The story was exciting, the characters entertaining and the romance sweet and endearing. Callum was a wonderful hero and I absolutely adored him and Mari was a strong heroine. Their chemistry could be felt from their very first meeting. The secondary characters of Alex, Duncan, Charlie and Hughie added a fun touch to the story and I enjoyed their friendly banter as it was at times humorous and very much the way it would be between true friends. There is no doubt that I will want to read the rest of the books in this series. For those who are offended by graphic love scenes, the love scenes between Callum and Mari were tastefully done, not overly descriptive. This was a wonderful story and one I highly recommend to any who love Highland historical romances.

Fun and clean with some really funny parts By Mayhemmama I really enjoy the tried and true story formula of the Scottish clan wars and romances....always good for fun, relaxing reading. This book kept my interest better than most. She also did it while keeping the book clean. There were enough twists that I was not sure how the story line was going to be resolved. There were some parts that seemed a bit weak in the storyline....things jumped around in some parts without clear explanations which is why I only gave this a 4 star rating. Otherwise I be would have gladly given it a 5.

I hung in there and was glad I did. Not the best story I've read, but it did improve the further along I went. It kept developing a better storyline as I went along with more defined characters. Love scenes were rather non-descript, but you got the message. Worth reading.

I loved the way it summarized the books in the Bible that are challenging to get through while tying them to the overarching story. The author tells funny, engaging stories that help illustrate each devotion.I have now read it twice all the way through, and plan to keep re-reading it with my morning coffee!

And has loved the book By Michelle Konson I purchased this book for my mom who is not a Christian - I have been purchasing Christian books for her for 25 years now in the hopes that she would read the truth of the Bible and come to a personal relationship with God. I gave it to her at Christmas and she told me a couple of days ago that she's almost done! And has loved the book! Wow, after 25 years of book gifts Carole was able to write such a beautiful picture of the gospel that my unbelieving mom - who is not an avid reader - was compelled to keep reading! I think this is one of the greatest endorsements for a book of this nature. I'm so grateful for Carole and her talents that she has shared with us!

Rich in atmosphere, imagination, and fun, the action-packed, magic-filled sequel to The Clockwork Dagger is an enchanting steampunk fantasy, evocative of the works of Trudi Canavan and Gail Carriger.

Narrowly surviving assassination and capture, Octavia Leander, a powerful magical healer, is on the run with handsome Alonzo Garrett, the Clockwork Dagger who forfeited his career with the Queen’s secret society of spies and killers—and possibly his life—to save her. Now, they are on a dangerous quest to find safety and answers: Why is Octavia so powerful? Why does she seem to be undergoing a transformation unlike any witnessed for hundreds of years?

The truth may rest with the source of her mysterious healing power—the Lady’s Tree. But the tree lies somewhere in a rough, inhospitable territory known as the Waste. Eons ago, this land was made barren and uninhabitable by an evil spell, until a few hardy souls dared to return over the last century. For years, the Waste has waged a bloody battle against the royal court to win its independence—and they need Octavia’s powers to succeed.

Joined by unlikely allies, including a menagerie of gremlin companions, she must evade killers and Clockwork Daggers on a dangerous journey through a world on the brink of deadly civil war.

