About the Author Kara Louise began writing Austen inspired stories in 2001 and two of her novels, "Darcy's Voyage," which was released in Sept. 2010, and "Only Mr. Darcy Will Do," which was released in March, 2011, were both published by Sourcebooks. "Mr. Darcy's Rival" is her seventh self-published novel.She grew up in the San Fernando Valley, just north of Los Angeles. She and her family moved to Kansas from Los Angeles in 1991, and in September, 2013, she and her husband moved to 5 wooded acres in the St. Louis area to be near their son and his wife. In May, 2014, they were blessed with their first granddaughter, whom they love and spoil endlessly. They also love animals, and have 5 cats, 1 dog, and a Shetland Pony.

And I was not disappointed, I loved it!Mr Darcy's Rival is a beautifully written romantic novel. Just a few of many favourite parts from the novel are, the carriage ride and the walk to the park while staying at Mr & Mrs Gardiner's home in London. The emotions were captured brilliantly in these scenes. I could not help but smile while Elizabeth was reading Anne's novel and then looking over at Mr Darcy for comparison and the way she nearly let slip she had read that intimate letter!!Mr Rickland is a worthy opponent for Darcy. I liked having him around. This variation is very original with lots of twists and turns that kept me hooked from start to finish.Kara has the gift of writing the sweetest most romantic novels. I enjoy the way the story flows seamlessly throughout. The characters are strong and remind me so much of the originals that I love, but with the uniqueness of Kara's touch. They are believable and enjoyable. I also love the way Kara blends some original parts of P&P into her story without merely rehashing large portions of it as some novels tend to do. This is another wonderful novel by Kara that will definitely be read many times. (Ps I would love a sequel to this novel please Kara?)A highly recommended read.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Ms. Louise has written a new favorite! By Regina M Mayorga I was so excited when I saw that Kara Louise was coming out with a new story. Some of my favorite P&P variations come from her, and this was no exception! I liked the presence of a brand new rival for Darcy and what that meant for our beloved couple. There were certainly enough traces of the original story sprinkled in there but in an original way, unique to this author. I know I'm reading a good story when I find myself cheering or "squealing" for our favorite couple and this story certainly had its moments (like the Underwood Ball).One random thing I also liked from this story is how the scene in which Colonel Fitzwilliam inadvertently tells Lizzy how Darcy separated Bingley from her sister is done. I won't spoil it but it was definitely one of maybe 2 times I've seen it done this way and I loved it. I cringed along with poor Darcy lol.Overall it was another amazing story by this author and I can't wait to read it again!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Kara Louise is always a JAFF author worth following. She certainly knows how to write about Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy with flair. By Ronda B. Ross Kara Louise is a writer of many JAFF novels and all of them have been entertaining. I do appreciate her story telling and this book does not disappoint. Darcy's rival is a new character, Lady Catherine's nephew from the De Bourg side of the family, so not a Darcy cousin. The intrigues abound around Darcy and Elizabeth in captivating ways. A very interesting item is that Anne De Bourg is a published author, of course, the only character who is told of this is Elizabeth which becomes a critical plot development. This is a good read--Enjoy!

Idealized Jack and Charmian, in the boxing game By Bobby Newman The Abysmal Brute is a quick read, but it is under-appreciated in importance for Jack London fans. London critics seem to frequently concentrate on his "socialist" fiction or his "nature" stories. Sometimes lost in the discussion are novels that emphasize London's interest in individualism, and the rise of the "superman." In the Abysmal Brute, we get tastes of various sides of London. Jack the social reformer shows us the corruption of the boxing game. Jack the individualist shows us the superman, a boxer who grew up in the wilderness, can beat any fighter in the world in short order, and attends literary lectures an hour before the big fight and reads poetry in his spare time. This seems to be London's fantasy self, inflated to incredible proportions. He has an equally powerful mate in the form of a reporter who is skeptical of the boxing game, Young Pat's equal/mate who is of course Charmian London in thin disguise. Suspend disbelief and have fun with this one, and realize there are deeper issues beneath the fantasy coating.

