Indigo Quilts: 30 Quilts from the Poos Collection - History of Indigo - 5 Projects, by Kay Triplett, Lori Lee Triplett

Review This excellent mix of history and quilt projects is the Triplett sisters' third book based off the Poos Collections, a large, privately held gathering of quilts and textiles managed by the authors. The sisters chose to focus on indigo, because, they claim, blue is the most popular color, and indigo is "the king of that color." Through most research focuses on India's role in Indigo cultivation, the Tripletts instead pay honorable–thought admittedly circumstantial–attention to Africa's links to the dye. The first section addresses transfer of indigo dye to the Americas beginning in the late 15th century, carried by people whom the Portuguese enslaved for the their knowledge of growing indigo and weaving indigo textiles. The second section highlights antique quilts from the Poos Collection, an album including a gorgeous pieced quilt with intricate feather stitching and a LeMoyne Star block quilt with quilted flowers skillfully stitched with "ghost" blocks. The Tripletts' style is scholarly and readable; the pictures are stunning and seductive, and the book finishes off with five indigo design projects for the mid-level-to-expert quilter. (Publishers Weekly, October 5, 2015)Sisters Kay and Lori Lee are curator and business manager, respectively, for the Poos Collection, one of the world's largest collections of historic quilts. In their third book about the collection, their focus is on historic indigo quilts, as well as the African tradition of indigo cultivation and dyeing that was brought to the United States both by African traders and explorers and by slaves captured from their West African homelands. An extensive historical overview provides information about African textiles and the spread of indigo dyeing in early America, followed by a gallery of 19th-century quilts from the Poos Collection. The quilts feature indigo-dyed fabrics as a focal point, and include appliqué, pieced, and mixed designs. Quilters interested in re-creating similar quilts will find a selection of five designs for both pieced and appliqué quilts, with traceable templates for the appliqué motifs included on a pullout. VERDICT Historical quilt enthusiasts will appreciate the depth of the Tripletts' research on the history of indigo dyeing; contemporary quilters who appreciate reproduction quilts will enjoy the gallery and the patterns. (Library Journal, November 1, 2015)I usually steer clear of commenting on books about African-American quilting and apparent affinities with aspects of African textiles as it is a controversial topic that, to be honest, doesn't directly impact on my own interest in understanding more about the history of West African textiles themselves. However this welcome book by quilt and textile collectors Kay and Lori Lee Triplett breaks new ground by looking instead to the indigo fabric used in making the quilts and a detailed, archive research based, exploration of the role of African-American slaves and ex-slaves in the early production of indigo resist dyed cloth in the Americas. This is preceded by a stimulating overview of the history of indigo dyeing within West Africa, and illustrated with both West African textiles and a selection of remarkable antique indigo and white quilts from their collection. (Duncan Clarke adireafricantextiles.blogspot.co.uk, 1/14/16)Two members of the American Quilt Study Group present 25 beautiful blue and white quilts from one of the world's largest privately held collections of antique quilts, the Poos Collection (named for Martha Poos, a quilter from Lancaster, Kansas). They also recount the history of indigo, the dye produced by the Indigofera tinctoria plant that has its origins in Africa, African textiles and how indigo was brought to the Americas by the slaves ships in the 15th century. This book is mainly about the history of blue and white quilts and textiles, but it includes patterns for five quilts: three appliquéd and two pieced. A beautiful book for lovers of antique quilts! (Down Under Quilts, Issue 174)See a private collection of 25 stunning antique quilts. Learn about the history of indigo quilts. Explore 5 great projects inspired by them. Like many who love textiles of all descriptions, I am fascinated by indigo. It is my favourite colour. This book explores indigo in Africa and America plus a quilt album and quilt projects. Each of the antique quilts has an information panel and focusses on the pattern such as oak leaf, cherry baskets etc. The quilts are from the 1800s and 1900s and are separated as to technique such as applique, pieced etc. The designs are fabulous and the photography is excellent. The projects come with full instructions and full-size templates. Anyone with an interest in indigo, quilts and their history and those looking to replicate historical quilts would be interested in this fabulous book. (yarnsandfabrics.co.uk, 3/11/16)Indigo Quilts by Kay and Lori Lee Triplett, a wonderful reference for learning about indigo fabrics, is divided into three sections: the history of indigo, quilts from the Poos Collection, and projects using indigo fabrics. Indigo can refer to a dye, a process, and a type of fabric. First, there is an informative and beautifully illustrated section on the history of indigo dyes and techniques for making indigo resists. Indigo, known in Africa since the Stone Age, was used in past centuries in India and Europe, spread to the Americas in the colonial period, and is still popular today. Second, the book includes a Quilt Album of 30 indigo quilts from the Poos Collection, one of the largest privately owned quilt collections in the world - curated and managed by the authors. It is known for its pre-1860 quilts and worldwide textile collection. The predominately blue and white quilts, all from the 1800s, show an impressive variety of traditional quilt blocks and degree of skill. The authors' historical notes on each quilt's fabrics, construction, and quilting are enlightening. (Ann connectingthreads.com)

