It has to be read in that historical perspective to understand this allegorical story of growth, burgeoning independence, and romance.Plot line is a simple romantic one. Lovely, lonely Dawn is hated by her stepmother, ignored by her father and sent away to school. She narrowly escapes marriage to the villain, "accidentally" marries the villain's brother, Charles, and then scared, runs away. After many adventures, Dawn and Charles end up married and settled in a vine covered cottage. In her journey, Dawn matures and faces many adversarial challenges-becoming an independent strong woman (as much as the time period allowed!). This story is a Pilgrim's Progress for early 20th century readers.Grace's style of writing does not translate well to the 21st century readers. Flowery prose is not the sparse, terse style most modern readers are used to. I really enjoyed her descriptions--she paints with her words.I enjoyed reading this book. It transposed me to a supposedly simpler time-away from city life, smartphones, and stress.

The thrill of his touch By upfront_reader I remember encountering Grace Livingston Hill books when I was growing up and although I knew they were old then, I had no idea quite how long G.L.H. had been around. Ms. Hill's first book was published in 1877 and her last in 1949. Melodramatic and filled with strong emotion, Ms. Hill's books are all very much in the romantic tradition: Her heroines are impossibly beautiful and her heroes impossibly good, her characters are usually inspired by nature, and they often suffer at the hands of villains before finding their happy endings. "Dawn of the Morning" was published in 1911, but the story itself is set in 1824, and provides a fascinating glimpse into the America of that time. This book is billed as a Christian novel, but it does not have an overtly Christian message. The heroine and hero are undoubtedly characters of strong principles who live according to Christian precepts, but G.L.H. doesn't beat her readers over the head with her message. She chose to inspire rather than preach. Nor is the book a romance in the classic boy-meets-girl tradition. There is a love story, but the focus of the novel is Dawn's journey toward independence and self-fulfillment as she struggles to survive on her own. Though the events of the story are implausible, the book was never less than absorbing and I enjoyed reading it. Grace Livingston Hill wrote beautiful, inspiring stories and I am happy to find them available for Kindle.

They are fast reads, no one will be murdered, the romance is rated G, most take place in the early 1900's up through WWII, which is the time frame that she wrote in, so if you love the era, if your a follower of Christ, looking for something for a young girl. Give her a try.

Six master assassins -- each a legend in the dark corners of international espionage -- band together to steal a fortune from the middle of a war zone. But the mission goes tragically wrong, and they retreat into the shadows.

Now THE ASSASSINS are back.

Former military spy Judd Ryder is walking to his D.C. home when he spots a man coming out of his row house who looks like Ryder and is wearing his clothes. As Ryder slows to follow, the imposter is killed in a hit-and-run that's no accident. Was the man the intended victim, or was it Ryder himself?

Soon Ryder learns that the key to the mysterious events of the past and to his double's murder is an infamous Cold War assassin, the Carnivore. Two of the last people to see the Carnivore were Ryder and CIA trainee Eva Blake, and someone is using them to lure him out.

From Washington D.C. to Marrakech and Baghdad, the assassins wage a final battle -- this time against one another -- fighting for their reputations and Saddam Hussein's long-missing billion-dollar fortune. In the end, only one can be left standing. Caught in the crossfire, Judd and Eva go on the run while desperately unraveling the tangled past and battling not only for their lives, but for their destinies.

The man is killed in a hi By Diane Saul Six master assassins stole a fortune from a war zone. But the mission didn't go as planned. Now they are working against each other and only one will survive. Former military spy Judd Walker witnesses someone coming out of his apartment who looks just like him. The man is killed in a hit and run accident. Who was the target, Judd or the imposter? Soon Judd and CIA trainee Eva Blake are in the middle of things and on the run for their lives. A Cold War Assasin may hold the key to everything and he has them in his sights. Miss Lynds has written another excellent spy thriller full of betrayal, action and enough twists and turns to keep you turning the page!

