IN PENNING the following pages, I have had but one outstanding object before me—to make as plain as I possibly can just how any troubled soul may find settled peace with God. I am thinking particularly of those people who believe the Holy Scriptures to be divinely inspired, and who recognize that salvation is only to be found in Christ, but someway have missed the “peace of a perfect trust,” and though earnestly desiring to know the Lord, are floundering in perplexity of mind, like Bunyan’s pilgrim, in the Slough of Despond, or like the same anxious inquirer in his earlier experience, trembling beneath the frowning cliffs of Sinai. Consequently, no attempt is here made to prove that the Bible is true, as both the writer and the readers he has specially in view take that for granted. People who are bothered by doubts along that line may find abundant help elsewhere, as there are not wanting plenty of good books, written by sound Christian scholars, that present unanswerable arguments for the inerrancy and the divine authority of the Bible. The trouble is that so many people who profess to want help along these lines are too indifferent to investigate, even when the opportunity is put before them. It is of really earnest seekers after the truth that I am thinking. For many months I was myself in much doubt and confusion of thought until God by His Holy Spirit showed me through His Word the true ground of peace. That was many years ago, and as I write I find myself living over again the conflict of those days, and recalling, as though it were but yesterday, the gladness that filled my soul when I rested in Christ alone, and entered into a lasting peace with God that has known no disturbance throughout the years. The clouds may at times veil my sky. Sorrows and difficulties may try my soul. New discoveries of the corruption of my own heart may bring humiliation and repentance. But this peace with God remains unchanged, for it rests not on me, not on my frames of mind or experiences, but on the finished work of Christ and the testimony of the Word of God, of which it is written: “For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven.”

About the Author Henry Allen "Harry" Ironside (October 14, 1876 – January 15, 1951) was a Canadian-American Bible teacher, preacher, theologian, pastor, and author. Ironside was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to John and Sophia (Stafford) Ironside, who were both active in the Plymouth Brethren. At birth, Harry was thought to be dead, so the attending nurses focused their attention on Sophia, who was dangerously ill. Only when a pulse was detected in Harry, 40 minutes later, was an attempt made to resuscitate the infant. When Harry was two years old, his father, John, died of typhoid, at the age of 27. From a very early age, Ironside showed a strong interest in evangelical Christianity and was active in the Salvation Army as a teenager before later joining the "Grant" section of the Plymouth Brethren. A few months after he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, Helen died on May 1, 1948. Ironside resigned as pastor of Moody Church on May 30 and retired to Winona Lake, Indiana. On October 9, 1949, he married Annie Turner Hightower, of Thomaston, Georgia, who became his constant companion. He suffered from failing vision, and after surgery to restore it, he set out on November 2, 1950, for a preaching tour of New Zealand, once more among Brethren assemblies, but died in Cambridge, New Zealand, on Jan 15, 1951 and was buried in Purewa Cemetery, Auckland. Theological influence Along with others such as Cyrus Scofield, he was influential in popularizing dispensationalism among Protestants in North America. Despite his lack of formal education, his tremendous mental capacity, photographic memory and zeal for his beliefs caused him to be called, "the Archbishop of Fundamentalism." Ironside was one of the most prolific Christian writers of the 20th Century and published more than eighty books and pamphlets, a number of which are still in print. He also wrote the popular hymn Overshadowed. One editorial reviewer wrote of a 2005 republication that, "Ironside's commentaries are a standard and have stood the test of time."

The Mysterious Stranger-A Romance- is the final novel attempted by Mark Twain. It was worked on periodically from roughly 1890 up until 1910. It published posthumously in 1916 and belonging to Twain's "dark" period, belies the popular image of the affable American humorist. At the time this work was written, Twain had suffered a series of painful physical, economic, and emotional losses. In this antireligious tale, he denies the existence of a benign Providence, a soul, an afterlife, and even reality itself. As the Stranger in the story asserts, "nothing exists; all is a dream." The body of work is a serious social commentary by Twain addressing his ideas of the Moral Sense and the "damned human race".