Fascinating, and every person who's ever worn denim should read it. I'm happy to have a quilt from my own collection in the book, pg. 36 & 38, and it's such an honor to be included in the book. I'm learning a lot from it. Highly recommended! Congratulations to Kay and Lori Lee, and kudos to C&T Publishing for an exceptional book!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful, Gritty, and Emotionally Impacting By LD This book was different in that it depicted prior events (from the previous books) all shown through the eyes of the Agocii nation. At first I thought, “Wait—that villain is dead!” Then I realized I was being shown the “other side” of what happened in R.J. Larson’s other books. When I read it with that understanding, it was intriguing to see an entirely different world of events and characters. I absolutely adored the main characters—I was SO attached to them! I was also horrified by some of the pagan rituals as well as the pressures these people were forced to go through. But I was utterly enraptured by the wonderful characters who rose to the top, despite overwhelming adversity. The ending was definitely heart-crushing, and it took me a while to get over it. Yet, it seared on my heart immense respect for God—we should never bargain with Him or make vows to Him. My whole prayer life has changed…instead of begging/demanding specific things from God, I humbly ask for His will to be done. I don’t know what’s best (even if I’m sure I do), but I can’t see the resulting consequences of the outcome—so I need to let God be the Infinite, Wise, One-Who-Sees-All, and let Him decide. When pondering my deep emotional reaction to the story, I realized that R.J. Larson did an exceptional job of writing *another* incredible book—I was just personally disappointed that everything didn’t fall perfectly into place. But isn’t that real life? She writes a beautiful, gritty, emotionally-impacting, and unforgettable story. It’s beautiful and exciting, but it’s not a fairy tale—it’s real life.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The love of the Infinite By Robin D R.J. Larson does it again. Valor is captivating from beginning to end, tackling a sometimes perplexing Judges 11 within the realm of the Agocci and other nations in this fantasy realm. I cheered, cried, and sometimes even wanted to shake characters by turns. I can't help but admire Aniya, particularly approaching the climax and the end of the book (trying very hard to avoid spoilers here). The more I read, and re-read, R.J. Larson's books (starting with the Books of the Infinite Series), the more I find where she has explored passages, verses, themes, and stories from the Old Testament. The love of the Infinite , One-Who-Sees, is clear throughout.Inspirational Fantasy is an apt description. R.J. Larson is an artist with words. I swear there is a secret plot-line map and multple spreadsheets running, as all of these books are intricately interwoven. That said, you can still read just one and enjoy the story. However, to borrow a advertising tagline, Bet you cant [read] just one. If you've never picked up one of her books, I urge you to try. I believe you won't regret it.One of my "tests" for a good book, is its re-readability. (Fresh each time, enough depth to keep teasing out more story and get to know the characters even better, enjoying the read each time, etc.) R. J. Larson's books have that in spades!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Classic War Fantasy By Kim Robinson This is the last in the series. I enjoyed the obvious biblical parallels, the dramatic descriptions, the challenges the characters wrestled with. This story deals with how various cultures define what is divine, what is honorable, and what is reprehensible. I enjoyed how the Invisible made Himself visible, and revealed that only He was really God. The characters have to deal with prophecies, family expectations, cultural pressures and personal choices throughout in struggles familiar to all who enjoy this kind of fantasy. I loved how the outcasts were brought back in and how the characters were challenged to forgive those who were cowardly or who had failed. The book is well named.