Over the course of his career, London wrote a handful of very good boxing stories. His gritty, naturalistic writing style is well-suited to the sport, and he always finds a clever way to approach the ring from an unexpected angle, never settling for the typically formulaic, underdog-overcomes-adversity-to-win-the-championship story line.Young Pat Glendon, the protagonist of The Abysmal Brute, is anything but an underdog. As London describes him, he may very well be the greatest boxer who ever lived. The son of a former champ, Young Pat is a proverbial "babe in the woods" who is brought out of the wilderness to embark on a big-city prizefighting career. This young Hercules of the forest has been blessed with a remarkable physical strength and prodigious natural talents that have been polished to brilliance under the tutelage of his father. A sensitive young man more disposed toward reading poetry than pugilism, Pat shows little enthusiasm for his new vocation. Stubener, the lucky man chosen to manage this ultimate fighter, finds himself charged with the difficult task of finding challenging opponents, while shielding the young man's innocent eyes from the corruption and graft which pervades the entire system of fight promotion.In addition to possessing an obviously profound knowledge of his subject, London exhibits a true love for boxing. His enthusiasm is infectious, even to the reader who otherwise cares little for the sport. The detailed, naturalistic descriptions of boxing matches, the people who fight them, and the combat strategy involved really creates the feeling of being in the ring with the contenders. The vivid realism is somewhat counteracted by the fact that London makes his hero into such a superman that his perfection defies believability. On the other hand, with a little updating this book could easily be turned into a Hollywood movie (where defying believability is commonplace).When compared to London's other boxing stories, The Abysmal Brute is on a par with London's other boxing novel, The Game, but not as compelling as his excellent short stories "A Piece of Steak" and "The Mexican," which are far more dark and serious in tone. Though there's a sprinkling of London's pet philosophical themes throughout the story--evolution, nature vs. nurture, the individual vs. the system, rebellion against injustice--overall this novel has a relatively light-hearted feel. The Abysmal Brute is a brief and entertaining read with enough unexpected turns in its plot to qualify it as a pleasant surprise.The paperback edition from Bison books features an introductory essay by Michael Oriard that puts the book into historical context and gives the reader a good picture of the boxing world of a hundred years ago. Oriard also addresses the issue of whether or not London was a racist, and the role of race in boxing at the turn of the century.

And it has a happy ending.It takes place in Jack London's boxing world in the early part of the 20th Century. Son of a fighter, the young man in question was raised in the country. He was big, strong and raised by his father. He didn't smoke or drink or carouse with women. He was just a country boy who loved the outdoors. He had a pure heart but his father trained him to be a fighter. And, according to the story, when the father was ailing, he sent for a reporter who specialized in boxing and sent the boy down to San Francisco in the reporter's care to compete in the boxing ring.The boy was an innocent but he easily defeated all his opponents. Eventually though he learned to not knock them out in the first moments of a fight. He learned to play to the audience. He did well. The reporter was his manager and made a lot of money on him. The boy, who was called the Abysmal Brute was still naive though. He didn't know that fights were fixed. He also became enamored with a beautiful female reporter who he instantly fell in love with.How it all turned out is the stuff of legends. I was indeed smiling at the perfect conclusion. And you will be too.

About the Author Rudolfo Anaya, widely acclaimed as one of the founders of modern Chicano literature, is professor emeritus of English at the University of New Mexico. Anaya was presented with the National Medal of Arts for literature in 2001 and his novel Alburquerque (the city's original Spanish spelling) won the PEN Center West Award for Fiction. By A Customer Rudolfo Anaya has a remarkable way of telling a stroy from the eyes of person that grew up in the southwest. Rudolfo's descriptions of the life and strugles of his characters always make reminds me of my child hoood while growing up in that culture. His books tell it like it is or was and the Heart of Aztlan is no exception. It is a plesure to read a book from an author who takes his characters from real life experiences. If you want to see life through a Hispanic growing up in the southwest read Heart of Aztlan.

