The Adventure of the Engineer's Mom: A New Sherlock Holmes Adventure (New Sherlock Holmes Mysteries) (Volume 12), by Craig Stephen Copland

About the Author In May of 2014 the Sherlock Holmes Society of Canada – better known as The Bootmakers (www.torontobootmakers.com) – announced a contest for a new Sherlock Holmes story. Although he had no experience writing fiction, the author submitted a short Sherlock Holmes mystery and was blessed to be declared one of the winners. Thus inspired, he has continued to write new Sherlock Holmes mysteries since. In real life he writes about and serves as a consultant for political campaigns in Canada and the USA (www.ConservativeGrowth.net), but would abandon that pursuit if he could possibly earn a decent living writing about Sherlock Holmes. He currently writes from Toronto, Tokyo, and Manhattan.

Mr Copeland's stories tend to be set within periods of actual history which is a nice touch because the reader meets famous people, is informed about various events and scientific breakthroughs taking place at the time. In short, good historical fiction with Holmes and Watson et all included. Where outings of this nature may fall down is if the plot and its continuity are not the elements driving the story. If the plot meanders, as it does numerous times, or if the narrative gets somewhat sidetracked, the additional elements can't bring it to life.Although I'd recommend purchasing the book and, for that matter, Mr Copeland's other Holmes/Watson outings, readers will find this particular story does not meet the standards set by others of Mr Copeland's outings.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Don't miss this book!! By Debbie Haston I have to say that I have read all of Christina McKnight's books starting with Shunned No More. I loved them all! Scorned Ever More has to be her best. She warns us that all stories don't have a happy ending. This story draws you in and keeps you rooting for the Marquis of Drake/Andrew. Hating Benji and Hoping that Lorelei will forget what her Father and country wants and will marry the right one. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat, make you shout and cry but is the absolute best book I have read in a very long time. Christina is really good at fleshing out the characters and the plot. She makes you feel what the characters feel and want what they want.

I was unable to put this book down and did not get much sleep until I finished it lol.... don't get me wrong I was yelling at the characters and in tears countless times as if I could make them do what I wanted. Christina McKnight is gifted author and really gets you right there with her characters and if you have not read one of her books please start with this series.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Eye Spy By April Gregory McPhillips *** May contain spoiler ***I received this book from the author for an honest review. This is my first Christina McKnight book and I must say I have been sucked in and now I must read more. :) This was one of the first spy type books I have read in the Historical Romance Genre. I loved it. I love the twists and turns that kept me turning the pages.Lady Lorele the daughter of french spies who's family have to do what they do and come out to be uncaring towards her. Just all business all the time. But when your life is on the line I suppose it is what you do. But I think in their own way they loved their daughter. Lorelei loves her parents but must do what she has to do for her parents sake in hopes that it will set her free to a life she wants to have even when you is not even sure if that is possible.Andrew Penten, The Marquis of Drake. A man that is use to getting everything he wants. Plans to never married or have heirs etc until he meet Lady Lorelie. Andrews world is turned upside down for he is slowly falling for this mysterious woman he has no ideas why she is truly there. Andrews friend Benji to me is a very strange character. I guess part of it is that I just thought maybe there was more to him then just that cold hearted man who screws his friend and marries the woman he love just so that he could not have her.In a race to find what Lorelei's family is looking for and disappear from everyone and start over Lorele finds her self in a predicament. As well as Andrew. Now I must find out what happens with Andrew. What Happen to Peter? What about the baby? So many questions and I cannot wait to read more.I would recommend this book to friends. :)

Castle Rackrent, by Maria Edgeworth

Review Thady Quirk - or "honest Thady" - having lived on the estate of Castle Rackrent for most of his long life, takes it upon himself to "publish the MEMOIRS of the RACKRENT FAMLY." Speaking in Irish vernacular, he describes the masters he and his family have served under: Sir Patrick, who fills his house with guests and drinks himself to death; Sir Murtagh, his heir, a "great lawyer," who refuses - "out of honor" - to pay Sir Patrick's debts; and Sir Kit, who gambles and eventually sells his estate to Thady's son. Through Thady's memories of these landowners (and the tenants who all too often had to pay for the landownders' indulgences) we gain a picture of fedual life in Ireland before the Irish Revolution. Thady is an unreliable narrator who, it appears, cannot - or does not - tell the whole story. Which leaves a question. Is Thady a naive and loyal servant or is he a clever and self-serving man who knows how to get his point across and his plans accomplished without seeming to know what he is saying or doing? Adding to the underlying irony of the narrative is the contrast between Thady and the anonymous, condescending British voice of the mock glossary of terms. Humorous and biting, Castle Rackrent is a largely unrecognized jewel of social satire. -- For great reviews of books for girls, check out Let's Hear It for the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14. -- From 500 Great Books by Women; review by Erica Bauermeister