I reread them (as I do most things I really like) fairly regularly, and prefer the digital for traveling. If I'm home, I'll just grab the book ... the world and character Davis has created are alive and well, just an awful long time ago.

In this installment Falco writes a play and rewrites a few others, solves a murder and meets the father of comedy. Wit and banter flow throughout. Read it. I couldn't put it down.

I'm going to get the next one. The previous books in the series were better. So maybe this was just a fluke.

In order to understand "Heart of a Roman," we must first understand Rome. Over two thousand years ago, the Romans conquered lands on both sides of the Mediterranean Sea, establishing and maintaining one of the world's largest empires, from the Middle East to North Africa to Northern Europe. Their bravery, courage determination, aggressive nature, intelligence, and leadership abilities displayed the true "Heart of a Roman. " This book is based on true stories from the streets of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It describes the urban nightmare of young lives at risks, and modern day warriors fighting each other for a sense of self-worth and for survival in the brutal, underground world.

Ignore History and Be Doomed to Repeat It By Elizagape This juxtaposition of Baton Rouge gangsta lifestyle with features of the early Roman Empire highlights a desperate and despairing need for honor, dignity and self-worth. The writing is as raw and real as the tragic lives it describes; readers should expect to be plunged headlong and without mercy into the center of violence, drugs and heartbreak: the cement you land on is very hard. . .no editorial mitigation, here, and in fact the only hesitation in giving this five stars is in some editorial lapses that fail to connect or adequately support the narrative flow. Overall, a compelling read for anyone brave enough to ask some very hard questions; and maybe search for even more elusive answers.

Class of '67: Fancies, Myths and Follies: These ten stories focus on people who came of age during the turbulent years of the latter 1960s. The events in this collection cover the years from the early sixties when most of the characters were children to the turn of the millennium when these same characters are in their early fifties. Readers will find here a quirky but honest look at the fancies, myths, and follies with which we surround ourselves as we age. With humor, a touch of the bizarre, and the subtle effects of a war that influenced those who fought it, as well as those who did not, these characters stumble toward the future in a world slowly moving ever closer to chaos and disorder. The collection is unified by the fascinating "back story" of Finch and Lauren, and their relationship over a forty-five year period. The ins and outs, ups and downs of this long-term love affair are all here among the bizarre events, the humor, the sadness, and the joy of a journey from the early nineteen sixties into a new millennium.

By Barb Massabrook The fabulous and wonderful USA Today best selling Scottish historical author has done it again with another brilliant and wonderful new serie, called Highland Wars. This is the third book in this series and it is absolutly riveting! So hold onto you seat and what a great ride is is! Game on.....the epic battle continues.Medievial Scotland, Western IslesThis story surrounds Ceana MacRae and Macrath Mor who both fought hard and won at the Bloody War Games and now have the current title as Prince and Princess of Sitheil which they are only allowed to keep for five years Now the story continues, as Ceana and Macrath are just married and given only five years to hold on to their tiles which seems unfair for all the sweat blood and tears they had to suffer just to get the title yet it not permanent . Now they want to go after those in charge of the Games, the corrupt council but seems like they seem to have enemies at every corner whether present, past or future!Seems hopeless yet the future of Scotland, their love as well as well as their very lives are at stake! With the onset of spring in Sudrland, alliances of love and loyalty have shifted and settled. Eirik resides with his wife, Asta, at Cairnby Manor, but keeps his consort, Alison--dream-traveler from the twentieth century--tucked away at a nearby cottar's cottage. While Asta understands her husband's relationship with Alison, Eirik's brother, Sigmus, accuses Alison of witchery. And despite his own betrothal, Sigmus not so secretly covets and pursues Asta. Circumstances are further complicated when matriarch, Britna, proposes that her sons return her skraeling lover to his desert home--the surprising condition, that she goes too. As sails are set for another voyage, betrayal and desire become undercurrents aboard the ships, and when seas turn stormy the arduous journey threatens to be their last great adventure. In four-book series, Susan Schaffner merges the mythology and lore of Medieval Viking and the tribal peoples of Sonora, Mexico, sweeping readers off on a journey through eight hundred years of adventure and romance. From the placid waters of the Sea of Cortez to the storm-ridden North Atlantic, the two cultures collide and intertwine to create a compelling saga