Trust me, "The Assassins" proves that she is a master at her craft. And hey, when you happen to be co-creator of "Covert-One," with Robert Ludlum, you aren't just good, you're a legend! And everybody knows it.Welcome to a new mission, a mission that screws up. These are people who know how to steal, they know how to kill, and they know how to eliminate memories. And oh yeah, don't mess with these guys in a war zone, because they live for it, and while Saddam Hussein might be a memory, it makes them giddy! Is anybody dumb enough to cross the likes of these lunatics?Well, there is such a person, and his name is Judd Ryder. There's also a lady named Eva Blake, and she's well trained. Maybe these guys are ready to take on an empire that Saddam Hussein left behind. Names like "Carnivore" will have you know that this isn't a joke, and that blood will be spilled, while rare cigars are savored!Gayle Lynds is far from a beginner, and her work with Robert Ludlum way back when proved it time and time again. "The Assassins" is hard-hitting, bone breaking, and even slightly sexy, because Gayle says so! Go out and get it.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Gayle Lynds has fashioned a terrific page-turner and summer read with THE ASSASSINS By Bookreporter Imagine if the late Iraqi dictator/leader Saddam Hussein had hired a major financier to hide his alleged fortune. Now, consider further that this financier divided the money into six sections and hired five more financiers to manage it. Furthermore, let's suppose that Hussein hired a deadly assassin --- who, in turn, hired five more assassins --- to each eliminate one of the six moneymen. If this sounds confusing, it is --- in a way. Since we're dealing with what we know fictionally of criminals and assassins, we can assume that they don't trust each other. Here lies the gist of Gayle Lynds' latest novel, THE ASSASSINS. With the death of Hussein, it is only natural that the six assassins try to put together the six pieces of his fortune and split the profits. However, when they begin eliminating each other, anything is possible. With this as the background plot to the novel, we then jump to the U.S. and former military spy Judd Ryder. Ryder is recently back from a special assignment in the Middle East. While walking to his home in Washington, D.C., he sees a man who looks to be his exact double leave a row house and shortly thereafter is killed in a hit-and-run accident.Ryder is no fool and recognizes that this is not a coincidence. He learns shortly thereafter that the mysterious doppelgänger may be linked to a Cold War assassin known as the Carnivore, a nemesis of Ryder's. Ironically, the last two people to see the Carnivore were Ryder and a CIA trainee named Eva Blake. It now appears that someone is searching for the Carnivore and may be trying to use Ryder and Blake to help locate him.Aiding Ryder in his mission to find the Carnivore is his colleague, Tucker Anderson, who is part of a CIA black unit known as Catapult and needs to go off the grid to assist Ryder. The trio of Ryder, Anderson and Blake learn that the Carnivore may be a man named Alex Bosa. There is also a possibility that he could be tied to the group of six assassins involved with the Saddam Hussein fortune.Once the Carnivore enters the story, things truly begin to roll, and the novel takes on a real feel of international intrigue. No one can be trusted or safe from each other in this dog-eat-dog world where the only winner is the person left standing at the end of the game. Gayle Lynds has fashioned a terrific page-turner and summer read with THE ASSASSINS, and created a fine group of international characters that will leave a strong impression.Reviewed by Ray Palen

Built on the premise that relationships are the most difficult of human endeavors, Promise portrays the ultimate price paid for emotional dishonesty. Lyrical and poignant, the story revolves around Dave Tackett, a seemingly placid teacher living in a small Midwestern town and haunted by past events he can't reveal. Legal actions over a fellow teacher's questionable morals awaken painful memories and trigger a searing flashback that, in turn, brings Tackett to a shocking realization of the consequences of his ethical choices. At times blunt and graphic, this accessible novel compels the reader to its disturbing and unexpected conclusion.

By that I mean that I was lulled into going along enjoying this gentle tale about a little, typically mid-America family and not catching hints about how self-destructive this guy was. And then, it all starts to unravel, and I’m dumped into an ending that’s almost painful to watch. I wanted to warn him, to steer him in another direction, to shout, but by then it’s too late. The writing is very easy to read, it’s accessible, it offers a certain amount of humor and certainly insights into human behavior, all wrapped up in one captivating read. I award five stars to this big book.