Anaya tells a shifting story about the Chavez family moving away from ther land in Guadalupe and adapting to an urban life in a 1950s New Mexico barrio. Anaya gives a fairly convincing account of chicano lifestlye in the barrio. He describes all aspects of the chicano culture, even a bit of superstition and magic. Beyond all this, Anaya's novel includes a kalediscope of happenings that make it very easy to just read without stopping. There's a lot more to it than simply reflecting on the barrio culture. It is interesting, enjoyable and definately worth reading.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Novel With Something to Say By Oddsfish I know that when Heart of Aztlan came out it was pretty well bashed by the critics. Admittedly, it isn't up to the level of Anaya's best work (i.e. Bless Me, Ultima), and its flaws are pretty obvious. It's an unbalanced novel. So much space of the novel is spent following Jason and his struggles in a school that devalues him and his culture, and his story seems quite unfinished at the end of the novel. The magical realism is fine and important but is so suddenly introduced in the novel as to feel an intrusion. I've no problem with the presence or the shape of politics in this novel, but I did feel that Anaya was a little heavy-handed in its treatment. The beginning half of the novel is, to be honest, pretty dull.And yet, despite these frustrations I have with the book, it has a lot of merit. There is a lot of heart in this story. The loss of land; the struggles of being caught up in the dehumanizing crush of work in the train yards and life in the city; the hopelessness and self-hatred that can be acquired in the schools; the strains that being poor, powerless, and marginalized can press upon a family; the sad plight of the family who is ostracized from even their own community--each of these struggles is vividly and compassionately depicted in the novel. And working against these forces is Clemente's rising consciousness, and the myths that he is coming to embody and invoke. When I get to the novel's ending (I won't give it away), it feels really right and really feels like something has been said in this book. The ending feels artistic, mythically charged, and you leave the novel with a sense of urgency, the desire to work toward a more just world.So, it's not a perfect novel, not for everyone's taste, but it is, ultimately, a worthwhile novel, with something to say.

25 of 27 people found the following review helpful. An Oregonian Saga - Well Done By Jerry Kelley A well-told tale of settling of Oregon in the first decade of the 20th Century. This Pulitzer Prize winning novel captures the spirit of the times as those hardy pioneers struggle to settle a difficult land. Mr. Davis' wry humor makes this a reader's delight. Having lived in the general area as a youth I found many of the incidents sounding like the seemingly endless tales that my father and his collegues would spend hours swapping.

Davis, most notably the novel Winds of Morning and the beautifully executed short story, "The Homestead Orchard." It was with pleasurable anticipation that I obtained Davis's prizewinning magnum opus.But this monstrosity totally surprised me. The rendering of Oregon's history and geography is too far removed from the truth for a novel that is supposed to be a fanciful tapestry of Oregon's history and geography--it's so fanciful as to merely annoy. The characters are not well-developed and are cartoonish. I can stand fantasy sequences (loved Dickens's Little Dorrit), but this endless ramble exhausted my patience. I kept waiting to reach the good part. I should have given up after the first 100 pages.H. L. Davis is a little-known and under-appreciated author whose works are not of even quality. Following is my list of his works that I've read, in order of my esteem from highest to lowest.1. The Homestead Orchard--humorous, sad, joyous, beautifully crafted short story about a father and ex-con son.2. Old Man Isbell's Wife--humorous, exceedingly poignant short story about an aging cowboy and his younger wife3. Bench Squatters--poignant short story about a single dad and his kids4. Flying Switch--action-packed hilarious short story about a runaway train5. Open Winter--sweet & realistic short story about moving a herd of horses6. Harp of a Thousand Strings--somewhat saga-like novel of the French Revolution related to the American experience7. Winds Of Morning--novel about a young lawman investigating a crime8. Several other short stories--some saga-like (with Davis, saga-like tends to mean it's boring)9. The Distant Music--saga-like novel of an Oregon family's generations10. Beulah Land--saga-like novel of America's westward movement11. All of Davis's essays--not profound but they reveal Davis's thinking12. The Kettle of Fire--a fictional legend that doesn't really work13. Honey in the Horn--spare yourself! Saga-like, overlong, random, Pulitzer-prize winning, historically wildly inaccurate, pointless novel of Oregon historyTo access the short stories, get a copy of his Collected Essays and Short Stories, published by the University of Idaho Press. Even better, if you can find it at a reasonable price, buy a copy of Davis's short story collection, Team Bells Woke Me (currently the best Amazon Marketplace price is $19.21, but this gets you Bench Squatters, Flying Switch, and some other lesser pieces not in the Collected Essays and Short Stories).