From the Back Cover In his last years Mark Twain had become a respected literary figure whose opinions were widely sought by the press. He had also suffered a series of painful physical, economic, and emotional losses. The Mysterious Stranger, published posthumously in 1916 and belonging to Twain's "dark" period, belies the popular image of the affable American humorist. In this antireligious tale, Twain denies the existence of a benign Providence, a soul, an afterlife, and even reality itself. As the Stranger in the story asserts, "nothing exists; all is a dream".

About the Author Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called "The Great American Novel". Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which provided the setting for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. After an apprenticeship with a printer, he worked as a typesetter and contributed articles to the newspaper of his older brother, Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. In 1865, his humorous story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", was published, based on a story he heard at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California, where he had spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention, and was even translated into classic Greek. He is called as "the father of American literature".

At the end of the story, the character Satan manages to sum up, in one paragraph, with biting eloquence, some of the most serious theological problems with Christianity. It is the sort of passage that you read and then immediately bang your head against the wall because it's exactly what you always wanted to say and you wish YOU had been the one to write it down:"Strange, indeed, that you should not have suspected that your universe and its contents were only dreams, visions, fiction! Strange, because they are so frankly and hysterically insane -- like all dreams: a God who could make good children as easily as bad, yet preferred to make bad ones; who could have made every one of them happy, yet never made a single happy one; who made them prize their bitter life, yet stingily cut it short; who gave his angels eternal happiness unearned, yet required his other children to earn it; who gave his angels painless lives, yet cursed his other children with biting miseries and maladies of mind and body; who mouths justice and invented hell -- mouths mercy and invented hell -- mouths Golden Rules, and forgiveness multiplied by seventy times seven, and invented hell; who mouths morals to other people and has none himself; who frowns upon crimes, yet commits them all; who created man without invitation, then tries to shuffle the responsibility for man's acts upon man, instead of honorably placing it where it belongs, upon himself; and finally, with altogether divine obtuseness, invites this poor, abused slave to worship him!..."

A different face for Twain By Luxx Mishley In 1590 three Austrian boys - Nikolaus, Seppi, and Theodor (the narrator) - meet a mysterious stranger in the countryside near their small village. This stranger possesses strange powers, and delights the boys not only with his magic tricks (such as lighting their pipe with a breath or creating a miniature civilization from dust), but with his stories and observations regarding the human race. Though he identifies himself as an angel by the name of Satan he assures the boy that he is merely the nephew of the more famous figure, and gains their trust and their friendship. The boys continue a strange and often taxing relationship with the supernatural individual, and though they are unnaturally sedated by his physical presence his influence on their thoughts and morality creates a kind of lasting damage to their individual psyches.Mark Twain's narrative views on religion, faith, and humanity can be found in any number of his works, though I myself am only familiar with those presented in The Diaries of Adam and Eve, Helpful Hints for Good Living, and Letters from Earth. However, his critical presentation in The Mysterious Stranger is much darker than any I have read by him before. Although the story is told by Theodor, the narrative itself revolves around Satan and Satan's view of humanity. Much of the narrative itself is occupied with the sermons he delivers to the boys, which are aggressive and critical towards humanity, and often towards the morality the boys themselves are taught to respect. The kinds of ideas presented can leave readers wondering whether the character of Satan is really the nephew or the dominant figure, and allows them to question the motives of the foremost character in the novel. Is he truly a benevolent spiritual figure? Is he an evil entity set on wreaking havoc in the small community? And why, in light of their own doubts and misgivings about him, do the boys continue to associate with - indeed, seek out if possible - Satan? The Mysterious Stranger is not the Mark Twain of Huck Finn, or even the Mark Twain of Helpful Hints; here is a much darker Twain intent not on amusing his audiences, but on expressing feelings of aggression and anger towards a mass that so often seems to perpetuate its own misery. While I found Satan's frequent aggrandizing sermons to be incredibly tedious I appreciated the glimpse of Twain that I had not seen before.

