It has to be read in that historical perspective to understand this allegorical story of growth, burgeoning independence, and romance.Plot line is a simple romantic one. Lovely, lonely Dawn is hated by her stepmother, ignored by her father and sent away to school. She narrowly escapes marriage to the villain, "accidentally" marries the villain's brother, Charles, and then scared, runs away. After many adventures, Dawn and Charles end up married and settled in a vine covered cottage. In her journey, Dawn matures and faces many adversarial challenges-becoming an independent strong woman (as much as the time period allowed!). This story is a Pilgrim's Progress for early 20th century readers.Grace's style of writing does not translate well to the 21st century readers. Flowery prose is not the sparse, terse style most modern readers are used to. I really enjoyed her descriptions--she paints with her words.I enjoyed reading this book. It transposed me to a supposedly simpler time-away from city life, smartphones, and stress.

The thrill of his touch By upfront_reader I remember encountering Grace Livingston Hill books when I was growing up and although I knew they were old then, I had no idea quite how long G.L.H. had been around. Ms. Hill's first book was published in 1877 and her last in 1949. Melodramatic and filled with strong emotion, Ms. Hill's books are all very much in the romantic tradition: Her heroines are impossibly beautiful and her heroes impossibly good, her characters are usually inspired by nature, and they often suffer at the hands of villains before finding their happy endings. "Dawn of the Morning" was published in 1911, but the story itself is set in 1824, and provides a fascinating glimpse into the America of that time. This book is billed as a Christian novel, but it does not have an overtly Christian message. The heroine and hero are undoubtedly characters of strong principles who live according to Christian precepts, but G.L.H. doesn't beat her readers over the head with her message. She chose to inspire rather than preach. Nor is the book a romance in the classic boy-meets-girl tradition. There is a love story, but the focus of the novel is Dawn's journey toward independence and self-fulfillment as she struggles to survive on her own. Though the events of the story are implausible, the book was never less than absorbing and I enjoyed reading it. Grace Livingston Hill wrote beautiful, inspiring stories and I am happy to find them available for Kindle.
