The book is more concerned with the day to day lives of the hero and other marines rather than with providing any real adventure. Hitchcock once said his movies were like real life, minus the boring parts. This book leaves in all the boring parts. The action scenes are few and far between, sparsely written, and generate little excitement. The author has a good ear for dialects but that does the reader little good since most of the talk is about dull subjects. Nice that the hero is a Royal Marine rather than a naval officer but that does not compensate for a narrative that is long winded, unengaging, and devoid of any real thrills.

By AZS A very enjoyable read with plenty of unexpected twists, turns, and historically interesting tidbits all from a somewhat unique perspective: that of a Royal Marine captain. We get to see the protagonist at sea and on land, at war and at peace, in public and private. The author does a fine job of sketching the scene and developing a set of characters that keep the reader excited to turn the page. It reminds of collaboration between Andrew Wareham and (the early) Geoffrey Watson. There are a few annoyingly obvious typos that should have caught by the editor/proof reader. I am very much looking forward to the next installment.

Christian who likes mystery stories By PQSmith I enjoy reading a good mystery/suspense story that is not full of profanity and has what I judge to be appropriate relations between men and women. I have started a lot of books and then stopped reading them once I started noticing the book contained inappropriate sexual content and/or profanity. This is a book I read all the way through, appreciating the suspense and I liked how the author brought the pieces of mystery together to give a satisfactory ending.

She quits the FBI and returns home to Thorny Creek with the idea of finally putting to rest the nightmare of those memories and finding out who he is so she can stop him. She also leaves behind her FBI husband (Sam) who she thinks has a thing for his lady partner. Sam Russell had made a terrible mistake and now he's lost the woman he loves. When Sam gets call from Jordan's cousin (the mayor) with a request to come to Thorny Creek to help investigate the latest victims of a serial killer, known as The Musical Strangler, he jumps at the chance. He's hoping he can help solve the case as well as win back the heart of the woman he can't live without. Jordan hasn't told Sam about her abduction. When he finds out, will he feel differently about her? Can Jordan get past her hurt and forgive Sam for his indiscretion? Above all, will they discover the true identity of the 'The Musical Strangler' before it's too late???A Familiar Evil is one of those stories that once you start reading you just can't stop. It has all the elements I have come to love about Anne Patrick's writing. Great characters, zippy dialog and lots of red herrings all wrapped up in 'edge of your seat' suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed Sam and Jordan. The interaction between these two was electric. I liked all the secondary characters as well, especially Devin. He's only 9 but what a little charmer he is. I loved all the advice he gave Sam. I enjoyed watching Sam and Jordan work through their issues. It was done in a realistic and believable way. The story keeps a steady pace then ramps up to it's nail-biting conclusion. As with all of Anne's stories, she keeps you guessing on who the killer is until the end. I love that! I highly recommend A Familiar Evil but be sure to set aside a block of time...you're going to need it. It's a great story! A thank you goes to the author for providing this complimentary copy for my review.

Jordan's character grabbed me and the monster she is trying to fight. She worked at the FBI and decided to quit and go back to her home town in Thorny Creek. She is now the town sheriff. When some bodies show up she wonders if they are all connected to a past crime. Unbeknownst to Jordan, her husband Sam, shows up in town to help her. It did not go over to well when he showed up. Jordan has a hard time getting over the kiss her husband and his partner Darcy shared. As if she doesn't have enough of her plate Darcy starts calling Sam and even shows up.Jordan knows the monster from her past is now in the present and following her. She senses things are wrong and he might be the cause of a lot of murders. With Sam's help they might just catch the person who has done some terrible things. This fast paced mystery/thriller is a wonderful read. The book kept me guessing till the end. I was surprised at who the person turned out to be that was causing so much sadness and wrecking havoc everywhere. Anne does a wonderful job with the research and descriptions. It makes you feel like you are part of the team and are actually there in Thorny Creek.