Cato doesn’t stint on the worldbuilding but always keeps the focus on her richly developed characters. Besides the immensely appealing central couple, there is a full cast of allies and villains who keep things moving.” (Library Journal)“The sequel to Cato’s novel The Clockwork Dagger, this new installment is a fun fantasy adventure as her characters try to uncover what’s behind their powers.” (Buzzfeed)“A very satisfying conclusion to an excellent duology.” (Barnes & Noble SF&F Blog)“A reminder of how to be selfless and loving in a world that wants women clawing ruthlessly for the top.” (She Knows)“The Clockwork novels seamlessly combine magic and technology.” (SFRevu)“Beth Cato’s The Clockwork Crown is a satisfying follow-up to her Clockwork Dagger, each twist of the action pulling me deeper into the story. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Tension, excitement, heartbreak By Sara E. Bauer Tension. I mean, really, tension. I was TENSE the entire time I read this book. There is action from page one, and you're just screaming, "Give me a break!" But it's not that kind of book. This second (and closing) piece of the CLOCKWORK DAGGER series kept me enthralled. Plus, I have a totally huge teenage crush on Alonzo. On a serious note, Octavia really grew into a strong, powerful woman, willing to give up just about everything. What's that Stephen King quote? "Kill your darlings." I'm not saying everyone ends up dead, but ... tension, stress, ACTION. A heck of a read.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A satisfying end to Octavia's story By Ghoulish Gretl Medician Octavia Leander and her Clockwork Dagger Alonzo Garret have escaped from the Wasters who wanted to use her powers and are now on the run for their lives. Their former captors continue to pursue them, as do their own country’s assassins who would rather kill Octavia than let her fall into enemy hands. I was completely riveted by this action-packed story. They flee to the south into Tamarania, where Alonzo’s family keeps a home. But they never stay in one place for very long. I liked getting to see even more of Cato’s fictional world. Each of the cities has a distinct look and personality, while barren wastelands and lush forests fill the spaces in between. The Clockwork Crown incorporates new steampunk elements like giant mechanical animals that battle in an arena. The buzzers and dirigibles are still there as well, along with the gremlins. I loved seeing those adorable chimeras again and learning more about how they were made. I also liked the introduction of Alonzo’s family, as well as Mrs. Stout’s. Her relatives provide some welcome pieces of backstory and lots of surprises.I felt like the relationship between Octavia and Alonzo was a much bigger part of the story than it was in the first book, although when I re-read The Clockwork Dagger I thought the romance was more prominent than it seemed on my first reading. Octavia starts to understand her feelings and they become obvious to those around her. But Octavia wonders if she’ll survive to pursue her happily ever after, and I wasn’t so sure for a while there either.Octavia’s powers have been growing and changing. She’s being drawn to The Lady’s tree, the source of her medician magic and the object of her worship. But she’s also increasingly frustrated with The Lady who seems to be demanding too much of her. I thought it was interesting that Octavia questions The Lady but never her faith, given her society’s preference for science over magic is so often thrown in her face. It’s ironic for a steampunk novel to support an anti-modern philosophy, but I feel like that’s what happens here. The Lady also influences some of the characters who have wronged Octavia as they get a chance to atone for their actions. I wonder though, whether everyone truly gets what they deserve. I also thought a few of the supporting characters, especially the Garrets, got lost at the end of the book.I was initially disappointed that there would only be two books in this series, but so much happens in The Clockwork Crown. I thought Octavia’s story was wrapped up nicely. There’s still plenty of room for other books in this world though. I would love to see a series set at Miss Percival’s medician academy, similar to Gail Carriger’s Finishing School.Review originally published at Vampire Book Club and based on a copy provided by the publisher. - See more at: http://vampirebookclub.net/early-revi...

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Satisfying Finale By J. Cheney I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel to The Clockwork Dagger, and was delighted to see more of Leaf in this story. In this story we learn more about the truth behind Octavia's relationship with the Lady, travel through two countries and into the Wasteland, and discover more about the war that threatens Octavia's world. The author did a good job of tying everything up, and I was particularly happy with the resolution of the romance at the end.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Unusual 'game book' structure makes this mystery memorable! By Thorin N. Tatge This is an book with an unusual structure, so listen up, potential buyers--you deserve to know what you're getting. Murder at Colefax Manor is an interactive novel, meaning that you choose what the main character does and turn to the appropriate section of the book to see what happens. But even for that kind of book, its structure is unusual. Instead of being sent on wild adventures stemming from a single choice, never to return, most of your choices lead you only to a new place or to new information, which you, the detective, process. You can move between rooms and speak with suspects at your leisure, or examine objects more closely only to return whence you came afterward. Your quest, of course, is to solve the titular mystery, so in practice, the book's structure is a new way of being given the clues you might be provided with directly in a normal mystery. It lets you choose in what order to explore the estate and how deeply you wish to examine any one part of it before moving on.Most of the book takes this form--and then there are the endings and exciting parts. At first, I was disappointed to keep turning back and forth between the same sections, gathering information piece by piece and having nothing happen. But after enough time exploring, the system grew on me. The setting is well researched and feels authentic. I found myself yearning for the little tidbits I'd missed here and there. It was satisfying to be able to use clues I'd gathered (and marked off in a special section in the back for such a purpose). Once I resigned myself to spending most of the book wandering through a single quiet estate, I started to appreciate it for the unique and memorable experience it was.And then, of course, came the exciting part, in which the patterns I was used to were thrown out and I was left to fend for myself in unfamiliar territory, a refreshingly jarring contrast. The author calls this a 'game book', which seems an apt name. It reminds me of a text-and-pictures computer game--either the electronic form of the 'interactive novel', or the sort of exploration game I enjoyed on the Apple IIe whose sense of wonder (or suspense) was enhanced by its slow unfolding. Unlike other interactive novels, it doesn't have much in the way of replay value. You'll read most of the book on any one successful play. But given that ordinary books work that way too, that isn't really a problem, is it? This is just a new way of presenting a mystery, and the uniqueness of the system may well stick with you.

