The author really took human nature into play when crafting this. This novella flew right along and was hard to put down (I finished it in a night) the twists and turns kept you guessing and told a wonderful story that most volumes don't cover.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Read - Highly Recommended! By Brent Domann I imagine that writing material suitable for young adults on up is among the most difficult. One has to find exactly the right balance in language between several extremes - characters a reader can identify with and a strong plot without too much deviation, but the right kind of material to express more complex human experiences like irreversible loss, hope in seeming impossibility, and the struggle to thrive in acceptance rather than to wither in resignation. Nagele does this with apparent ease. The book is a joy to read. On top of that, I think that many will find it to offer something subtle but very valuable. A lot of books that young adults typically read in school have messages that, when whittled down, are frankly little more than depressing warnings. But this one is different - the reader is instead offered a look at what benefits might be found by handling fate in a more positive way. It's very enlightening. This book does use names and places that are reminiscent of the life and times of Hans Christian Andersen. However, it is not a biography. Instead, it taps into a bit of the magic from Andersen's fairy tales and uses his contemporary "real" world as a setting for Nagele's own characters. It's really well done, and has just enough of a connection to Andersen's world to have encouraged me to go out and learn about him, too. That's another plus about this book - it piqued my curiosity and I ended up reading and exploring more than just what its pages contain.I would recommend this book without hesitation. It's something that a young adult can tackle, but offers something that people of any age can appreciate and benefit from. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Wolters 5*****StarsBook: A Housefly in AutumnAuthor: Scott NageleGenre: YA/Historical FictionLength: Approximately 198 PagesA HOUSEFLY IN AUTUMN by SCOTT NAGELE is listed as a YA, but this book is for the young, the old and everyone in between. The setting is 19th century Europe and starts out with a gifted young writer with endless possibilities for the future. In one brief heroic moment, his dreams are shattered and the future no longer holds the endless possibilities he was once afforded. The message in this book is so important, everyone should be able to relate to it.I must admit that I read a lot of books. I enjoy many different genres, styles of writing and author’s imaginations. I’m lucky because when I read a book, no matter when or where it takes place, the author’s words transport me into their world. Sometimes this is a good thing. Sometimes it’s not so good. In A HOUSEFLY IN AUTUMN, the character of Anders Christiansen reached out of the pages, grabbed me by the throat and made me fall in love with him, care about him and feel his humble pain. When I first picked this book up, I didn’t stop reading until I was 22% into the book. I only stopped there, because my vision is bad and my eyes couldn’t see the words on the page any longer. My first update on Goodreads was, “What a beautifully sad start.” Mr. Nagele made me feel the glory in achievement, as well as the pain and grief of losing something so very important to the main character, Anders. Mr. Nagele’s writing throughout the book was flawless and took me back to that simpler time in history and helped me become a part of the time and life of the main character. You’re going to need two things readily available when you get to the end of this book; a box of tissues and a quiet place to read where people won’t look at you weird because you are crying so hard and making faces trying to keep your eyes clear enough to read. When you get to that point in the book, it will not cross your mind to put the book down long enough to wipe your face, blow your nose and dry your tears. You just won’t want to take the time away from the book to do any of that.A HOUSEFLY IN AUTUMN by SCOTT NAGELE made it deep into the selection process of the 2012 ABNA (Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award) process and rightly so. This book is an amazing read.Like most readers, I have my favorites in genres, those books that are my go-to books that I read and re-read many times. I also gift those books to friends and family members. In that vein, I’d like to say that A HOUSEFLY IN AUTUMN is a book that everyone would enjoy. To go farther, I think that if you only purchased one book this year, this should be the one.A HOUSEFLY IN AUTUMN by SCOTT NAGELE is a book I won’t soon forget and one that I can promise you, I will be reading again. This book surpassed any expectations I had when I opened the first page and quickly soared to my favorite Historical Fiction novel I’ve ever read. The writing was impeccable and I fell head over heels in love with the characters. As a reader, I’m thrilled this gem of a book crossed my Kindle. This book reached out and touched my heart and more importantly, made me feel.

