ROSE OF SHARON, the third book in the Huachuca Trilogy, is a work of historical fiction set in the exquisitely beautiful Southeast Arizona Territory at the end of the 19th century. The Welty twins, Rose of Sharon and Jacob, are left alone after witnessing the murder of their parents until a wandering cowboy, Blake Harris, enters their lives. A new, fragile family emerges to face stressors of mental illness, another murder attempt, and clashes of culture and race. Jacob, burdened with a sense of guilt for his parent’s deaths, is drawn to Fort Huachuca and a military career. The passage of years finds Rose of Sharon developing her paranormal gifts, including contact with a fictional character from the future. Her precocious writing skills set her apart and, as with Jacob, she does not want to run the ranch. Loss, hardship and obstacles to her love for tri-racial White Buffalo mark her life path. Rose of Sharon’s story is one of struggles against all that would isolate her. Resolution comes in unanticipated and welcome ways.

About the Author Arletta Dawdy writes from Northern California but her heart is in the 19th century American West. When immersed in the stories of strong, independent women, she has been known to get lost in their adventures. Arletta's social work background lends itself to character development. Her extensive travels in the Southwest add believability to her settings. HUACHUCA WOMAN and BY GRACE are the first two books in The Huachuca Trilogy.

Miller Whether it’s with shadows coating the mountain or a shower of clear snowmelt and water tumbling down a cliff and pooling into a basin glinting with colors of gold, silver and copper, or a host of brilliantly-crafted descriptive passages, Arletta Dowdy brings as much life and character to the environment of this entertaining book as she does to the humans who people it. Senses are pleasured and the mind satisfied as the reader falls in love with Rose of Sharon, her twin Jacob, and the family building around them. Careful and thorough research by this gifted author is obvious as conditions and events of this historical era flow in comfortable reality with imagined life events. I love Arletta's flowing style and her way with words. The writing at times is almost lyrical, and she tells an important fictionalized story, but one that could have happened, and some of it lifted right out of the history books. She does her research. She takes care to craft characters you'll remember.I purchased this book because I was curious to see if I liked it, even though I do not read historical romance. I found it to be very compelling and was glad I did. Brava, Arletta!

Steinbeck would enjoy this one By Luv2read I loved the first two books of this trilogy and was thrilled when the third and final book went to press. The story starts before the story in the Author’s note when she mentions that the Rose of Sharon Joad was mentioned by Steinbeck in the Grapes of Wrath and she, Dawdy, writes that, “Mr. Steinbeck might have a good laugh over the appearance 50 years earlier before her time.” This instantly sparks interest in the story compelling me to start that first chapter. It did not disappoint as the story begins with a sleeping cowboy, Blake Harris, is awoken by two hungry children wandering in the desert. They share a meal and bond with the two, twins: Rose of Sharon Welty and her brother Jacob; telling Harris how three white men dressed as Indians murdered their parents and a ranch hand. Harris takes the children to tell the sheriff then drops them off with the local minister and sets off to capture the killers. When he returns with them they go on trial and are hanged. During this time the children bond with him and when it’s time for him to leave and return to his wandering life the Rose and Jacob beg him to take them and go back to their homestead place that was burned down. The beginning of the story sets up the emotion, pace, and characters so beautifully and continue to flow as we enter into their lives with Blake and his friend Jim Beale (along with other friends who live close by) rebuild the farm that was burned down—the one the children lived in with their parents. As things get triggered and tears flow, hearts are also opened with dinner time storytelling, a camping trip out to gather and bring back cattle, and a night visitation from a dead mother to her daughter, Rose. This visit portends that Rose has a gift, one that will factor into the story as it progresses. No spoilers here. The new family is adjusting and more laughter enters into the foursome’s live (Uncle Jim Beale, now included) as we see the children going to school. Their teacher Elise Jacks lives with different families every few months while continuing to teach at the local schoolhouse. A visit from Blake to inquire as to how the children are getting on and the reader knows sparks are going to fly: he the travelling cowboy settled down with two children and a friend and she the unsettled school teacher; they are a well matched pair. The story progresses taking unexpected twists and turns, right up to a satisfying ending. The writing is so lovely that the scene description almost becomes an entire new character as nature is brought to life with lush rich descriptions such as “dried weeds and mountain laurel with their bead-like red berries.” Action in those well-written scenes pulls the reader right into the late nineteenth century to move along from camp fire, to school house, to dinner table, to mermaid stories, and visitations from the beyond, and extra-sensory perceptions, a new friend and future—the white buffalo, and onward into a wonderful story that does not disappoint. I’m a fan of Arletta Dawdy. And it’s my guess that she’s right about Steinbeck having a good laugh. With the way it ended, I agree with this.