The author has successfully woven into this book very interesting scenes that could very well have taken place at the birth of Jesus. To me, as an adult, it was so refreshing to read. I know, to any child, it will be truly exciting as the stories and the illustrations literally jump off the page. Obviously, the author expresses herself so clearly and understandably for children. This story of the birth of Jesus is very different and exciting. I love it !!!

Looking forward to book 4.But ,the author leaves so many open ends with comments like....." not killing him would lead me into serious trouble later" or the like, that I just have trouble keeping abreast of the characters involved. Anyway, this is a small point. Someone could have a read of the story and do some editing/corrections in some parts. But it does not hurt the flow. A new author to me and I have been though the first 3 books in about a week.Hookie

I usually read 2 - 3 books at time, and I always know a good one when it crowds out the others. I read this in one go - could not put it down. The star of the book is really the siege of Acre itself - and as far as I can tell, the author does a very good job of following the historical narrative, while keeping the pacing moving. While there are no major surprises - you know that the city will fall, and that the protagonist will survive -- there are some interesting plot twists that make it interesting.I might have liked to see a little more "I told you so" on the part of the hero -- the decision not to apologize and compensate the Muslim and Jewish victims of the riots that precipitated the siege is an act of almost mind-numbing stupidity, given the precariousness of the Crusader position.I quite enjoyed this book, and will look forward to the next stages in Ronan MacAlistair's career -- though these will apparently not be taking place in Outremer!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Only One Minor Flaw By L. Hudnal ....The use of "We waited on them ..." is a colloquial modern vernacular and is jarring to a reader lost in a story about the early Middle Ages. It should read waited "for" them. This mistake recurs throughout. Apart from this, an absolutely excellent and enjoyable book. I'd wanted to read the stories of the last knights that remained alive being so wounded they were unable to walk tying themselves to chairs to meet the final Muslim onslaught, and REALLY wanted to read a fictional first hand account of the final collapse of the Grandmaster tower (which was supposed to have been very dramatic and caused huge Muslim casualties), but it's hard to complain overall with this story.

However, for at least the kindle version of the second four books, there is a need for some more careful editing. I've noticed at least four/five obvious, simple spelling/gramatical errors. 'Here' instead of 'hear' and such. Already two errors before the end of the first chapter in the eighth book. Not sure if this is for the Kindle version only. It is a bit distracting.

Tom Fulwood, the future Earl of Standish, discovers at the age of 15 that marriage can destroy a man, namely his father. His mother prefers entertaining men in her bedroom, while her husband sits downstairs, unable or unwilling to respond to his wife's inappropriate behavior. From that day on Tom vows that no woman will hurt him the way his mother hurt his father. For the next 17 years, Tom works hard to become one of the most notorious rakes London society has ever seen, successfully keeping all the women of his acquaintance at a distance.

In 1810, 24-year-old Isabelle Crawford had been brought up hearing stories of how much in love her dead parents were, and had expected to find similar happiness when she came out in society. Reality was different to what she had imagined though; instead of love, she found fortune hunters and as a result left London to set up home in Bath. Her two elder brothers had supported her decision, although they would have rather seen their sister married instead of choosing what was seen by the town as an eccentric decision, a young woman living a single life in Bath with a cousin as chaperone.

A potential marriage between Tom and Isabelle's respective brother and sister throws the couple together and sets in motion a chain of events that will see Tom fighting for his life and Isabelle being kidnapped by the very man that Tom had found in his mother's bedchamber all those years ago.

The book was only 99c so I had nothing to lose. I do recognise that there were a few grammar errors and a few other minor errors but they didn't seriously detract from what in essence was a good story. I liked the author's writing style and the book kept me interested despite the up's and down's between the main characters. The H had clearly suffered due to his upbringing and it gave him a fear of marriage and a distrust of women. The h hadn't met anyone she wanted to marry and had settled into an independent life in Bath. All of it was believable and I enjoyed the way the relationship developed between the H and h. This was a clean romance with only kissing and the rest being left up to our imagination. This book was well worth reading especially in view of the price.