November 7, 1861, Federal guns demolish the Confederate forts on Port Royal Sound as white civilians flee to the mainland, abandoning their Sea Island plantations, tons of high-quality cotton, and 8,000 enslaved people. The blacks recognize the “big gun shoot” as their chance for freedom and take to the woods. But not Crecie, a St. Helena Island field hand and medicine woman. Harboring beliefs rooted in centuries of self-denigration and white supremacy, she longs for the return of her master and his orderly paternalism. The military, the government, and abolitionists—perceived by Crecie as “new masters”— commandeer the islands, providing schools, wage labor, and religious freedom. But they also bring murder, mayhem, and deception. When personal tragedy strikes, she becomes the sole provider for her family’s survival, but continues to grapple with the strange notion of self-ownership, unable to claim her own labor, her own mind, her own body. Events of the war lead to a crisis and she is forced to choose a path for her future. Will Crecie remain shackled to tradition, relying on her abolitionist employer for sustenance, or will she embrace freedom’s promises and take control of her own life?

Erickson Free To Be is an inspirational novel about Crecie, a slave on Ivy Oaks Plantation, near the end of the civil war, a time period overlooked by most writers. Ivy Oaks and the people of the surrounding island come alive under Ms. Chandler’s remarkable storytelling. This is foremost a story about a woman whose life is in turmoil, but while we follow Crecie’s journey, historical information is interwoven throughout in an entertaining way. I learned things I didn’t know about abolitionists, Frederick Douglass, President Lincoln, how the Union army operated, and how cotton ruled everything. Ms. Chandler has done the research, and it shows, but she keeps the story moving. I’ll never forget Crecie! In addition to being suited for book clubs, Free To Be would be perfect for schools looking for a well-written book about this time period.

The complex political overlay of the historical time is explained while the novel's characters are developed in a very intimate and relatable manner. This book underscores the collective and personal victories that can occur in the midst of suffering and hardship.

Her books are the only romance books I buy automatically without ever reading a review or the synopsis and I am rarely (occasionally but rarely) disappointed. Anyone who is familiar with my reviews knows I am extremely stingy with five stars. Once again Balogh has taken the injuries suffered by one of the survivors and written a wonderful book not only about him finding love, but finding forgiveness and learning to forgive himself. While Ralph is physically scarred the real issue he struggles with is survivors guilt. He watched three of his closest friends literally blown apart before his eyes, can't forgive himself and is convinced no one else can forgive him either. Chloe has her own tragedies to deal with, all the results of the actions of others, but she pays the price. Chloe, desperate to avoid the fate of a maiden aunt or spinster companion for the rest of her life, proposes an emotionally sterile marriage to Ralph who is locked out of his emotions. Ralph, while respectful and gentlemanly can be reduced to insult and nastiness and always ends up apologizing. Chloe oversteps her bounds from time to time as well. They are not perfect people and they are not going to be perfect people but none of Balogh's characters are completely good or bad. Chloe and Ralph understand the other's issues and fears far better than they understand their own and they ultimately rescue each other. By rescue we are not talking about some dastardly villainous plot - there is none. Balogh is so good at creating complex and emotional characters and stories that she does not need the melodramatic and artificial device of Gothic intrigue or over the top conspiracies much less kidnappings, victimized heroines or traumatized children and puppies. Balogh's couples do not experience love at first sight though they are very physical. This is a lovely, quiet, story of the development of the emotional bonds of a marriage that neither expected over the course of time. There are some editing issues but they are few, minor and do not detract from the experience of the story.

