The lake was flat and calm, with barely a ripple. Its dark waters glistening, reflecting the moonlight as though it were a mirror. Fritz Marschall knew that neither he, nor his friend, should really have been there. They, like many others before them, had been attracted to the lake by the many rumors that had been circulating. He thought of the endless stories there had been, of treasures sunken in, or buried around the lake. He recalled the stories of the lake being used to develop torpedoes and rockets during the war. Looking out across the dark water, he wondered what secrets were hidden beneath the surface.

There were rumours after the Second World War about treasures taken from the Jews and the Kammersee Affair explores one way that the action could have taken place by piecing together some facts with fiction and where the valuables could have been hidden. The setting is the Kammersee Lake in picturesque Austria. At the beginning of the book, it is after the war and two curious divers are exploring and investigating the Lakes in the hope of finding treasure when a descendant of a man based at the site during the war trialling explosives, joins them with further information which his father had written about. In letters sent home from the War The action then takes place in the book in flashback as we experience the war ending and the Americans marching into Austria. During the mayhem of trying to hide heavy wooden crates, four Americans descending on the Lake, were shot. The circumstances of one of these deaths, actually caused by a SS sniper, later comes back to haunt the main characters who try to cover up that he was actually caught by at the Lake nearby and not at Kammersee. The sergeant assumes that the actual treasure could be hidden at the other Lake and wants to leave it open to retrieve the bounty themselves at a later time. The book was interesting all the way through. Was Nazi treasure hidden there at Lake Kammersee? If so, was it gold bullion and has it been previously retrieved? This is the first book I have read of John Holt's and I was spellbound throughout. I think the suspense and mystery and the actual flashbacks to the supposed real action during World War 11, made the characters and plot believable and I would recommend this story to all ages.

McCullough I love this book.I've read all John Holt's other books - I think his Columbo-type detective, Tom Kendall, is an excellent creation, both amusing and clever - but this is, to me, his best book yet. It's usually men who mostly enjoy books about war. But, as a Biggles fan in my youth, I still love this sort of thing, provided it's not too gory. And The Kammersee Affair is an excellent example of the genre. John Holt has researched his subject carefully, and has mixed in facts and fiction very successfully. I remember reading the first chapter of this book on Night Reading, a year or so ago, and I was impressed with it then. Now, reading the whole book, I am even more impressed. This is a book to be enjoyed and savoured. The description of Fritz sitting beside the lake in the beautiful evening setting is one to linger in the memory for a long time. But suddenly there is the alert - something is wrong with Fritz's friend and fellow diver, Karl. Karl's foot is trapped in the rubble down below the lake's surface. Then comes Fritz's breathtaking rescue of Karl, and the book changes in a few seconds from beautiful description to horrifying action, and its results. We are already hooked by the possibility of these two youngsters discovering German gold when Hans Mueller appears, and the excitement shoots up a notch. Mueller has extra information - and he also has a personal interest - his father is the Sergeant who fought on this spot at the end of the war.I don't want to write any spoilers. Sufficient to say that this book has enough twists and turns to keep anyone reading, and with the double hooks of the hidden gold and Mueller's personal links, it kept me breathless until the unexpected ending. Highly recommended!

Lake Kammersee is much smaller, located less than half a mile eastward.Amateur treasure hunters and professional divers explore the lakes looking for crates of the last gold reserves of the Third Reich. Some counterfeit money has been found, and also some old information records, but careless or inexperienced divers have also lost their lives.John Holt's novel whisks us backward to 1943. Dr. Franz Jungen has been placed in charge of a testing facility vital to the Nazi war effort. Adolf Hitler's signature is on the bottom of the order. Polish prisoners were used. "Oh yes, people had been hurt, some of them quite badly." The facility was completed and the torpedoes were delivered the first week of November 1943. Numerous tests, some successful, others with a hint of sabotage were conducted. Tests with conventional torpedoes and trading V2 rocket with a special launch platform were conducted.Several convoys of trucks arrived with mysterious crates aboard, all ordered to be stored. In May 1945, orders arrived to close down the facility. Everything was to be destroyed by burning, with explosives, or by dumping into the lake.SS Major Dietrich Hartman becomes instrumental in hiding fifty crates of gold bullion bars. He is captured by American soldiers, then escapes and changes his name to hide his identity.Several murders occur. This novel becomes a history lesson thriller with multilayered, and inextricably entwined parts, each with in depth coverage to establish needed connections. Excellent.

I am not generally a fan of Westerns so I was a bit nervous when it began, only to realize it was going places I never expected (which is the fun or reading, no?). All in all I can't wait for the full-length novel & future short stories from this author on this theme!