Because of the cheap price ($.99), I thought it would turn out to be a very short book or short story. Then I immediately thought it was going to a crummy, poorly written book. Happily, I was pleasantly surprised. This book was interesting and fun. The characters were believable and the story very entertaining. I especially liked the main characters, Tom and Isabelle and Mary and James.. I appreciated the attention to detail and respect for authenticity. I get so annoyed when authors use vernacular or 21st mind sets for period books. There was none of that. Thanks for a well-written and enjoyable book. It will be a book I will love reading again and again.

The characters were interesting and even though flawed I was really desperate for them to get the ending they deserved. I didn't expect the twists that happened and it adds to the enjoyed when I'm reading and guess which way the story is going to go, only to find that it doesn't go that way at all! This is the first novel I have read by this author, but the characters and story were such that I am off to download the rest of her books now. Well worth a read

The Marine's New Family (Love Inspired), by Roz Dunbar

About the Author Roz Dunbar is a romance author who lives on the picturesque Southern Outer Banks of North Carolina. When not writing, she can be found on the beach dipping her toes in the sand and sea.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Luke took the last nail out of his mouth and placed it precisely on the wooden beam. One strong whack of the hammer and the nail was halfway in the wood. Two more lighter thumps and it was all the way in. Job finished. One screened porch added to a beautiful old cottage on Bogue Sound. He felt an incredible sense of satisfaction and inner peace as he looked out at the sea from his vantage point on the roof. As if on cue, several dolphins surfaced, jumping playfully, breaking through the glassy face of the calm water.Luke was pretty certain that there was no more beautiful place in the world than this lovely little town on the North Carolina coast. And since he'd seen a fair bit of the world in his service as a marine, that was saying something. He stood up and stretched, deeply inhaling the tangy salt air laced with the softer scent of honeysuckle. The warm summer breeze caressed his body lightly.Thank You, Lord, for this wonderful day, he prayed silently, and the strength to help others in need. "Hey, Dad, look."Luke snapped out of his reverie when he heard the young boy's voice. Dad. He was still getting used to the title, and to the ten-year-old standing at the foot of the ladder. If only Luke had known he was a father. So much time wasted.Coming to terms with the fact that he had a son had been difficult for him, but he suspected that Caleb was having a more difficult time. First the boy had had to deal with losing his mother to cancer. Only then, as per the conditions of her will, had Luke and Caleb learned about each other. Now Caleb was coming to terms with a new parent and a new home—a new life, all things considered, although he really never talked about the huge turns his young life had taken in the past six months."What is it, son?""It's those ladies.""Luke! Yoo-hoo, Luke!"Luke smiled at the term "those ladies" as he turned his eyes from the tranquil scene in front of him to the hot-pink golf cart bouncing down the dirt lane. Nimbly, he climbed down the ladder, wiping the sweat from his face with a towel he picked up off a table. Casually, he ruffled the hair on Caleb's head as he watched the vehicle approach them. The boy didn't smile, but he didn't pull away as he had a habit of doing when Luke touched him. They were still getting used to each other, and signs of physical affection from a father he had just met were new to him. Luke understood the boy's caution and felt no irritation. He knew his son would come around, with God's help. Luke prayed for it daily."Hello, ladies," he called. "Say hello, Caleb," he instructed the boy."Hi." Caleb inched closer to his father and Luke draped an arm around his thin shoulders, feeling a burst of happiness when the boy let it rest there."Hi there, Caleb!" Both ladies smiled broadly at the youngster."Oh, it looks just fantastic!" Katie Salter declared as she pulled the cart close to the brick terrace adjoining the new screened porch."Just perfect!" Annie Salter concurred as she sprang from the golf cart with the agility of a woman half her age, a wicker hamper in her grasp."What have you got there?" Luke reached a hand to help the elderly lady, but she waved it off, carrying the basket with ease to the table."Brought you and Caleb lunch. You both must be starved what with all of the work you've been doing for us this morning," Katie chirped as she began pulling wrapped sandwiches and containers of what appeared to be various salads from the white basket. Luke's stomach rumbled audibly at the sight. The women laughed, Annie reaching out to slap the source of the rumble lightly."Guess I am pretty hungry. How about