From the Back Cover Set in Ireland prior to its achieving legislative independence from Britain in 1782, Castle Rackrent tells the story of three generations of an estate-owning family as seen through the eyes -- and as told in the voice -- of their longtime servant, Thady Quirk, recorded and commented on by an anonymous Editor. This edition of Maria Edgeworth's first novel is based on the 1832 edition, the last revised by her, and includes Susan Kubica Howard's foot-of-the-page notes on the text of the memoir as well as on the notes and glosses the Editor offers "for the information of the ignorant English reader." Howard's Introduction situates the novel in its political and historical context and suggests a reading of the novel as Edgeworth's contribution to the discussion of the controversial Act of Union between Ireland and Britain that went into effect immediately after the novel's publication in London in 1800.

About the Author English novelist, best known for her creative illustrations of Irish life in her works. Edgeworth's writing style is notable for its vitality, humour, clarity and speaks of her innate talent. Her first novel Castle Rackrent was an instant and huge success.

If there is stars by minus I would give it 5 - . It was the worst un-human voice google is far much better than this thing. I would love to return it, I hope they agree.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A novel introducing Ireland to the English By Steven Davis Castle Rackrent is not, as its title might suggest, a gothic novel. Instead it is an affectionate satire of Irish life in the 18th Century. The occasion for its publication was the forthcoming union between Ireland and Great Britain. The author proposes to introduce the Irish to their neighbors, claiming that the English know less about Ireland than about many other nations. The novel is in the form of an oral memoir by Thady Quirk, a venerable servant of the Rackrent estate. He recounts four successive holders of the baronetcy, men varying from the genial, to the querulous, to the miserly, and the extravagant. His speech is sprinkled with regionalisms which the author explains in footnotes and an extensive glossary. Many of these notes contain anecdotes that are just as entertaining as the main narrative. Some of the descriptions of Irish customs, mannerisms and speech are no doubt still apt today.Castle Rackrent is a pleasant little story that has its own place in the development of the English novel and will surely amuse anyone who wants to pay a visit to the Ireland of two centuries ago.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An Interesting and Readable Curiosity By Pop Bop Often referred to as the original and first satirical comedy of regional manners this is a surprisingly accessible, readable and entertaining novel. It is politically incorrect, mildly offensive to Irish sensibilities, and occupies an odd historical niche. If you are a student of Irish and U.K. history you will no doubt find much to dislike. If you are looking for a light comedy of manners with a bit of an edge, or if you are interested in undeservedly overlooked women writers, this might be an intriguing choice.

This vintage book contains Alexandre Dumas’s 1910 novel, "Chicot the Jester". A collaborative effort with Auguste Maquet, it tells the fantastic story of a nobleman jester who has the audacity to mock a king and the guile to disarm a venerable knight in a heated battle. Concerning one of Dumas’s most well-known and marvellously crafted characters, "Chicot the Jester" is a must-read for fans of Dumas’s seminal work, and is not to be missed by the discerning collector. Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870) was a famous French writer. He is best remembered for his exciting romantic sagas, including "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo". Despite making a great deal of money from his writing, Dumas was almost perpetually penniless thanks to his veritably extravagant lifestyle. His novels have been translated into nearly a hundred different languages, and have inspired over 200 motion pictures. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing this antiquarian book in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