But now I want to know a lot more because Silver takes us to that time and re-imagines the real-life cast of characters in an entirely new way. If you liked Abraham Lincoln as a Vampire Hunter then you will love this. Highly recommend.

Ok - nothing real special By Amazon Customer A recent Kindle edition freebie.Tells the story of some underclass British boys who join the army in 1914 to go fight the Germans. Most of this work tells the story of their bleak lives just before joining the army and their even bleaker lives in the army.None of the story is very pleasant to read, and I suspect that part of it is pretty realistic. Some of the military stuff is a little harder to buy into. Corporals keep referring to themselves as commanding officers and other little things that seem unlikely keep popping up.So, I gave it 3 stars. It was readable. It had a lot of potential but it never quite developed that potential to become a better book.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely wonderful read. By Rosemary M. Goddard The year is 1914 and there is a war going on. Most young boys during this time period have given up on school to go to work in factories. The characters in this book Danny and Charlie, twins from a family of 6 boys whose father has passed away, are no exception. They spend their day peddling cigarettes and getting into trouble. Reading this book you can tell that the author put a lot of time into researching this period of world history. The characters are well developed as is the story line. Anyone who likes to read about historical fiction from this time period will enjoy reading this book.

16 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully Told! By Kevin Lintner "1914" is a fantastic book. It seems World War I has all but been forgotten when it comes to historical fiction. The Revolutionary War gained the US its freedom from England, the Civil War brought an end to slavery, Word War II will forever be remembered for the horrors of the holocaust, and Vietnam is the war that divided a nation. Not too many people talk about World War I, it is usually not more than a paragraph on a history textbook. Yet there were 37 million casualties of war making it one of the most devastating wars in world history.James Farmer captures that desperation and terror perfectly from life as civilians to the brutality of the killing fields. "1914" is incredibly well written with richly developed characters, believable dialogue and a story line that keeps you engaged all the way to the end. There are many more books in "The War Years" series and I am going to read them all as time permits.

"There are rules for private informers accepting a new case. Never take on clients who cannot pay you. Never do favours for friends. Don't work with relatives. If, like me, you are a woman, keep clear of men you find attractive. "Will I never learn?"

In Ancient Rome, the number of slaves was far greater than that of free citizens. As a result, often the people Romans feared most were the "enemies at home," the slaves under their own roofs. Because of this, Roman law decreed that if the head of a household was murdered at home, and the culprit wasn't quickly discovered, his slaves―all of them, guilty or not―were presumed responsible and were put to death. Without exception.

When a couple is found dead in their own bedroom and their house burglarized, some of their household slaves know what is about to happen to them. They flee to the Temple of Ceres, which by tradition is respected as a haven for refugees. This is where Flavia Albia comes in. The authorities, under pressure from all sides, need a solution. Albia, a private informer just like her father, Marcus Didius Falco, is asked to solve the murders, in this mystery from Lindsey Davis.

Review

“Davis combines excellent research, expansive knowledge, and vivid writing to immerse readers in ancient Rome. The people and the places of the city seem both authentic and familiar...a great read!” ―Library Journal on The Ides of April

“The Flavia Albia series promises to be every bit as exciting and enduring as the Falco mysteries.” ―Booklist (starred review)

“Davis delights. . .with her trademark blend of quirky characters and rich period detail. Readers can anticipate Flavia Albia to be a compelling presence for years to come.” ―Booklist (starred review) on Ides of April

“Flavia proves a worthy successor to her wily father and, as always, under all the excitement runs the solidity of Davis's historical knowledge” ―The Independent (UK) on The Ides of April

“Flavia Albia makes her debut courtesy of the author of the long-running Marcus Didius Falco series (Nemesis, 2010, etc.). This installment includes the same helpful map of the city and cast of characters and a feistier style…Flavia demonstrates appealing wit and grit.” ―Kirkus Reviews on The Ides of April

“Entertaining … taut and deftly woven. Albia is a witty and attractive addition to the roster of his family and as ever with a Davis novel―the narration is done so delightfully that the final impression is curiously warm and uplifting.” ―The Guardian (London) on The Ides of April

“Davis ingeniously breathes life into her Ancient Rome series…Provides hope that Flavia could have as long a literary run as Marcus” ―Publishers Weekly on The Ides of April

“Davis's sequel to 2013's The Ides of April boasts a strong female lead, [and]… vividly portrays the setting, ‘a poisoned city, where a paranoid emperor had caused often-lethal mistrust,'” ―Publishers Weekly on Enemies at Home