you, Caleb?" Luke's face reddened slightly with embarrassment as another loud growl emanated from his midsection. This time Caleb laughed with everyone else.In no time the sisters had the small table on the terrace set with paper plates, napkins, forks and plastic cups. Katie deftly poured frosty sweet tea into four of the cups, while her sister made short work of setting out fresh shrimp salad, coleslaw and several kinds of sandwiches. Luke got Caleb to help him pull four chairs up to the table while the women worked on the food. Honestly, he could not think of a better place for lunch or better company.Once they were all seated Annie reached for his cal-lused hand and the smaller, slightly wrinkled hand of her sister, while Katie reached for Caleb's. The boy hesitated before placing his smaller hand in hers, a questioning look on his freckled face. She winked at him, giving him a reassuring smile."Will you bless the meal, Luke?" she asked in her soft Southern drawl."I would be honored." He nodded. Reaching for his son's other hand, he began."Bless this food to our use, and us to Thy service, and make us ever mindful of the needs of others, Lord." He paused and continued with a twinkle in his eyes. "And thanks for the company of two such beautiful women and my son. I am truly blessed three times over, Lord. Amen."The two elderly women giggled like young girls and Annie squeezed his hand in response."Ah, Luke Barrett, if I were twenty years younger you'd be in trouble!" Annie proclaimed, her sparkling brown eyes taking him in appreciatively. Her sister snorted. "More like forty years younger. And even then you'd be a…what do they call it nowadays?""Cougar. I'd be a cougar, which I don't mind being at all!" Annie declared with a spirited nod, almost dislodging the wide-brimmed straw hat that covered her blue-gray hair.Luke choked on the bite of the ham-and-cheese sandwich he was eating. Katie absentmindedly began pounding on his back, her attention still focused on Annie. Caleb was following the conversation with a great deal of interest, his blue eyes moving from one adult to another as he dug into the food as though he was starving."Annie May Salter!""Oh, like you never thought of it." Annie laughed at her sister's scandalized expression."Well, yes, but good manners dictate that you do not voice such thoughts aloud. And there are young ears present." Katie tried to be prim, but Luke noticed she was close to laughter, as well. He also noticed she was still thumping on his back."I'm fine, Miss Katie," he assured her."Sure?" she asked kindly, giving his back a couple more wallops for good measure.Luke nodded. "Yes, ma'am." Gently, he led the topic in another direction by asking, "When do the new tenants arrive?" Luke knew the cottage was rented out to vacationers each summer season.Miss Katie frowned slightly, her eyes focused on a hummingbird that was flitting gracefully among the flowers of a nearby scarlet hibiscus bush. "Tenant," she corrected. "That poor girl," she added softly. "She should be here sometime today or this evening. She's driving down from Raleigh.""She just needs a little R & R and TLC," Annie asserted firmly. "She'll be right as rain in no time. Isn't that what you marines call it, Luke? R & R?""Yes, ma'am, rest and relaxation," Luke confirmed as he leaned back in his chair, stretching his long legs in front of him. "Although we don't use TLC very often at all," he said with a crooked grin. He couldn't imagine telling his troops they needed tender loving care, no matter what condition they were in."The cottage won't be rented out for quite some time," Annie said. "Tess has been invited to use it as long as she likes. That's why we added the screened porch. Thought it would be a comfy spot to curl up and read on rainy days.""Well, she is family, after all, and Swansboro is the perfect spot for her right now. I reckon she'll be glad to get away for a while." Katie began packing the hamper with the remains of the lunch as she spoke, then stopped when she noticed Caleb eating another sandwich."Extended family, but family is family," Annie amended. "Sister! Perhaps you should ask our guests if they are finished before taking their meal away from them." Annie looked pointedly at the little boy, who was wolfing down his second sandwich with a great deal of relish."Family?" Luke asked, wondering about this mysterious tenant. "Is it someone I know?" He wasn't related to the sisters, but they'd adopted him so thoroughly into their lives and their hearts ever since he'd moved to town that he felt like part of their family. Given his own troubled background, it was a feeling he relished."No, dear, you haven't met her," Katie answered. "Tess is Livie's sister-in-law."Luke nodded in understanding. Livie was the sisters' grandniece—a sweet girl who Luke had known for the past few years, along with her husband, Adam, and her adorable twin daughters, named after the Salter sisters. "This Tess is Adam's sister?" he asked."That's right. We love Livie and Adam, and by