By Debbie Grove Where Book Two, A Journey in Kind: Viking Blood was centered on the characters relocating to Sudrland ( Scotland ) and dealing with clan politics and deceit, Return From Afar: A Viking’s Fate casts the Sigmusson Brothers and their ladies, Alison and Asta, on a return voyage to the mysterious desert isle. But from the beginning the voyage is doomed. Eirik and Sigmus knock heads and animosity runs high. Personal conflict is nothing next to circumstances that catapult into dangerous life threatening situations. In America, at their Vinland camp, skraeling wait in the dark depths of the forest to steer the pair off course. The diversion sends them on an epic chase. Blood and death run over the land until miraculously, thanks to the women, they are back on their ships, destination Tiburon Island. The plot takes unexpected turns, secrets are revealed, and heavy doses of magic guide the characters as well as the reader through an imaginative tale that transports back into the world of the Vikings. Don’t let anyone spoil the ending! It’s a total surprise. Can’t wait to see where the author takes me next.

By kristeen lester Return from Afar: A Viking’s Fate, is the third book in an entertaining series set in the twelfth century and the early twentieth. Blending Viking culture with Native American mythology the unique saga has captured my interest from the beginning. In this third installment, there is more of everything. More family drama. More betrayal between the brothers. More revelations, more action and adventure as the characters return to sea on a journey to end their travels into the new world.I was amazed by the plot twists and surprises-which I won't reveal. The skillful writing and rich descriptions of people and places, make the novel come alive. And the final chapter delivers a real punch to the fascinating story. I cannot wait to read the fourth book. Where it will lead me, I don't know, but it's sure to be as captivating as the other three. I highly recommend the series.

Volume 3 of ‘The Neville Burton - Worlds Apart Series’: British Navy in the Romantic Age of Sail When British Navy Lieutenant Neville Burton climbed the accommodation ladder of the 74-gun Royal Navy ship HMS Elephant in June of 1801, his thoughts were of his deceased lover, not of his duty waiting at the top of the ladder. Depressed and discouraged, he was not ready for the treachery that would soon face him at the hands of the ship’s First Lieutenant. Grief surrounds him. Neither were his thoughts on another facet of his service to the Admiralty – a mission of international intrigue. ‘Something always presents itself’’, he’s told by his contact and mentor in Whitehall, when he complains of having no idea how to accomplished the task. The seemingly simple process of getting home to England or serving normal naval duties are not in his cards. The winds of change and the vagaries of battle soon conspire to send him to unusual duties for British Navy officers during the Napoleonic Wars – from Denmark to the North Coast of Africa and on into enemy France itself. Lieutenant Burton combines his courage, resourcefulness, and luck to escape capture when his mission is discovered, only to find himself conscripted into other dangerous duty: inshore action in the ports of Spain. Burton’s happy arrival home in England is met with a new twist of his fate: his mentor, Sir William Mulholland, asks his further compliance to continue the mission that began in France. The theater of operation is now Jamaica, however – a place that Burton knows well, but which holds a heavy place in his heart. When he sails there, it is to serve aboard another third-rate ship of the line, the 74-gun HMS Vanguard. His new platform affords him an opportunity to participate in the capture and sharing of prize ships and to begin calculating how he might accomplish his mentor’s mission, the investigation of a possible spy. Ashore, an unexpected meeting marks another potential turning point in his life. He encounters Marion Stillwater, a beautiful young girl who is remarkably similar to his lost love. Is another romance, another affair of the heart, even possible so soon after the other? The encounter is sweet, but short, and Burton is recalled to duty. For the second time, he is offered the opportunity to accept a command in Port Royal Bay, and his acceptance bestows upon him the rank of Master and Commander of a prize ship: the unrated schooner Superieure. With this promotion, the dreams of a young officer seem to be achieved – at least until he begins to see who is coming aboard to man his ship… the dregs of humanity from other ships of the fleet. The seeds of mutiny are sown, but his exploits in Jamaica are not complete. Simply being a Commander does not solve problems – only serves up more peril. Sent to find and discourage the ever-present pirates of the Caribbean on Jamaica’s northern shore, the smell of mutiny hangs in the air. Georges Carrack serves up the detail of sailing of square-rigged ships into war along with accuracy of historical situation, all enhanced by description from the author’s personal experience at sea. His style and stories should appeal to followers of Patrick O-Brian's Aubrey-Maturin Series or C. S. Forester's "Horatio Hornblower". Take a look inside History – Naval – Fiction – early 19th Century