I have to admit that Ralph didn’t strike much of a chord with me in previous books. And when I was reminded that he was the survivor with a scar across his face, I expected a much different book. Maybe something Beauty and the Beast-y or the kind of story where everyone is repulsed by his scar and only the heroine can see the real man beneath. It was neither. Instead, the book focuses far more on our hero’s psychological scars and it’s all the better for it.Ralph doesn’t have a lot of personality for a reason. He became of shell of himself after he lost his three best friends in the war. It’s not the scars or injuries to his body that destroyed him. It was the survivor’s guilt. It drove him nearly to suicide –and the only reason he was able to overcome it was because he turned his feelings off… or very nearly so. Now his grandfather, the Duke, is edging closer to the grave and Ralph can no longer ignore his duty to marry and produce an heir. He is willing, but there is no way love can ever enter the equation.Chloe doesn’t expect marriage will ever be in her future. Two scandals tied to her family have made her quite ineligible. So now she is staying away from the ton, serving as a guest to her grandmother’s best friend. Her hostess just happens to be Ralph’s grandmother, which is ultimately how Chloe and Ralph cross paths. The two end up making a match of convenience. She gets the children and security she wants and he gets a wife willing to provide heir with no expectations of tender feelings. It takes awhile before we really begin to see Ralph’s personality. But Chloe is painted very clearly. She is practical, pragmatic, and intelligent. I loved that she took a chance and went after what she wanted. She is loyal and honorable. And though she has been dealt more than one bad hand in her life, she never rolled over and played dead. I loved the genuine affection she held for Ralph’s grandparents. I respected the way she approached her relationship with Ralph and the poise and class she displayed in difficult moments. The romance is a slow burn, but it’s worth the wait. It’s also worth the wait to see Ralph come out of his shell. These two are so good for each other and I really enjoyed watching them both realize it.This book isn’t quite as angsty as some of the other installments. I guess that is because Ralph internalizes so much. But I still enjoyed his journey and was satisfied with the HEA. Can’t wait for the next one!Rating: B/B+

By lark This story is extraordinary in that it delves so thoroughly into so many facets of the natures and suffering of the characters. We know Ralph and Chloe ~ their thoughts, their anguish, their hopes. They come alive and we're there. Only exceptional writing can do this. I enjoyed the characters' internal dialogues.....they allowed me to think along with Ralph and Chloe. From the first three Survivors novels, we know Ralph has suffered...and continues to do so. Chloe, somehow, reminds me of a bird with a broken wing. Yet she's strong and has gumption. The blurb for this novel bothered me in two areas. 1) Yes, Chloe's two Seasons were disastrous, but what disasters! Not the wallflower-sitting-by-the-wall kind of misery. ~ and 2) This one upset me ~ "And to Ralph, it was only a promise". This sentence unfairly casts aspersions on his character. Without spoiling any of the story for you, I will just say he *does* have serious responsibilities that require his presence in London. He's a good man.Ms. Balogh has such an understanding of human nature that I was engrossed by this story. It's not heavy with angst and it's not light and humorous...there's a little of both. Mostly, though, it's a story of two good people struggling to overcome their past ordeals while learning to deal well with each other...to make their "bargain", their marriage work. This novel was written with great sensitivity and understanding. And there are so many wonderful passages, I've loaded the story with bookmarks.Enjoy your reading! :)

Almost Perfect, by Denise Domning

Review "Almost Perfect is the delightful debut Regency romp by versatile author, Denise Domning ....[who] proves herself as a romance author at the top of her game. Filled with compelling, believable characters and storyline ...Whether writing Medieval, Elizabethan, or, now, Regency England and Scotland, [Ms. Domning] will capture the reader's attention from first page to last."~Freelance Reviewer, Carla Arpin"Readers will enjoy Almost Perfect - just don't play cards with Cassie."~Harriet Klausner

From the Author I must admit to really liking these two characters. Even better, their story takes place in one of the most beautiful and desolate landscape I've ever seen. The border area between Scotland and England has been a place of dissension for eons, probably starting long before the ice bridge between England and the Continent thawed. Why did Hadrian build that wall of his? Because it slows down the inhabitants from either side of the wall as they carry stolen cattle, property and, yes, women, back to their own side of the border. Of course, if we hadn't had the border folk we'd be poorer some great words, like blackmail, or games, like rugby. Lucien's lodge, the pele tower, is an actual style of home for the area. The way the hills fold behind his home is referred to as a "beef-tub", which is essentially a hidden place where the denizens who did manage to carry cattle over Hadrian's wall stashed their stolen beef. And, the abbey Devanney's house party goes off to visit is based on the lyrical ruins of Melrose Abbey. So, for what it's worth I hope you've enjoyed my stab at a Regency Era romance. Thanks for trying it!

