"Brendan DuBois is a fine novelist and easily the best short-story writer of his generation." --- Lee Child, New York Times bestselling author. It's 1943, ten years after the assassination of President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt. Germany is at war with Russia and rules all of Europe --- including Great Britain --- and Japan is conquering China and East Asia. The United States is an isolationist nation, still struggling with the Great Depression, and is being governed by President Huey P. Long, former Louisiana governor and senator. In Portsmouth, N.H., Sam Miller is a cop supporting a family and trying to stay on the right side of his boss, the law, and his conscience. Then a murder victim is found by the railroad tracks, a number tattooed on the victim’s wrist, something never seen before by the police. It's a case Sam could walk away from. It's a case he will be ordered to drop. And it is case that leads him into a lethal vortex of politics, espionage, rebellion, and international intrigue. As war rages in Europe, a new fascist power rises in America, overseen by President Long and his allies. And the people Sam thinks he knows best—his wife, his brother, his colleagues—reveal new identities. In a formerly close-knit city by the sea, where no one is above suspicion and no one is safe, a global summit is about to take place between President Long and Chancellor Adolf Hitler. On that day, history will be changed. And millions of people will live or die, all because Sam Miller has been a very good cop—faced with a very bad choice. PRAISE FOR AMERIKAN EAGLE "Rich in history an filled with breathtakingly true characters and nonstop plotting." --- Jeffery Deaver, New York Times bestselling author ABOUT THE AUTHOR Brendan DuBois of New Hampshire is the award-winning author of seventeen novels and more than 140 short stories. Alternative History murder mystery with the US and Germany as allies By Angel-Kat This book was originally released under the author’s pseudonym which I read in the hard cover format. I just reread the newly released ebook. It is a very good alternative history based on enough fact to give lots of things to contemplate. The murder mystery is intriguing and provides story twists. After reading, it makes one contemplate how much each choice or action today impacts tomorrow, how doing (or even knowing) the right thing, is rarely a clear or easy choice. The mood the author achieves is very 1940ish. I could easily see Bogart, Cooper, or Mitchum with Ava Gardner as the good/not so good wife in a black and white movie of this story. Those attached to the northeast, will enjoy the details around Portsmouth and New England. People that are avid history buffs might have trouble reading alternative history books because history is twisted and it is fiction with coincidentally convenient things happening, but that’s why I love fiction.Disclosure: I have to admit DuBois is one of my favorite authors. I prefer his Lewis Cole series but he does amazing alternative history novels, sci-fi, short stories, game shows, a “Renaissance” writer.Format: (purchased) ebook

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I Want More! By Sandra Saidak I am a fan of the alternate history genre, and I have to say, this one kept me on the edge of my seat like no other. My knowledge of the 1940s made for enjoyable reading as I recognized actual events and historical figures. But it was the many things I didn't know that I learned in the Author's Note at the end, or looked up online that really made the book fun. My only complaint was that it ended too soon. I just know I'm going to spend the next two weeks, writing those missing scenes in my head!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent!!! By Cycist I could not put this book down. I just finished it and had to write a review....It was so good!!! This is one of the best alternative histories I have read. I can't say enough good things about the book....the plot, the twists, the characters. I thought I knew where it was going and Boom!! I'm wrong and it goes off again. As soon as I finish this I'm going to get another book by the author.Note...as to the negative reviews about the Kindle edition. Yes, there are glaring errors and it's a shame. But, the book and story are just so good they really do overcome that.If you like alternative history, believe me, this is one of the best.