By darragh o'donoghue this volume spans the length of Mark Twain's career, and contains some of his most famous shorter works, which all centre on the subject of Money. 'The Celebrated jumping frog of Calaveras County' is the most perfect tall tale in the English language, three flawless pages about Jim Smiley and the bizarre sidelines he would investigate to win a bet, any bet, written in a miraculous mid-19th century California vernacular. If that isn't enough, Twain tops it with the best closing paragraph of any work I have ever read ever.'The $1,000,000 Bank note' is almost surreal, or Marxist, the story of a derelict made an unwitting guinea pig by two elderly millionaires, curious to see what would happen to an honest but poor man in the possession of such an impractible note. The frightening fetishistic power of currency structures a somewhat creepily benevolent narrative, and the opening paragraphs audaciously cram a novel's worth of misfortune.'The Man who corrupted Hadleyburg' is the masterpiece here, at once an unforgiving morality tale about the temptation of money on an incorruptible town, and a satire on the crippling effect of bogus social respectability. Twain's irony is at its most relentless here, mixing anger at elite hypocrisy with distaste for the savage mob mentality. The scenes of public justice are hilarious but terrifying; the unnamed man taking monstrous revenge on a whole town for a personal slight, exposing its shams by an experiment, could well be Twain himself. The same could be said of the hero of his novella 'The Mysterious Stranger', Twain's last, posthumously published work. In this, an angel, Satan, nephew of his infernal namesake, comes to a late 16th century Austrian mountain village and systematically exposes the murderous herd instincts, moral deceptions and shabby pretensions of the human condition. Everything - war, religion, society, justice, family, human aspiration, childhood innocence - is ground down with misanthropic, sub-Swiftian satire.'Stranger' is not an easy book to like. As an historical novel, it is an utter failure, with no attempt to understand the mindset, never mind the language, idiom or customs of an alien culture. As an allegory for the contemporary America in which Twain was writing, the book is indispensible, insightful, brave, bracing, honest, incredibly prescient, but monotonous, flatly written and exhausting. As a supernatural fable, the book has little sense of wonder or of the unknown, but in its story of a devil wreaking subversive havoc on a socially repressive culture by playing on their hypocritical terms, 'Stranger' does look forward to Bulgakov's more successful 'The Master and Margarita'.

Excerpt from The Parsees: Their History, Manners, Customs, and ReligionThe vast empire known in Europe as the "East Indies" holds a population of one hundred and eighty millions of persons, the bulk of whom are either followers of Mahomed or professors of Hindooism. Scattered over the continent, but especially in Bombay, another race is, however, to be met with, differing essentially from both Mahomedans and Hindoos. The members composing this race are known as Parsees, and are the descendants of the ancient Persians who emigrated to India on the conquest of their country by the Arabs. Compared with the number of the other natives of India, the Parsees add so insignificant a quota to the population, that their existence to very many Europeans is not even known, while those who are aware that such a race exists very often confound them with the Hindoos and Mahomedans.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Madon This book provides an in-depth insight into the followers of the little known Zoroastrian faith which originated in Ancient Persia; They were persecuted and masacared by the Macedonians, Moslems, Mongolians and Afghans, but have survived these onslaughts. A handfull of them migrated to India, were called Parsees, and eventually flourished there. Unfortunately, presently, their numbers are fast diminishing!Minoo B. Madon.

Why offer it on Kindle in any fashion if you must purchase the book in order to be able to color his work. Just very frustrating when all the other authors that I have viewed in this same cats gory have a link to print out the pages. Would be ausome if this artist provides the same. If there was a way to give 2 ratings I would ... 5+ for the quality of the work and -5 for the accessibility thru this medium.