extension, we love Tess. Just like we love you, Luke. And now we have Caleb to love." She flashed the boy a warm, grandmotherly smile.Caleb stopped eating, looking at Katie curiously. "How can you love me if you don't really know me?" The question was honest and straightforward, but neither of the sisters was taken aback. Katie's answer was honest and straightforward in return."We chose to love you and we have plenty to go around. No sense in letting it just sit there and go to waste.""Yep." Annie nodded. "Don't fight it, kid. Just go with the flow."God bless both of you, Luke thought. He watched his son closely, gauging his reaction to their words. Caleb seemed to be considering what they had said, then shrugged his shoulders, accepting it without question."Okay. Thank you for choosing to love me." Then he went back to finishing his lunch, the conversation obviously over for him. But not for Katie, who had been watching him carefully."You're quite welcome. Would you like some more shrimp salad, Caleb? I don't think your daddy feeds you enough.""No thank you, ma'am. I'm full now. And my dad feeds me good. I just get really hungry sometimes." He hesitated before adding, "Dad, can I go sit on the dock and watch the dolphins?""Yes, you can. Remember the rules, though. No touching the boat, got it?""Got it," Caleb affirmed as he grabbed the chocolate chip cookies that Annie handed him, then raced across the yard to the long weathered dock that jutted into the sound. "Thanks for lunch!" he yelled back over his shoulder."Ladies, that was the best lunch we've had since you made us lunch last weekend." Looking at Annie, Luke winked, and she blushed to the roots of her shiny blue-gray hair."I declare, Luke Barrett, you are a pure scamp!" she twittered happily.Katie scowled at her twin sister, shaking her head as she tossed the empty paper plates into a plastic bag she had taken out of the hamper."Annie, you are far too old to twitter and simper," she declared. "Besides which, we have places to go, people to see and many things to accomplish in the next few hours. And what's this about the boat?" She turned her attention back to Luke."It appears that he and Joey Mason have been taking a boat and going over to Shackleford Island without permission. Joey's dad caught them yesterday, tying up at the dock in front of his house, and read them the riot act. Seems this wasn't the first time. Caleb and I had a long talk last night."Or at least, they'd spent a long time in the same room with Luke doing a lot of talking. Caleb hadn't had much to say—which was par for the course. Luke just didn't know how to connect with the boy. He felt as if he was still searching for his footing when it came to being a father. Maybe because he'd never really had a father of his own. At least Caleb seemed to have bonded with Joey Mason. Caleb needed someone he could talk to—someone who could make him laugh and relax and enjoy life in North Carolina.Luke just wished that someone could be him."Just being boys. Besides, Joey knows how to handle a boat. He was raised in a fishing village, for goodness' sake."Luke knew that Annie was trying to make light of the incident, but he had been scared out of his mind when Joe had called him. Anything could happen on the water."I respect what you're saying, Miss Annie, but I disagree. Joey may know what he's doing, but he just isn't big enough to handle the boat by himself if something goes wrong, and Caleb doesn't know enough to be able to help. Joey isn't allowed to take the boat out without an adult, and now Caleb knows the ground rules, as well. They're only ten years old.""He's right, sister," Katie agreed. "Now come, we need to get moving."Not for the first time Luke marveled at the energy the sisters exuded. They were all light and motion, rarely slowing down even for an instant. Well into their seventies, they had more vim and vigor than most women thirty years younger. He blessed the day he had met them, after he had attended his first church service in town over four years ago. They had taken to him immediately and had drawn him into the fellowship of the church and the easy pace of life in the quaint fishing village that he had come to love. He felt a sense of family with them, something he had sorely missed, first in his troubled childhood, then later in his vagabond life as a marine. Something he was desperate to give to his newfound son. Each time he had deployed, they welcomed him back with open arms and home-cooked meals. Home. Yes, Swansboro was home now, as close to home as any place he had known, and he was determined that this was where he would raise his boy. And he was more than happy to take on any little task he could to show his appreciation for his home, and the family that had all but adopted him."Miss Katie, do you have that list for me?" he asked as he jumped to his feet to help clear the last of the containers from the table.Katie handed him a sheet of note paper, where she'd jotted things that they had asked him to do before the end of the day.