24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. "Every slave is an enemy" (Seneca) By travelswithadiplomat Flavia Albia returns for her second adventure. This time the meiosis and tapinosis of her vernacular has gone, to be replaced with a more wry, intelligent assessment of her Roman city folk. Which is a vast improvement on her introduction in “The Ides of April” where the novel suffers so much from a caustic tone that I very nearly didn’t read this sequel. I am glad I did pick this up because it is much more Falco-like, the mystery is confusingly brilliant, the wit has just that right blend of acerbity and tongue-in-cheek humour that had us scrambling to buy the next Falco novel. The novel opens fairly swiftly with a triple murder on the Esquiline. It looks like a robbery gone wrong, what with the disappearance of a fine haul of silverware but there’s something nagging Albia about the deaths of Valerius Aviola, his new bride Mucia Lucilia, and a door porter named Nicostratus. The former have been strangled, the latter bashed in with a plank. In the interim a fair few of the suspects – a gaggle of terrified household slaves - have taken refuge in the sanctum of the Aventine’s Temple of Ceres. The case has been tasked to Titianus, vigile of the Second Cohort but Albia finds her simmering love possibility of Tiberius Manlius Faustus – plebeian aedile – asking her to investigate, setting up her up in the guest-room of the Aviola’s house and lending her his sixteen year old slave Dromo to provide daily reports. All of which is really an excuse for him to spend time with her.Albia drags in some family help in the form of her two uncles: Aulus and Quintus. The latter who advises that “’Remember the proverbial answer – the cup bearer did it.’” Not quite true in this case, but it means the author can bind the reader tightly to the nostalgia of Falco (Helena Justina even makes an appearance at the dysenteric dénouement), a familiarity that makes us even more comfortable with the story. The novel then plunges into an intellectual sleuthing. Albia embarks on conducting aural investigations, visiting trustees, wading through the complex relationships that comprise a Roman household, dangerously intercepting hardened gang members in dodgy pubs, visiting baths to glean information, and having drunken female soirees. All of which draws an almighty blank until a dog lead finally points us in the right direction. Not before another murder and an unfortunate suicide have occurred. The suspects far outnumber the rest of the cast. Headed by Polycarpus - the household steward – and his wife Graecina there is also the elderly Amethystus – general worker; youthful Daphnus – attendant; Phaedrus, a door porter who loathes his door colleague Nicostratus primarily because they both are in lust with Amaranta, the luscious personal attendant to Mucia Lucilia; the philosopher Chrysodorus, Daphnus’ brother Melander who is a scribe; the virginal and naïve Olympe – terribly flute player; Diomedes who is a gardener who needs to be put out to pasture; the hugely pregnant (she gives birth during the novel) and utterly horrible Myla and, finally, Libycus – the personal attendant to the now dead Valerius Aviola. There are some assorted other characters associated with Aviola’s previous wife, Galla Simplica, and a few tenants in the houses next door to the murder scene. All of these add up to a list of possible suspects so long the action of novel is concerned with discerning motive and alibi rather than racing around Rome.Albia can sniff out a conspiracy of silence, the problem is no one’s prepared to say anything because the slaves all know the fate that will befall them. The novel has some modern concepts that don’t particularly sit well in ancient Rome; references, for instance to a “take-out waiter (who would be annoyed because he lost his tip).” or use of the terms “mezzanine”, “doily”, “squaddies”, and “witches”. There are also some spelling errors: “had had a”, “signifi-cant”, “deserts”, “perman-ent”. Most amusingly, there are several references to faecal matter as “pooh.” – I am sure A. A. Milne might be equally pleased his favourite bear makes an appearance in Rome, yet irritated at the means by which he does so.This is a fine sequel by Lindsey Davis and any Falco fan should pick this one up. Forget the first, it’s terrible, but this gives hope that the ‘Falco Next Generation’. The novel is, as Albia realises:“at its heart a genuine tragedy. It mattered that I should name whoever burst into Mucia Lucilia’s bedroom, killed her man and put that rope around her neck. It mattered too, that if people should have helped her, I should identify them too.”Yes indeed. It matters also, that we readers, follow her on this mystery.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Davis hits her stride.. By C. Crabtree The first Flavia book was terrible. I missed Falco and Helena Justina and found Albia bitter, with an immaturity I couldn't believe came from a daughter of my heroes from previous books. This Albia is much more palatable. She shows a bit of vulnerability and emotion completely necessary for a successful series. I'm so grateful! Being a huge fan of Davis, I would've been distraught had the writing not improved. Another book or two and I'm sure Albia will become as dear to me as father Falco.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Enemies At Home By Erik Peterson Flavia Albia is a worthy successor to her adoptive father Marcus Didius Falco. And Lindsey Davis deserves special kudos for tackling head on in this book the subject of slavery, which up till now in the Falco / Albia series has been just another part of the background noise she has brought so fully to life in her re-creation of Imperial Rome. She avoids stereotyping or preaching, but rather gets down to the nitty-gritty of how that institution must have actually played out in the lives of both slave and slave owner - in this case, by launching a double-murder mystery in the context of slaves possibly having killed their master-and-mistress.But did they? And if so, why? Then of course there is the love interest - let's hope so, anyway! My wife is a big fan of Manlius Tiberius Faustus, and I'll have to say I'm rooting for him too. But what does Flavia think? You'll just have to read this book and find out!