The Fall of Cailleach: This is a novel set in the years 1298 through 1300 (The Medieval Times) in Scotland and England. It is a fantasy novel that includes some elements of the history of these two lands during the Scottish Wars of Independence. While battles are being fought between Scotland’s patriots and King Edward’s men, among and between citizens of Exeter Castle, between citizens of Renfrew and Paisley and the local English garrison and the Scottish laird, there is a greater battle being fought between good and evil that involves the two main characters: Cailleach of the family Forsyth, a Scottish peasant, and Sir Thomas Michael Malet, a knight of Exeter. This battle becomes a battle for souls that features a secret order within the Knights Templar; St. Michael, the Archangel and his heavenly hosts; and the dark lord and the demons that plague the land. This novel is spiritual in nature, but does contain some dark content that might not be suitable for all readers. There are sexually explicit and violent scenes in the novel. This book is set in the years 1298 through 1300 in two villages in war torn Scotland, the world between life and death, and in England: a castle, a hamlet, a priory, and a commandery of the Order of Knights Templar. This is the most critical time in Scotland's history, a time in which she was without a king, when Scotland's nobility fought among themselves over the crown, and King Edward I, the usurper, took Scotland for his own. The genre of this novel is fantasy, which includes angels and demons, and historical fiction with the background of the Wars of Scottish Independence (King Edward I/William Wallace). There is a strong element of romance mainly between the two main characters. There is a strong spiritual element threaded throughout the novel - an overall battle between good and evil exists. The book also examines the human condition and nature of human existence There is some dark content in the novel including rape and demonic possession. There are some sexually explicit scenes in the novel that are romantic in nature. There are also a few scenes that are violent during battles, and a few that contain sexual violence that may be disturbing. This novel is a celebration of Scotland, the land and her people, the age of chivalry, the ongoing battle between good and evil, God, life purpose, and true love. You might like this novel if you: Like Scotland Like History Like the Medieval Times including castle life and the code of chivalry Like the notion of true love that may come with sacrifices Like philosophy as in you have pondered the purpose of your own and of mankind's existence. Believe in dichotomies that shape perceptions and realities such as there can be no concept of joy without knowing sorrow. Like mysteries of the world, especially Stonehenge Believe in a higher power Believe in angels and demons Believe in second chances at redemption Would love to get lost in another time and live vicariously a life that is full of trials and great purpose About the Author: Suzette Forsyth lives in Pennsylvania. She is a high school teacher and an adjunct professor of English. The Fall of Cailleach is Suzette’s first novel. It is a part of a series: The Battle for Scotland. Suzette is currently working on a sequel to this novel.

The first page led me to 'sink' into the book, and I looked forward to my reading time. I am a librarian, and I read for pleasure, and this book kept me captivated and I became immersed into Scottish history. I loved the usage of the Scottish, English, and French dialects which helped me feel that I was 'in' the story and learning through historical fiction. Forsythe's character descriptions and development created images which lead me to feel that I became an integral part of the story. Her use of the angel Gabriel, who lead the main character to continue to fight evil, was very compelling. I can not wait for the sequel. The Fall of Cailleach captivated me from page one.

Yet, do not be fooled by this humble beginning. As more people become involved in the fate of our two main protagonists, this tale quickly evolves into a much grander epic that pits nation against nation and angel against demon. At the heart of the novel lies a conflict that transcends time. This book is a must read for any person who, despite the cruelty and injustice of our world, continues to dream of better days to come.

It is while they are camped in the vicinity of the Dead Sea, near Sodom and Gomorrah, when three men appear to announce that the infertile and elderly Sarah will give birth to a son who will turn Abraham into the originator of countless generations. Sergio Ramírez presents the woman behind the man: Sarah. Jealousy, flirting, pragmatism, solidarity among women (in the case of Edith, Lot’s wife), the silent demand for equality, the condescendence toward a husband whose every weakness and limitation she knows, the bewilderment in the face of the unjustified and arbitrary preference that “the Magician” shows for Abraham.

