It's a story of starvation, depression and hardship born by all early travelers crammed into the holds of cargo ships. It could have been any ship, bringing our ancestors across the sea. A great story by a talented author. Each of the first three chapters introduces the reader to the main characters as they make the decision to emigrate to the new country. I found the Gaelic speach hard at first, but it smoothed out as I got further into the book. I laughed as I envisioned the well-to-do ladies board the ship in their hoop skirts, and cried when small children began to die from small pox.You will meet the cruel captain, who would not hesitate to toss sick, living children overboard, and Jane, a healer, who helps save many. You will read of shipboard romances, a violent storm which nearly destroys the food supply, and a near disaster when the animosity between two young men erupts. Through it all, the heroic older man, Hugh McLeod, manages to maintain order and instill hope among the passengers in the hold.Thank you, Jeanne. I would love to visit Nova Scotia and see the old ship tied up in the harbor there.

By Randi I was absolutely captivated by the plot to this wonderfully written novel by Jeanne MacGregor Lahn! Its vivid descriptions really aid the imagination in placing yourself in the story as if right along with the passengers of the Hector. I loved the way she wrote so poetically its simply beautiful. I am a huge fan of historical novels and this one was certainly pleasing. It brings up a range of emotions during the twists and turns of the intricately woven plot. The story is truly one to be heard!

She brought me on board the Hector, right into the hold with the characters she so masterfully created. I shared the struggles, trials, joys, and celebrations - admiring the perseverance of these courageous Scottish immigrants. I would recommend Toward the Horizon for anyone who enjoys historical novels.