Florida has so many different ecological niches that a one size fits all approach doesn't work. This book will show you how to fine tune "Florida Natural". It is the most complete book available, but is lacking in information on some wild plants, such as the pawpaw tree and its edible fruits and lovely blooms. (A real favorite in my garden.) In spite of these shortcomings, it is the best book on the market. I was able to use this book along with a Florida Aududon guide to collect seeds from the wild and harvest some plants at building sites about to be razed. This was a big savings over a nursery. Further, besides the savings in water bills, the upkeep is minimal. We have 4 acres and went natural and were able to get rid of our gardener. We have noticed and influx of butterflies and birds in our yard, along with other woodland animals. This book will help you create your own Eden the natural way. Highly recommend.

Actually, it provides a compact but comprehensive overview of the significant differences between creating a natural landscape with native plants vs. a conventional contemporary Florida landscape of decorative exotics. It will give you a context within which the other native plant books can become useful to you.

I purchased this together with Native Florida Plants, Revised Edition: Low Maintenance Landscaping and Gardening by Robert G Haehle. The two together are wonderful. I'm sorry I did not get them years ago.

In this historically accurate work of fiction, readers follow the journey of Afrika, an African man descended from an emperor who is first enslaved and then given his freedom by white men.

Captured in Africa and transported across the ocean to the Americas, Afrika’s captors sell him to a German-born plantation owner in Georgia who becomes a father figure to him. A learned man, he teaches Afrika the value and power of an education, instilling in him a love of learning and starting him on a path toward intellectual freedom even before he gains his physical freedom.

As Afrika’s journey continues, he meets a variety of people from different backgrounds who introduce him to new ideas. An English-born abolitionist in New York City, a French intellectual with revolutionary leanings in Montreal, and visits to renowned institutions of learning in Paris and London make a deep impact on Afrika.

These encounters shape Afrika’s view of the world as it is—and inform his vision of how the world should be. Consequently, as his understanding of politics and philosophy grows, so does his involvement in the revolutions in the United States, France, and Haiti.

Mitchell's "Afrika's Struggle: His Experiential Journey" was an emotionally jarring read that stimulated the activist in me! I didn't know what to expect before I read this book but I have been taught, scandalized, romanced and tearful during the relationships I built with the characters in this story. Cleverly, Mitchell juxtapositions Afrika, the man along with Africa, the land which highlights a historic struggle through the evolution of Afrika, the man. This story hasn't been told quite this way before. Not only will the pages of the book fly by as you read but the message of the story will haunt your thoughts. I recommend this book to anyone who considers themselves a history buff, enjoys gritty adventure, colorful language and has an overactive imagination, such as myself, so that they may envision the lavish scenes that played in my mind during Afrika's journey.

AFRIKA'S STRUGGLE HIS EXPERIENTIAL JOURNEY By Jennifer Depass Through the eyes of Afrika a slave, he took me on a journey of his struggles of survival from Afrika to Europe, America and the Caribbean during the time of slavery. He was the main character along with his adapted father and godfather. His adapted father gave him his wide education that helps to molds him in a very smart, smooth and cunning genius of a man. Afrika, was my favorite character, even though his struggles were treacherous he had many adventures Planning uprising and adventures of love especially with Countess Helene de Gramont it was hot. I like this book it is a easy read. I am reading it again. I would recommend this book as a history book in an adventurous style and a literature review.

Afrika, a direct descendant of an African emperor, was taken captive at a young age and transported to America to live a life of slavery. Protected by the Gods and destined to lead, his journey takes him to a life unlike no other slave. The writer very cleverly, gives you history lessons filled with intrigue and a little romance. This is not the average book on slavery. I would love if this book became a movie.

