Seaside Romance to Carry Readers Away By Rambling Reader "Love's Rescue" is a seaside romance written to carry readers away to the sweltering Florida Keys on waves of intrigue and emotion. I enjoyed this book, but it didn't leave a lasting impression on me. The novel caught my attention at the beginning, both in the prologue and through the first few chapters when the perils of life at sea and in the historic Florida Keys are brought to life in vivid detail. From hurricanes to shipwrecks, Christine Johnson showcases Key West in a historic light. The snippets of Key West and seafaring history were highlights of the novel. There was potential for "Love's Rescue" to venture into deep emotional waters. The plot dips into topics like physical disability, slavery, and deceit just enough to add interest to the plot, but it never ventured as far below the surface as I hoped. Likewise, there were a few characters who I wanted to know better, especially Elizabeth's brother, Charlie. Elizabeth is a heroine that is both likeable and frustrating. There were many times that I wanted her to follow her heart rather than the guidance of others. Rourke is a stand-out character, and definitely a hero that readers will find dashing and romantic."Love's Rescue" is a pleasurable read set beside the alluring and tempestuous ocean. Johnson promises more romance and adventure as the "Keys of Promise" series continues.I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell through Net Galley. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed above are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.

By Christian Fiction and More I selected Love’s Rescue to review mainly due to its setting, Key West, Florida. Having spent a lot of time in south Florida, and being interested in the history of the area, I found this book very appealing. Well, I got way more than I bargained for. This book really drew out my metacognitive side, making me think about the way I was thinking as I read. (Okay, maybe I’ve been reading too much about comprehension strategy instruction, but it did make me appreciate this book even more!) This book has characters you will cheer for as well as those you will love to hate. At one point I wondered to myself how I was enjoying the book so much even though I was gritting my teeth with frustration at the turn of events, and while I hate to admit it, I did take a peek at the last few pages just to make sure all was going to end well. The author gives just the right amount of information for the reader to make inferences without feeling like they came too easy, and without throwing in some new information or character from left field, allowing the reader that pleasant sense of accomplishment as the pieces of the story begin to fit together. The sights and sounds of the 1800s Key West come alive with the author’s wonderful word-smithing, backed by sound research. Elizabeth Benjamin returns to Key West after a four year absence. Having fended off all potential suitors, she anxiously waits to see what type of reception she will get from Rourke O’Malley, captain of a wrecker ship. She just didn’t anticipate her ship’s colliding into a reef being the event that would bring her face to face with Captain O’Malley. Elizabeth also has to wonder about how her father will react to her returning unwed and unbetrothed. As Elizabeth struggles to meet her obligations while remaining true to herself, she uncovers family secrets that will impact the lives of everyone within her home, and many outside of the family as well. She is faced with hard decisions and the possibility of great sacrifice. While multi-themed, the central theme that winds itself throughout the story, and brings it to a climax, is forgiveness. The author deals with the struggle we all face at one time or another, the desire to forgive in the face of a stronger desire to withhold it. Fans of historical romantic fiction will enjoy this book, even those who may not have selected a book within this genre that focuses on Christian themes. I thank Revell Publishers and Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for providing Love’s Rescue for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

Set in the Florida Keys just prior to the Civil War, the warm tropical descriptions and clear differences between rich and poor made me feel like I was in British India. It was different than anything I've read in a very long time, and I really liked it.Elizabeth is trying to make up for past wrongs, but has to learn that only God can control her past or future. I do wish a little more time was spent building up the romance between Rourke and Elizabeth, as it seemed like most of the story neither knew that the other liked the other. Still, the overall story of wreckers, a crippled brother, slaves and free was both appealing and fascinating.I would definitely read any future books by Christine!*I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. No other compensation was given, and all thoughts are 100% mine.*

I desperately wanted to read an alternative history where Richard III won the battle of Bosworth. What would his reign have been like, what would have been Henry's fate, etc? Not only does this answer those questions with entertaining and credible scenarios, but it carries on using the characters form the author's previous (also brilliant) Laurence the Armourer novels, allowing them to also have an alternative history. If you like Richard III; the Laurence the Armourer books; alternative history; action-packed, well-informed stories; expert depictions of mediaeval armour and battles, you will love this!

Interesting and well worth reading By Lola I do not consider myself a Richard 111 fan having been raised on Shakespeare, but imagining history had Henry Tudor lost was provocatively done by this author. I particularly enjoyed the detective aspect utilized that highlighted the continuing threats against King Richard through the lens of a lowly squire. The central role of this squire provided a lot of insight on the assumptions of nobility and chivalry while drawing me into the squire's story even more than that of the king. I highly recommend the book.

Why don't more writers take advantage of turning points in history like Bosworth Field to produce alternate histories? Highly recommended: only a little quicker in pace, please, next time?

Is our Christianity that of the New Testament?

"God and men and their relation to each other—this I believe to be all that really matters in the world, and that is what I have written about here."—A. W. Tozer

Like a physician running a biopsy on lifeless faith, here A. W. Tozer offers one of the most compelling critiques of feigned spirituality you may ever read.