I'd have to say many people are spoiled by some of today's works in that most events are telegraphed to the reader and it ends up being like a typical action movie ... thin and unmoving. To me this book is neither. It has depth and a trio of main characters that are interesting. There are some citations that note this book is formulaic. Perhaps it needs to be taken into consideration that it was written before some of these formulas were developed.I thought The Scarlatti Inheritance was a fine read and the premise was very interestng. A mother -- Elizabeth Scarlatti -- wants to keep her evil son -- Ulster Scarlatti -- from financing the Third Reich in the 1920s. The "hero" of the novel is Matthew Canfield, a government man who is looking to find out what Ulster Scarlatti is doing with more than $200 million in securities.Ludlum does an excellent job of capturing the way people lived in the 1920s, especially the rich.

A very Interesting Read By ReadMyWay I guess I'm very late for a review of this book, since it's been out for a number of years, but I thought the novel held its own against many of the books that a significant number of the publishers and authors crank out today. Whew[...] I'm new to Robert Ludlum. I shouldn't be because I have been reading novels for 25 plus years. Anyway, I thought "The Scarlatti Inheritance" was a very interesting read. I was fascinated by the author's approach of using the character Elizabeth Scarlatti and her determination to stop her son from helping Hitler's regime. I'm not a big fan of military novels and even less of a fan when it comes to that era of Germany's power during WWII. However the author made the novel seem like I was looking at this time period from another completely different perspective and I guess that's why I found the novel very interesting. I won't go so far as to say it was a super read, but it was a good read and worthy of your time.Have a good day.

A Very Different Ludlum Novel By abusm@hotmail.com The first Ludlum novel I read was "The Matarese Circle" which made me a Ludlum fan. After reading a series of '80s Ludlum novels, the "Scarlatti Inheritance" seems somewhat strange in the making of the characters.Because this novel begins in the turn of the century and goes to 1950s.I loved the passages in which Ludlum makes his man talk to Hitler. And the last few chapters really do show how misguided we humanbeings can sometimes be.

The Murder of JFK and Mary Kelly, by Bob Lamacki

About the Author

Bob Lamacki is a natural at writing, but the daily pressures of providing for his family delayed his books. He is now writing a sequel to Fading Lights, called Falling Lights. In 2013, his son took the reins of the family’s Barrington, Illinois, trophy shop, and Lamacki began writing his first novel, Fading Lights. Fading Lights, a love story set during World War II, was a resounding success, so Lamacki focused his creative energy on his other historical fascination: the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy Jr. For fifty years, Lamacki has read and researched JFK’s death, and he hopes his new novel, The Murder of JFK and Mary Kelly, will make readers realize that there is no question that the Warren Commission did everything it could to help in the cover up.

Lamacki and his wife Melinda have been married for nearly fifty years. They have two children and four grandchildren.

By tom dioguardi Wow, what a great story, and I actually learned something about a very historic event in our Nation's history. Things that were never taught in school. The characters in this novel were wonderful ( I would love to read more about "Primo" and his adventures). I know Bob has more up his sleeve, and I cant wait. I strongly recommend this exciting and informative novel. Definetly puts a different spin on the JFK assassination, while entertaining at the same time. P.S. I am NOT a family member just someone who likes to read.

The Road to Royalty - When the destiny of the good threatens a dynasty of evil.

An arrogant egocentric king spirals Israel into spiritual defiance and political chaos.

Amid the unrest a Greek trader chases prosperity as bronze gives way to the Iron Age. He befriends an idealistic young priest and teaches him the first forms of linear writing. Together the two men witness one of the most prolific adventures of the ancient world.

As a young boy David saves Israel from slavery. The king nurses him through the ranks of his army, breeding a fearless warlord whom Israel elevates to hero status. Jealousy grips the king as David is a threat to his throne and hate drives him to plot his death. David is betrothed to the king’s daughter but their fairytale romance is tainted with blood and woven with deceit as her father manipulates circumstance. Exposed, their lives are threatened in a sequence of gripping events that plot the road they are made to endure before David is anointed to reign as Royalty.

Love, Honor, Trust

In a world where the evil of a dynasty freely unleashes the wickedness of its king, love rises above circumstance, honor above deceit, and trust is the adrenalin that runs through this heroic tale of how a shepherd boy became a king.