It’s just after midnight and Abigail Welles has just fallen to her death. Normally, this might not be such a huge deal, but Abigail just happens to be the richest girl in the world. The day she turned 21, she inherited millions upon millions of dollars. Growing up, Abigail was dubbed “Poor Little Rich Girl”, because at the age of 9, she lost her dad & just 2 years later she lost her mom. Upon finding Abigail’s body laying on the ground, Sean Costigan and Trixxie Frank try to figure out what exactly happened. Sean is a police officer, while Trixie is a newspaper reporter. Sean and Trixie are also a couple. Sean is pretty quick to rule out Abigails death being an accident/suicide and his prime suspect has become Mr. Nick Welles. Nick is Abigails husband of just about 6 months. Mr. Welles also shares a past with Trixie Frank.I really enjoyed this book. I read it up until I went to bed one night & I dreamed about what happened with Abigail. The relationships between Abigails family and husband made me keep guessing and I honestly had NO clue who or what was behind her death until the end.Trixie is a very likeable character, as is Sean. I’ve not gotten the chance to read book 1, It Had to Be You, but the first chance I get, I will be getting it to read! I can’t wait for more from this author.I love books where I don’t know what was going to happen & books that keep me guessing. Goodbye Tootsie was just that. I thought I knew who the murderer was, but I was so wrong. On many different occasions. When the murderer was announced, I was absolutely FLOORED!Well Done!!Book received in exchange for honest opinion. Opinions are still true & 100% my own.

Great setting; fun mystery By Monica Set in the opulent 1920s, tabloid reporter Trixie and her romantic interest, police detective Sean Costigan, both set their sights on unraveling the mysterious death of a young heiress. As they continue their investigations, the pair uncovers family secrets and dark pasts that may relate to the heiress’s death.I really enjoyed reading this book. The setting is awesome–just turn on some jazz and you’ll be transported back to the Roaring Twenties. Trixie was very enjoyable as a character, and I found myself wanting to know more about her. (I found out later that this is the second book in the series, and you can in fact learn more about Trixie’s background in the first book–details below!) I didn’t enjoy Sean’s character as much, though, since he often seemed to belittle Trixie’s chosen career and even her family background. Still, I enjoyed the two as a couple; just be forewarned about a couple of mildly explicit romance/sex scenes, if you’re not into that sort of thing. The mystery itself is also interesting and enjoyable. It’s full of juicy secrets and lots of suspects–including one suspect whom Trixie is closer to than Sean expected. But all of that pales in comparison (at least for me) to the setting. Late nights filled with dancing and drinking, grand mansions, gorgeous dresses and jewelry… This book lets you slip into another time and immerse yourself in that world.*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

Her boyfriend, Sean Costigan, has recently been promoted to homicide detective. They both find themselves at the scene of a supposed suicide. Abigail Whittaker Stewart Welles, on her 21st birthday fell, jumped, or was pushed from a 19th story balcony of the Cleveland hotel. She was beautiful, newly-married, and one of the richest women in the world. She was called the Poor Little Rich Girl by the press because she had lost her father at age 9 and her mother 2 years later. Suspects abound and Sean and Trixie both try to look into the death from their own perspectives. At the same time they struggle with their own relationship.I really liked the characters of Sean and Trixie. The convoluted relationships among the victim's family and friends really kept me guessing. Throw in a spiritualist, a seance, a hidden diary, a secret will, enough motives to stymie anyone, and you have a rollicking good read.I almost passed this book up. The cover, the title, the twenties tag, I was thinking organized crime and speakeasies. That didn't really entice me. But for some reason I did choose it. And I loved it! Give this book a try. You will love it too. It is a stand-alone but I see that there are more books with Sean and Trixie. I look forward to more of their adventures.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Richard M. Nixon, on the counsel of Dwight D. Eisenhower, has decided not to challenge the results of the 1960 Presidential election---the closest in American history---despite the urgings of the Republican Party leadership, when an unthinkable event puts the situation in a different perspective. With new evidence emerging daily that Democratic operatives in key battleground states have rigged the election, in which Democratic candidate John F. Kennedy was awarded 0.16%---100,000---more votes of the 68,000,000 cast, Nixon is under increasing Republican pressure to reconsider his decision not to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court for relief. Eisenhower, too, weary of eight years of eyeball-to-eyeball confrontation with the Soviets, is now under pressure from GOP leaders to reconsider his opposition to a Supreme Court challenge. An opposition based in large part on his desire to hand over the reins of government---and the nuclear codes---in a solemn, dignified, Constitutionally-prescribed manner. Will Chief Justice Earl Warren---an avowed Nixon enemy from their days in California’s rough-and- tumble post-war politics and not all that friendly with the President who appointed him---even agree to hear an appeal? How will his Supreme Court brethren react? Is the evidence as overwhelming as the outraged Republicans believe? Or is it business as usual in the hardball world of national politics? And if a case can be made: does the U.S. Constitution provide for the appeal of a Presidential election? While the Democrats, who believe the results are certified and untouchable, plan their new Administration, Ike has a constant worry: how will Nikita Khrushchev and the Soviet leadership, who already believe they are entitled to a free shot as a result of the U-2 fiasco, react to an American constitutional crisis that may look from Moscow remarkably like a Republican coup d’état? As a massive freak blizzard buries Washington in early-winter snow, the calendar keeps turns: January 6 is the Constitutionally-mandated Electoral College vote. Will the Supreme Court hear the challenge before the College meets? If so, will the Court find the GOP evidence convincing? What will---or can---the Court constitutionally order? And who will mount the Capitol Building platform on January 20th to be inaugurated by Chief Justice Warren? The nation…and the world…wonders.