In Of God and Men, Tozer exposes false religious notions and lifts up true New-Testament Christianity. A loving and gentle critique of culture and even the church, it reveals lies we unknowingly believe, godless practices we unknowingly do, and treasures of Christ we unknowingly ignore. A manifesto of true religion, Of God and Men will set your foot on the narrow path and lift your heart in soaring worship.

I lived in New Orleans during Katrina. No other story is more accurate or represents as many people and situations as Rae does. The journey is happy, sad, thrilling, nostalgic. It just makes me want to go back to NOLA.

The characters are beautifully drawn and although they are all connected they encompass a variety of ages and backgrounds. I know it 's fiction...but I really feel I learned something from this book..

A Company of Roses, by Megan Goodenough

Review A highly original historical scavenger hunt with roots in the Elizabethan period, this cozy mystery is highly recommended for Steve Berry fans. --bestthrillers.com1563, London. Lady Blanche ap Harry leads a band of thieves out of the palace and to a ferry waiting on the Themes. Their cargo? A box containing a "treasure" known as Elizabeth's Rose. As in the best Steve Berry novels, Megan Goodenough has taken a historically accepted fact and turned it on its side. The remarkable premise: what if Queen Elizabeth I - who has been known throughout the ages as the virgin queen - wasn't childless after all?Goodenough deftly alternates the narrative between the Elizabethan period and the present day. She uses historical figures, such as Lady Blanche and Lady Ada Lovelace, to great effect, and among the clues left for her modern-day sleuth - an artist named Cas - are their juicy letters. But Cas' motivation isn't simply borne out of a passion for solving history's mysteries. Some five centuries after the the box was smuggled out of the palace, the legacy of Elizabeth's Rose has hit dangerously close to home. Enter Rueben, a cloak-and-dagger operative (and love interest). He's not who he says he is, but Cas has no choice but to trust him. Goodenough manages an ensemble cast that at times feels a bit too expansive. But as Cas' quest for truth leads her on a scavenger hunt for the Rose across England, it all comes into focus, and the purpose of every character in this intricately woven tale is solidly justified. Sorting out the secret societies and spies Cas encounters along the way is a real joy for any cozy mystery fan.

About the Author A graduate of York University with a degree in archaeology, she's been short-listed for the Crime Writers' Association Debut Dagger Award, long-listed for the TS Eliot award and won competitions with BBC Writers Room. This is her first novel.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Goodenough is more than good enough . . . By Don Sloan Cas is not so hungover that she doesn't notice that there are a few things amiss -- like the disappearance of her good friend Lacey, or the diffident, handsome "insurance man" shadowing her, or the strange clues left in the sewn-shut pocket of her friend's expensive jacket. The wild ride has begun, and Cas must hold on for dear life if she's going to unravel a centuries-old mystery.Author Megan Goodenough has done a brilliant job of interweaving a fascinating piece of history with a thrill-producing mystery/adventure in her debut novel, A Company of Roses. The characters are plentiful and complex, the protagonist (Cas) is convincing as a hard-partying British working girl now in over her head, and the villains are ruthless and thoroughly believable. When rich, spoiled Lacey goes missing after a wild night of pub-hopping with Cas, it seems everyone wants to know what's happened to her. Secret agent Ruben has been tasked both with finding Lacey and protecting Cas, who is torn between wanting to cooperate with him and falling in love with him.At stake is a 500-year-old secret, begun when Queen Elizabeth supposedly secretly gave birth to a baby daughter named Rose. In a touching opening scene, a lady-in-waiting is smuggling the child to a place of safety, away from prying eyes."She was fighting the urge to lift the child into her arms, as she had done to Elizabeth herself when the Queen was tiny, and smelled of milk and promise."Indeed, this wonderful turn-of-phrase is one of many throughout this ingenious historical tale that alternately teases the reader with enigmatic clues, then reveals new epiphanies the next. Cas travels hurriedly from one storied British location to the next -- Brighton to York to London -- always a step ahead of nefarious forces bent on stopping her.In one location, Goodenough's vivid descriptive flair brings even a chilly old museum to life:"Dragons chased their own tails around wall brackets, looked as though they might leap from stained glass windows near the ceiling, and lolled in brassy glory atop red velvet curtains; languid, post-coital, dope-fuelled royal dragons, too sanguine to strike."It is this very gift for storytelling that brings verve to what otherwise might be a dry rehash of a royal legend: whether or not the Virgin Queen did, in fact, have a child. The promise of a firm resolution to this startling bit of historical intrigue is more than enough to carry the reader through the complex, interweaving plotlines -- all installed precisely to keep the reader guessing until the very end whether we are pursuing fact or fiction.I give A Company of Roses five stars and applaud this young writer's courage in attempting -- and succeeding -- to bring off a thoroughly fascinating read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Must Read! By Danielle Urban WOW! Megan Goodenough's cozy mystery, A Company of Roses, is exactly that. Readers will find themselves buried back in time to Queen Elizabeth's period and find that all may not be as it seems. An intriguing yet suspenseful journey in a race to find a woman who dissappeared leaving behind her clues...It's now up to Cas and a mysterious man to find her friend before it's too late. Cas soon finds herself traveling all over and falling deeper into a dangerous web to rescue her friend. Reuben is more than what he tells Cas...but he can't tell her that. But she's not stupid and senese he's more than what he seems. Reuben helps Cas as their journey takes them back and forth from the historical moment to the modern times they live within...Megan Goodenough's novel is stunning. Brilliantly woven with history, entertainment, and romance. I love a good mystery and an amazing sleuth. Cas is like a modern day Nancy Drew and the Famous Miss Fisher combined. Readers will love the twists and turns that Megan Goodenough has beautifully placed inside this read. The characters and historical importance make this a must read for all. I loved reading this novel and highly recommend it to readers worldwide. A Company of Roses is one readers can't miss.