She also has PTSD and has arrived, to recuperate, in a small town cottage belonging to extended family. One thing she doesn’t realize is that Luke is one of the marines who saved her life, carrying her straight out of bombing wreckage in war-torn Afghanistan. Home from active duty, Luke is conveniently the neighborhood handy-man, and is preparing the house for its latest guest. There is something familiar in Luke, but Tess can’t put her finger on it. Luke is being sensitive and does not feel it’s the right time to tell her how he knows her. He doesn’t wish to cause Tess further pain by remembering the terrible event that day, which took many lives. According to Luke’s belief, this “coincidence” of Tess’s presence and them meeting again all the way from Afghanistan, proves that God directs our path. All the while Luke is fighting for custody of his 10 year old son. There is a woman from church who believes she deserves all of Luke’s attention and is less than thrilled when Tess comes to town. Tess struggles with her own faith, wondering where God was during her trauma and how could He allow that to happen? This story unravels many great subplots and well, of course it’s a lovely romance. This is my first read from author Roz Dunbar. She is a great story-teller. This work stays true to form in being what one would expect from the Love Inspired line, which is a sweet read.On behalf of Timeless Christian Writers, I was provided a free copy for my honest review -- which has been provided.

From the first page, I was pulled in and it wouldn’t let me go. The book was realistic, loving, and fun to read. Luke, one of the characters, was similar to my father, a gruff hard-core marine, with a deep love for his family. I could see the see the landscape, smell the air, and relate to the people in the book. It was a fast read that left me wanting to know what happens next. Will there be a sequel?

I was more than excited when I got an arc of this title because I am a fan of the Lords of Vice series by Alexandra Hawkins and I had/have her in my mind as an author whose books I must read. Unfortunately, A Duke but No Gentleman was a disappointment.I must warn you that this book contains three rape scenes. I wasn't ok with that and I wanted to make sure that you know what kind of book you are getting. And in two out of those three cases we knew the characters. I have read some pretty dark books, but in this case we are talking about someone who is a serial rapist and we are inside his head. It wasn't pretty.I found the whole story poorly written to be honest. I didn't realize when Imogen and her duke fell in lust and then love. It wasn't exactly too fast. It was more about missing the parts where they develop feelings for each other. I felt that the book might as well be happening in 2015 because Imogen was coming and going as she pleased. No chaperones, no secret meetings that felt forbidden and the heroine gave up her virginity too quick and too easy if you ask me. And even though the word originates from the 1300-1400s, I found it weird and out of place when Tristan says that he should get Imogen cleaned up in case of infection.I am not sure if I would recommend this book, though I might suggest that you should give it a chance if you don't mind the rapes. A Duke but No Gentleman wasn't the best way to begin a new series, but you never know how good or bad the next books will be. I will give the series another chance and read the second book when it is released and I hope that it will be better and this time preferably without a bet. I believe that if the book had less focus on the bet and more on romance I would have given a higher rating to the book.