About the Author I was ten before I realized the cosmos played a terrible joke on me. I was in the wrong century! While everyone else studied computers and listened to rock music, I wrote a history assignment in Egyptian hieroglyphics and spent endless hours designing ball gowns for Marie Antoinette. I taught myself what every true lady must know: how to sew a fine seam (by hand), to embroider skillfully, and to play an instrument (piano, and nothing later than Beethoven, thank you). I did my best to fit in with the rest of modern society, running two property management companies and inventing an electric lock, only to realize happiness for me meant historical research. Now, writing is my time machine and words recreate the vitality of eras where I feel more at home. Not only do I experience the drama of their time, but I do so with indoor plumbing. Enjoy!Denise lives on a small farm in Northern Arizona along with 100 turkeys, 3 cows, 30-some chickens, 2 dogs and 8 cats.  You can follow her exploits on her blog at thefarmonoakcreek.com

56 of 59 people found the following review helpful. It was okay By Book Lover I really expected to love this book after all the glowing reviews, but I didn't. It was just too flawed. The characters were well developed and mostly likable, but what put me off about this book was that there were wayyyy too many "misunderstandings" in this book. I realize that this is typical of 99% of romance books, but every other page Cassie misinterpreted Lucien's look, gesture, sentence, or perceived coldness toward her, etc. it was just too much! I was so frustrated with all the misunderstandings between them that it took away from the story being told. Also, another thing that is typical of romances, but this one went way overboard on is the - I love him/I hate him/I love him/I hate him thing. So frustrating! Cassie would be hopelessly "in love" one minute, then because Lucien looked at her too coldly (or some other ridiculous thing), then in less than one minute she would hate him again. I cannot believe all these other reviewers did not get frustrated by this. It was SO overdone in this book. One more thing that drove me to insanity trying to read this, was at times, the author was way too caught up in trying to be descriptive about every tiny detail. For instance, 75% of the book took place in a friends home (estate), so one wouldn't think that in the last few chapters when the book is trying to build up anticipation of the ending, that we again have to sit thru how exactly the foyer looked when they were all walking in to a much anticipated card game, I mean really? We had already spent nearly the whole book in that home, did we really need to have it described again? Exasperating! Did anyone really care what color the walls were or what kind of little trinkets were sitting around, as we were anticipating the final card game?I didn't really mean to write this much, but once I started, it all came flowing out!:) To sum it up, the story itself isnt too bad, the characters are mostly likable, but there was just too much JUNK in the story to say it was good. If a good editor would've cleaned it up, it might have been a good read.

24 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Reading People By OnTheMark Denise Domning's Almost Perfect is an entertaining Regency read rich in descriptive detail. The author endears us to the hero, Lucien Hollier, who was in love with Cassie Conningsby six years ago. He didn't request her hand because of her reprobate father's reputation. Instead he married an "appropriate" woman and lived to regret his choice when she fell prey to a lascivious Earl.Cassie also married unhappily, heartbroken over Lucien's rejection. Both are now widowed and their paths cross again.Their tortuous journey to admit they are still deeply in love and can commit to each other despite society's disapproval is undertaken amid a rich cast of supporting characters. Lucien and Cassie seemed destined to constantly misinterpret each other's actions. The plot revolves around Cassie's extraordinary ability to win at cards and the theme of reading people correctly is used cleverly and to great effect. The story heightens our awareness of the vulnerability of women to the consequences of the actions of men who hold sway over them. This novel is an interesting departure from Domning's very enjoyable medieval books.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. enjoyable read By Jo What started as a quick way to pass time became an obsession to see what came next. The book follows the standard love-hate theme all romance books follow, but the heroine is not only someone I can identify with, but better. The love interest does have faults, but so does everyone. This book is worth the price if Regencies are a genre you love. It is worth a try even if they aren't a favorite.

The winter of 2016, called Black Winter, triggers the beginning of the end of modern civilization due to natural gas depletion. Millions freeze to death, millions more lose their jobs. Coupled with an oil embargo in the Middle East, and North America is in economic collapse. Riots abound.

China, hungry for oil and raw materials, uses the chaos in the United States to invade Canada to get at the forests, farmlands and above all the Canadian tar sands for the oil. They must be stopped. This sparks a world war.

A father and son team, from a small town in southwestern Ontario, join in the fight to repel the invaders. During their year-long journey through the Rockies and into the north lands of Alberta, they discover first-hand the impact and effects of peak oil on the people they meet along the way. This includes what happens in hospitals, to those in jails, to roving gangs who take over and rule like dictators, to those dedicated to preserving some part of the past, to the kindness that exists in some people regardless of the hardships they face.