By Sarah Jackson Too frequently new authors are overlooked in favour of the old staples and many are missing out on brilliant works. I can thoroughly recommend “A Company of Roses” to anyone who loves a good mystery. After a drunken night on the town, Cas wakes up in the local hospital to discover that her bohemian friend Lacey has vanished into thin air. She has left her with a cryptic letter, which sends on her on a code-cracking treasure hunt across England. She realises that there is more to this Elizabethan mystery, when her adventures are intruded upon by a shady criminal syndicate, a former Russian spy, and a rather dashing chap who swears that he is an Insurance Investigator.

I grew up in the church and it seems that unless you join a women's study group, you don't learn about these women. How can we afford to leave our girls with the role models of society any longer? I'm glad someone is FINALLY at least shining a spotlight on biblical women.I love that Rooney is a real, modern-day girl. I don't have kids but I have little cousins whom I love dearly and I want to read this. I think every little girl needs to read this. Cause this isn't just a book about the women in the Bible, it's a bridge that connects their stories to our own, and our young girls. And it's a conversation starter! It opens up a means of communicating what prayer is to me, what a real solution to bullying would be, and how our girls should deal with actual, real life issues in a Godly, biblical way.Kudos to you, Erin Weidemann. This book is what this generation has been waiting for.

I also volunteer in their school helping the 2nd and 4th grade teachers. This book is full of encouragement, wisdom and guidance for children of all genders and ages. It is a lesson of courage, trust, reliance and love. Rooney learns how to turn a bad real life situation into a good outcome by listening to, relying on and trusting God. The power of prayer can change lives and so it does in this book for a young girl who is being bullied by other girls. Rooney is changed by knowing that God hears her prayers and trusts that He loves her and is always with her guiding and directing her actions. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I am so happy to be able to introduce my girls to this series as it unfolds. My 9 year old absolutely loved this book. The story hit home for her, and having the character look a little like her favorite Disney princesses made it even more appealing. It is definitely written for the older girls (6-10). My 3 year old loved the pictures but is just too little to grasp the concept.I would recommend this book to any Christian family trying to find new ways to instill Christianity into their little girls.

The Fairy Tale of a Great Emperor By Felicia Quero What a story: it seemed to me that I was in a fairy tale, a magnificent enchanting fairy tale, but, no, everything is real, is history, and I feel proud that such a human being, the Emperor Federico II, has lived and operated in my former homeland, the South of Italy.

The story continues in book two..and the adventures amp up By Katie Garvin Sisters of the Confederacy starts off right where Daughter of Twin Oaks leaves off. Jesselynn has managed to secure a place in a wagon train headed west with trail guide Wolf. While these two are butting heads, Louisa is trying to do what she can to help the war effort. But with all the bandages she rolls and socks she knits, she still feels she can do more...such as sneak across the border and smuggle much-needed medicine back into the South.Jesselyn is just as determined and focused as she ever was in the previous book. And she finds her match in stubborn guide Wolf. I loved watching the sparks fly between these two--especially since Wolf thought she was a boy for the greater part of the book. How he finds out she is a girl...wow, was that funny! As for Louisa, I really felt sorry for her in this book. With the death of someone, she's kind of like a ship without a sail--she doesn't know what to do next. She's kind of left hanging at the end of Sisters of the Confederacy, and I am really looking forward to reading more of her story in the next, and final, installment to this series. If you enjoyed the first book in this series, you will very much like where Sisters of the Confederacy takes you. I would recommend reading this series in order--as I mentioned, this book picks up right where the first book ends and while the author does give background on what's happened...it's nothing like reading them in order! And now, for me, I'm off to get my hands on a copy of The Long Trail Home to finish Jesselynn and Louisa's story!I reviewed this book for Bethany House Publishers. Thanks to Jim for sending me a review copy. It was not required that I give a positive review, but solely to express my own thoughts and opinions of this book, which I have done.