Zoltan James Devine's "The Nixon Challenge" is a spellbinding tale of alternative history, played out on the grand stages of the White House, Congress, and the Supreme Court. The writer is obviously well marinated in history, and the dialog has the wonderful sound and diction of the principals (for those of us who remember). The timing and relevance of this story could not be better. At the center, are the party politics of the '60s (not that different from today) and the workings of the Supreme Court justices, which today more then ever, affects everyday life. The writing is polished, and the writer narrates the story with a steady flow and compelling ideas.Recommend it highly.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This is my favorite period of American history because it shows -- at ... By Jack Maybrick This is my favorite period of American history because it shows -- at the height of the Cold War and at the beginning of social upheaval and in the early stages of the TV era -- how Americans could be fooled into believing (and into continuing to believe) that charisma and charm magnified by the (black and white!) screen amounted to the equivalent of competence and integrity. This is an alternate history novel in which following the fraud-influenced 1960 presidential election, the plane of President-elect Kennedy goes down at sea and he is declared dead. As a result, Vice-President-elect Lyndon Johnson is going to be sworn into office, and Nixon reconsiders his decision not to contest the results of the election. The role that fraud played in the results of that election has been remarked upon but has never been adequately investigated or given proper fictional treatment and this is the first attempt at the latter, as far as I know. But the premise is weak. The actions of Nixon and others are based on one overriding mindset -- 34 million people cast votes for Nixon as president and NO ONE voted for LBJ as president. But, I mean, everyone knows that the Vice President is a heartbeat away from the Oval Office; that's why presidential candidates carefully choose their running mates. So again, it's a weak premise to suppose that Johnson's impending assumption of the Presidency would influence the decisions of the other characters. The author's constitutional analyses regarding the Electoral College and presidential succession are excellent and he successfully captures the flavor of this period of history to some extent. Imagine a period in American History where Hubert Humphrey is considered a radical liberal, as far to the left as an elected official can go -- though I guess that the Republic had already weathered the threat of Henry Wallace once upon a time.Spoiler alert...At the epilogue, the author gives his own summary of how real history unfolded after Kennedy was inaugurated as President. He castigates Nixon's role in Watergate. But in his alternate history timeline, Nixon emerges as a warmer and slightly more well-rounded figure. The suggestion is that President Nixon in 1960 will make a better president than Kennedy or Johnson would have, which I definitely think is true, and that he will make a better president than he actually made in 1968. Since 1960 President Nixon would have been unburdened by the ghost of the stolen election and by the antagonisms of the "1960's", I think this is definitely true as well. Finally, I've read a number of fictional histories which involve some Democratic politicians making the heroic decision to place their country above their party. This is one of them. Is a Democrat placing country over party even remotely conceivable in real life? At ANY time in history?

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fiction that reads like reality ! By Richard Conti I taught American History for 42 years and in order to make things interesting and too get the students to think outside the box, we played a game called "What If". Things like "What if the attack on Pearl Harbor was a failure? What if the Atomic Bombs were duds and we had to invade the Japanese mainland? This book is a fictional account of a " What If" situation involving the Kennedy/Nixon election. This book is so well written that I would forget that I was reading fiction and get completely caught up in the story. The author's clever use of the "real life" politicians of the time and this greatly enhances the story line. The book is slightly slanted in a favorable Pro-Republican direction, but this does not deter from the realism of the book. I recommend this book without reservation and I, personally favor the Democratic direction, that's how good the book is!