By Jeanie Having read the Bible and studied the word since I was a little girl, The Road to Royalty brought the story of King David to life. From the title on, I knew it was going to be a great read. I could feel the heat of the desert and the grit of sand between my teeth as if I had been transported to that time and was watching it all take place. David was the chosen one, a man of God’s heart, but he was still a “man,” one wrought with competitiveness, needs and ego, even from boyhood. Saul’s insane jealousy, Pitheus’ ideals of joining Europe and Asia with Israel as the heartbeat of power, David’s God-driven desire to be King, and, the thread which bound them all, Michel—Saul’s daughter, Pitheus’ confident and David’s true love. I could not read it fast enough, then went back to read it again. More!

An Engrossing Must-Read By Ruth This is a thoroughly captivating tale, covering two centuries, moving with incredible speed to the final unexpected ending. The many unfortunate souls, most of whom were violently captured into slavery on an estate in South Africa, are magnificently portrayed, and even include a compassionate Irish doctor who survived an 18th century British workhouse for the poor. The author's use of language is that of a very talented artist. This beautifully crafted book is unforgettable.

Excellent Read By margaret chadwick Author: Lucia MannTitle: A Veil Of Blood Hangs Over Africa: The Birthplace Of SlaveryGenre: Historical, FictionSynopsis: The grief of the newly captured slaves was overpowered only by the lecherous brutality of their master. From a humble Tswanas Kraal to an opulent South African estate, you will be held captive by Lucia Mann's interweaving stories of loss, cruelty, courage and hope. You will never forget the characters who bring this tale so vividly to life.- Mabali - Who was stolen from the comfort of her ancient homeland and forced to endure decades of agony and ruthlessness.- Nobuntu - who discovered the purity of love in the filth of a slave estate and who would ultimately give birth to zulu kings.- Shiya - The offspring of a white slave child who was forced to suffer the same indignities her mother suffered.- Nigel and Alan Hallworthy - two cruel and callous men who inherited fortune and bought protection from their evil deeds.- Brianna - Shiya's modern day heir who struggled to make sense of a history that was slowly eating away at her. This multi-generational tale takes one on a journey that starts with an encircling rope net; progresses to a filthy stifling slave ship; and ends at a rich slave estate where unthinkable acts take place. The thorny history of the birthplace of slavery comes to life with unforgettable characters yearning for liberty, meaning and justice.Review: This was an excellent read and I just couldn't bring myself to stop reading and put the book down. I am strongly against racism and slavery so it was saddening to read this book. This book outlines the true nature of slavery and how slaves were treated. It was very saddening to read how slaves were treated and that pretty much nobody cared enough to try and help them and that those who did care were disposed of by the rich and it was not investigated. Those who stood up for what was right where killed without there being any consequences. There is a mix of stories throughout this book that all interweave together. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read historical accounts of slavery and the cruelty that slaves had to endure. This is a fictional book but the cruelty shown in this book would have been real for people who were actually slaves. This book is factual in how the slaves were treated and abused by their white masters even though the characters are not real. The white masters thought that they were above the law because they were rich and could afford to pay bribes. There are many issues faced in this book such as interracial marriage(which was illegal), racism(which is still as strong today as it was then) and the apartheid which meant that there was a separation between black and white people.I would like to thank Bostick Communications and Lucia Mann for sending me this book for free for review. Bostick Communications is a company that deals with press releases and they send out free books to book reviewers so that the books and authors can gain recognition.Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

To get prepper’s pantry and keep it at home is kind of food storage and supply , but the main thing is food and water support if emergency strikes. That's really important! This book has helped me to value it differently and start this on my own.