The action scenes are realistic, as is the on-again-off-again courtship of Neville and Marion. The time-travel element to which I previously objected is pretty much all gone (although I haven't quite finished and who knows what might happen in the last few pages?). Unlike other books in this price range, the proof reading was done well, although there is one puzzling reference that seems to have sneaked by. I would definitely purchase and read the fifth in the series, if there ever is one.

The author keeps referring to the Danish as Dutch! If the reader does not have some knowledge of history she or he would be greatly confused. The Dutch had no part in this battle. The only thing they had in common was the "D" at the beginning of their names. I am not sure if I will finish this series. Good editing should stop these kinds of mistakes.

Book 4 (which was published before Book 3) contradicts certain plot points in Book 3. The author obviously either had no overarching plan for the two novels or decided to take a second crack at the story line in Book 3. Each story was pretty good by itself, but confusing as a series.

A Mountain Man's Redemption, by Christi Corbett

About the Author Christi Corbett, winner of the 2013 RONE Award for Best American Historical novel and the 2014 Laramie Award (First in Category for Pioneer/Prairie fiction), lives in a small town in Oregon with her husband and their twin children. The home's location holds a special place in her writing life; it stands just six hundred feet from the original Applegate Trail and the view from her back door is a hill travelers looked upon years ago as they explored the Oregon Territory and beyond.

By Barbara Brutschy When Christi told me she was writing a book about a woman in an abusive relationship, I couldn’t imagine any way she would be able to do that. Her stories are about people with strong moral character in pursuit of their dreams; who overcome difficulty with courage and find romance somewhere along the way.I know a thing or two about abusive people and their targets, having made it the focus of my studies at seminary. They are not romantic, and not entertaining to read about. Or so I thought. Her story took me on a roller coaster ride from calm anticipation through fear, sadness, tension, anxiety, anger and – total surprise – romance and laughter. Amazing. All the hallmarks of Christi’s work are in this book – her standards for clean writing and her belief in a code of honor that demands integrity from her main characters, along with the ability to create scenes that feel more real than imagined.Christi – you nailed it. This is your best work yet

By Amazon Customer As with all of Christi's books you can tell the amount of time, research and hard work that goes into making her stories as accurate as possible. A Mountain Man's Redemption is about Phillip, a fur trapper in Montana set in the 1880's. As Phillip is on his way to make the last trade of the season, he comes across a young mother and her baby. Will he risk everything that he's worked so hard for in order to help them, or will he leave them to find their own way?The story moves at a good pace and keeps the reader interested and also has a little suspense. Although it's not a book with Romantic love, the love really pours off the pages. This is a great heart warming story and I loved it!!This novella deals with the tough subject of abuse. I hope that if someone reads this and find that it speaks to them, that they get help. No one deserves to be made to feel less than wonderful.