India. The peak of British Imperial power. Something is stirring in the heart of the empire. As Her Imperial Majesty’s Viceroy in India decides to travel to Peshawar to meet the boy Maharajah of Mysore, it becomes clear that he has arrived in a city troubled by religious unrest. Captain James Ogilvie of the 114th Queen’s Own Royal Strathspeys finds himself in the middle of it all. Disguising himself as a native, he must navigate the treacherous streets of Peshawar to find the one responsible for stirring up trouble between the Mohammedan and Hindu – the Mullah from Kashmir. And religious differences aren’t Ogilvie’s only concerns – Tsar Nicholas of Russia is massing his troops on the Afghan border. Time is ticking for Britain. As a last resort to restore peace to the Raj, the Viceroy must travel with the boy Maharajah to Srinagar to confer with the most influential men of the country. But with the meeting taking place during an important Hindu festival, its failure is not an option for Britain. Will Captain Ogilvie be able to bring the viceregal train safely into Kashmir, stop the Mullah and help prevent the collapse of the Raj? ‘A Dangerous Game’ is a gripping historical thriller, another successful novel from McCutchan’s classic Ogilvie series. It was originally published as ‘The Mullah from Kashmir’ under the pseudonym Duncan MacNeil. Praise for Philip McCutchan: "His character conflicts are well organised." — Daily Telegraph "A most exciting successor to his first novel — and it is just as rugged." — The Times, Hamilton, New Zealand Philip McCutchan (1920-1996) grew up in the naval atmosphere of Portsmouth Dockyard and developed a lifetime's interest in the sea. A Kiplingesque view without the overt racism By Vince Adornato While recognizing the racism inherent in the British Raj, this is still an interesting and enjoyable book. If you can divorce yourself from the reality of the politics, this story is a fun and fast paced read. If you enjoy the lore of British India, if you liked "Gunga Din", then this series is for you.

This time rebellion is in the air and Ogilvie is right in the middle of, but there is a joker at play also. The Russians are planning on making a grab for India when the Raj is brought down. There is very little in the way of appearance by the Russians only the threat of their attack, which doesn't happen. Big let down there. It would have been interesting to see Ogilvie match wits with a Russian agent of some kind. These stories are good adventure with a dash of the life of soldiers thrown in and it does make you wonder about the whole idea of empire whether it was good or bad. Just try it see what I mean.

By Amazon Customer McCutchan expertly captures the British Empire or Raj at a point in history not often covered by many. His hero James Ogilvie and his mythical regiment the Royal Strathspeys are portrayed believably and realistically. Each book takes us on a journey back thro time to a place filled with mystery, awe, dread, and heroic actions. Would the McCutchan were still alive so that there could be many more James Ogilvie novels still to come, and not a finite collection which I am fast nearing the end of. (And this is after re-reading them thanx to my Kindle!)iIf you are a fan of Victorian military fiction than you can't go wrong with this series!

By DaughteroftheKing I have been working with this ministry for 4 years and quite honestly, these are awesome Bible studies. Over the last couple weeks I've been working on this one (to translate it) and I am so excited to get this and dig deeper into God's word. We are now at the end of the study and let me tell you, this was an amazing study. If you would like to study with ladies from your church or friends definitely do this study because it is amazing.

Great all in one resource for an in depth Bible Study By Peterson5 This is exactly the study guide I expected, including the reminders Monday, Wednesday, and Friday about the blog posts associated with the study! Even without the blog posts, this study guide explains the SOAP devotional method and gives everything you need to go through the study by yourself or in a small group. I am greatly enjoying this and will probably buy the next guide as well.

63 AD, Rome: The peace policy of Emperor Nero leads to a senatorial unrest in the Eternal City because there is no loot or other wartime profit in sight. Additionally the people lead a frugal life and hoard up their money. Some of the malcontented senators make common cause with plebeian families hunting for a social rise. The result is a CONSPIRACY and even the young Tiberius Caesianus is implicated by the plans of his family. He is ordered to reorganize some property beyond the city boundary and make contact to the wealthy Octavius Quintus. But the merchant is suddenly murdered and Tiberius by Quintus' last will charged to crack the crime. Together with the beautiful German slave Diana and the female Greek philosopher Daphne, he's going on to solve the puzzle. Quickly he has to realize, this murder is in combination with the conspiracy. His family is deeply involved in creating a new order within the empire and the palace is hardly determined to avert this order... About the author: Peter Lichtenberger was born in 1970 in Muehlviertel region, and he is an Upper Austrian to the core. After his business management training, he finished his degrees in informatics and he was taken on as a project manager for the time being. I have loved to read books of adventure stories and crime novels By Theresa Since my teenage, I have loved to read books of adventure stories and crime novels. After reading Peter Lichtenberger's historical novel, I must admit that I read an equally interesting book a long time ago. The story is very interesting and fascinating from the first page to the last. Furthermore, I gained a lot of information about the Roman Empire, because of the author's well-founded knowledge. I really like Mr. Lichtenberger's casual style of writing. The whole story is sprinkled through with humor, and it made me laugh more than once. The very likable protagonist, Tiberius Caesianus, slips from crisis to crisis, before he smashes a plot in the end. I truly enjoyed accompanying this young man, while he mastered one challenge after another. I am looking forward to reading more about that young Roman who gets involuntarily entangled in the political affairs of his homeland. The bottom line is that I can only recommend that book. It truly is a good read!