Silk, Author/Reviewer This is a story suitable for young adults, one which all should read, as well as adults. It is set in 19th Century Europe and the author's writing is styled to that time frame. Anders Christiansen is four years old when his father, a fisherman, returns from the sea on a day in 1816. He loves his father who thrills him with stories which he loves to hear. He soon begins sharing his own tales delighting other classmates and teachers as he grows older. When he is 14 years old, his creative stories become more about people rather than animals and objects. He starts to observe more people and listening to them as they gather in markets and business places. Soon he is chosen to attend a university away from home. The professors at the university recognize his valued gift as high quality and seek to promote and guide him to be very successful. After a year at school, a message is hand-delivered to him which states his father has been lost at sea and his mother is gravely ill. He's to return home immediately. Soon his mother dies, and as he returns to college, it's difficult for him to find a rooming house. Very soon, his life changes dramatically, but he has one faithful friend who wishes to help him: a large white dog. This is a remarkable tale of survival, compassion, and the struggles in making the most of one's life. This story is written mostly as from a story teller, with little dialog, but it's a remarkable tale for young readers if they are encouraged to take the time to engulf themselves into this meaningful story. Highly recommend.

In the spring of 1836, Howard Egan, tired of working as a sailor, chooses to start a new life in Salem, Massachusetts. Howard takes a job in a rope factory and starts to become a prosperous businessman. He also intends to marry a good woman. When he meets Tamson Parshley for the first time, Howard believes he has found that good woman. He just didn't expect her to be so beautiful—or so harsh. Howard soon finds himself entangled in a life or death struggle involving a Mormon missionary named Erastus Snow and a powerful anti-Mormon businessman named Edward Clark, a man powerful enough to summon an anti-Mormon mob at the snap of his fingers. Assigned as Erastus's bodyguard, Howard is duty bound to be at the minister’s side as he preaches his new religion, a religion and faith that complicates Howard’s duty and his business dealings. But Howard and Tamson vow to not let the Mormon Church or Erastus come between them and any hope of love. Howard soon finds himself struggling to fulfill his duty to Erastus, win Tamson’s love, find an answer to his faith—and stay alive as anti-Mormon fervor threatens Salem’s peace.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Very Interesting By Lisa After a stint at sea, Howard Egan finds himself in Salem, Massachusetts. While there he runs into an intriguing young lady and decides his time might be better spent in Salem. Taking a position making ropes, he soon sets forth a great future for himself. Things change though when some Mormon missionaries come to town. Howard becomes the bodyguard for the Mormons, but this puts him in a difficult position. Everything he has carefully planned may be destroyed for some men he hardly knows. Will it all be worth it?I love historical fiction, so I was excited to read this book. There was a great story mixed with some real historical things. That made for a really fun story. I did feel a little thrown into things at the beginning though. I feel like the introductions could have been a bit smoother. Once you get to know everyone though and their backgrounds, things fall into place. I thought Howard had a very compelling story. He wanted to make a better life for himself, and he worked very hard to get there. He also was a man of great conscience. He did was he was supposed to, and he did it to the best of his ability.Of course in all this there was a love story as well. Howard is immediately taken with a girl, but he has to work to get her for sure. Her name is Tamson, and she's a girl with a sharp tongue and a very clear idea of what she wants. Howard will work just as hard to earn the girl of his dreams as he will for the life of his dreams. Things get a bit complicated with Tamson becomes a believer in the Mormons that Howard has been a bodyguard for. Overall this was a fun story with a lot of good historical context. It was a very good read.Book provided for review.

Well written By Veronica Marzini It's a historical novel interesting, engaging, really well written with great attention to detail: the author must have done extensive research.Howard has lived almost always on a ship. After meeting an awesome girl understands that the time has come to establish on the mainland. He finds a family that really generous hosts him in Salem, Massachusetts and provides employment. Howard is really good at his new job. He also will fight hard to win the girl of his dreams. The characters are well developed and very realistic. I adore Tamson: is stubborn, tenacious, really knows what she wants. It 's also interesting to see the first steps and the first difficulties of the Mormon religion.I recommend it to anyone who loves historical novels

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Story of Love and Faith By strategos I just finished reading this story and could not have enjoyed it more. I feel like I came to know the characters and could truly empathize with their struggles. The author has done a great job of bringing 19th-century Salem to life and has clearly done quite a lot of research in support of his story. Howard and Tamson's romance is the highlight of the novel, which is set in a time of misunderstood faith and persecution. Zion's Call is a tribute to the many brave men and women who heard the call of their God and suffered because of their beliefs.

