But by the final page, she has done it again, and I found myself going back to where the clues were all along in that dialog. I'm not sure how this would read to me if I had not happily made the journey through all 15 books, but I can say that I really can't think of a character that has worn so well, believably, along with the cast of characters that have come and gone. Poor Akitada, Ms Parker does put him through the ringer (!), but has given him a life that seems more real with each book, which is the highest compliment I can pay to a writer of fiction!

Akitada has risen far in the world, but the hopeful conclusion to the previous volume has now dissolved into domestic strife and self doubt. While the core mystery is interesting, it is the disarray of the household that hold's the reader's attention.

Another intriguing novel of Mrs. Parker By Dirk Fujiwara Arihito, the brother of Akitada's new wife Yukiko, has fallen in love with a nice young lady. However, her father was a convicted murderer. Thus, she is socially quite unsuitable as a wife for a member of the most eminent Fujiwara family that in Heian Japan had occupied all positions of power in government and at the Imperial court. So, his father Kosehira, Sugawara Akitada's friend and father-in-law, has forbidden a marriage, and threatens to disinherit Arihito, if he does not obey. Loving her brother, Yukiko persuades Akitada, once to put family affairs over his professional duty, to leave his post as a provincial governor without permission, and to travel with her to the capital, in order to find a way to mend the rift between father and son, and to make the marriage possible. Akitada promptly falls afoul with his friend Kobe, superintendent of police, and, much worse, with his superiors including the prime minister - another Fujiwara, of course.Akitada solves the problem, and just along the way also another murder. However, the outcome is completely unexpected. There is great peril for his wife, and grave future sorrow for Akitada is guaranteed.Mrs. Parker's Akitada novels paint a picture of mediaval Japan, and certainly are addicting. I have been addicted for quite a time, now. I devoured this book. And I acquired the next one, as soon as it became available!