I Was Surprised By How Much I Enjoyed This Book By AgnesMack I used to have this long speech I'd give about 'literature' and how much more concerned with quality of content I am than the topic of the content. I used to say that I'd read a 1,000 page book written on the history of a couch, if the writing was done interestingly enough, because I am not typically very concerned with plots, suspense or other manipulative techniques that are typically used to make me forget / not notice that the writing is sub par.It's been a long time since that speech and a long time since I've read something on a topic that bored me to tears, yet I remained completely absorbed. This book did manage to do that for me though.Honey in the Horn takes place in the Pacific Northwest, when it was still half overrun by indigenous people and almost everyone in the area was transient. There was a lot of farming business, killing of people business and jail-breaking business. None of these topics are ones that I'm ever particularly interested in, but H.L. Davis held my attention well.I am typically anti-flowery descriptions in books. I am typically anti-two-pages-of-description-about-a-character-we're-only-going-to-read-one-line-of-dialogue-from-and-then-never-see-again. However, H.L. Davis could write a 1,000 page book about the history of a couch and I'd read it.What I'm trying to tell you is that the man has his chops and I dug it.

A Historical Look at Humanity from the perspective of an animal By Diane Cunningham An amazing book....for animal lovers and for those who follow the horrific history of the Nazi's and Jews during World War II. It was a book that was deeper than a story about the War....the comments on humanity ....were profound.

Beautiful and touching story By Amanda I am an avid dog lover and Jewish as well :-)This book is incredibly moving and hard to put down, it's a very quick read but Kravitz's detailed writing will likely linger in your thoughts. The Holocaust being told from a dogs point of view is unique, sincere and pure. I hope more of this authors work becomes translated in English for us to enjoy.

About the Author His website introduces Peter Devine as a “storyteller,” and it is certainly an apt description. Having lived his life gathering stories, it is no wonder that he is adept at recounting them. His writing career spans nearly fifty years, dating from the time when he and his first wife began their globestraddling adventures and the author wrote early in the mornings, on beaches, in bungalows, on trains, in taverns, frequently using his overturned knapsack as a writing desk and penning his work longhand in notebooks. In majoring in journalism at university he had learned the art of developing a storyline, which is journalists do when they gather and arrange facts. “But of course a writer of fiction is able to interpret facts and convey impressions for the purpose of entertainment and inspiration, which gives us a bit more leeway than journalists,” he observes. His first bylines were for sports and human interest pieces, followed by travel pieces and personality profiles. He began devoting himself to the craft of the short story with his 1988 collection entitled Try Anything Once, and followed it up in 1994 with another collection, And Then It Begins. Along the way he published a book of essays, Buck Naked and Covered in Grits, an inquiry into the nature of women's desires, Real Women Only Want One Thing, and a memoir of his travels, One Hand Waving Free. His novels include Certain Knowledge (1998), Don't You Ever Kiss Me Once (2003), and The Pumpkin Eater (2005). A onetime resident of New Orleans, following Hurricane Katrina he wrote Indecent Exposure: Hurricane Katrina Lays Bare the Soul of the Old South. He is currently completing a novel about WWII survivors in the Venezuelan rain forest in 1954 entitled Lift A Cup to Ancient Battles. Peter Devine currently lives in Texas with his wife Maria and their two hurricane rescue dogs, Lizzie and Lilly.