The story of The Lion and the Rose and the Norman Conquest continues in this spellbinding new historical fiction series from author Hilary Rhodes, pulling back the curtain on the lives of two remarkable women connected across centuries: Aislinn, a seventeen-year-old English girl caught up in the advancing army of the “outlander king,” the man who will become known to history as William the Conqueror. Thrust into the center of the new Norman court and a dizzying web of political intrigue and plotting princes, she must choose her alliances carefully in a game of thrones where the stakes are unimaginably high. Embroiled in rebellions and betrayals, Aislinn learns the price of loyalty, struggles to find her home, and save those she loves – and, perhaps, her own soul as well. Almost nine hundred years later in 1987, Selma Murray, an American graduate student at Oxford University, is researching the mysterious “Aethelinga” manuscript, as Aislinn’s chronicle has come to be known. Trying to work out the riddles of someone else’s past is a way for Selma to dodge her own troubling ghosts – yet the two are becoming inextricably intertwined. She must face her own demons, answer Aislinn’s questions, and find forgiveness – for herself and others – in this epically scaled but intimately examined, extensively researched look at the creation of history, the universality of humanity, and the many faces it has worn no matter the century: loss, grief, guilt, redemption, and love.

Writing was good but the story was a bit of a stretch. Would a commoner really have gotten that close to the throne?? I just can't believe it realistic that the Saxon heir would propose marriage to a peasant. It also irked me that Edgar's sister is given a 20th century feminist point of view regarding sex and marriage.

The two Lion and the Rose books, which serve as a prequel to this series, are an excellently researched character study of William the Conqueror, with a strong grounding in historical events. Of course, I was dying to see what happened next, so I picked up this series with great anticipation. Unfortunately, these two books bear only a passing resemblance to their predecessors. As others have noted, the author felt compelled to gild the historical tale with a modern-day framing device, concerning the misadventures of an Oxford grad student. It's not completely awful, but it's a paint-by-numbers exercise in coming to terms with a difficult past, and it suffers greatly by comparison to the far more interesting main story. The momentum just dies whenever the perspective switches to hers. We're meant to draw parallels between the experiences of the historical and modern narrators, of course, but the payoff is nowhere near enough to justify the time wasted on the digression. The meat of the story is certainly better, but also fails to live up to the promise of the first two books. Instead of following the historical characters who inspired us to show up in the first place, we're tagging along with a fictional narrator who keeps Forrest Gumping her way into their paths. In order to make us privy to the history happening all around her, she needs to pass freely among a lot of powerful rival political factions and sustain a truly astonishing number of improbable coincidences and chance encounters. (The story even hangs a lampshade on it toward the end by remarking on her facility for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but that's too little, far too late.) Her actions are clearly driven by plot contrivance (the author needs her to be in the room for a certain conversation, or else we'd have no way of knowing about it) rather than intrinsic motivation; of necessity, she's inconsistent, mercurial, and a terrible decision-maker for someone presented to us as uncommonly levelheaded and intelligent. In general, she's annoying and frustrating, which is unfortunate given that we spend most of the story in her head. The prose is sharp, especially the dialogue (which is often laugh-out-loud funny), and the actual historical events covered still provide enough of a framework for a decent yarn. It still doesn't hold a candle to the gripping first two books, though. Mixing in fictional characters isn't necessarily the kiss of death for historical fiction, but I'm afraid the fake people here are dead weight. The historical figures are far more interesting.

Seems Well Done By Scarlet I only read the preview, which I found well-written and, in the main, historically accurate (save for naming one of Aislinn's brothers James - wasn't a common Saxon or Norse name at the time). I was quite gripped by the storyline so far. Pleasantly surprised to find no missing pages and 4 full, from the beginning, chronological chapters in the preview. If this were a library book I'd definitely check it out, but it only comes in e-book format. If it were just a Norman Conquest tale, I'd buy based on the sample. However, there seems to be this recent trend in historical novels to make them more "interesting" (the history is interesting enough!) either by sliding in time-travel or making half the book set in the future, and there's no sample for that part to see if it's worthwhile, or an annoyance. It's usually the latter and very distracting to keep switching gears in time.

Now so long ago, horses were the muscle that pulled the fire apparatus to a fire scene. From an old newspaper clipping headline telling of the traits of one smart horse named Babe, this is the delightfully historical story of an entire 19th century family of firehouse horses. The Fire Horses of Centre North is played out against the backdrop of a small part of 19th century Chicago.

In the preface of Firehorses of Centre North, he promises a simple story about Babe, a Chicago fire horse at the turn of the 20th century. Babe was a magnificent animal, free spirited and intelligent and she lived an interesting, even humorous life.He then goes on to give the reader an in depth, historical narration of a time in the fire service not likely known by current generations. Mike Adams is a good storyteller and it is obvious that he has researched his topic thoroughly.

