This well-researched historical/fiction novel follows the true life story of one of the most remarkable soldiers to come out of the American Civil War, Albert Cashier, who answered his nation’s call in time of war and enlisted in the United States Army. Enduring the rigors of basic training, Albert soon found himself mustered into the 95th Illinois Volunteer Infantry attached to General Ulysses S. Grant’s Army of the Tennessee and into the midst of the Siege of Vicksburg. Albert would go on to participate in the Red River Campaign, the Fall of Atlanta, the Battle of Franklin, the siege of Nashville, and the siege of Mobile for a total of forty battles and skirmishes and cheat fate by never being seriously wounded. After the Civil War, Albert drifted from place to place doing odds jobs, working as a farm laborer, and living a secluded life. In 1911 while working odd jobs for a State Senator, Albert’s leg was accidently broken when he was run over by an automobile. Upon examination by a doctor, it was discovered that Albert Cashier, the veteran of over forty battles and scrimmages of the Civil War, was, in actuality, a woman. Born as Jennie Irene Hodgers in far off Ireland during the Great Irish Famine, through some of the most extraordinary circumstances possible, Jennie is forced to take the guise of a boy in order to receive the higher pay for the labor that her father demands of her. At an early age, he immigrants to America using the name of a dead boy, is left to fend for himself in the world’s most famous slum of the Five Points in New York City, comes face-to-face with Abraham Lincoln, and eventually enlists as a man in the U. Bradford has crafted a brilliant historical/fiction novel with an uncanny gift of combining well-researched, little-known real-life facts about the mysterious Albert Cashier with enduring fictional characters that seem to jump from his pages with realism and charm that serves to round out this fascinating true story. In a gripping narrative that blends just the right fusion of comedy and tragedy, Bradford addresses the tangled complexities behind the question of why Jennie Hodgers, born in Ireland, chose to be Albert Cashier, the hero of the Union army, and skillfully pieces together in a plausible and sympathetic manner the historical fragments of one Victorian woman's remarkable decision to live out her life on her own terms. I found the novel to be a spellbinding slice of history, filling the gaps of his missing years to shed light on the mysteries of Albert's hidden past, a private life where he held his secrets close even to the grave.

By Amazon Customer An ambitious historical fiction novel written with keen attention payed to the details of Civil War battles and the customs of the times. As a psuedo-history buff I thoroughly enjoyed learning about every day life of the era especially from the perspective of a young girl with a life-altering secret to keep. Historical facts are expertly inter-weaved into a compelling story of an Irish immigrant not only trying to survive in the harsh landscape of the Five Points neighborhood in New York City but trying to conceal an identity left some 5000 miles away that if revealed would threaten her independence, her newly found confidence and her entire existence. A fantastic story of courage, perseverance, and what it was like to be the indomitable, Albert Cashier.
