade surrounding the town. The area is crackling with violence, riddled with various tribal factions all deeply territorial, suspicious of outsiders, and accustomed to spontaneous bouts of violence. Rick, troubled by the political intrigue he encountered (and barely survived) in the previous novel, uncovers yet more subterfuge regarding the collusion of the federal government with corrupt officials within the Bureau of Indian Affairs. What follows is an action-packed adventure that incudes nefarious government forces, intramural tribal conflict, and motorcycle gangs. Rick remains the constant through the two volumes: he's still a chain-smoking, wisecracking tough guy haunted by memories of service in Vietnam....A brisk, suspenseful adventure nestled in real, historical drama
From the Author April 25, 1973. "A machine gun round tore past. Rick Putnam felt the hair on the top of his head suddenly rise up, and in the split-second before he heard the whining thwup of the bullet, he'd already begun his dive to the ground." Every night, motorcycle courier Rick Putnam battles the phantom gunfire that is the price of his service in Vietnam but this is definitely not a dream. Rick and his girlfriend, Eve Buffalo Calf, have spent the winter hiding out from the assassins who pursued them across Washington DC to cover up an act of High Treason. Now, feeling safe, they are headed back home but first, a quick stop to backpack desperately-needed food in to Eve's legal clients, the American Indian activists under fire in the small town of Wounded Knee. A fellow veteran sacrifices himself so that they can escape the bloodshed and betrayal that mark the end of this desperate act of resistance and fulfilling his final request results in a motorcycle sprint through the Black Hills with a secretive cult out to kill them at every turn. Rick learns that the cult is based in Washington DC and so, with the help of their computer hacker housemates, Eve and Rick fight back against this "new crusade"--actually a scam that brainwashes and brutalizes its young converts. In the final battle, Rick must stop the cult leaders from destroying both the sacred lands of the Native Americans and the very souls of the young children in their charge.

No need to "Worry"or about the entertainment value of this book! @badwordplay By Owen Robinson I saw that this book was released recently, and it piqued my interest. Set in the 70’s, during the conflict at Wounded Knee (a moment in history that I was not entirely familiar with before reading this), it centers around Rick Putnam, who is a motorcycle courier, and his girlfriend Eve Buffalo Calf. Both of which obviously hit the jackpot in the “Super Rad Name” competition. They stop in the small town of Wounded Knee, to help some activist friends of Eve’s, bringing them supplies and such. And since it would be a little boring of a story if things worked out perfectly, things actually don’t work out perfectly, when they find themselves being chased by a cult, who is intent on killing them.As I said, I wasn’t very familiar with the Wounded Knee incident, but I was intrigued all the same. I did a little research (see: Wikipedia) before digging too far, so I had a broad idea, and I think that it doesn’t really matter how much knowledge you have before reading this, that you will enjoy it all the same. Terry Irving does a spectacular job of painting a picture of the time period, and filling the reader in on the tumultuous time period. The characters of Rick and Eve are fantastic from start to finish. Another reviewer mentioned that Rick reminded them of a Liam Neeson-type of character, a la the Taken franchise, and I think that is a perfect comparison.Overall, I enjoyed this book greatly. If you’re looking for a great political thriller with motorcycles, then you’ve come to the right place with your very specific needs!

A Stellar Ride By Veritas Vincit In this newest adventure for Rick Putnam, we see a decidedly different side of danger, and he is facing more primal and inexplicable enemies than political corruption and sinister doings in the highest echelons of power - at first. The motorcycle riding bad boy has a full plate once again and even more people relying on him than last time. He has nothing but his wits, his bike, and his endless boldness to overcome yet another group of cruel, selfish baddies that are seeking to destroy something precious and pure. The dichotomy between the beginning and end of this book is stark, displaying Irving's clear ability to handle an expansive book and a complex plot. His character work is exceptional, and readers have no choice but to root for the rugged hero who flies across the country like some sort of Hunter S. Thompson-inspired Robin Hood, helping those who can't help themselves. From politics and bureaucracy to cults, computer hackers, romance, and betrayal, this novel contains everything that an action-packed thriller needs - and then some.

High-Octane Action with Political Activism By Marta Cheng Even if you’re not familiar with the incident that took place at Wounded Knee back in the early seventies of the last century, this will not prevent you from enjoying Warrior by Terry Irving. The main protagonist in the book, Rick Putnam, is a smart-mouthed, tough-as-nails Vietnam vet who, along with his girlfriend, Eve Buffalo Calf, become embroiled in the standoff at Wounded Knee while bringing in much-needed supplies to her activist friends. Rick and Eve quickly discover that all is not as it seems, thanks to corrupt beaurocrats and evil political machinations. The author, Terry Irving, has his finger on the pulse of a particularly turbulent time of political unrest in America’s history. It’s reflected not only in the story itself but also in the cynical and suspicious way in which the characters, especially Putnam, view the U.S. government. Irving’s protagonist is the epitome of today’s anti-hero; eager to help the right cause while driven by the nightmares that subconsciously plague him. Warrior has plenty of high-octane action, political activism, witty repartee and just the right amount of tenderness between Rick and his girlfriend, Eve, to dispell a reader’s suspicions that Rick Putnam is anything but human. An enjoyable read.