There’s something… peculiar about the old abandoned Collins house. The residents of Suspense Street are talking about it, and Will and Fox have seen enough to know the stories aren’t the result of the townspeople’s overactive imaginations. Seventy-nine years ago, the Collinses abruptly packed their things and left during the night. Since that time, a piano and the sound of crying is sometimes heard coming from the darkened house. No one ever lives there for long, and rumor has it that the house is haunted. Will is intrigued, and determined to find a reasonable explanation. In the meantime, Gemma is preparing to meet Will’s parents, which has her more than a little nervous. Her friends Rachel and Grace are coming for a visit also, anxious to have a look at Gemma’s new life and her new boyfriend for themselves. Gemma’s grandmothers have cooking lessons to conduct, Fox has Will and Gemma to watch out for, a kitten to raise, and a boy in need of the kind of help only a super-smart dog can provide. If only Fox could be in three places at once! Even a dog of ancient and noble breed can’t do that, but there’s so much else that he can. Will, Gemma, and Fox must work together to uncover the truth if they are to solve the mystery surrounding the Collins house, right an old wrong, and bring peace to a troubled past.

Most of the writing revolved around the two main characters gushing over each other. I found myself skimming rather than "reading" thinking it would get better. Some may enjoy this type of writing, I do not and will more than likely not purchase additional books written by this author. This is same for volume 1.

June 1940. Italy declares itself Germany's ally and the war in the Western Desert begins. R.A.F pilot Geoffrey Denton and his squadron are tasked with keeping enemy forces at bay in North Africa, Greece and Crete. At first it seems that victory is within their reach, but German soldiers soon outnumber them and the fighting reaches heightened levels of danger. Having survived several dog fights, the strain of constant operations against strong fighter and anti-aircraft defences takes its toll on Denton, who seeks release in the arms of his bright, beautiful Greek mistress, Kathia Pefkos. But is he right to allow her insider access to his squadron? Or is he risking his own life, and those of his men, for a love that was doomed from the start? 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Decent Read By John B. Bowers This was a decent read. I picked it because, as a WWII buff, I haven't read much about the early campaigns by Britain in North Africa and the Mediterranean. This novel covered that period and offered insight into the fighting that took place, the aircraft used, and quite a bit more. I enjoyed the "thoroughly British" lingo and slang of the period. For my taste, the story was a bit uneven at times and the battles were described with what I would call "typical British understatement", but for all that the story kept me interested. The ending took me completely by surprise. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about the period and those who held off the Axis threat.

It was informative about a part of WWII, that was not emphasized in the past. The characters were relatable and developed. I would recommend for those buffs of WWII Flying,

The best thing about the book is that even though I have never read any of the other books in the series, I wasn't lost at all with the characters. Obviously some of them had a backstory that was briefly mentioned throughout the book, but the focus of the book was on Emmie. When I first got the book, I was a little surprised at how short it was and I started to think that it was more of a novella, instead of a novel. I suspect that if all six books were somehow compiled into one book, it would be a more complete work. The characters and idea of the book are great. The writing is descriptive and everything you want to read in a novel. Right away I cared about Emmie and was hoping for the best for her. However, the execution of the plot left a little to be desired. The back cover describes Isaac and Emmie developing a relationship, so much so that she wonders whether he could accept her baby as his own. Unfortunately, Emmie's pregnancy isn't revealed until the very end of the book, and Isaac and Emmie's relationship hasn't progressed much beyond friendship at that point.I wish the book could have been another hundred pages. It would have been nice to read more about Emmie and Isaac and what happens with them. I'm sure I can learn more in books 5 and 6, but I think it might be better to get the entire series and read it from start to finish. Perhaps then the brevity won't bother me so much.If you are looking for a light, very quick read (I read this one in between innings of one Little League game), this is a good choice. Just be aware that the back cover description doesn't quite capture the essence of the book.I received a complimentary copy of this book from Book Look Bloggers in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Sadly disappointed By WRB I was sadly disappointed in this book, which seemed to have an intriguing and promising premise, but it just didn’t measure up to my expectations.I would not have needed to read the book. The entire story was told in the synopsis and then it went absolutely nowhere. It was lacking depth in both the storyline and the characters. On a positive note – I appreciated the beautiful descriptive writing by an author I’ve truly enjoyed in the past. This was part 4 of the 6 installments to The Journey of the Heart series. Perhaps if I had read the first 3 books it might have made a difference to me, but unfortunately this story alone never touched me. My rating is 2 stars.I received a complimentary copy of this book from BookLook Bloggers in exchange for an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Heart’s Betrayal is the fourth book in Colleen Coble’s ... By ibjoy1953 A Heart’s Betrayal is the fourth book in Colleen Coble’s A Journey of the Heat Series. This series is a previous series from Ms. Coble, this one is a very short book for each story. In this story, Emmie Croftner finds out that her late husband wasn’t the man she thought he was, the home and everything she had wasn’t hers after all. After relocating, Emmie meets a soldier that just might change her life.As usual, Colleen Coble writes a story with characters are interesting and intriguing, and make the story interesting. The situations in Emmie’s life leave her with a life of tension, so much so that she can’t stay in her town any longer. This change in her life leaves a more and different type of tension, because of her new place and new people in her life. The one thing with these short books is that you have to wait a month to read the next short installment. For me, it is much easier to read the entire story at once. I am keeping all of these books and will read them again one after the other!I received this book from BookLook Bloggers to read and review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 55.

