I purchased this book in light of a discussion my church is having over wealth and women in ministry. 1 Timothy and Ephesians obviously come up with major passages in focus for these topics. Often times we read the Bible with a set of one-dimensional reading glasses and this book will certainly serve as a catalyst study for any honest discussion regarding both riches in Ephesus and the topics within the letters to both Timothy and the Ephesians. The sheer breadth of cultural information on Ephesus, the goddess Artemis, and the Artemisium alone is well worth the purchase. If you have ever read much of Ephesians and Timothy and thought, "what the heck is going on here?" then this book is going to breath new life into the text and help clarify what the aim and purpose of the "letter" to Timothy within the cultural texture of the period. Not only is this a study any biblical library or serious student of the Bible should not do without, it is also accessible. Though it is a scholarly work (I am not a seminary student) it is not overwhelmed with Greek text and footnotes that take up 3/4 of the page. The language is clear and Hoag's thoughts flow well as to make sense of the material. This book is a "must have" if you are going to do a study of anything surrounding the culture of Ephesus and I hope that church's can begin to unify over topics that have led to such division over the history of the church!