Ebook PDF Acquiring the Mind of Christ: Embracing the Vision of the Orthodox Church, by Sergius Bowyer

St. Paul clearly states: “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus...” (Phil 2:5.) How do we acquire this Mind of Christ and where is it to be found? For the Orthodox Christian, salvation is the acquisition of this Mind of Christ which is to be found in the Church. This acquisition moves us from the image of God to the likeness of God; through our obedience to this call we begin to know God and this knowledge is eternal life (John 17:3). This small book hopes to begin to answer how acquiring the Mind of Christ is possible and why it is necessary in our lives today. Fr. Archimandrite Sergius serves as the 16th Abbot of St. Tikhon’s Monastery. He teaches at St. Tikhon’s Seminary and has traveled extensively for the Monastery and Seminary giving talks and retreats.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful expression of our Orthodox faith By JB If you are Orthodox, don't hesitate, get this book! Might as well go ahead and order one for your friend too:). Some passages moved me to tears. Beautiful expression of our Orthodox faith, what it means, and what it is we are supposed to do in this life. Archimandrite Sergius's explanation of our Holy Mother the Church is so profound, and so beautiful, too. Excellent book for both understanding our faith, which is essential, but also for moving the believer to compunction by its beautiful expression. A marvelous companion to this book is Metropolitan Hilarion's "Prayer, Encounter With the Living God," also small, but profound book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This is my favorite! With limited knowledge of Orthodoxy By AB As I have been exploring Orthodoxy, I have read many books. This is my favorite! With limited knowledge of Orthodoxy, coming from a Baptist background, there were many aspects of the Church I just couldn't seem to understand, questions without clear answers. Fr. Serguis beautifully articulated the faith in a precise and simple way. He has brought me much clarity regarding prayer, the Mother of God and the Orthodox view of the Western Doctrine of Original Sin. This is a book I plan to read again and to give to both my Protestant and Catholic friends. Excellent!

The chapter on Augustine is one of the best I've read, and after recommending it to others, I was told by several that it helped them unload some of the baggage that the terms held in their Western upbringing (Original Sin, etc.). The chapter on the Liturgy, based largely on the understanding passed down by Elder Sophrony and Fr. Zacharias of Essex, is essential for anyone looking to deepen their own faith in a sincere and applicable way. Highly recommended.

An Intriguing Collection of Emotional Lives In Relief By SkewedPerspective-dbrowell It's worth beginning this review with what this is not: this is no mere collection of short stories, no novella, and no album of thoughts. It is much more than that.one minus one provides an intriguing mosaic of perspectives and experiences that tease connection but perhaps snake together best within the roots of identity and emotional vulnerability that grow beneath each story as you progress. You will not cheer for, cry over, or jeer every character, but you will likely relish the writer(s) attempts to understand why they feel the way they do.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It is a great book and a lovely title with an ironical twist ... By MA From a feminist point of view, The inconvenient Pebble is an inspiration to women. To be able to take control of one's life in this god-forsaken-place is a show of courage and independence. That's what the main character Lilibeth is trying to figure out as to how to make this world a safer place beset with murder, rape and lies. Living in fear in not an option. So one must learn to be strong and protect oneself and others in need with guns if necessary adhering to the covenant of the biblical principles at the same time. It is a great book and a lovely title with an ironical twist if readers will get the drift.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I love reading about this young woman and look forward to ... By Rita Ackerman This, the fourth book in the Ozark Mountain Series, drew me into the world of 1925 Missouri and the heroine LillieBeth Hazkit.LillieBeth beats all odds as she begins her life alone after her family moves to Arizona for health reasons. She takes on prejudice and changing values in her own mind and in the world around her.I love reading about this young woman and look forward to the next in the series.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book set my heart on fire. By NonStop The author has taken my personal hero and aged her five years. She is more mature, but still a young woman. Like many youngsters her age, she is both confused and sure of herself at the same time. I cannot imagine a better written character or a better crafted story touching on the changes, on the history, and on the people of the Ozarks. I know these people and the author is dead-on accurate. I know these places, they are smack in place. And his history doesn’t miss a thing. It is almost like the author knows where the end of my heart strings are and can tug on them at will. He knows where my funny bone is and can tap on it whenever he likes. He did both often enough in this fourth book of the Ozark Mountain Series, that I reread it immediately after finishing the first time through.Although the story was complete, reaching an appropriate ending, I wanted more. Still do. Waiting for the next book.