Lizbeth Edwards is blissfully enjoying her return trip from abroad aboard the RMS Gargantuan until she discovers her family is intent on marrying her off to Maximillian Turner, the son of their good friends and a stranger to her. Neither she nor her family realize that Max, as unaware as Lizbeth was to their families’ plot until just moments ago, is on the ship and standing at the railing nearby as she exclaims furiously, “Maximillian Turner, indeed!” Lizbeth proceeds to air her grievances to Max, having no idea to whom she is speaking. He is shocked and alarmed to hear of their families’ intentions and quickly decides the irrepressible Lizbeth is far more excitement than he can manage in a day and wonders what on earth his family can be thinking. Whatever it is, it makes no difference. This is the twentieth century, after all! Wishing to spare himself a dose of her wrath, Max chooses not to enlighten her as to his identity. A chain of events result in Max and Lizbeth disembarking prematurely and rather abruptly from the ship. It may be the twentieth century but it is also 1910, and all that will matter to her family, his, and the society in which they live is that they spent the night alone, even if it is on a lifeboat lost at sea. Max resigns himself to the inevitable. The only way to save Lizbeth from undeserved scorn is to marry her once they are rescued. The two find themselves stranded on a crescent shaped island, alone, or so they at first believe. They come to discover that the occupants of the island which come and go are to be greatly feared, as are the creatures that live there. Max and Lizbeth must rely on each other for survival, and he comes to realize she is nothing like the girl he thought her to be when they met onboard the ship. He finds himself in love with her, and is now anxious rather than reluctant to marry her. If he is to do that, he must find a way of rescue to save them from the island and its inhabitants before its too late.

Love the main characters and the plot is not the typical " strangers stranded on a desert island". The island isn't deserted, and the people there aren't cannibals, but they are just as dangerous! To survive, the characters have to keep from being found, but the only way to escape is through the other people on the island. Therefore the book is suspenseful! It is a great mix of stress and humor and did not leave me exhausted and needing a break. Love how the book ends and the part with the "angel of death" is too funny. Melissa has created a masterpiece once again!!!

I somehow missed the part where it was 1910 and was a few pages in before I figured it must be in the early 1900's based on the characters dialogue and social rules. I thought it was neat how even though I didn't know what year the book should take place in, it was obvious from the writing style that it was early 1900's. Since the rest of Ms. Simonin's books to date that I've read are all in present time I think this shows her versatility in writing style. The story held my attention well and I was able to relax while reading it, secure in the knowledge that things would work out. Maybe some people don't like that predictability, but I read enough horrible news stories that I crave that security when I read for fun. Another great read by my newest favorite author.

She is a super author. Guess we have all heard about someone saying that once they start reading some books that they have a hard time putting the book down. Melissa's books are that way. Her characters become so real and life like, you actually become friends with the characters. I believe you will enjoy reading each page of the book, I know I did. Thank you, Melissa R. L. Simonin for another great book.

This brand-new novel featuring Margery Allingham’s Mr Campion recaptures the Golden Age of British Detective Fiction. The Danish Ambassador has requested Albert Campion’s help on ‘a delicate family matter’. He’s very concerned about his eighteen-year-old daughter, who has formed an attachment to a most unsuitable young man. Recruiting his unemployed actor son, Rupert, to keep an eye on Frank Tate, the young man in question, Mr Campion notes some decidedly odd behaviour on the part of the up-and-coming photographer. Before he can act on the matter, however, both the Ambassador’s daughter and her beau disappear without trace. Then a body is discovered in a lagoon. With appearances from all of Margery Allingham’s regular characters, from Campion’s former manservant Lugg, to his wife Lady Amanda Fitton and others, this witty and elegant mystery is sure to delight Allingham’s many fans. The dialogue is sharp and witty, the observation keen, and the climax is thrilling and eerily atmospheric.