Tale of Two Sisters By Sharon Knutson Jesselynn and Louisa continue their quest to survive the indignaties of the Civil War...Jesselynn decides to head towards Oregon in an effort to save the last few horses from her Kentucky home in the hopes of returning after the war is done to rebuild her family's horse farm. Louisa forges ahead with opening her home to wounded soldiers.Jesse joins a wagon train headed west guided by Wolf Torgestad, half Norwegian and half Sioux. To gather enough supplies to be allowed to join the wagon train, Jesse had to race Ahab, hoping to win the purse of gold, but if she lost, she forfeited Ahab.Louisa struggles to find her place in helping with the war effort...knitting socks and rolling bandages just doesn't seem enough....but finding the medicines to ease their suffering is...but it means going North and smuggling them back at the risk of her life.I have read all three books in this series, this was my favorite...that being said, there are some big flaws in these books, the continuity is uneven and rough at times. One page Meshach is riding Ahab, the next paragraph has Jesse riding him with no switch possible...often Ms. Snelling uses the same exact phrases over and over...as Lousia writes her letters, she invariably must blot a tear before it runs the ink, and finally after pages of minute detail you hurtle through big life changing events in two pages...maybe some more editing was needed? But the stories are good enough to brush aside these rough spots. I've read other books by Ms. Snelling and will look for future works...

Since I did not read the first book, I was a little confused the first two chapters. After that I couldnot put the book down. I read it in one day. When it ended I was so let down because it has gone into so much detail, then boom, it's over, without a really true ending. A love story cannot just end there! Please tell me there is another book to end this sequel!?

Pride of the Clan (Caledonia Chronicles Book 1), by Anna Markland

About the Author Passion smolders in my page-turning adventures, turning to ashes whatever obstacles a hostile medieval world can throw in its path. Besides writing, I have two addictions-crosswords and genealogy, probably the reason I love research. I am a fool for cats. My husband is an entrepreneur who is fond of boasting he's never had a job. I live on Canada's scenic west coast now, but I was born and raised in the UK and I love breathing life into the history of my homeland. Escape with me to where romance began.  You can find me at my website and my Facebook page, Anna Markland Novels. Tweet me @annamarkland, join me on Pinterest, or sign up for my newsletter.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Pride Of The Clan. By petula winmill I was lucky enough to receive an ARC but that does not colour my review in any way.The start of what I know will be a fantastic new series . This time we are in the Scottish Highlands, with the Robertson Clan.Three men have conspired to kill the King. The Laird of the Robertson Clan has sworn to bring the Kingslayers to justice. They are searching for the murderers when they come across a family on the road to the castle that belongs to the traitors. After the deaths of her parents Margaret is being bundled off by her aunt and uncle ,to a man she has be betrothed since she was twelve years old. She has had no contact with him for eight years and fears he has forgotten about her.Being the betrothed of a man known to have killed the King, puts Margaret under suspicion of being involved. Rheade is the second of the Robertson brothers. His eldest brother being the Laird. No matter what he does his big brother is never happy with him, and when Rheade tries to protect Margaret things could come to a head. This is a marvellous historical romance. Our wonderful author paints such a detailed picture of her story I felt as if I had been transported back in time. Even the unpleasant parts of life in the era (like the lack of personal hygiene ) are so vivid. I don't know enough about Scottish history to know if the political happenings in the story are fact or artistic licence, but I believed every word.Because I know this author's work I think I spotted where the series might go from here and I can't wait to read more.

By CrazyOnBooks Well written and well researched, Pride of the Clan is an exciting and brilliantly written story set at a historical time.In 14th century Scotland, the king has just been assassinated and an all out hunt has transpired to arrest the perpetrators. Not knowing this, Margaret and her relatives travel to meet her betrothed, who happens to be one of the conspirators. Margaret was soon captured by Rheade, who not only determines her innocence, but was also captivated by her beauty and elegance, and has vowed to do all things in his power to protect her. But will he be able to convince the Queen of Margaret's innocence and spare her from being wrongly executed? This is an exciting, page-turner of a story! I've struggled to put down the book on numerous occasions, with my mind constantly begging for one more chapter. The pacing of the story is perfect, and there were absolutely no boring sections. In contrast, there were even some mysterious yet intriguing sections that hooks you into looking out for the next book! The characters are very likeable, and their chemistry is second to none! Rheade and Margaret complement each other very well. Rheade is a strong and skilled person, the epitome of a gentleman who would give up everything to protect the one he loves. Whereas Lady Margaret has such a loveable character, a true lady who uses her wit, charm, and character to turn people to her favor. Needless to say, the result is a hot and sizzling romance that befits their love for each other. The author, Anna Markland, has provided a very realistic and seamless flow to mesh the story with historical facts. Her description of the place, how people conduct their daily lives, the language used and the attires people wore allow you to be successfully transported back in time, submersing yourself to the cultural background at the time.I will definitely recommend this to my friends, and look forward for more titles from the author.