Her desire for distraction reignites a passion for a mysterious portrait she first saw as a young girl-a painting of a young violinist with piercing blue eyes. In her search for the painting, Sera crosses paths with William Hanover-the grandson of a wealthy California real estate mogul-who may be the key to uncovering the hidden masterpiece. Together Sera and William slowly unravel the story behind the painting's subject: Austrian violinist Adele Von Bron. A darling of the Austrian aristocracy of 1942, talented violinist, and daughter to a high-ranking member of the Third Reich, Adele risks everything when she begins smuggling Jews out of Vienna. In a heartbeat, her life of prosperity and privilege dissolves into a world of starvation and barbed wire. As Sera untangles the secrets behind the painting, she finds beauty in the most unlikely of places: the grim camps of Auschwitz and the inner recesses of her own troubled heart.

I urge you to buy it, read it, and be amazed by the storytelling ability of author Kristy Cambron. To be honest, when I request books to review, I ALWAYS choose books I know I will enjoy. Because of the heavy subject matter, I felt great trepidation in selecting this book. It’s about the Holocaust. Could there be a more serious and emotion provoking subject matter? Kristy Cambron has created a historical fiction masterpiece. I am so thankful I chose this book to read. I would easily rank Kristy Cambron with the greats like Francine Rivers.I will not give anyway of the plot because that would be criminal. In short, The Butterfly and the Violin, is the first book in Kristy Cambron’s debut series. Art dealer Sera James is searching for a portrait she saw years ago in a gallery. The painting is of a beautiful violinist with her hair shaved and a numbered tatoo on her arm. This book is about the story the painting tells, and the impact the story has on Sera James. While the book moves back and forth through time, I never felt confused or unable to follow along. Author Kristy Cambron writes with clarity and authority on her subject matter. Even though this book is classified as Historical Christian Romance, anyone, regardless of their reading preference, will certainly love this story. I could go on and on! Because I loved this book so much, I find myself anticipating the release of the second book in this series, A Sparrow in Terezin, available April 2015.Not many book releases make it to my calendar! This one certainly has. I was given a complimentary copy of The Butterfly and the Violin from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine and I have not been compensated other than the joy I received from reading this book.

Triumph of JOY By Renee “These prisoners—the ones who painted or wrote poetry or played in the orchestra—they refused to let the spirit die.” ~Kristy Cambron, The Butterfly and the Violin~Kristy Cambron’s debut novel, The Butterfly and the Violin, tells the story of two women: Sera James in present day and Adele Von Bron in 1942. Sera is an art dealer who becomes fascinated by a painting she saw once as a girl—of a young female violinist with piercing blue eyes. It’s a painting of haunting beauty, and Sera is compelled to chase it down.As she does, we discover the subject is Adele Von Bron, once a celebrated Austrian violinist, who ends up imprisoned in a concentration camp for smuggling Jews out of Vienna. Surprisingly, the painting was not commissioned when Adele was rich and famous. Instead, the canvas captures Adele the prisoner, who found a way to honor God with her music even in Auschwitz, an Adele matured & refined by suffering. We learn that this particular masterpiece so captivates Sera because it speaks of hope in the worst of circumstances—and that’s what I love about this story. For Adele’s story is one of hope and joy amidst heartbreak and loss. Adele’s legacy is powerful enough to help Sera break free of her own selfish bubble of personal pain and reach out for life and love. The Butterfly and the Violin reminds us that even when men try to remake the world in their own image, they can never erase God’s image in us. And all that is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent & worthy of praise cannot be silenced for long. What I liked best . . .Two storylines—present day with a link to the past (my favorite plot device)The old-Hollywood-movie feel of Sera’s contemporary romanceAdele’s riveting Holocaust storylineVladimir’s big heart & unfailing kindnessOmara’s strength & courageDancing on the banks of the River Seine on a sunny Paris dayThe Standing-Ovation-Worthy ending of Adele’s personal Holocaust experience!!!My favorite quote . . .“For the first time in her life she felt beautiful in her weakness, feeling God’s strength uplifting her from all sides.”***Thanks to Kristy Cambron & Litfuse for providing a copy for me to review.