31 of 33 people found the following review helpful. a true favorite By A Customer In some ways this is my favorite Dumas and thus I think that it ranks with the Count of Monte Cristo and the Three Musketeers. The action takes place during Henry III's reign and follows two intertwined plot lines: 1)the adventures of Chicot, the king's "jester," and 2) the love intriques of Bussy d'Amboise and the tragic Dame de Monsoreau. The political rivalries of the various aristocratic court factions is entertaining and interesting and, it is my impression, fairly (but not completely) accurate history. Though Chicot is an invention and the historical Bussy (a footnote character of the period) highly highly romanticised. Who cares if a small liberty or two are taken? Chicot is marvelously drawn, a wonderful character who both loves and despises his weak and highly flawed benefactor, Henry III. Chicot is clever, cunning, brave and decent but interested too in his own interests. He is also a proud but poor Gascon gentleman. He manipulates the king for his own amusment but also for good purpose. Were the book only about him it would be a great read. But even better, Dumas gives us Bussy d'Amboise, Louis de Clermont, Comte de Bussy, the brave, proud, handsome, man of honor who personafies the French aristrocratic (especially the post-Revolution, 19th Cent. Romantic notion of,) ethos. The romance between Bussy and La Dame (Diana) is romantic indeed: he is injured in a cowardly ambush (in which he defends himself magnificantly, of course) Diana nurses him but secretly and her identity remains a mystery for sometime. Poor Diana has a tragic situation and eventually, Bussy manages to find her etc... The ending is unforegettable and provides the basis for the sequal: The Forty-Five Guardsmen: an uneven story with some good moments, but sadly, inferior to this. Note: "La Dame" is the sequal to Marguerite de Valois (see film: La Reign Margot aka Queen Margot) I first read this when I was about 19 and it is still great, great fun 21 years later. If you like any Dumas, you'll like this alot. Technically, of course, this is not great literature but it is great in its own way.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. good book but too many typos in this edition By qh Great book if you are a Dumas fan, and especially if you've read "La Reine Margot". But this edition (ISBN 1-60096-103-7) of the book is full of typos. They even misspelled the name on the front cover - if you click on the "Search inside the book", you'll see the name of the book blatantly misspelled as "Chico the Jester". These typos get really annoying in an otherwise great book. I would not buy books from this publisher (Waking Lion Press) any more.

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. sad By robsky kostratsky I read this book after I saw movie La Dam de Monsoreau when I visited France with my parents, I was 12. I think the actual book is much better than a movie, Dumas made a good statement in this book by drawing the line between something dirty, which is politics and something that could be so clean, beautiful and yet tragic, which is love. Whenever we love something in this life, we afraid it will be taking away, nothing is permanent. Although this book is a complete fiction, the message in it is very real.Highly recommended.

"A great multitude of people filled the church, crowded together in the old black pews, standing closely thronged in the nave and aisles, pressing shoulder to shoulder even in the two chapels on the right and left of the apse, a vast gathering of pale men and women whose eyes were sad and in whose faces was written the history of their nation. The mighty shafts and pilasters of the Gothic edifice rose like the stems of giant trees in a primeval forest from a dusky undergrowth, spreading out and uniting their stony branches far above in the upper gloom. From the clerestory windows of the nave an uncertain light descended halfway to the depths and seemed to float upon the darkness below as oil upon the water of a well. Over the western entrance the huge fantastic organ bristled with blackened pipes and dusty gilded ornaments of colossal size, like some enormous kingly crown long forgotten in the lumber room of the universe, tarnished and overlaid with the dust of ages. Eastwards, before the rail which separated the high altar from the people, wax torches, so thick that a man might not span one of them with both his hands, were set up at irregular intervals, some taller, some shorter, burning with steady, golden flames, each one surrounded with heavy funeral wreaths, and each having a tablet below it, whereon were set forth in the Bohemian idiom, the names, titles, and qualities of him or her in whose memory it was lighted. Innumerable lamps and tapers before the side altars and under the strange canopied shrines at the bases of the pillars, struggled ineffectually with the gloom, shedding but a few sickly yellow rays upon the pallid faces of the persons nearest to their light..."

