The Widow of Zarephath’s young son, Yashar, abandons his mother to follow the prophet, Elijah, into Israel during a time of devastating drought. At Mount Carmel, when Elijah calls down fire and rain from heaven, Yashar witnesses God’s triumph over Queen Jezebel’s pagan priests. Overcome with the fear of the vengeful queen, Elijah runs away. Yashar follows the prophet but finds himself lost and alone in a foreign land until he is adopted by a stray dog. Yashar names the animal, Juttah and the once frail animal grows uncannily strong. At Jezreel, Juttah leads Yashar into Naboth’s vineyard and a new life. While the prophet, Elijah, comes out of hiding and pronounces judgment on nations and kings, Yashar works inNaboth’s vineyard and falls in love with both Naboth’s family and the art of making wine. Though he plans to grow old in the vineyard, Yashar witnesses Naboth’s brutal murder and Israel’s fall further into idolatry. Years later, when Juttah proves to be an instrument of God’s will, Yashar understands the warnings of the prophets concerning Israel and is forced to change his plans.

The story is narrated by Yashar, the young man whose life was forever changed by the prophet Elijah. Yashar and his widowed mother lived in Zarephath and provided for Elijah during the three years of drought before Elijah’s showdown with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. This showdown marks the beginning of Yashar’s journey from his home, and ultimately, back to Zarephath many years later. The northern kingdom of Israel under the reign of King Ahab comes alive through the experiences of Yashar and Juttah, his fierce and valiant dog. Yashar is befriended by Naboth, whose vineyard King Ahab coveted, and becomes one of the family. His life is entwined with theirs as he learns the craft of wine-making, marries and has children.I caught a glimpse of what it may have been like to live in these days. The author’s chilling rendition of Queen Jezebel, his descriptions of the priests of Baal and characters such as Bidkar, the army captain who turns from Baal worship to serve the true God enriched my understanding of the biblical accounts. I found the author’s narrative to be very accurate when compared with the events of Scripture. I’ve read the book twice and would definitely recommend it.

But that's what good historical fiction supported with excellent research can do By John Wyatt Adella, the mother of the narrator, describes prophets as being “unusual.” I suppose having God speak to you would make you a bit different. (God hasn't let me in on anything yet so I am different for more organic and genetic reasons.)Cliff Keller's book, "The Ivory House-The days of Elijah" (I can't make italics here) gives us a look at the prophet Elijah and he is a bit different, indeed. The description of Elijah and the the events that makes up the story are told by young Yashar (and his God-driven dog Juttah). We are told they are fictional but they are totally believable and likable. In fact, that is what I found myself doing-believing everything I was reading was exactly how it happened. Silly me.But that's what good historical fiction supported with excellent research can do. It takes us to that time and place and we believe that is way it actually happened. Plus, "The Ivory House" is a good read and fun. I enjoyed it and am looking forward to Book 3.Anyway, thank you Mr. Keller for another enjoyable book.