During their journey, they meet people whom they become friends with, to subsequently have them separated due to events they cannot control.

One finds out that he has no problem doing his job, in fact realizes he is a natural, and in his true realm. The other thought he could kill, but finds out during their trip that he can't do it. The two understand the other, but often lock horns over their differences.

The big dilemma for the defenders is how to stop the invaders from coming through the Rockies. This problem is exacerbated by the limited fuels available for military machinery. High tech military might is useless without the oil that runs it. This means more feet on the ground than technological superiority. Volunteers are needed on a massive scale to help the defenses, but one of the characters just does not believe in playing by the rules and wants to act on his own. This leads to conflicts between him and the military command.

Blinding White Flash is a fascinating account of what could happen in a future world-wide war over resources. Its relevancy to the events of today will having you thinking...

Richard Wakefield, has created a masterpiece about the lengths ordinary citizens will go to in order to defend their country from foreign invasion. While many books in the military/war/action-adventure genre are thrilling to read, "Blinding White Flash" thrusts the reader into the heart of war with all of its pain, bloodshed as well as heroism and valor. Wakefield gets down to the nitty gritty of the conflict between the force made up largely of Canadian volunteers who give blood, sweat and tears to stop the Chinese government from seizing Canada and its resources. It's obvious that Mr. Wakefield has a strong knowledge not only of weaponry but military history and strategy as well. The battle scenes are gripping and spellbinding at the same time: the intensity, the hardships the men endure are all captured. The tone of "Blinding White Flash" truly fits the description of war: bloody, traumatizing, at times heart-wrenching. No punches are pulled here. The characters in the book display the type of selfless valor and bravery that has exemplified the Canadian soldier from the trenches of Vimy Ridge to Afghanistan. In my opinion, "Blinding White Flash" should be either a blockbuster movie or a television series. In some ways, this larger-than-life story resembles Leo Tolstoy's iconic tale of love and fighting War and Peace. Like the Russian soldiers who fought valiantly to drive Napoleon's forces from their land (and did 150 years later when Hitler invaded the Soviet Union) the Canadian fighters are often outgunned and outnumbered by superior Chinese forces. Also, they use the brutal cold of the Canadian winter as a very effective weapon against the invaders. From start-to-finish, "Blinding White Flash" holds the reader in its grip and doesn't let go.

We march into the unknown By WJD "We march into the unknown" - some of the last words written to his adoring wife by the book's main protagonist, Ben. Somewhat ironic given that Wakefield integrates a number of society's current shortcomings to synthesize a future which is as depressing as it is possible and perhaps even predictable. The end of oil, the impact of religion, political and financial misdeeds and systemic failings all combine to bring about a series of frightening and deadly events as related primarily through Ben's eyes. An excellent first effort in the science-fiction/science-fact arena.

An Epic Journey By Brendan Spillane In this not-so-brave new world, Blinding White Flash has an intense pace, an elegant and minimal writing style, and searing action centered around a ragtag band of men protecting the life and country they love. J. Richard Wakefield is one of the most promising and startling new voices in action fiction.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE AND MISSION OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST?

“Since Christ loved the church enough to die for her, every believer ought to share that passion. Jeffrey Johnson clearly does, and I believe you will find his enthusiasm contagious.” John MacArthurIn the Foreword he wrote for The Church: Why Bother?, Dr. Richard Belcher states, “This is the day and age of lawlessness and looseness both outside of God’s church and inside as well.” How heart-breaking, yet, how true. Everywhere we look these days, it seems there are “churches,” gatherings in the name of Jesus Christ, that more closely resemble the sinfulness of the unbelieving, Christ-rejecting world than the Lord and Savior who purchased His beloved church with his death and atoning blood. Today, more than ever, is a clear need for Christians to understand the nature, purpose, and functions of the local church.

What are some of the questions to be answered concerning a biblical understanding of the local church?