By Kerry Evens Diving into The Havana Treatment is something akin to pulling out that battered photo album. The author has artfully connected his stories and experiences to what it is to be innately human – leaving just enough ambiguity for the reader to relate personally with the experience.Stylistically, you’ll find that this author writes from a raw, worldly and yet innocent place. Open to anything and finding much living in that vulnerable place. Henry David Thoreau wrote “I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life.” The stories found in the Havana Treatment speak specifically to “sucking the marrow out of life.”Although an easy read, this book will be most appreciated by a reader who has lived some life, had some pain and hardships, and come out the other side – a perfect book for a road trip or on a plane to a far land. Let the stories permeate your imagination, and you can almost smell the sex and smoke in the darkened bar, feel the sticky counter top and hear the squeak from tired bedsprings.This author strips down his stories to the core of humanness, connecting with our basest desires, primal sins and naked truths. As the reader, you’re taken from being “f#%*#%d proper” in the most sexual sense, to being “proper f#%^*#d", meaning that “normalcy was suddenly a long way off, and that life might never be truly decent again.”If there is a criticism to be found in this book, it’s that in a few cases the stories end abruptly, leaving the reader feeling slightly unfulfilled – although, perhaps this is intentional, to allow the reader the opportunity to choose an ending.I found this book is rare mix of cold, harsh reality and raw, honest sexuality. Each short story in Havana Treatment introduces you to a whole person in a just a few moments or hours, leaving you with a solid understanding of who they are, but wanting more of the story. Described as an exploration of the shelf life of a romance, Havana Treatment doesn’t disappoint, and each story is as compelling and oxymoronically uniquely typical as the next.The human race is completely infatuated with the idea of love, and after spending time with Devine’s characters, it is easy to see why. A moment with someone can become a lifetime of dedication. A person’s soul can be boiled down to one momentous story that could have seemed so unimportant at the time, but because the encounter was so genuine it shapes someone forever.Devine has such a strong grasp on these realities. Ethan Cooper's latest novel, The Spirit of the Waynes, explores all these issues and more: the decline of the patriarch, Wriston Wayne, an indomitable figure who will not go gentle into that good night; the response of his loyal but conflicted son, Charles, who is simultaneously grappling with the challenges of late middle age; and the divergent interests of Wayne's second wife — all set within the unique eco-system that is senior living in Florida. Among Cooper's strengths as an author is that he captures the complexity and ambivalence that is real life. This novel, his fifth, is no exception: the characters feel fully drawn, the ethical dilemmas authentic and resistant to simple answers, the events and relationships unfold plausibly and gently. Late in the book, there is a scene between father and son on a golf course that expresses the pain and glory of the human condition; it brought tears to my eyes and will haunt me for a long time. Once again, Ethan Cooper has woven a singular story that has universal meaning.

Faber In "The Spirit of the Waynes," Ethan Cooper writes elegantly and with humor about a middle aged man navigating his relationship with his father, and his father's decline in old age. It is a truly great read, both funny and touching.Charlie Wayne, a banker who lives in New York City and suddenly finds himself scrambling to find work, is the son of Wriston Wayne, a tremendously charismatic man who was once a top-tier financial executive, a fact that remains central to his identify many years after he has retired and moved from Minnesota to Florida.The story follows Charlie and his wife, Jane, through two visits to Naples, Florida, the first at the secret behest of Wriston's second wife, Cindy, who is concerned that he should no longer be driving. (The delightfully manipulative Cindy manages to outflank the men in the novel at just about every turn.)Cooper paints fully drawn characters and a vivid portrait of their world with language that is supple and often funny. For example, Charlie is also contending with own aging, and recalls that in his last race -- Charlie is a jogger -- he was passed by a man in a Muppet costume. The rich imagery is another treat sprinkled throughout. Cooper describes the metastasizing suburban sprawl growing over time in Naples, at one point recounting that a lovey mid-century modern house formerly owned by one of Wriston's friends had been replaced by "a mansion with a Spanish-tile roof that fit the site the way a fortress edges its moat."The novel also has powerfully touching moments. At one point towards the end, Wriston winks at Jane as he tries to play golf, his old charm still lingering in a fast-failing body. The reader practically crumples with emotion at the gesture.The book is a triumph, examining themes of denial and the complications of family. Five stars, without question.