We move from an embassy reception to the back streets of Soho, then out to Suffolk coastline. All the time the atmosphere is created by old coinage, 45rpm records and squat telephones, while brewery dreys are considered out-dated but impressive and people staff a mysterious Ministry of Defence listening post.Oddly I found the past thus shown somewhat claustrophobic. I suppose it's knowing that you can't easily summon help or look up answers, and a newspaper has to be fetched from a vendor to learn the news of the day.Mr Campion, the eponymous amateur detective, appears at the start but afterwards much of the legwork is taken over by his son and that young man's girlfriend. This is believable given the locations and action scenes involved where younger people are required. The Danish Ambassador's daughter has taken up with a somewhat scruffy young London lad, and Campion's son is set to tail this lad and ensure he is above board. Both the Danish girl and her boyfriend vanish in Suffolk. Location detail is good and there are plenty of quirky characters, before and after the finding of a dead body.

Lesley I selected this novel to read from those offered by Severn House Publishing through NetGalley with a slight bit of hesitation because I'm such a fan of the original stories. I need not have worried. Yes, Mike Ripley does add more subtle humor to this story than Ms. Allingham did, but that turned out to be quite good in my overall enjoyment of the book. In this one, set sometime in the 1960's, Albert Campion is supposed to be retired from all the involvements he had with crime, police, and secret government agencies but we still meet Lugg and Amanda with son Rupert and his wife Perdita starting off the investigation of finding out facts about the boyfriend of the Danish Ambassador's daughter. Rupert's week long shadowing of Francis Tate only adds more questions. When a murder victim is found and someone else disappears, everybody heads to the Suffolk coast and the tiny village of Gapton. Luckily Rupert's school chum Torquil Sandyman, of Sandyman's Brewery, lives right on the spot and can provide a convenient location for investigating all the strange happenings in this village.I enjoyed this novel very much because the characters are well drawn and the mysterious happenings are not just interesting, but also complex enough to keep me guessing about who, what and why. I have put the first novel in this series, Margery Allingham's Mr Campion's Farewell: The return of Albert Campion completed by Mike Ripley (Albert Campion Mysteries)), on my Kindle and plan to read it very soon.I received an e-ARC of this novel through NetGalley.

By Ginny Using some of Margery Allingham's characters and imagining a story around them, Mike Ripley has come up with a very good book. It is much better than the previous book where he used notes and a beginning fashioned from something that Youngman Carter (Mrs. Allingham's widower) created. I'm still confused about the fox (although there is one in the story) and the plot is a bit slight but I enjoyed the book. On principle I do not enjoy follow on books "in the style of" or "finishing off a manuscript" but Mr. Ripley has come up with a winner. I look forward to the next book as I believe he has an agreement to write three "Allingham" books...................Good job!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An afternoon's fun read By Amazon Customer I've read a couple of "time travel Richard" books, and I didn't think that much of them. They're a relatively new development, I believe made popular by both "Outlander", and by the discovery of Richard's remains. I've been a Yorkist and Ricardian since the age of 15, (let's just say a long time ago) but I also haven't been fond of the Saint Richard style of historical novel. I doubt that Richard would even recognize himself were he able to read some of them, and I think that they do his memory as much a disservice as the Evil Deformed Richard literature. With some of the "Time Travel Richard" books, Saint Richard can forward to our time, and be YOUR VERY OWN BOYFRIEND. UGH. This novel isn't like that. It's actually original, and hilariously funny in many places. I would recommend it as an enjoyable weekend or beach book. It's also comic relief for Ricardians.

So-so By Andre LePlume Its amazing the number of mediocre books one can read for free on a kindle - before I got my kindle, I had to go to the library to check out books that I lost interest in half-way through. At least as far as I got, the book was kinda cute, kind of interest, very post-Kate and Leopold. I might have stuck it out if I was housebound in winter.