Beautiful, powerful, strong characters By Caroline 4.5 starsThe Butterfly and the Violin by Kristy Cambron (Thomas Nelson, 2014) beautifully and powerfully covers deep emotions felt among possible prisoners of WWII and blends it with identifiable relationship and faith struggles in common day.The author writes this book from Adele’s point of view in the early 1940s and from Sera’s point of view in current day Manhattan. The author offers a strong, distinguished voice in each period allowing the reader to easily tell which time period is being read, as well as glimpses into that particular culture. Sera’s story is almost as much as about Adele’s story, but I enjoyed the way the author shows Sera learning from history to grow in her current life.I felt the first two chapters are a bit obvious in telling backstory, but future chapters revealed smaller bits of backstory slower and in intriguing ways. I was also somewhat surprised at Adele’s boldness in a conversation with her mother in an early chapter. It seemed uncharacteristic considering the dangers Adele and Vladimir had just discussed and the stifling society presented to that point. Even with these small issues in the early chapters, the actions and emotions portrayed are so powerful and interesting, the reader won’t want to put this book down. This book also asks reasonable questions about faith within unreasonable circumstances. The supporting characters, particularly Penny, Omara, and William, are strong and defined. They greatly add to the story in events, intrigue, and relatability. This book tackles heart-penetrating themes, including living beyond our past mistakes, believing in God even when we only see evil surrounding us, and opening our eyes to God’s presence and beauty everywhere. As a huge fan of historical fiction, I love the author’s note at the end of the book and find this subculture of Holocaust art extremely interesting (and something I’d like to read about more).Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own. I was not compensated in any other way.

This series is written over four decades by a master craftsman of history and character detail. Set in Cornwall just after the American Revolutionary War, it opens with the return of Ross Poldark to England after being wounded and thought dead in that war. He returns to find his father dead, his finances in disarray, his fiance now engaged to his cousin, the Warleggans have taken over much of Cornwall, and his house full of livestock and drunken servants. Books 1-4 are found in the video series Poldark. Books 5-7 are covered in the video series Poldark 2. I did not know Graham had written additional books in this series until a search on Amazon turned up the others. Books 8-12 cover the children of Ross and Demelza, and they are amazing. Most writers get into a rut and create the same novel over and over again. Winston Graham keeps finding fresh things to say and innovative things for his characters to do in these books. This picture of Cornwall at the turn of the 19th century rings true from beginning to end. The love, passion, struggles, and lives of this family are so engaging that I could read these books over and over again. The perils and joys of mining and seamanship, farming, religion, banking, courting, medicine, justice, war, all form a backdrop for the day-to-day details as this time and place come to life. These people love and hate and dispise each other, they forgive each other, and sometimes learn to live with each other. Through each book the cast is expanded with wonderful characters full of quirks and individual personalities. But the Poldarks remain: Ross and Demelza, his cousin Francis and Elizabeth; his arch-enemy George Warleggan and their children: Jeremy, Clowance, Bella, Geoffrey Charles, Valentine and Ursula. Each grows and develops, matures and becomes seasoned as the story moves through rebellion, lost love, marriage, business, sickness, death, war, success, and tragedy. The series books in order are:1. Ross Poldark (1951, original title The Renegade)2. Demelza (1953, original title Elizabeth's Story)3. Jeremy Poldark (1954, original title Venture Once More)4. Warleggan (1955, original title The Last Gamble)5. The Black Moon (1973)6. The Four Swans (1976)7. The Angry Tide (1977)8. The Stranger from the Sea (1981)9. The Miller's Dance (1982)10. The Loving Cup (1984)11. The Twisted Sword (1990)12. Bella Poldark (subtitled The Final Poldark Novel!)I hope that you will have the opportunity to enjoy them as much as I have.