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Cruel power, cruel powerlessness By Wirkman Virkkala Crawford was an able novelist -- indeed, a very good novelist -- from the 19th century. He was a romanticist, best known for his series of Italian novels, starting with Saracinesca, one of his best books. He also wrote several fantasies, the best of them being Khaled: An Arabian Tale. This book, The Witch of Prague, is far more bizarre, a true work of a prolix and weird imagination. It is certainly not to everybody's taste. Many readers will find the author's tendency to wax eloquent on the culture and mindscape of his time, or the book's place (Prague), a bit tedious. I did not. Crawford may be, by contemporary standards, periphrastic; but by 19th century standards he was the very soul of concision. The characters are by no means realistic: they are romantic, gothic creations. The Wanderer, the central character, has no name throughout the novel; he is simply called The Wanderer. He is searching for his true love, Beatrice. He is captured by Unorna, the witch of the book's title. And he meets a wizard, Keyork Arabian, and Unorna's hapless suitor, Israel Kafka. At one point the witch places a spell on her admirer, using a scene from Czech history, that is so shocking that the author had to place a footnote at the beginning of the chapter to justify the inclusion of the incident. The event is doubly shocking today, since it could be so easily used by anti-Semites; but the author insists the referenced event -- the crucifiction, by his family, of a young Jewish convert to Christianity -- really did happen in the history of the city in question, Prague. The witchcraft of Unorna is mainly that of a super-mesmerism. She can instantly control people, and provide them with a completely altered sense of perception, even reality. But still, with all that power, she cannot have the man she wants. This is the moral heart of the book, and as such it places the book among the higher ranks of fantasy. Power is cruel. But powerlessness seems even more cruel, to her.(Note: this review is based on another edition of this book; I own only 19th century editions of this work, and cannot describe with accuracy the presentation or the included matter in the current edition.)

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Victorian Era Horror By Amazon Customer These stories show their age, but are well written and mildly horrific in a staid Victorian way. If you like Saki or M. R. James then you should enjoy these stories ( a novella and several short stories including a horror classic, "The Upper Berth").

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Unusual work By David Mills The title is slightly misleading because whether Unorna, the central character, is a really a witch is debatable. She is someone with a strange and difficult past who has mastered hypnotism to the point of mysticism. She uses her powers in collaboration with Keyork Arabian, a researcher of sorts, and for her own gain: an intense love for The Wanderer, who has arrived in Prague searching for a lost love, Beatrice. F. Marion Crawford, a forgotten writer popular a century ago, effectively describes this historic city in its more intriguing and shadowy aspects, even taking us to Prague's ancient Jewish cemetery, where Unorna uses hypnotism to conjure up images to torment her tormented admirer, Israel Kafka. Here, however, is (especially today) the book's major flaw: there is definite anti-semitism in Crawford's description of Bohemian and other Jews, stereotyping them as an avaricious and sometimes vicious race. That his descriptions of the Jewish quarter are well-worded makes all this disappointing (also, perhaps, inaccurate: that area was being razed in the era the book is set in). Crawford often departs from his narrative to dwell on hypnotism, psychology, and the human condition in general. His writing is rather wordy by today's standards, but quite readable. In sum, a notable work in the canon of the unusual.

Excerpt from Three Thousand Years, of Mental HealingThe present decade has experienced an intense interest in mental healing. This has come as a culmination of the development along these lines during the past half century. It has shown itself in the beginning of new religious sects with this as Si, or the, fundamental tenet, in more wide-spread general movements, and in the scientific study and application of the principles underlying this form of therapeutics. Many have been led astray because, being ignorant of the mental healing movements and vagaries of the past, the late applications, veiled in metaphysical or religious verbiage, have seemed to them to be new in origin and principle. No one could consider an historical survey of the subject and reasonably hold this opinion. It is on account of the ignorance of similar movements, millenniums old, that so much, if any, originality can be credited to the founders. The object of this volume is to present a general view of mental healing, dealing more especially with the historical side of the subject.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By Daisy S This is a very detailed read, however, if you want to learn how healing was performed in many ways such as relics, rituals, charms, healers, and so many ways over the past 3,000 years plus, this is the book to consider. For me, I am on a healing journey and also love to study history. This book is just what I was looking for being the history buff that I am. So even though this book went into great detail it was never boring for me.* If you are into history and love to read, I will highly suggest this book for you. If you are looking for a shorter book on more modern day natural healing, this may not be the best book for you.Still for the price paid (0.00), it is a great read!

“Hard Knocks of Love” by Azitej Anand is the story about the pursuit of happiness and love on the one side, than on the other side it marks its excellence by the theme of duly tribute and sacrifice. The pursuit of Margret’s happiness by Dave and Racy suffuses the fabrication of different tragedy across the story. Hard knocks of love illuminate the essence of love tragedy, which seeks the attention of readers towards each and every aspect that fuses the mind with the feeling of catharsis. The birth scene, love scene, suicidal scene and a profound love between a brother and sister is so perfectly highlighted in the story. Tribute of Racy is the core touching part of the whole story.