There may yet be hope!" --Conrad Mbewe, Pastor of Kabwata Baptist Church, Chancellor of the African Christian University, Lusaka, Zambia"Greg Scharf has written a marvelously wise book. This book will instruct the beginner and refresh the seasoned pastor." --Daniel M. By adeptly and ably addressing the major bottlenecks that so often divert preachers from their calling, Scharf offers much wisdom and ample encouragement for those who will put into practice the insightful guidance found in Let the Earth Hear His Voice. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A handbook on preaching that is biblically grounded, theologically sound, and proven by experience By George P. Wood Let the Earth Hear His Voice asks two questions of vital interest to preachers: (1) What is preaching? (2) How can we preach more effectively? The book provides answers to both questions that are biblically grounded, theologically sound, and proven by experience.Greg Scharf is a scholar-practitioner. He pastored three congregations in three countries, and now serves as chair of the practical theology department and professor of homiletics at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. He authored or contributed to several books on preaching, including the revision and abridgment of John Stott’s classic book, Between Two Worlds: The Challenge of Preaching Today, which was published as The Challenge of Preaching. In the Introduction, Scharf cites J. I. Packer’s definition of preaching as his point of departure: “Christian preaching is the event of God himself bringing to an audience a Bible-based, Christ-related, life-impacting message of instruction and direction through the words of a spokesperson” (emphasis in original). Elsewhere, he describes preaching this way: “God speaks to people through people.” Chapter 1 provides a biblical and theological rationale for this lofty understanding of preaching. The remainder of the book — Chapters 2 through 10 — identifies eight bottlenecks that “keep God’s voice from being heard” in the sermon and then identifies strategies for overcoming them. The bottlenecks are:1. Unbelief (Chapter 3)2. Unqualified or disqualified preachers (Chapter 4)3. Faulty text selection (Chapter 5)4. Inadequate understanding of the preaching passage (Chapter 6)5. Inadequate contextualization to the preaching situation (Chapter 7)6. Faulty organization (Chapter 8)7. Inadequate or overused illustration (Chapter 9)8. Flawed delivery (Chapter 10)The first two bottlenecks remind us that ineffective preaching does not always occur because of deficiencies in what might be called the mechanics of preaching, e.g., sermon organization and delivery. Sometimes, preaching is ineffective because of the spiritual, theological, and moral deficiencies of the preacher. In other words, sometimes we — because of little faith, no spiritual gift, or moral failure — are the bottlenecks hindering God speaking to others through us. That is a sobering thought, and preachers would be well advised to think it.Still, for those called and empowered to preach, it is imperative that we hone our craft and become the best preachers we can be. Effective preaching cannot be reduced to considerations of text selection, organization, illustration, application, and the like, but it cannot be separated from them either. Scharf provides valuable advice about how to write and deliver sermons that deliver God’s Word to our congregations.I should note, in closing, that Scharf is writing out of the Reformed or Calvinistic tradition. (P&R Publishing is also Reformed.) I recognize that the Calvinist doctrine of salvation is a controversial topic in Pentecostal and charismatic circles, whose doctrine has been shaped by Arminian and Wesleyan understandings of salvation. That said, Let the Earth Hear His Voice is nonetheless a worthwhile read because it articulates a definition of preaching that is the common inheritance of all evangelicals, not just our Reformed friends. No Christian fellowship has a corner on all truth, so it behooves us to read and listen to those outside our own theological tradition. As Scripture says, “Iron sharpens iron” (Proverbs 27:17). This book certainly sharpened me, and I believe it will sharpen you too.