I had to beg, borrow and seek out a complete set in used bookstores.I won't take time to give a plot synopsis or even much of a review, but let me say this: The Poldark series is the most powerful reading experience I have ever had. I read all 11 books (this was before the 12th came out) in just under two months. I did nothing but read, day and night. I am a "literary professional" and very demanding of high standards in the books I read; I don't read a lot of popular fiction. But I could not put these books down. I can't quantify or analyze or explain why the Poldarks are so magnificent. They just are. And everyone I have recommended the books to has had the same experience. They will take over your life. You will dream about these people and catch yourself thinking about them as if they were real. If you treasure such reading experiences, brace yourself and dive in. I envy anyone who gets to read the Poldarks for the first time.

The first novel in the Poldark saga is a must read. My criticism is with this edition by Sourcebooks. It is full of typographical errors. One of the main characters has his name spelled wrong through most of the text and there is a significant error in one chapter where the sentences are mixed and the paragraph makes no sense. I read books with an intense pleasure in both the work of the author but also with a pleasure in the actual book itself. It is frustrating to be so distracted by the mistakes, all of which could have been found by a simple proofreading of the text. I will be writting to Sourcebooks to tell them of this since I actually like the edition otherwise. The publisher has used a good quality paper, a very readable font size and in general I like the Sourcebook editions of it's reprints. They really need a better proofreader. In this case, go for the Pan published edition of the Poldark saga. With that said, do read all the Poldark books. I have loved this series since I first had a chance to know about it in 1975 (this book was written in the mid 1940's). If you loved the PBS/BBC series, you will enjoy the books even more. By the way, the new DVD set that is out is also wonderful. They have used the master tapes and the DVD's are of an excellent quality. Most impressive is the sound quality which is much improved. Read Ross Poldark and get hooked on this epic journey. You'll never regret the decision.

By King Of Corgis I recently finished this book and I was pleasantly surprised by how deep the story and characters turned out to be. I know many of you would consider this novel an erotica but I feel that it would be a travesty to give this book such a label. I am so glad that this book showed up on my recommendations list or else I would never have found this gem. As a fan of space opera and sci fi books, I was immediately hooked from the first chapter. Normally, I find space opera stories to be too large in scope with too many characters to follow but this one had just the right amount of focus and characters that it didn't become a chore to remember and follow its characters and their individual stories. I have read many novels with a post apocalyptic setting but this one stood out because of its characters and their interactions. I eventually became emotionally attached to these characters and so much so that when the ending came, I was shocked. The author was kind enough to respond to my emails and address my concerns with the book. Let me just say that I am even more excited to read the sequel. 2287 A.D. is a novel that has everything you would want and expect in a space opera. It has plenty of large scale battles, different planets to explore, spaceships, romance and endearing characters that you won't forget. Rarely do I post reviews on Amazon unless it is a book I really liked or if it was utterly disappointing. In this case, it was the former and I highly recommend readers to check this one out!

It looks like some of you didn’t read the authors introduction, which clearly warns you about the content.Bottom line; this is a rip roaring story that never stops accelerating. It’s a beautifully creative story with amazing characters that will keep you on the edge of your seat. You’ll laugh, cry and cheer for the heroes. The author takes you on a first class roller coaster ride into one of the best space operas I’ve read in years. One other added bonus included in the story is; just in case you haven’t figured out why the human race (yes, you, me and the rest of the people on this planet) continue to murder each other on a daily basis then read this book and the author will explain it to you in a few brief sentences…wisdom in a nut shell along with a great story, what more could you want!