In this masterful novel, Ethan Cooper captures the drama of a middle age son watching his father attempting to deny the limits imposed by aging. Although the father, Wriston Wayne, has reached the great age of 93, he fights to keep his world from shrinking. He plays golf and bridge much later in life than most of his contemporaries, monitors his investment portfolio and, yes, still drives his car.The son, Charlie, tries to protect his father from the risks and realities he faces as he attempts to deal with his own problem of a declining career in banking --not an ideal profession for a man in his late 50’s. Charlie does what he can to keep his career alive and does what he must to lessen his own sense of opportunity past.Cooper’s principal characters and their family dynamic are rendered with clarity and empathy. Their means of coping with the decline in independence and influence are effective until they run up against real world limits. Tenacity and the will to excel cannot overcome some obstacles.The problems of this aging father and his son are experiences we will all face eventually. The story is poignant, even tragic in parts, but it is not without inspiration. Their fight to carry on helps them achieve a rare longevity, each in his own stage of life.This book, like Cooper’s other 4 novels, is insightful and dynamic. While this story depicts the family dynamic of the Waynes, Cooper’s other novels focus primarily on corporate politics in different business environments and the personalities that thrive, fail or just get by. Family dynamics are secondary but never unimportant in defining the personalities of the principle characters.I highly recommend this book as well as Cooper’s other novels.

I first read a book by Stuart in early 2013, and I was fascinated by his characters and the setting, Edinburgh in the mid 1700’s. Robert Young and Captain Charles Travers make an awesome team………..trying to solve a mystery (or sometimes a few mysteries) Since that first book I have followed Robert Young of Newbiggin, an investigator, as he sets out to find justice in the cases that he tries to solve.Masking the Truth is one that will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. After an actress is attacked and the gentlemen that are believed to have committed this crime are set free, Robert keeps very busy when someone starts killing these gentlemen. He tries to figure out what is happening, to solve this mystery before anyone else is hurt.I like mysteries, and I think I can figure most of them out very quickly, but I must admit I did not see all the twists and turns in this book. The book was almost finished and I was still trying to find the answers. I highly recommend this book and others that Stuart S. Laing has written. I look forward to more books about Robert Young of Newbiggin!!

Usually we have a bad guy as these are murder mystery books but this time there are a group of them and they are the worst yet. However its not so easy as just catching the bad guy and locking him up. This is where the writer lets the story turn dark and exciting. A young actress is the victim of a horrible crime at the hands of the Cannongate club and those wealthy young men have the power and influence to justice swing in their favour.No more need be said about the plot. The basics of it made it a must read for me. All the usual characters are present in this story but this time around more Robert and Charles than the good Sergeant. The plot evolved a bit more around the mystery and the quest for justice and all the dark paths it took. There were some really great sidelines such as the development with Estelle's mother which could turn into another exciting book. not saying anything moreBut the story was wonderful. the pursuit of justice and a brilliant twist at the ending. I can say that at no point did I catch on until the reveal. you might see in future reviews that more seasoned mystery readers might have worked it out but even if they did I highly doubt they figured out the ending. in short it was sensational.

