Powerful Saga of a New World Dynasty in Decline. Four centuries ago, the King of Spain granted the Alarcóns a huge tract of land a few miles west of Taos, New Mexico, a personal fiefdom in the New World. Now Juan Mateo fears he may be the last of the House of Alarcon. His ranch in disuse, his wife Carmela withdrawn into a private world of sexual fantasy that skirts madness, his house empty of an heir, Juan Mateo watches the corporate land developers circle like vultures around his family’s heritage. Then, one day, a young man arrives at the ranch by chance and Juan Mateo sees in him the son promised in a dream.

Review A most poignant and impressive novel, the story of doomed love that resonates like Greek tragedy. A moving reading experience. -- King Features, Parade of Books, November 12, 1978With tremendous grace, Dispenza integrates historically and imaginatively the stories of a dozen generations of Alarcons. -- The New Republic, November 1, 1978
From the Publisher A stunningsly realized novel of a great New Mexican dynasty and the land it dominated for four centuries.
From the Inside Flap "The House of Alarcon" is a novel of an American dynasty whose rise and fall is played out against the sweeping history of the Southwest. Rich in character and historical detail, it traces the fortunes of the Spaniards who settled New Mexico -- from the days of the Conquistadors, through the wars with the Indian Pueblos, the first missions, the colonization of New Mexico and the days of prosperity to the coming of the Americans to tame the West and, later, create a technological nightmare at nearby Los Alamos. Alive with the passions and intrigues of generations, this is at once the story of a single family and the survival of a culture.

A beautiful, sensual, lyrical book By Alexandra I found out about 'The House of Alarcon' through reading another of Dispenza's books, 'The Way of the Traveler.' This is a novel of tremendous beauty, sensual and lyrical. I had no idea this novel existed, or why it didn't become a huge hit when it was published. It's a great reading experience -- fascinating. The book goes back and forth between the present and the past -- all the way back to the conquistadors, in fact. A plot of land that is given to the Alarcon family by the King of Spain in the 1500s becomes the theater for amazing and magical family dramas. This is absolutely first-rate writing, and a story that you can practically feel through the pages.Read it -- you'll love it.

Fine First Novel - Wish He Wrote More By Vance This could have been a series of lyrical short stories tied together as an ancient family history...sometimes lyrical, disturbing, and interesting. The writing suffered at points, and it was clear this was the product of a novice writer. The question is why he didn't write another.