34 of 38 people found the following review helpful. they took the super human bit too far... By Thomas Paine First, I need to admit that I have read only 1/3 of the book but its doubtful I will finish it. There are many things that I liked about the book and it is definitely well written: good prose, good story line, moves fast, good character development. But, in good faith to Science Fiction, I cannot give it more that 3-star even though it is more a Science Fiction Fantasy. What I found annoying were all these super powers the two main characters held which took away from the story and its suspense. They were suppose to be genetically enhanced not Superman and Superwoman but that is exactly what we got. For example, the small fighter ship was going to crash into the mother ship? No problem! The male saves the day with mental telekinesis and so on and so forth, each and every time... I was fine with the sexy portions and even enjoyed them but a military officer does not dress like a lustful sex goddess on the hunt, think dress code even in 2287, so I found that a bit stupid to put it mildly. If it wasn't the military then it would have been okay but alas they were military with military titles. I really did like the story line but they took the super human bit too far and ruined it in my opinion.

"I wanted a job. I got a murder." When makeup artist Toby Swanson joined the Fox Film Corporation in 1914, he hoped to sneak a kiss from the studio's newest star, the seductive vamp Theda Bara. But when a scene goes horribly wrong, Bara's film is cancelled and her dreams of stardom crushed. Unless. . . . . .she can prove what looked like an accident was really murder. So together, Theda and Toby dive into showbiz New York, from dancing with a young Rudolph Valentino to sharing the vaudeville stage with Sophie Tucker and learning lockpicking secrets from Harry Houdini, all leading to a long-forgotten church crypt holding a desperate secret. It's New York at the dawn of the twentieth century, a time of big bridges, big skyscrapers and big money. And it's a time when movies - the biggest new business of them all - joins hands with the oldest. The Director's Cut is the first of the Theda Bara Mysteries.

As hard to put down as whiskey, cigars and intelligent Vamps By Cleo Huggins I felt like a kid again spending long afternoons behind an Agatha Christie. Christopher recreates the silent film era and plunks me down in the middle of it. I hear a Guy Noir style sultry voice-over as Toby sorts through adventures driven by an unattainable, smart, relentless Theda Bara. The vividness and accuracy of the scenes shouldn't come as a surprise. I worked with Christopher on his website and was nearly disturbed by how much he knows about Hollywood during that period -- the famous and obscure actor and actress, exquisite details of the movie industry, the mood of the generation, the etiquette, the clothing, so many other idiosyncrasies; it's frightening really. But I couldn't have known how well The Director's Cut would bring those times to me and cast me in with the lot. The pace is quick so I seldom put it down, which is my only lament - I wanted to stay on a few more chapters and share another Dewars with Toby. I'm looking forward to Hollywood and Vain, we'll catch up then.

A Love Letter to Theda Bara By Classic Film Buff Christopher DiGrazia does a wonderful job of recreating a bygone era that has always held a great fascination for me. You can tell the author loves the silent film era and Theda Bara in particular. His research and attention to detail from clothing to vintage champagne is evident from start to finish. I love the early days of film making and reading this book put me right in the thick of it.DiGrazia's interweaving of characters and events, both real and fictitious, keeps the story interesting and makes for a fun read. Theda Bara as an early 20th century Miss Marple really works. You'll be rooting for her and her group of cinematic outcasts to flesh out the bad guys and save Fox Studios from a fate worse then foreclosure. So like Miss Bara's partner in crime solving, Toby, pour yourself "three thick fingers of scotch", light up a good cigar and enjoy this thoroughly entertaining book.

A glimpse into the beginning of the movie industry. It seems it was as filthy then as it is now. You also get a feel for the time through the verbage of the charectors, the way they dress, travel and even flirt. and the expression of a range of emotions. You will spend some time binging a few words, but it is worth your time.2) A well paced mystery, twists and turns with believable Charecters in believeable situations. Starts out a little slow, but morphs into a page turner.3) I have never read a book where an author expresses such unrequited love. He writes about her as if he had held her close, smelled her skin, kissed her lips. It's pretty special. When I finished the book I watched the silent movie "A Fool there was". It was the whipped cream on the sunday of the book. You will like this book.