It is exciting with espionage and intrigue and will keep you turning pages.In 1939, Walter Friedeman, a scientist in Nazi Germany has discovered the formula to enrich uranium in three months. Realizing that he will be giving Hitler the key to controlling the world and the evil he will be unleashing, he devises a way slip the formula out of Germany to England via his teenage son. The method he uses is ingenious, not even the boy realizes he has it. Thus starts the race between Germany and England to capture the boy and formula.This book is historical fiction although many of the characters were actually involved in WWII. I had heard about Ian Fleming and J. R. R. Tolkien, (both authors) and wanted to know if they were really part of the war effort. Fleming was a well know intelligence agent during this period. Tolkien was trained to decipher codes during the war but there is no record that he was actually used. The rest of characters are well developed and believable. The story is a roller coaster ride till the end.Pick this book up today, it’s a great read for a cold autumn evening. Judging by this novel, I can’t wait to read the first one.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. intimate portrait of Intrigue and love in the French court By Julianne Quaine Book number 12 in 1001 books you must read before you die. Known as the first novel written in French it relates the story of courtiers in the court of Henri II of France around the end of his reign in 1559. Written a century later with a number of known historical characters including Catherine de Medici (Henri's wife), Mary Stuart, the Dauphine's wife, known as the Reine Dauphine and fleeting mentions of the ascension to the throne of England by Elizabeth I the story is of a young married woman the Princess of Cleves thrown into the political and romantic intrigue of the royal court who attempts not to be drawn into an affair with a much admired and sought after courtier, the Duc de Nemours whom she has fallen in love with. In trying to control her passion she turns to her husband for assistance but as could be predicted it all turns to custard with the husband's jealousy and the lover attempting to sway her while she tries to ignore and control her feelings. The book has some wonderful intimate moments describing the emotional turmoil of the wife in her struggles, the husband's attempts to treat the wife's confession with the compassion that it deserves, and the Duc's attempts to observe the Princess from afar, hoping eventually she will turn to him after her husband's death. I think I could have done with a better translation - buying the free kindle version without foot notes in novels published a few centuries ago is a bit hit and miss!

Boilerplate Sinclair, but not without its charms By Karl Janssen The Machine is a three-act play by Upton Sinclair, which was originally published in 1912 in the collection Plays of Protest. Although it contains some of the same characters who appeared in his novels The Metropolis and The Moneychangers, it is intended to be a stand-alone piece and requires no prior knowledge of those previous books.The play exposes the system of patronage and graft established by the Tammany Hall organization, a corrupt political machine which controlled New York politics through the early 20th century. Three socialist activists intend to educate a wealthy young woman who has expressed a curiosity toward their political views. This socialite and philanthropist, Laura Hegan, is the daughter of Jim Hegan, a railroad baron, who is in cahoots with the Tammany gang. When Laura's newfound friends conduct an investigation into some of Hegan's shady dealings, the daughter is rudely awakened to the corrupt activities of the father.The plot revolves around the usual struggle of socialism against big business which dominates Sinclair's entire body of work. The one unexpected aspect to this story is a brief mention of human trafficking. Hegan supports Tammany Hall in order to further his business interests, while a white slavery ring supports Tammany Hall in order to protect their criminal activities, so it is implied that Hegan is inadvertently supporting human trafficking and prostitution. This thread, however, is little developed. Readers familiar with Sinclair's work will find few surprises here. That's not to say the piece is unworthy of reading. Though it covers familiar territory, it covers it well, and neither bores nor disappoints. As is common in Sinclair's work, the separation between the forces of good (socialism) and evil (capitalism) is as stark as black and white. In the third act, however, he introduces some refreshing shades of gray into the debate.I don't believe The Machine was ever produced for the stage, and I'm not sure I would want to sit in a theatre for an hour and a half and watch it, but when read as a short story it makes for a brisk and satisfying read. It's almost all dialogue, with little stage direction, so it's very easy to forget that you're reading a play. I have not yet found a work of Sinclair's fiction that compares to his masterpiece The Jungle, and this play doesn't come close to attaining the literary heights of that great novel. Yet for those who enjoy Sinclair's writing, have an interest in the political history of this time period, and sympathize with the author's message, reading The Machine is worth the brief time spent.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fine Drama in a 3-Act Play By Don Kidwell Having devoured "The Jungle" year ago, I found this rare gem from the same author and rather enjoyed it. Book was well-formatted for kindle and a good buy short of finding it as part of a compilation. Very good book!
