Review "One doesn't have to read beyond the prologue of The Panama Affair (but by all means do) to know that what follows will contain a poignant and powerfully written tale. While I'm not typically a reader of military or war novels--or even historical novels, for that matter--this book grabbed and held my attention from the get-go. The Panama Affair is another tremendously engaging work of fiction by a consummate storyteller. Jeffrey Miller has created a tightly woven account of the wounds (in all of their dark and tragic manifestations) inflicted by human conflict. Each new book by this author is better than his last, which is a major accomplishment considering the high quality of his previous efforts. The authority and strength of Miller's novels are clearly based in his vast knowledge and love of his subject--there is nothing pedestrian here. As principally a short story writer, I'm always curious about the source of a novelist's endurance and stamina. I suspect there's a special Olympic well somewhere from which gifted novelists draw their stamina. Clearly, Jeffrey Miller drinks heartily from that well. We should all be thankful for his thirst." --Michael C. Keith, author of If Things Were Made to Last Forever and The Collector of Tears

Gray Let me first state two things that I’ve concluded over the past few years. One is that I rarely find a book from an independently published author that is above average. Two, rarer still is the moment where I find one that is fantastic: This is one of those moments. Without the need for hyperbole, I can easily attest that this novel was a joy to read throughout. From the initial intrigue and foreshadowing with Noriega himself and the vivid imagery that surrounds each scene, all the way to a thrilling catharsis, this book maintained a perfect equilibrium while his multifaceted characters traversed a hostile situation. Also, what I find to be the most enjoyable is the author’s obvious authority of his material. Mr. Miller has written this as if he’s actually been in each scene while possessing full knowledge of a career military soldier. I can’t recall the last time I read a military themed book this well done since The Seven Pillars of Wisdom; one of my favorites. In summary, if anyone else is looking for an exciting adventure with power and intrigue peppered throughout, then you can’t do better than this one. I’ve no doubt it will remain a staple in my library for a long time to come.

A fascinating adventure unravels as they become involved with Panama's nightlife during the intense times of the Panama Canal Treaty negotiations. Contains mature subject matter." - That is my thumbnail-teaser/description of the book. The author, like myself, was stationed at Howard AFB in the 1970's, which lends a personal authenticity to his story. But that's not all. Mr. Miller went the extra mile and included the Panamanian and Zonian perspectives (along with the U.S. serviceman's) in the historical background of the narrative. That is vital to an unbiased work, whether it be fiction or nonfiction. His storytelling is so good that it supersedes any of the nostalgic traps that could befall a lesser writer. Yes, those of us who were there will see ourselves on the page, but those who weren't will find that this just breathes more life into the characters. A fascinating story full of surprises!

Well written, thoroughly engaging story By Susan Jeffrey Miller's story takes the reader on a journey into the complexities of service life in a hot bed of intrigue, turmoil, and complicated human relationships. Miller's descriptive novel engages the reader with his detailed information of the Panama atmosphere, and I found I could not put this book down.