MY DEAREST BARBARA ALEXIEVNA,—How happy I was last night—how immeasurably, how impossibly happy! That was because for once in your life you had relented so far as to obey my wishes. At about eight o'clock I awoke from sleep (you know, my beloved one, that I always like to sleep for a short hour after my work is done)—I awoke, I say, and, lighting a candle, prepared my paper to write, and trimmed my pen.

Poor Folk, by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

About the Author Dostoyevsky wrote intensely psychological and spiritual novels that formed part of the foundation of existentialism. Along with other liberal intellectuals, he was arrested in 1849 and sentenced to death, but his sentence was commuted, and he was exiled in Siberia for four years, followed by five years of mandatory service in the army. When he emerged from his long ordeal he faced financial problems, depression, and an addiction to gambling and wrote his most important novels.

Anyone wanting a quality version who comes across this should get it, especially considering the price. As for the book itself, as Fyodor Dostoevsky's first novel, it is certainly not on par with his later masterworks, but enough of his genius was already present to make it essential for fans, while its many and substantial differences from more representative work may well mean that those who usually dislike him will be pleasantly surprised. It is most immediately interesting as a rare example of a novel told entirely in letters. This is hard to pull off convincingly, and Dostoevsky does admirably, especially for a debut. He manages to put across a wealth of characterization and sketch a vivid background in the limited format. The former is particularly notable; psychological characterization is of course what he was later known for, and it is already present to a great extent. Alternating first-person narration gives great insight into the two main characters, who are memorable and themselves and also noteworthy as fairly representative examples of impoverished mid-nineteenth century Russians. The latter is also well-done; we get an astonishingly vivid sense of what it was like to live in this unenviable time and place in every aspect from landscape to speech. The only complaint one could make here is applicable only to technical purists; Dostoevsky never really justifies the setup. The two characters live across from each other, and though a few visits are noted in passing, it seems highly implausible that they would have to resort to writing so often, though the great verisimilitude of the letters themselves largely makes amends. There is almost no plot in the conventional sense, but we learn more and more about the characters' daily lives and relationship to each other. This is a sort of love story, and the end, while ostensibly happy for Barbara, is tragic for Makar. We may even have to rethink the former's character, as she abandons a man who not only truly cared for her but made her the beneficiary of numerous acts of charity and kindness when he could hardly afford it. Though written before Dostoevsky's Christian conversion, such noble acts and consequent self-abnegation form key parts of later works in a more spiritual sense. Here they show humanity's admirable side, especially in contrast to some of the other characters' actions. Above all, though, the book is valuable for giving a stark account of just how atrociously the lower classes lived. That such suffering existed in an ostensibly modern country so recently will be a true eye-opener for many; the wretchedness is truly great. Those who for decades championed - and in fact still champion - Czarist Russia as a beacon of liberty and equality in light of the Soviet Union's admitted horrors should read this; it gives an excellent indication of what was wrong with Czarist Russia and why it cried out for reform. This unsurprisingly leads to much pathos, and the book is highly emotional in other ways; it indeed often reaches such a fever pitch that many will cry, which shows how little this resembles later Dostoevsky. The philosophical dramatization he was later known for is absent, as is lengthy dialogue. Poor is clearly an early work for this and other reasons, primarily because his originality had yet to arise; it was written under the great influence of Nikolai Gogol, particularly "The Overcoat," and Dostoevsky was indeed first championed as the new Gogol. He became something very different, but this early production is more than worthy - required for fans and worth looking into for many others.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Told completely in a series of letters between two people and the style might not be for everyone. By E. B. MULLIGAN 1844 St Petersburg Russia the first novel by Dostoyevski and a HUGE success for this unknown working class author. This should be required reading in every High School.Makar Alekseyevich Devushkin 47 year old clerk living in abject poverty (he lives in a section of the kitchen!). The other tenants include the Gorshkovs who are so poor their son is constantly groaning in hunger! Because of his shy nature he is a target for the office bullies,Varvara Alekseyevna Dobroselova his 2nd cousin, twice removed, who lives on the same street also in poverty. Barbara (in my translation) Dobroselova is the one ray of light in Makar Devushkin,s world where he escapes his wretched living conditions in the books he so loves. Barbara father has died after losing his job and becoming a violent drunk, She and her severly depressed mother live with the abusive landlord Anna Fydorovna.*Spoilers*Barbara crushes on her tutor, the impoverished student Pokrovsky, whose father is also a drunk. Pokrovsky soon dies of illness and even his dying wish to see the sun is greeted by the sight of a gloomy sky and pouring rain. Then her mother dies! Barbara flees the landlord to live across the street with Fedora. Devushkin and Barbara exchange many letters and books. Devushkin is unable to earn enough money to keep a roof over his head and is about to be on the street, when his employer gives him 100 rubles to buy new clothes. Devushkin instead sends some to Barbara. Things are also looking up for the Gorshkovs when they receive funds from a court case, then the father dies. Finally Barbara decides to marry the horrible but middle class Mr. Bykov who will take her far away.**End Spoilers**The work has been translated to English at least 8 times (under two titles 'Poor People' and 'Poor Folk'). First published in english 50 years after it was written. The edition I read is from the Modern Library dated 1917 - it doesn't list the translator however the publisher is Boni & Liveright and research finds the translator listed as C.J. Hogarth (Charles James Hogarth, Highland Light Infantry 1890, Scott's Sharpshooters in Boer War, born 7 December 1869, educated Charterhouse, died 5 April 1945.).“Before you there lie the Steppes, my darling—only the Steppes, the naked Steppes, the Steppes that are as bare as the palm of my hand. 'There' there live only heartless old women and rude peasants and drunkards. 'There' the trees have already shed their leaves. 'There' abide but rain and cold.”“I do not know what I am writing, I never do know what I am writing. I could not possibly know, for I never read over what I have written, nor correct it's orthography. At the present moment I am writing merely for the sake of writing, and to put as much as possible into this last letter of mine. . . Ah, dearest, my pet, my own darling! . . .”