Shortly after Pearl Harbor, the military is clamoring to send all Japanese on the West Coast, citizens and non citizens, to concentration camps in the interior. The basis is military necessity but the true reason is racism and war hysteria. The legal system is tested and fails. The scene then shifts to France where the Jews are being persecuted by racist laws enacted by the Vichy government and enforced by both the French police and courts. The story is told through the experiences of a French born American lawyer who is witness to the failure of both judicial systems. He risks his career and reputation to defend a Japanese American who is going to be sent to a concentration camp, and then his life when he enlists and returns to France as a spy. It is a story of survival and ultimately hope but it is also a cautionary tale that warns when national security is threatened, the constitution is just a scrap of paper.

About the Author Jules Bonjour has been a criminal defense attorney in the San Francisco Bay area for forty nine years. In this, his first novel, he draws upon his many years defending those who have suffered discrimination and prejudice to write about the injustices that Japanese Americans experienced after Pearl Harbor and the Jews suffered in Vichy France after France fell to the Germans in 1940. He was born in 1939, the son of a Swiss immigrant who came to the United States in the late 19th century. He has a B .S. from Northwestern University, a Masters in Political Science from U.C. Berkeley, and after a brief stint in the army, he returned to UC to attend law school and received a JD in 1966. He is married and has three 3 children and eight grandchildren. He lives in Berkeley near the Claremont Hotel and the UC campus and is still an active criminal defense attorney.

A Suspenseful Historical Novel with Present Day Critical Importance By Goughlaw There are historians, there are novelists and there are those talented writers who can weave fiction with history and create a suspenseful tale that rests solidly upon historical fact. Jules Bonjour has done just that in his novel, War and Betrayal. In Book One, Bonjour's protagonist, Jean-Claude, a young trial attorney, risks his career by challenging President Roosevelt's unconstitutional executive order, issued shortly after Pearl Harbor, that authorized the relocation and imprisonment of 110,000 innocent Japanese residents, including Japanese American citizens living in the West Coast states. Although the relocation occurred nearly 75 years ago and might be considered by some as ancient history, Book One so vividly exposes the injustice of the relocation that any reader with a sense of what is right and just will be outraged just as I was, exclaiming, "How did we let that happen? Bonjour explains how that happened, how racism and war hysteria overcame justice and law, and turned the Constitution into, as Bonjour puts it, "a scrap of paper."Book Two follows Jean-Claude to the European theater of the war. This time it is not his career that is at risk, but his life. Again, Bonjour's thorough research creates a solid foundation for the action and danger that surround Jean-Claude.When I finished the book and laid it aside, I felt that not only had I enjoyed an excellent read, but had learned a lot of history of those war years and was reminded just how vigilant we must be to protect our Constitution and human rights against encroachment in times of fear and hysteria. Unfortunately, these times are with us again--witness the abuses of the NSA's warrantless surveillance.Bonjour gives us good crisp writing and an excellent and believable development of Jean-Claude's character. Bonjour leaves us with Jean-Claude back in America, and leaves the reader wanting to read more about him. Perhaps there will be a sequel. I hope so.Kerry Gough

By Steven Burchik Set against the background of the entry of the US into World War II, this story is a fast-paced novel about a California attorney who tries to defend his Japanese friend’s family from being placed in an internment camp. Jean-Claude Bonnay sets off on his David and Goliath struggle against the popular majority and the US government itself as he pursues a reasoned approach to the protections of the Constitution. He soon finds himself in an even murkier situation as he winds up as an underground agent in German-occupied France. The adventure continues throughout the war, with Jean-Claude’s language skills (French & German) aiding him in his work with the resistance. Eventually he winds up at the liberation of Dachau and is asked to use his legal skills to prepare for the trials of the men who ran the camp. He cannot help but note the parallels between Japanese-Americans held in US camps and Jews held in German camps. The story is well told and the reader will enjoy the rapid flow of danger and adventure. If there is any blemish in the story it might be a tendency to resolve big problems or difficult issues too quickly or too easily. Smoother transitions might have been more logical, but might have slowed the flow of the story. While this book refers to events that occurred more than seventy years ago, the book is very timely as current events are again forcing us to address the question of protecting the rights of minority groups who are viewed as a threat to the safety of the country as a whole. This reason alone makes this book a worthwhile investment of time.