The Book You Wish You Had When You Began Preaching By Erik Warren O'Dell As a student of theology and preaching, I have come across many very gifted teachers who have said of themselves, "If I'd only known what I do now, I probably could have avoided some of the mistakes I made when I first began." Being in seminary, I am training to be able to deliver the Word of God to the people of God in the future and truthfully, I sometimes feel the overwhelming solemnity of how important it is not to obstruct the means of grace that God has given us in His Scriptures and the fear of making some of the mistakes I have heard about from those gifted men give me pause. Often, the question I ask isn't, "How do I do it right?" but "What must I avoid?" This volume by homiletics scholar and pastor, Greg Scharf is the providential answer to the prayer I have made to be given some clues as I prepare to embark on the journey of preaching ministry. What is a bottleneck? The author recalls the work of University of Indiana professor, David Pace in defining a bottleneck as something that prevents students from breaking through to proper understanding. Scharf helpfully adds his mental image of a ketchup bottle with the narrow part of the bottle, which is "purposefully restricted to deliver it to a target such as french fries" but if it is blocked, it can prevent the flow of ketchup to its target. Much is the same with preaching; there are bottlenecks which "restrict the flow of God's word to his people." With keen insight, the majority of the book lays out and diagnoses and provides "treatments" to limit the bottlenecks in one's preaching. There are 8 "bottlenecks":1. Unbelief2. Unqualified or disqualified preacher3. Faulty text selection4. Inadequate understanding of the text5. Inadequate contextualization6. Faulty organization7. Inadequate balance of proposition and illustration8. Flawed deliveryFor the sake of providing a concise review, I will make a few comments about just a few of the chapters that stood out to me. While the entire book, in my estimation, is a gem, I prefer not to require too much reading of my own thoughts so that the reader can hurry up and just order the book. :)1. Unbelief: This seems like a no-brainer, but as Scharf points out, unbelief plays out in different ways. Of course, an unbeliever in God, salvation through the person and work of Jesus Christ alone and his covenantal history of redemption (the Bible) has no business being in the pulpit preaching God's Word, though as liberal mainline denominations have shown, that doesn't necessarily stop the reprobate from mishandling truth to tickle people's ears. Instead, the unbelief that Scharf addresses is the kind that some preachers may exhibit practically, as in putting all of the weight of the power of their sermon on their own gifts and not trusting God to do the sanctifying work. This can, in turn, lead congregants to misplace their faith in the deliverer instead of the Author of the message. This also looks like padding the worship services with other "stuff" which then limits the appropriate amount of time given to the ministry of the preaching of God's Word. In any case, these things are bottlenecks which restricts the flow of the gospel power of the counsel of God's Word to his people. After diagnosing the issue, Scharf offers biblical counsel of how to overcome this particular bottleneck: confession of our unbelief, supplication for God's grace and help and recitation of creedal convictions to remind ourselves what it is we believe, why we believe it and why we must be faithful to our calling as ministers of God's Word. He gives a list of very potent creedal statements which give practical and devotional value to this particular chapter. 3. Faulty text selection: In this chapter, Scharf lists 9 dangers of text selection, one of which is the haste-driven sermon, or the sermon which arises out of giving too little time to prayerful selection of the text and preparation of the sermon due to simply running out of time because of other ministry concerns. If you have not given yourself enough time to dedicate to carefully selecting the text, the same sort of haphazard work will go into the exegesis and preparation of the sermon, leading to the bottleneck of delivering a 30-minute sermon where inadequate treatment of the text is clearly evident, restricting the flow of the power of the text to effect change in God's people. Again, the pastor-scholar offers invaluable practical insights to avoid this particular bottleneck.6. Faulty organization: As someone who has ADHD, I am used to my thoughts being scattershot and needing to be streamlined in order to provide clarity to others. While things may make sense to me, if I am going to preach, I will need to ensure that my work on the text is clear for the entire congregation. This is the main thrust of this chapter and is one that resonated with me the most with its practical insights in the preparation in writing an organized sermon. My personal favorite is his counsel to focus on inductive sermons: starting with the bits of biblical data and organically demonstrate what they add up to--like an unfolding story. As a fan of teachers like Kevin Vanhoozer (Faith Speaking Understanding), I am particularly fond of the idea that like God who gave us an unfolding story of redemptive history in his Word, so too should the preacher to God's people give an unfolding of the story so that they can see afresh the drama of God's work in their lives and the world around them.I am so thankful for this timely book and it was a pleasure to read. It flows easily and benefits from its own helpful organization. Speaking as someone who is greener than the grass after a Spring shower, I confess that I may benefit from this book more than seasoned preachers, but given that this book is also endorsed by one of my professors and gifted preacher (Dennis Johnson), I suspect this book (at least in parts) can be helpful to even more experienced ministers of God's Word.DISCLAIMER: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review, whether positive or negative.

Practical and Helpful for Budding or Seasoned Preachers By Chris Ho Every preacher who has tried to excel in preaching would probably have felt the immense burden and enormous responsibility to preach faithfully and competently. Many a times, you would find yourself just like Paul who cried out to God, “Who is sufficient for these things”. No doubt some of these struggles come because of bottlenecks that occurs during the preparation of sermons.Greg R. Scharf understands the problems face by preachers and wants to help them go through these bottlenecks. Although this is primary a book about resolving these bottlenecks, Scharf does not want to make any assumptions, he starts by making a biblical case for preaching. Having shown that preaching is biblical and necessary, Scharf then tackles 8 of such bottlenecks. This book would especially be helpful for young budding preachers, since they would soon encounter these bottlenecks in the near future. More experience preachers would quickly identify themselves with the various bottlenecks, but they will go away learning some ways to deal with them. This book is definitely practical for preachers and deals with things that preachers often faces. Though tackling these situations Scharf gently encourages preachers to continue to work on their weaknesses rather than to give up on it.Personally I was helped by this book, most of the books on preaching do not really deal with this bottlenecks at such a detailed level and I’m thankful that such a book has finally been published. If you’re looking for a book to help you with the practical issues in preaching, then this is the book for you. Pastors should get this book and review their preaching every year or every two years. I’m sure they will find themselves preaching better and better as the years goes by.Rating: 5 / 5Disclaimer: I was given this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review