Hannibal Barca, general of the Carthaginian army, strikes terror in the hearts of his Roman foes. Hannibal is determined to march on Italy and attack the people he has pledged to hate. After a victory in Saguntum, an Iberian ally of Rome, the legendary general presses onward. Carthage’s strength and growth threaten the Roman reputation and ego, and Rome’s pride prevents any peace. It is said, “Saguntum was the flint and Hannibal the rock, but it was Roman-laid tinder that ignited.” Yet a Roman consul, Old Scipio, and his son, Young Scipio, nobles of Rome, have little fear of such an enemy. Their army is superior in weaponry and numbers, and they ride out to battle, confident in a victory. Although it seems impossible, somehow the shrewd and fearless barbarian general turns the Roman advantage on its head. A general who can successfully bring an entire army—and a herd of war-elephants—through the bitter cold and harsh conditions of the Alps is an enemy rightly to be feared. With allies like the African king Masinissa and the barbarian princess Frederix, Hannibal is poised for what history will call the Second Punic War. He neither knows nor cares about Old Scipio’s message to Carthage: “Submission or death: those are the choices Rome gives you.” He was undermanned, under-armed, and yet he would play by the rules, even if the Romans he fought would not. How could he ever expect to win? By being that damn good. His tactics would redefine war. His principals would redefine man. This thrilling novel brings to life the ancient and epic battle between General Hannibal Barca, one of the greatest generals of all time, and the might of the Roman Empire.
