Jesse Richards had been in Center City for almost four months and it had been a whirlwind. He revisited forty years in a snapshot. Forty years earlier, he had been arrested in Haiti for drug trafficking and mail tampering. With him was Cinnamon Dubois, one of Center City’s most esteemed young women and the daughter of Detective Leigh Dubois. Leigh had cut him a deal in exchange for staying away from her daughter who was eighteen at the time and he agreed. After serving twenty years in a federal minimum security prison, he left to the Caribbean with Marta Agbo, a Senegalese and Jamaican heiress. He was never sure where Marta’s money came from but when she visited him in prison they became fast friends, confidantes and later lovers. She was amazingly persuasive and gorgeous with ropes of hair and her skin was the color of teakwood. Her body consisted of luscious curves that screamed Africa. At the time, Marta was forty to his twenty-three. When he was released twenty years later, she was waiting for him and he was ready to go. Marta understood and accepted that a chunk of his heart was in a Center City loft with a young beautiful woman he could never forget but she also knew that the one thing Jesse was; was honorable and he always kept his word. His memoir, Twenty Years Away From America, had stunned Center City and the country by selling in droves. It was in its third printing and there were producers who wanted to turn it into a screenplay. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do, he wasn’t even sure if he would stay in Center City but on that day, he was going to face a crowd of interested readers for his first public appearance since the book released six weeks earlier. There was one face he hoped to see in the crowd, if only for a minute. Jesse was a dark, tall, strongly built handsome man who with that alone, attracted attention but having steel grey eyes in his dark face, only made him even more appealing, especially to women, women of all ages.

I was ready to dislike Jesse, send him back to the island anything to keep Malcolm and Cinnamon happy! Well Jesse is staying and everyone knows that he still loves Ms. C after 20 years of prison and another 20 away from Center City. As usual Ms. Menchan has given us a character, flaws & all, making a difference! What will Jesse do next? Loved this story......

I'm glad Jesse and Alexandra could renew their family bond, hopefully he will find what he "needs." Being put up on a pedestal is a tough job; but Cinnamon handled it and let others know that it was rough. Perfectly imperfect. Great job!!

By Idrissa Uqdah When I first learned of Jesse's existence and the role that he had played in young Cinnamon's life, I really wanted to dislike him...a lot. Smiles.But after reading the whole back story; I had to be fair snd admit that he isn't such a bad guy after all.I love the Cinnamon Black books and this one did not disappoint. The author is so good at telling a story. She gave us some more of her "fictionalized truths" by creating a believable character who we could understand and relate to.She didn't make light of his flaws but instead gave us his possibilities. I think that is important and unusual for a Black male character who usually are bashed in current AA literature.This installment also showed the insecurities in Malcolm Black's psyche. It kinda made me think...well big bad Malcolm Black puts on his pants in the same ways that the average brother does.Yes, Black men have real emotions and some of them are not afraid to show it.I was also happy that his sister now has the opportunity to enjoy her big brother's presence in her life.Angelia, this is a "straight, no chaser" type of story that I thoroughly enjoyed. Kudos to you for another Center City masterpiece.