The spectacular conclusion to the Egyptian epic begun in A God Against the Gods. After his brother’s assassination, a new Pharoah must take the throne and battle the corrupt and violent priesthood. His name is TUTANKHAMUN. Pulitzer Prize winning author Allen Drury paints a vivid, dramatic picture of the most tumultuous times in one of the greatest empires in human history. Following the murder of Akhenaten and the beautiful Nefertiti and the religious uproar that threatens to tear Egypt apart, the pharoah has to defy the gods in order to rule his people. The master writer recreates ancient Egypt with all its pomp, glory, politics, and treachery, and brings legendary titans of history to life, with all their tragic—and all too human—flaws.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Drury's Nile adventure continues in triumph By Billy J. Hobbs Following his yteur earlier "A God Against the Gods," Pulitzer-Prize winning author Allen Drury picks up, without hesitation, on his story of Akenhaten, Nefertiti, and young King Tutanhhamon. This sequel is even more mesmerizing than the earlier work. In "Return to Thebes," Drury's depiction of the Eighteenth Dynasty, its intrigues, its murders, it romantic twists--all become bared as this ill-fated kingdom struggles with vengeful opposing priests, its own family members, even, perhaps, the gods themselves. It is Akhenhaten's zeal to make The One True God (the Aten) supreme that is his tragic (and literal) flaw. In this book, the deaths of Akhenhaten and Nefertiti set up the reign of the very young Tutankhamon. Alas, of course, even his reign is ever so brief and Drury contrives to convince us of the conspiracies that bring about his demise (or, as Drury shows, murder!). Dramatically presented, this story line captures the reader from the start asDrury brings, vividly, to life the court of the Eighteenth Dynasty, or some 3300 years ago. Granted, as this is a work of fiction, some literary license must be permitted (or else it's called non-fiction) and later Ancient Egyptian mystery novelists (especially Lynda S. Robinson--the Lord Meren series--and Lauren Haney "Right Hand of Amun"--both excellent writers, incidentally) show some disagreement with some of the historical points. But no matter, Drury, as he writes in his thoroughintroduction, explains any inconsistency that the reader--or expert--may find. For sheer drama, however, this book is hard to beat and Drury is true to form! I found his Egyptian tales more fascinating that his "Advice and Consent," for which he was awarded the Pulitzer--and that's saying quite a bit!(Billyjhobbs@tyler.net)

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent study of Ancient Egypt By A Customer Return to Thebes is a brilliant work, and is even better than A God Against the Gods, its predecessor. Return to Thebes' plot has been carefully written by Drury to fit the archaeological theories about what really happened involving Akhenaten and his succesors. Every place and artifact, as well as most of his characters, actually existed! While it does drag at some points, this book will completely absorb you into the world of intrigue that was Egypt's court. Return To Thebes charts the fall of Akhenaten to the beginning of the next dynasty with Ramesses the first.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A good sequel to an interesting story. . . By David Zampino In "A God against the gods" the late Allen Drury introduced us to 18th Dynasty Egypt, and some of the colorful personalities which debated the concept of monotheism for (possibly) the first time in history. Now, in "Return to Thebes", Mr. Drury finishes the story. We see the madness and decline of the Pharaoh, and the machinations of the priests of the traditional gods to regain their former power.Altogether, a fascinating look at a period of history which was (until this point) totally unfamiliar for me.I highly recommend these books.

The story is told from the alternating view points of Fereiba and her son Saleem. Fereiba's story starts when she is a young girl married off to a near stranger; a man who becomes her soulmate and love of her life. As a married woman with children and an educated teacher, Fereiba's life is shattered as the Taliban and its fundamentalist regime, rises to power. Her husband is targeted and Fereiba and her children are forced to flee their home and country. As they attempt to reach England, they find themselves in dangerous territory going from Afghanistan to Turkey to Greece and so forth. When Fereiba is separated from Saleem and forced to travel on with her two youngest children, she wonders if she will see her son again. The story is compelling and heart wrenching. The struggle of these refugees is real and the utter despair they feel at their circumstances is palpable. I was fascinated up until the end when I was left with a very unsatisfactory conclusion that left the ending open to the reader's imagination, rather than giving us real closure. The ending was so abrupt and disappointing to me that I actually compared my electronic copy with the print copy, thinking that perhaps I was missing some pages. Nope. I wish I could just go with my initial impressions for this review, but the lack of a substantial ending left a bitter aftertaste.I received a complimentary copy for review. My opinions are my own.

You spend the whole story waiting for the ending that is a huge part of the story and it never happens. Nadia. What were you thinking?

Wonderful Book (possible spoiler in this review) By Avid Reader If you enjoy the writing of Khaled Hosseini, I think you will also appreciate both of Nadia Hashimi's novels. I loved When The Moon Is Low. It is an emotional journey about love of family, freedom and country. It explores the limits of personal strength and determination as well as the bonds between parent and child. I did not want it to end. My only criticism is one that I am finding in many books lately. SPOILER AHEADBy the end of the book you are hoping for the emotional payoff which does not really come because the conclusion of the story is left to the reader's imagination rather than played out. That said, and questionable title aside, this was a very enjoyable book, one I highly recommend.