Good Reading By LAS Reviewer A fur-trapper who lives on his own in the Montana wilderness during the winter of 1886 is best served when he has only himself to worry about for survival, but when Philip Grant comes across an unexpected duo in need of help, he must decide whether to put his own life on the line to save them, or walk away.Philip has had a good haul for a fur-trapper this season, but he soon finds himself with only ten days left to get his furs to the nearest fort, more than eighty miles away. It will be a difficult journey, which must be made quickly. But before long, he finds himself challenged with more than just time and distance. The reader will learn that Philip has his own demons in life to battle, but none more urgent that Hannah whom he discovers battered and beaten and clutching a baby in the middle of a harsh winter. Slowly and out of necessity, Hannah begins to explain the circumstances that have driven her, literally, out into the snow without proper gear for herself or her baby. With Philip’s continued prompting, the young mother confides in the fur-trapper, telling a heartbreaking story of abuse by her husband.Wife abuse is not your average storyline in a historic novel, but maybe we should see it more often. The story is built upon a strong faith, and is historically accurate. It shows us that what we believe to be a modern problem is not at all. The reader gets a vastly different perspective in this well-written story. This is a quick read, which is what brings me to my only criticism of the story. In the story’s beginning, Philip discovers a quilt in the snow-covered woods, and although we already know he is behind schedule and has an urgent need to get to Fort Matiley before it closes, which involves crossing “the most rugged mountain peaks in Montana,” he moves far too slowly. He spends too much time deciding whether to find out what’s inside the mysterious quilt. There were a few other points in the story where I felt things needed to move more quickly, given the urgency, too. With that said, this story was nearly flawless in its delivery. If you’re looking for historical fiction, or a story with a 1880s flare, and the theme of a battered woman won’t deter you, then this is a story worth your time.originally posted at long and short reviews

Excerpt from The Witchcraft Delusion in Colonial Connecticut: 1647-1697The true story of witchcraft in old Connecticut has never been told. It has been hidden in the ancient records and in manuscripts in private collections, and those most conversant with the facts have not made them known, for one reason or another. It is herein written from authoritative sources, and should prove of interest and value as a present-day interpretation of that strange delusion, which for a half century darkened the lives of the forefathers and foremothers of the colonial days.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. from the horse's mouth By Linda Pagliuco This little book is not so much written, as compiled, by the author. John Taylor, in the earliest years of the 20th century, painstakingly combed through local town records (written by hand in that faded ink and all-but-undecipherable old script) from the 17th century. He provided an enormous service to historians by extracting and printing any and all documentation pertaining to the the subject of witchcraft in Connecticut Colony, and is credited for discovering the name and place of residence of the first woman to be executed as a witch, Alse (Alice) Young of Windsor. The value of Taylor's service cannot be underestimated, and this volume is absolutely essential to the study of this tragic but fascinating slice of American history.

Reflections about Life in Solitary Retirement By Raymond Banner The Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft by George Gissing is part novel, partautobiography and partly a book of brief essays or reflections on various subjects. The book was published in 1903, the year that Gissing died. It presents a mellowedcynical author who after a difficult life spent mostly in London is given a legacy of anannual annuity which enables him to retire in solitude to a country cottage in Devoncounty, England. Here he writes down his reflections ranging from the philosophicalmeaning of life to comments on simple daily life. There is much about reading, books andauthors (Holbrook Jackson in his The Anatomy of Bibliomania has many references toGeorge Gissing). There are comments about nature walks in the country, memories ofpast events in London, visits to special places. There is discussion of English culture, customs and even of culinary arts. Gissing was not a Christian but in this book he shares agenerally positive view of the influence of Christianity on England. He had in his own lifealso found solace in the Stoic philosophers, particularly Marcus Aurelius. My ownpersonal copy of this book is the Oxford University Press 1987 paperback edition in theirWorld's Classics series, with editorial notes by Mark Storey. I first read the volume latein 1990 as I was looking forward to my own gradual retirement to small town life. I havejust read it again in early January 2004 with as much pleasure as I first read it.
