Hank leaned his chair back, set his feet on the sheriff's desk, and tried not to think of Lilly, but her memory and words persisted. "You're worth it." He could hear her voice as clear as if she were still in Hickory Stick and not traipsing through saloons telling anyone who would stand still long enough about her Good Shepherd. Shrill barks and loud knocks stole his attention. "Now what?" Annoyed by a yapping dog, he threw open the door. "Shut that dog up." A beautiful woman stepped away from him. Her jade, green eyes flashed alarm, but she quickly recovered as her head went up, her shoulders straightened, and her face set with an expression that said he wasn't worth her time.

Many reasons to like this book, many reasons to dislike it By Red Apple Reader I believe LADY AND THE SCAMP is my first exposure to Patricia PacJac Carroll's books. True to its rating, it's sweet (clean). I found many qualities about this book that I enjoyed, and, unfortunately, just as many that disappointed. After careful consideration, I rate this book a solid 3 stars (= "it's okay").**QUALITIES I GENUINELY LIKED ABOUT THIS BOOK:*** Strong theme of the value of an individual life; "You are worth it."* Strong themes of self esteem coming from within, as well as through the appreciation and kindness of good friends and neighbors.* Characters learned from past experiences, healed, grew, and moved forward.* Meaningful Christian themes woven throughout, truly part of character's decisions (and properly categorized)**STRONGLY DISAPPOINTED IN:*** misused homophones and homonyms, for example: "I here you shut your saloon..." (here/hear) and "...dogs were wagging their tales and..." (tales/tails) and "I am the real Lady, and your still my..." (your/you're) and "... lowered and became all to alluring..." (to/too)* dropped punctuation, like "...take a bath and get changed" (needs a period)* random quotations that didn't belong, for example, a close quotation (only) when no one was speaking (all thought process)* in the last half of the book, too frequently motivation was simply missing...NO rhyme or reason for what characters did or didn't do. I found myself irritated with characters' actions because they never explained themselves and time spent in their heads was so brief.* misused apostrophes, confusing plural with possessive, for example, "Carl began drumming his finger's on the table..." (no possessive, it's obviously just 'fingers'), and "...that is one of Charlottes pups isn't..." (needs an apostrophe for possessive: Charlotte's)* *POOR* editing--desperately needed a thorough proofreading, for all of the reasons listed here, as well as British/American English misuses, for example, travelled vs traveled.* pacing was most uneven...racing at the end to make up for slow middleI freely recognize my inability to overlook typos and misuse of the language is my personal curse. Other readers may not find themselves yanked out of the story by such issues, hence *I do recommend* this story to fans of sweet Christian historical western romance.Sensuality Level: SweetLanguage: CleanViolence: mild

Hank, Carl and Doc areas different as men can be but given the right circumstances they come together. The characters are so well written and bloom before your eyes as you read of their transformation. Could not put it down. Impatiently waiting for the next book!