Is Organic Worth the Price?

$8 for organic milk. Sure, you could spend half as much, but it’s worth it to know that you’re supporting a small family farm where the cows can munch on green grass all day. Plus, you’re not drinking nasty hormones and chemicals, and you’re doing your part to save the environment. Seems like you’re winning all around…but what would you do if that picture of the happy farm, the personal health, and the clean air and water turned out not to be so pretty? What if “organic” isn't all it's hyped up to be?

The Questions That Will Change Everything

What if organic produce only had marginally less pesticide residues than conventional produce? What if the organic, grass-fed beef cows ended up on the very same feedlots as factory-farmed, grain-fed beef cows? What if large swaths of the country were being taken over by huge corporate-owned farming operations—organic farming operations—that were destroying the landscape and depleting the soil? Organic is much more complicated than we’ve been led to believe. From the scale to the possible health implications of pesticides to the treatment of animals, it’s not a black and white issue.

The Sobering Truth Behind the Organic Buzz

Natural Deception takes a sobering look at one of the fastest growing industries in the world today. We find that “organic” may be one more buzz phrase used to sell products rather than a movement really concerned for the wellbeing of our planet and its inhabitants. In the spirit of an undercover news reporter, author Joey Lott takes us through the organic food industry point by point, examining our assumptions and revealing the truth. Find out what major corporation owns your favorite “small” organic brand. Examine whether pesticides may be a health detriment or even partially beneficial. Discover the real environmental impact of conventional farms versus organic farms. The truth is downright shocking. Available on Kindle and Paperback.

Natural Deception: A Sobering Look at the Truth Behind the Organic Food Industry, by Joey Lott

About the Author

"The secret to happiness is to let go of everything - see through every assumption."

Beginning at a young age Joey Lott experienced intensifying anxiety. For several decades he lived with restrictive eating disorders, obsessions, compulsions, and an inescapable fear. By the time he was 30 years old he was physically sick, emotionally volatile, and mentally obsessed with keeping any and all unwanted thoughts and experiences at bay.

At this time Lott was living on a futon mattress in a tiny cabin in the woods. He was so sick that he could barely move. He was deeply depressed and hopeless. All this despite doing all the "right" things such as years of meditation, yoga, various "perfect" diets, clean air, and pure water.

Just when things were at their most dire, a crack appeared in the conceptual world that had formerly been mistaken for reality. By peering into this crack and underneath all the assumptions that had been unquestioned up to that moment, Lott began a great undoing. The revelation of this undoing is that reality is utterly simple, ever-present, seamless, and indivisible.

Lott's books provide a glimpse into the seamless, simple, and joyous nature of reality, offering a glimpse through the crack in conceptual worlds. Whether writing about the ultimate non-dual nature of reality, eating disorders, stress, disease, or any other subject, he offers the invitation to look at things differently, leaving behind the old, out-grown, painful limitations we have used to bind ourselves in suffering. And then, he welcomes you home to the effortless simplicity of yourself as you are.

Not sure where to begin? Pick up a copy of Lott's most popular book, You're Trying Too Hard, which strips away all the concepts that keep us searching for a greater, more spiritual, more peaceful life or self.

I am a born and raised believer in organic growing practices but for those who don't have the means to buy organic, it is great to think the difference may be minimal. I still think organic is best but let's hope Joey Lott is right about conventional products. There is still much work to be done to improve the lives of livestock though.

By Andrew J McMillen If you feel guilty about not eating organic food YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK.The bottom line is if you want to support local farms do it but DON'T buy something in the store labeled "organic" without reading this book. My impression was maybe pesticides etc are a necessary evil and work on being healthy in other ways and just deal with it. Maybe that's not the best thing to say a book review but that was my reaction. I'm going to cut down on certain things, that's for sure, save some money and leave it at that and not worry all the time over everything and pay out the you know what for organic stuff that might be NO DIFFERENT than the regular. Read it :)

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A book that all health-conscious people should read By Retro Grade Even though I’ve been interested in nutrition and health for about 10 years now, this book still had lots of valuable information that I’ve never come across before. To summarise: organic food production has sadly succumbed to the profit-above-all mentality and the only safe bet is to buy from small-scale local farmers that one knows well. The only question that was left unanswered for me is this: Isn’t it also important that less pesticide use in organic agriculture leads to less pesticides reaching our water supplies? In other words, I would think that not only what remains on the plant can be potentially problematic, but also what comes into our food supply via other channels. If I remember correctly, in my country values of certain pesticides in water supply were measured high, often even above the officially allowed limit. Seen from this angle, organic agriculture, while far from perfect, might still be of some benefit to the ecosystems.