Excellent medieval! 5 stars By Nicole Laverdure Pride of the Clan, is an amazing medieval adventure like I love them!I adored, Anna Markland's first book, in the Caledonia Chronicles Series. The theme is entitled The Kingslayers! Lovers of Scottish romances will spend hours of pleasure following Rheade and Margaret's journey! Their love story is filled with tenderness and passion, a great plot blended with intrigue and action, that will keep your interest until the end. I could not put it down, I read it in two days.It tells the beautiful story of Rheade Robertson, brother of Logan and Tannoch, laird of the Robertson clan and the smart and loving heroine Margaret Ogilvie. On her way, to meet her betrothed, she discovers that the man, she hasn't met, since eight years, is suspected of murder with other men. Along this journey, across the Highlands, Margaret and her family are arrested by a group of highlanders of the Robertson clan. Rheade, soon falls for the beautiful lady and decides to protect her, even with his own life in the balance. As soon as she meets him, she has the same feelings toward this brave and gentle highlander. But, they will soon, be caught in a political turmoil, filled with twist and turns. You will love his brothers Logan and Tannoch, who has a barbarian side, which, with time, will improve. Will Rheade and Margaret's love, survive family rivalry? Will the kingslayers be brought to justice? Is there hope for Rheade and Margaret's future? A must to read!Again, Ms. Markland didn't disappoint me! Her Scottish adventures are always fun to read! I'm looking forward to read her second story in this series which will be entitled Highland Tides.

Unique in the way it's told with the heroine a Yankee woman instead of a southern belle. She comes to the South and runs a plantation during the war and goes form a young girl to a woman through the struggles of the war. This is my first time reading this author, but it won't be my last. I love Civil War romance books and read as well as write them. That's how I know this one is unique and why I loved it. I hope to see more by her.B. J. I couldn't put it down until it was finished. The warm way the story was told regarding people helping strangers is good to remember even during such devastation and hatred from the war. It was a good depiction of the inequalities of slavery and what white men think they are entitled to. I was happy with the way she closed out the story. Good read for sure.

I saved it for my vacation and found the book to be very enjoyable. I loved the characters, the flow of the story, and Ms. Gracie's style of writing. Through her words and attention to detail, my mind's eye was able to travel back in history making the story come alive. Well done!

No matter how much time and energy we invest in ministry to kids—perfecting the way our ministry areas look, finessing the message, assembling the best volunteers—the reality is that we, as leaders, have a limited amount of influence on a child or teenager. In a typical week, on average, we have one hour to make a lasting impact. That’s all we’re going to get. Parents, however, have about 50 hours per week to influence that same child or teenager. Whether that parent is married, single, a step-parent, a grandparent, a helicopter parent, or an absent parent, he or she still has more influence in the life a kid or teenager than the church. In Think Family, Terry Scalzitti (lead pastor of Ocean View Baptist Church, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina) examines some key differences in an “age-group” mindset and a “pro-family” mindset. Think Family is part of the You Lead Series, ebooks you can read in one sitting, by Orange, a division of The reThink Group. See more resources like this at ThinkOrange.com and OrangeBooks.com.

A thrilling new Victorian-era urban fantasy for fans of Kevin Hearne’s Iron Druid Chronicles, the Showtime series Penny Dreadful, and the Sherlock Holmes movies featuring Robert Downey, Jr.   With a flood of dark magic about to engulf Victorian London, can a handful of heroes vanquish a legion of the undead?   When monster-hunter Malcolm MacFarlane comes across the gruesome aftermath of a ritual murder in a London church, he enlists the help of magician-scribe Simon Archer and alchemist extraordinaire Kate Anstruther. Studying the macabre scene, they struggle to understand obscure clues in the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics carved into the victim’s heart—as well as bizarre mystical allusions to the romantic poetry of William Blake. One thing is clear: Some very potent black magic is at work.   But this human sacrifice is only the first in a series of ritualized slayings. Desperate to save lives while there is still time, Simon, Kate, and Malcolm—along with gadget geek Penny Carter and Charlotte, an adolescent werewolf—track down a necromancer who is reanimating the deceased. As the team battles an unrelenting army of undead, a powerful Egyptian mummy, and serpentine demons, the necromancer proves an elusive quarry. And when the true purpose of the ritual is revealed, the gifted allies must confront a destructive force that is positively apocalyptic.Praise for The Undying Legion   “Monstrously entertaining.”—Wit and Sin   “These books are just pure unadulterated fun.”—Slapdash & Sundry   “An impressive follow-up in the Crown & Key trilogy.”—Bibliophage   “A pulse-pounding ride.”—Faire’s Fair   “A delightful read! . . . Chapter 1

Malcolm MacFarlane let the frigid London night swallow him. A cold hard rain had begun to fall. His thick, wool coat had soaked up so much water that it felt like he carried an additional load of ammunition on his broad shoulders. He wiped the excess water from his face, brushing it back over his coal-black hair, which was pulled and tied with a strap of leather. Tonight, he would do what he did best. Hunt. He had spent the last few months tracking down the stragglers from Gretta Aldfather’s werewolf pack and putting silver bullets in their animal brains.