When Dante Galand was just a boy, his father Larsin sailed away to make his fortune. And never returned. Since then, Dante has become a great sorcerer. A ruler. A destroyer of kings. And he's just learned that his father is living on a forbidden island at the edge of the known world. Where he's dying of a mysterious plague. In the company of his friend, the swordsman Blays, Dante travels to the island. There, his magic can do nothing for his father. As Dante and Blays quest for a cure—beset by strange beasts, angry spirits, and violent coastal raiders known as the Tauren—Dante falls sick, too. To save his father and himself, he'll have to rediscover the island's long-lost magic. But the hunt for its secrets leads Dante on a crash course with the Tauren—and island-wide civil war. And as he's away, an old threat begins to move against his homeland. Set in a USA Today-bestselling world, THE RED SEA is the first in a trilogy of warfare, sorcery, and friendship through the darkest times.

By The One and Only Seadog When a Trilogy is just not enough, and readers are demanding or (in my case) begging , for more, then you are probably reading Edward W Robertson! The Red Sea is a continuation of The Cycle of Arawn, featuring Dante and Blays. The story is fast and introduces a myriad of places, events. people, and magic that will not fail to capture you. The most enjoyable part for me when reading EWR books is getting to 'know' his characters. He has the talent to develop and become who he is writing about, and this translates into his writing such diverse and complex characters that the reader gets to know them, almost intimately I would say. I have read all of his books (that I know of) and they are as different and as interesting as his characters are. Waiting for more...

Normally after reading books that are in a set I'm disappointing however that is NOT the case in this situation. The Red Sea is just as well written as it predecessor, The Cycle of Arawn. It carries some of our beloved characters over and gives new angles to them. It also introduces new adventures to be coming in future books.

Imagine Agatha Christie writes a murder mystery, using a cast of characters as vast as any by J.R.R. Tolkien, and places it in the land of Louis L'Amour. This is the scope of And the Wind Whispered, the tale of three teenaged budding reporters who stumble onto a murder, which is only the beginning of the mystery. With visits from a virtual who's who of the wild west, the boom town of Hot Springs, South Dakota will not soon for get 1894. Praise for "And the Wind Whispered": "It's rare to find a work that is a real delight in its uniformly feisty, believable protagonists who work within a plot that holds no boundaries. And the Wind Whispered is a remarkable achievement" - D. Donovan, Midwest Book Review "...the book begins as any good murder mystery should, with a body. Throw in a dark cave and three snoopy kids, and you've a good story - if you know how to write it...Dan Jorgensen knows how" - Kevin Woster, KELO TV

By Jeanne Roedel Dan's book fit's into three genres - historical western, mystery and an adventure novel. You will not be able to put this page turner down!! It will sweep you back in time 120 years to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Unlike typical westerns, this adventure ride is unpredictable (not just in the story line, but delightfully so with it's development of each character) making it all the more a remarkable achievement!

What fun to imagine a day or two where all these famous people from the history of the area get connected in a hold-up and murder mystery. It kept me entertained and guessing at what would happen next and how each one would contribute to the resolution.

"The Catholic Parish Today" is not your ordinary book written by a Catholic priest about his Church-past, present and future. Brian T. Joyce has inspired clergy and laity alike with the clarity of his insights into the meaning of the Second Vatican Council and its impact on the worship, tradition, and mission of today's parish communities. Included are a collection of homilies, open letters, and "four-minute special" teachings related to controversial topics, such as, individual conscience, marriage, divorce, politics, science-and more. Renowned for his pastoral and theological acumen, Joyce's voice and writings are truly substantial . . . controversial . . . and uncensored.

At times, after Vatican II, that voice was one among many. In more recent years, his has been a cry in the wilderness. In "The Catholic Parish Today," Joyce shares his pastoral vision of what a Catholic parish (and the broader Church) can look like, when Christocentric spirituality and commitment to service guide both pastor and community. All who read this book will discover not only the heartbeat of a true priest and servant of God, but also their own value and dignity as brothers and sisters in the Body of Christ on earth. There's More . . .: A Novella of Life and Afterlife