Rien War and Betrayal, is a historical novel that tracks both the callous internment of Japanese-American citizens in the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor as well as the resistance movement in Vichy France. It is a story of governmental betrayal of its citizenry as seen through the eyes of a criminal defense lawyer, Jean-Claude, whose quotidian work seems to prefigure this larger governmental abuse. He risks all to defend a friend and detainee. With the outbreak of war, and his father’s departure to fight for his native France, Jean-Claude enlists in the military, where he hopes to be assigned to an underground unit charged with giving support to the French resistance—and where he might reunite with his father.Major Longacre, in his welcoming address to the new underground recruits in London, warns that, “You will have to compromise the values you have cherished your entire life because the success of the mission is what is important above all.”It is true. All ascend, but no one manages to hold high ground. The Major’s imperative turns out to be the blind rationale for the establishment of internment and concentration camps. Ultimately, everyone is a betrayer, the Vichy, Governor Warren and President Roosevelt, Jean-Claude’s new wife, Stephanie, her father, and finally, Jean-Claude himself. The Resistance scenes are especially pleasurable, particularly those involving the underground fighter Chantel, who like Maria for Robert Jordon in For Whom the Bell Tolls, complicates the protagonist, Jean-Claude, in profound ways. The dialogue, too, bears the unmistakable, spare muscularity of Hemingway’s prose.Jules Bonjour’s meticulously researched and deeply felt novel is a wonderful and necessary read.

Sword of the Mogul (Empire and Honor Book 3), by Harold R. Thompson

About the Author

Harold Thompson was born at the end of the 1960s and grew up in the prog rock era, surrounded by the music of Genesis, Pink Floyd, and Yes. His favourite TV shows as a child were the original Star Trek, freshly syndicated Gilligan’s Island, and Space: 1999.

He studied neuroscience and cognitive psychology, running two independent labs for his honours degree program (a sort of mini-Masters). He had his eye on med school but at some point made a left turn and ended up in law school. That was a critical decision, because his dislike of law school caused him to quit to become a “serious” writer. Within five months, he had sold a short story and two non-fiction articles, and in October 1994, he wrote the first draft of Dudley’s Fusiliers, the first book in the best-selling Empire and Honor series.

Thompson’s love of history stems from his work with Parks Canada at the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site in his home town of Halifax, Nova Scotia. In his current position, he creates interpretive programming for visitors to the site.

He is also an avid amateur filmmaker and founded his own studio, Rec Room Movies, in 2007. Rec Room Movies has actually produced several real films, short pieces for Parks Canada, but is most proud of its no-budget feature A Tale of Bloody Creek.

Thompson continues to write short science fiction and historical fiction in his spare time. He lives with his family in Nova Scotia.

Great third book which continues Dudley's adventure By Damon Barley Really loved Mr Thompson's previous books, never reading about the Crimean war, and thus gaining some insight into the conflict. After finishing this book after buying this a week ago, I absolutely did not realize time was passing when reading this. Good amount of drama mixed with the military action that Dudley is known for. A great work and a must read, you really won't regret it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Nice read, military practice a little short. By steven eldred This book is a good read. Thompson does a good job describing the people, location and cultures at work. He tells an entertaining story, and I will look forward to other works by this author. Militarily, he falls a little short. Two of his principal characters hold leadership positions (Colour Sgt and Ensign, or 2d lieutenant). In both cases the characters seem to be spectators to the battlefield action. Any soldier can tell you that the prime activity of leaders at that level are troop accountability (where are they, do they have their equipment, do they know what to do?) and situational awareness (where is my unit in relation to other units?). Thompson's characters are lacking in these critical elements, and it detracts from the story. It is not that the character is intended to be portrayed as weak, inexperienced or less than competent. It is apparent that the writer doesn't understand the duties of the character in that situation. From Caesar's Legions to modern drone-led infantry squads, some jobs haven't changed. This writer just doesn't know them.

By jkiac I really liked this book. after reading the entire series (so far) i think this is the best yet. the main characters are better developed and honestly easier to root for. the later chapters started to drag a bit with the authors attempt to provide us with a too complete picture of all the military engagements. its always a difficult balance- historical accuracy versus "adventure" so i only subtracted a half star for that but the other half star came from the main character turning down the modern equivalent of billions of dollars. i don't want to divulge any details but simple state that it surpassed belief. completely out of character not only for this protagonist but pretty much any normal human being in any century.