Malcolm had hunted the wild places of the Highlands and beyond all his life, studying the spore of monsters until it was his art form. Here in this city, however, he found it was not so easy. The maze of filthy hovels and wash of humanity made such skills almost worthless.

Malcolm liked to believe it was the prospect of information and not the warm glow and promise of a dry place that led him to the soup kitchen in St. Giles. He was surprised to see it open since it was well past midnight. He had made a habit of haunting the poorhouses and soup kitchens because the people of the street heard and saw a great many things. They were the first to know when something was amiss, or a beast was stirring. This place would make the third one this evening. He stepped inside and the frigid cold lifted. Unlike the other hovels that made him despair over the condition of man, this one made him feel safe and contented.

His eyes found, at the far side of the dingy hall, a mouselike woman who was cleaning up after serving late supper to the unfortunates. Her bonneted head and her small hands focused on gathering dirty utensils and used plates. She was dressed in plain clothes and wore small, round spectacles. Her gaze lifted briefly to Malcolm, but then fell quickly toward the pile of dishes in front of her. Next to her were baskets of extra clothing, and odds and ends for those in need. The woman left her place behind the table and snatched a wool scarf from the basket. She held it out to Malcolm as she approached.

“We have finished serving for the evening,” she said with a smile, “but I can find a bowl of soup for you if you’ll wait.”

“No, thank you. I’m not hungry.” Malcolm dripped water from his sleeve to the floor. Drops glistened on his dark hair and thick eyelashes. “And I am not in need of your scarf.”

“Please.” Her voice had the timbre of a frightened rabbit. “I made it myself, and you will have need of it before this night is through. I can’t have you falling into an ague from the damp.”

He stared at her homely features. “I’ve seen worse weather in Scotland, and me in nothing but a kilt.” She blushed but still she wrapped the soft grey wool around his neck.

She had seemed so unassuming that her sudden boldness took Malcolm aback. He wasn’t one to accept charity, but he wouldn’t offend the young woman. Perhaps he looked like a bedraggled vagrant after so many nights on the streets. He would give the scarf to someone more in need than he but let the woman think she had helped his poor soul.

“Tell me then, miss, have you seen anything strange about? Anything out of the ordinary?”

“Aside from yourself?” she asked, obviously judging his accent. “You are far from home, I hear.”

“Aye, that’s for sure.” Malcolm let a little extra lonely brogue pepper his words to stir the tender heart of this woman. “But I’m here to do a job. And it would help me if you could say if you’ve heard talk of unusual events about.”

The woman sized up Malcolm and took on a look of sadness that actually disturbed him a bit. She whispered, “I take your appearance as something of a sign then. Because some of the people here have been sorely frightened.”

“Tell me.”

“Tonight, a man said he saw figures robed in red with a young woman in white.”

Malcolm exhaled in disappointment at the story. Clearly not a sign of Gretta’s old pack. “Is that some local haint?”

“Not to my knowledge, sir. He seemed quite disturbed by it. If you’re here indeed to help, you might look into it.”

“Where was this weird visitation?”

“St. George’s Bloomsbury, sir.” The young woman swallowed hard as if gulping down her terror now that she had spoken it aloud.

“I thank you for your information.”

“Bless you, sir.”

Malcolm opened the frightened woman’s hand and placed coins into her palm. “For the poor.”

She grasped Malcolm’s arm tightly and the gratitude in her eyes moved the hunter. “The Devil has great power.”

“Well I know it. Perhaps after I take a look, I’ll return for some of that soup.”

She bowed her bonneted head shyly. “It will be waiting when you need it, along with a friendly word.”

Malcolm smiled at her, thinking that her face could have been pleasing if not tightened in some permanent grimace of penance. “One can’t have too many friends, eh?”

“No.”

“Thank you for the scarf.” With that, he went back out into the cold, miserable night, where he was more at home.

The great white block of St. George’s Bloomsbury looked serene in the misty lamp glow. Malcolm could barely make out the odd, pyramid-like steeple around which the haunting dark shapes of lions and unicorns clambered while King George I looked down disdainfully in his pagan Roman attire. The church squatted between two tall neighboring edifices, enhancing its resemblance to a classical temple.

In its shadow, Malcolm saw two dim figures lurking under the massive colonnades by the south doors. Not too surprising. The spiritual presence of the church called vagrants and the poor to its doors whether they were open or not. But when Malcolm went round the side, he saw three more shapes in the narrow space between the buildings. There was a flare of a cigar end as well as a faint trace of spicy smoke. Malcolm came closer.

These were no vagrants. They were well fed and muscular, all with beefy shoulders and ham-sized fists. Guards of some sort, apparently meant to make sure no one disturbed whatever was happening inside the church.

