By Elf I could say that Promise is deceptive (but in a good sense). By that I mean that I was lulled into going along enjoying this gentle tale about a little, typically mid-America family and not catching hints about how self-destructive this guy was. And then, it all starts to unravel, and I’m dumped into an ending that’s almost painful to watch. I wanted to warn him, to steer him in another direction, to shout, but by then it’s too late. The writing is very easy to read, it’s accessible, it offers a certain amount of humor and certainly insights into human behavior, all wrapped up in one captivating read. I award five stars to this big book.

It is powerful, poignant and often humorous. The characters are well shaped. Tension builds towards the tragic ending that you never see coming. It's a splendid novel; well written and compulsively readable.