  • Are Christians required to join themselves to a local church?
  • What are the responsibilities of church membership?
  • How is the church to be governed?
The Church: Why Bother? provides clear biblical instruction upon...1. The NATURE of the Local Church versus the emphasis some place on the facilities wherein congregations gather.2. The PURPOSE of the Local Church in standing firm for the truth and fostering unity and community in the pursuit of purity and holiness.3. The CULTURE of the Local Church in its motives and motivations versus minimizing the holiness of God’s people and the unholiness of the world.4. The ACTIVITIES of the Local Church in our worship of God through preaching the Word, prayer, fellowship, ordinances and song versus a focus and emphasis on programs.5. The WORSHIP of God in the Local Church with attention to God through Christ as opposed to an emphasis upon self; of striving for biblical regulated worship in our services than a free-for-all that falls far short of the glory of God.And much, Much MORE...

THE CHURCH: Why Bother?: The Nature, Purpose, & Functions of the Local Church, by Jeffrey D. Johnson

Review "Pastor Jeffrey Johnson offers a concise, sobering, and eye-opening message for a generation in need of ecclesiological reformation." ~Voddie Baucham Jr. "As a Reformed Christian I found especially valuable his emphasis on the holiness of the church and its worship as ordained by God's holy Word and lived out in His holy presence." ~Joel Beeke "I am glad to recommend this new book by Jeffrey Johnson. Here is a book which every member of every Baptist church (and even some other denominations) need to read and apply to their churches and their lives." ~Richard P. Belcher Sr. "Jeffrey Johnson has written a book on the church that is short enough to read right now, clear enough to be understood and important enough to help many of us follow Jesus Christ as He intended-- as members of His church.  Why not read it now?" ~Mark Dever "In understandable, straight-forward chapters, the nature and practice of church life is explained so that even the newest of believers may comprehend." ~Jim Elliff  "This excellent book shines the clear light of Scripture on those and many other questions." ~John MacArthur