That wouldn’t do. Not werewolves, but suspicious enough for Malcolm to work off a bit of frustration. These men were probably paid off in a local pub for a couple hours’ work. There was no need for the use of firearms. Malcolm stepped out of the shadows and strode up to the men. They started, as he was sure he looked like a wraith coming out of the mists in his black garb.

“Waiting for services?” he asked them in a friendly manner.

“None of yer business, Angus,” snarled the man with the cigar, noting Malcolm’s brogue. He was a big man with square shoulders with a noggin to match. “Best you head back where you come from.”

“Nothing interesting happening there.” Malcolm looked past him to the side door. “Seems like something interesting here though.”

The second man pulled a bludgeon from his ragged wool coat. “Does this make you change your mind? You’re no match for all of us.”

“You’re mistaken,” Malcolm answered, flinging back his own black coat to show the twin Lancaster pistols.

“Hellfire!” said the man as he pointed at the weapons with his measly club. “What are you hunting? Lion?”

The big fellow laughed. “All’s quiet here, Angus. Just move along.”

“Is it?” Malcolm asked. “Or is there something going on inside that church you don’t want me to see?”

“Folks need to stay out for a few hours. Why don’t you come back at dawn?” A third man drew a thin, wicked blade.

“Step aside.” Malcolm had to give them credit. Just the sight of his weapons was usually enough to cow most men, even a werewolf once or twice. These men were obviously paid very well for their bravado.

The two men who were armed came at Malcolm quickly, thinking they would catch him off guard before he could pull his weapon. They were wrong. The pistol rose in a blur and he shot one man, shattering his forearm, and the knife dropped with a scream. Twisting about, Malcolm slammed the gun across the face of the man who had raised his cudgel.

Malcolm rammed his shoulder into the big man’s chest. So fast did the Scotsman move that the man could do little more than cry out in surprise. They went down in a tumble and he lost his grip on the pistol. Malcolm rolled away as a meaty fist drove into the ground where his neck would have been. He had to be quick and keep his opponents off balance. The big man was dangerous and needed to be disabled fast. Malcolm made it to his feet first.

Two new arrivals came running, and a red-bearded brute jumped into the fray. His chin lifted as he raised a wooden club. Malcolm swung a fast left jab into the man’s jaw. Red Beard’s head snapped around and Malcolm planted a right cross on the man’s temple. He dropped.

As Malcolm whirled back to the big brute, Red Beard’s partner grabbed him around the chest from behind. Malcolm used him as a brace and brought a boot into the brute’s midsection. The man fell back with a grunt of pain. Then the Scotsman threw his head back and connected with the nose of the man holding him. Restraining arms dropped and Malcolm spun about with a wild look.

His opponent gave a wicked swipe with a razor, but it caught in the folds of Malcolm’s grey scarf instead of his jugular. Malcolm grabbed the man’s arm and shoved his palm under the elbow and pushed up. The arm cracked, and the man flopped to the ground with shrieks of pain.

The big thug, shaking himself like a bear, rose from the ground. He plunged again with fists flailing, and the hunter let him come, slipping under to land a powerful blow of his own. It crushed the man’s lips and sent teeth flying. Malcolm’s fist darted out again, but this time it merely glanced off as his opponent shifted his head. Malcolm stumbled a step beyond the big man. The brute took advantage of the off-balance Scotsman and landed a hard blow on Malcolm’s ribs. It took the breath out of him.

Malcolm ducked just in time to avoid the thug’s next bone-crushing blow. He felt the wind as it passed over his head. He also heard the splintering of the wooden planks along the wall. Spinning on his heel, Malcolm locked both his hands together and brought them down onto the big man’s unprotected back. The behemoth shuddered and fell to his hands and knees.

Malcolm turned to face the thug with the cudgel, who had gotten up finally. The man came in swinging madly. Malcolm dodged under the first two swings, then stood up quickly, smashing his elbow under the brute’s chin. The man’s jaw shut hard and his head jerked back. He staggered and allowed Malcolm to deliver a hard right cross. This time the man went down and didn’t move.

Malcolm didn’t turn around fast enough before the behemoth struck him hard in the side of the face. The sheer impact rattled his bones to the core. Malcolm fell into the dirt, a cloud of dust rising beneath him, his breath going with it. He struggled to stand and got a boot in his face for the effort. The world went black for a second, and when his vision returned, he found himself in the grip of the huge man. Iron arms were wrapped around his chest so tightly that breathing was no longer a possibility. Malcolm groaned with the agony that spread across his ribs.

He struggled to shake off the darkness and get his feet beneath him, but not before the big man whirled around, slamming the hunter against a wall. His right shoulder took the brunt of it and his arm erupted in agony. He didn’t have much time. There was a roar in his ears. His numbing mind tried desperately to find a way out of the bear hold.

Malcolm pulled a pistol from across his hip. He couldn’t lift the weapon up, but he could point it down. Praying the leg he was shooting wasn’t his, he fired. The bullet blew through the big man’s knee. The scream that came almost brought a smile to Malcolm’s lips except that he was too busy trying to breathe and stay conscious.