Brogden The table of contents highlights key areas of ecclesiology that gives the reader high hopes from the beginning. In his Introduction, Johnson rightly begins with a contrast between “easy-believism” and “Lordship salvation”, describing the link between one’s view of soteriology and ecclesiology. A low view of God brings about easy-believism and a hatred for the sovereignty of God. In his discussion of Lordship salvation, the author explains the biblical view of this transaction – such that no one reading would be able to keep their straw-man view of Lordship salvation (professing it is works-based) in hand. Grace alone accompanied by repentance – a stark contrast to the normal process of decisional regeneration. The Introduction comes to a satisfying close by telling us the reason for the book: to “show how a high view of God and a low view of man should shape our understanding of the nature, purpose and functions of the local church.” To that end, Johnson has review questions at the end of each chapter, for group discussions. Furthermore, each chapter has a sub-title, providing insight to what lies ahead.Chapter 1 (“Wow, What Nice Facilities You Have”) focuses on the nature of the church; Johnson provides a solid, biblical portrayal of the New Testament church, as a Truth bearer comprised of justified, sanctified believers who are united for the life of the brotherhood and proclamation of God’s Word. Frank Viola should read this book :-) Chapter 2 (“Church, Why Are We Here?”) is all about the purpose of the church – to glorify God by upholding the Truth, bringing the saints to maturity, and to evangelize the lost. This is accomplished by standing firm on the whole counsel of God’s Word, fostering holiness in its members. Chapter 3 (“Culturally Acceptable, I Mean ‘Relevant’”) then tells us the nature of the church. Johnson draws a clear line between God’s prescription and description of the church and natural man’s view with this piercing analysis: “When the line between a holy church and secular world is blurred, undoubtedly the church will become anthropocentric (man-centered) rather than Christocentric (Christ-centered).” The chapter is a fine description of both sides of this issue, leaving no doubt where Truth lies – the church must reflect Christ if it to bring glory to God or be any good to man.Next, in chapter 4 (“Programs, Programs, Programs”), the author reviews the activities of the church. Rather than embracing myriad programs of all stripes to reach the culture, the church has 5 basic activities for use in fulfilling the first and most important part of its two-fold mission(to glorify God): to worship God 1) by preaching the Word; 2) through prayer; 3) through fellowship; 4) through the ordinances; and 5) through song. There may be other activities in a church, but they must not be permitted to overshadow these 5 or push them aside. This leads to the next chapter (#5 – “Hey God, Look at Me Worship”), which covers worship. Johnson provides 6 aspects of right worship – all of which are from, through, and to God and Christ. He then defends “Biblical Regulated Worship” with 6 principles, including a detailed examination of the need for holiness and demand that it not be sensual. His 5th principle is one that would benefit many in the home-church movement – worship must be orderly. Lastly, he re-emphasizes the reality that any worship of God that does not come from His Holy Word is the product of man’s imagination and not fit for use in His body; the church does not have the authority to be creative in worship.Chapter 6 (“Drive-thru Membership”) is about membership, emphasizing the importance of belonging – in contrast to the cultural concept of association by convenience. Johnson describes the terrible impact of post-modern, self-absorbed thinking which reduces membership to a social experiment. He moves on to describe the spiritual union enjoyed by those in the local church, which is the result of the Holy Spirit working therein. This chapter has a rather long and beneficial description of the necessity, seriousness, responsibilities and privileges, and terms of church membership. The section on responsibilities and privileges details responsibilities toward God, one another, church leadership and those outside the church. This leads naturally to the discussion in chapter 7 (“Church Discipline, What’s That?”) on church discipline, starting with this: “The church must deal with the leaven before it contaminates the spiritual integrity of the whole church (1 Cor 5:7-8).” The author provides 5 steps of church discipline; describes the attitude of church discipline; the purpose, authority, and efficacy of church discipline. All of this is founded on Scripture and reasoned faithfully.Authority within the church is the subject of chapter 8 (“The Survey, ‘Says’”), in which Johnson begins by summarizing the nature of the church (covered in chapter 1) and quickly moves to a short examination of cultural influences that undermine the authority God has given each church; summing it thusly: “The church abrogates its authority by putting the potential visitor in charge.” He then provides a concise review of the biblical authority in each church followed by a good review of the basic government thereof. The chart comparing qualifications for elders and deacons is very helpful to anyone studying the two offices of the church. A large bit of this chapter is devoted to describing the pastor – he is called by God, called to be shepherds, called to serve, called to preach, called to counsel, and called to live an exemplary life. Our author then provides a short summary the responsibilities of elders and of church members (using the unfortunate term “laity”). This chapter is packed with much good information not found nor discussed in many churches, as so many are allergic to spiritual authority.Chapter 9 (“We Need Concession, Not Confessions”) – the last chapter of the book – discusses doctrinal standards within the church. Johnson begins by examining how many churches have abandoned confessions in favor of vague, ambiguous statements motivated by (1.) indifference, (2.) ignorance, (3.) pragmatism, and (4.) mysticism. This chapter is focused on mysticism, as the author believes it to be the root of the others. He gives short reviews of the first 3 rationales and moves to a somewhat longer review of mysticism, describing its nature, its influence, and the corrective action. Johnson admits some parallels between Christianity and mysticism, acknowledging the saving knowledge one has of Christ cannot be communicated to others; knowing Christ is a gift from God to each one called. Yet God is – within limits He established – knowable by man in general and in a saving way by the elect. This is the conflict with mysticism, which is founded on the presumption of the ultimate unknown being that which is sought. The fact that man cannot know God completely does not make mysticism correct, as God is known by many and can be known. Johnson uses this confusion in the ranks as a platform to encourage the use of confessions – to equip the saints with biblical truth upon which their experiences and emotions are rooted. That of God which is knowable is summed up in a good confession and this provides a useful tool to defend against mindless chatter about “just being biblical” or “all I need is Jesus”. We do need to be biblical and Christians do need Jesus – but we must be equipped by the biblical revelation, not led astray by human ignorance. Not to be overlooked is the appendix, which provides excellent tools helpful in generating a church membership agreement, outlining responsibilities of church and members. Those churches which have neglected the serious aspect of membership would benefit greatly from a close study of this entire book, including the appendix. For a short book, this book is a great resource for any pastor or church member who wants to better understand what the Word of God says about His church. It is easy to grasp the author’s message and short enough for even the post-modern ADHD adult to get through. It will benefit the soul of anyone who reads it. May God use this book for His glory and the good of His people.

It tells the reader exactly what to look for when evaluating a local body in clear scriptually accurate benchmarks. If your church is lacking or lazy in any of the highlighted areas, you will be convicted to encourage a return to historically correct and time proven structure, and be as shocked as I was how little most of our modern churches adhere to their roots in an effort to relate to a Godless culture. Well. worth the read, and a joy to read over and over to solidify the teaching contained within.

It is a concise, well-written, surprisingly thorough, and, more importantly, thoroughly Scriptural manual for ecclesiological instruction. It also relates the teaching of Scripture to current issues facing the churches. I have used the first edition as an aid in discipling believers, and I look forward to using the second edition as well. I wholeheartedly recommend the book for every believer. A job well done!