The big man bellowed in agony and dropped Malcolm to clutch his shattered knee. Slumping to the ground, the Scotsman rolled to the side, sucking in a great lungful of sweet air. Letting go of his bleeding leg, the man came unsteadily at Malcolm once more. Malcolm slipped under a clumsy blow and brought his hand up, and with the heel of it caught the brute full in the face. Then a series of strikes forced the man’s head side to side. They were short and quick, flicking in so fast they were just a blur of movement. The man’s big frame shuddered before momentum carried him past Malcolm, thudding to his knees. He cried out in more agony, clutching his injured leg.

Malcolm’s hand brushed across the blood dripping into his eye. His strength was rapidly running out. Amazingly, the lame man strained one more time to rise, fear in his eyes as Malcolm took one step toward him. Using his bloody left fist like a club now, and putting the weight of his whole body behind it, he struck the man on the neck below and behind the ear. It made a sickening, dull sound and the big brute’s eyes rolled white. He slumped into the dirt with a groan and did not move again.

The sudden relief of victory swept through Malcolm. He stared down at his lame and bloody attackers. Not one of them was conscious. The hunter was straight and deadly and utterly still yet every line of him was eager and alive.

“Done, are ya?” he spat out anyway. “Because I can keep going.”

There was no answer so he limped back to the steps and shoved open the door of the church. Inside, a faint glow beckoned from the right. All else was cast into deep shadows. He stepped through the pews and saw, in a ring of light on the floor, a distant shape, as pale as the cold tile it lay upon. Malcolm’s jaw tightened. The splayed figure was female. Her chest was a bloody mess. She had been flayed open to expose the organs inside.

Malcolm was too late.

The second Crown & Key story is an intriguing puzzle; each piece is its own supernatural entity, but it all comes together to create one cohesive, delightful story.I admit, I had my reservations about The Undying Legion, as the first Crown & Key book was hit and miss for me. I’m glad to say that the continued adventures of Simon, Kate, and Malcolm is just as exciting as The Shadow Revolution, but far less choppy. Authors Susan and Clay Griffith delve deeper into both their characters and the world they have created, making you care about the heroes and their motley crew of endearing secondary characters. The mystery this time around contains just as many threads but the web is a logical one. When Malcolm busts into a church and sees the aftermath of a ritual murder, he calls upon Simon and Kate to help him decipher the clues left at the scene. But every answer only leads to more questions. Soon our heroes are on a quest to uncover a necromancer who’s raising the dead, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Racing alongside Simon, Kate, and Malcolm as they try to solve the mystery and prevent more murders is what makes The Undying Legion so much fun, so I’ll avoid any more plot details for fear of spoiling it.There’s a little bit of every kind of magic in The Undying Legion, but it all works together well. Malcolm, Kate, and Simon don’t just react to what’s going on around them, they become personally invested in it for a multitude of reasons, which gives the story depth. Though the characters still don’t truly fit their Victorian-era setting, it wasn’t too hard for me to suspend disbelief and simply enjoy. The action and character building was well balanced, and I loved learning more about each character. The ending of The Undying Legion left me eager to dive into the final Crown & Key story, The Conquering Dark. I can’t wait to see what happens to Kate, Simon, and Malcolm as they face their biggest challenge yet!

A SUPERNATURAL STEAMPUNK MYSTERY SET IN VICTORIAL LONDON; GOOD SEQUEL --(4.25 STARS)** By Anne This novel continues with the main five characters from the first book banding together to save London during the Victorian period from demons. This is basically a supernatural mystery that could appear to fans of AC Doyle is you like supernatural mysteries. I like several things in this series that kept me reading despite the things I did not like. Among the likes is that the story is fun and fast-paced. The characters and the world are well-drawn and I found myself not minding the steam-punk aspect as much as I normally do. (Steampunk is not a favorite, but the authors only do not rely on it as much as in many other series). What I did not like was that these characters only met a few weeks ago; even if it had been several months it’s implausible that they would have settled in with each other like it has written. All relationships have growing pains and when you have been together as long as Simon and Nick have and considering that one of them is definitely an introvert while the other is an extrovert it would be impossible for three new people to join them and it be instantaneous harmony. There are things that you will hate about each other, you may be able to adapt in time but only with work. I also read some scenes that seemed almost identical to the first book. I know that this is an ARC copy and I hope the typos I found will be found and fixed before it is released.Overall, I find this series entertaining and will continue to read it to see if it improves and entertains me.**3.75/5 STARS: I want to thank the author and/or publisher for providing a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review; all opinions are mine.**

The same witty characters are back, and the team battles cults, the undead, and some ancient gods in this one. The fight scenes and gadgets are still boss while the female MCs invent more useful weapons and are just as active in the action as their male counterparts. A certain werewolf also makes an appearance. Book two does take a bit longer to set up (you learn more about back stories), but the pace becomes faster the farther you read. Overall, enjoyable and fun. I look forward the final book in this series! Recommended.Net Galley Feedback