By Gaele Review: 2.5 stars – roundedI was intrigued by the premise of two friends that are vying for a single girl. Isobel is newly arrived for the season, and in a bit of difficulty from her aiding a friend to elope with an unsuitable (read not titled) man. Despite her ‘naivete’, Isobel quickly is enchanted by Tristan, and her mother catches them in a compromising position. Warning off Tristan, she is determined, at that moment, to keep Imogen from the notorious pair of friends.Tristan (The Duke) and Norgrave (the Marquess) have been ‘friends’ for years, actually, they are acquaintances who compete over EVERYTHING, cards, horses, whether the sun will rise …you get the picture. Both are spoilt children with a need to cover their decided insecurities but proving their superiorities. While Hawkins does portray the thoughtlessness in their behavior and personality in keeping with rakes of the day, these two hit every distasteful emotion possible for me: I had difficulty finding redemption or solid traits to admire in either man.Tristan, after the brief interlude with Isobel is intrigued, but Norgrave knew of the encounter with her mother and proposes a wager: the one who claims the fair Isobel’s maidenhead first will win. And, rather than recognizing the over the top nature of the wager, Tristan is all in.Told in rotational POV, the voices are uneven in their clarity and singular purpose: this had the characters of Tristan and Norgrave particularly confused. Isobel is a bit clearer, but the absolute flaunting of all social conventions for a debutante of the time was incredibly problematic for me. How is it that Isobel is able to travel where, when and with whom she chooses, freely without a chaperone? Of course, giving her such freedoms allows for multiple moments to tryst with Tristan, until he wins the bet. And then. The story goes completely south. Norgrave, in a fit of jealousy or pique or just depravity lures Isobel to a meeting, where he rapes her. And, she purportedly enjoys is. Sorry, but Ms. Hawkins jumped far over the line of acceptable here.An attempt to recover from that incident and a few ‘incidents’ due to Norgrave’s bad behavior and the story wraps with a bow. Unconvincingly for me. I can’t say that I would recommend this story, I’m saddened by the lack of believable plot: I could easily believe in and understand, even as I disliked them. Isobel, to me was half-finished and less interesting as a person, she was an element, for a purpose, without clear intention.I received an eArc copy of this title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

I love her writing and she is one of my favorite authors! I love right off the bat how the heroine Imogen Sunter and the hero The Duke of Blackbern met! I like how they started building Imogen with kind of a funny trouble start with the family that showed how she help her friend when normal people of that time wouldn't. I didn't like though how they started the Hero and his friend Marquess of Norgrave. But I was turned when he met the heroine. Also there was a part near the end I didn't like but I did like how the hero handled it. This is a great book that I would recommend .... although I love all of Alexandra Hawkins books! Loved it!!

Penelope’s Song reimagines Homer’s Odyssey in which Penelope, the hero’s wife, is almost silent and invisible. Now, after over 2600 years of ignoring her story, we learn about this strong, courageous, creative, and unforgettable woman from her own point of view and in her own voice. Struggling to survive the cruelty and emptiness of a marriage to an absent hero, Penelope teaches us about kindness and beauty, about dreams and nightmares, about loneliness and fear. In a culture mired in misogyny, she writes the narratives of her enslaved weavers, of her son who almost destroys the House of Odysseus, and of her own life and forbidden love for Cadmus, the Phoenician merchant who taught her to read and write and whose devotion gives her reason to live and hope. In this historical and revisionist novel, Penelope reveals women’s lives in an ancient world renowned for its epic characters and thereby redefines the image of hero in her time. "In Penelope's Song Lois Cuddy takes readers on a journey to another place and time –specifically to islands in the Mediterranean more than three thousand years ago. Even so she manages to depict how much life is the same in terms of human longing and loving as well as in the horrendous violence that men inflict on one another and on women. This inspiring story shows how the wife of the legendary ‘hero’ Odysseus manages not only to survive hideous cruelty, but to create beauty and happiness and to relieve suffering for many by accepting her situation and focusing on doing good rather than avenging her capture or succumbing to hatred. Penelope has a secret which helps her to get through the most difficult times, and that is the ability to write which gives her comfort and hope. The voice and beauty of this amazing character will haunt readers." ~ Rebecca Leo, The Flaws That Bind "In this compelling saga, Lois Cuddy vividly recreates an ancient world—where women are prizes, slaves, and means to an heir--and adeptly constructs the paradox of captive and queen. Cuddy’s Penelope is on par with Antigone in her beliefs and allegiances, but Penelope is gifted and cunning; cunning enough to create a counter feminine world with her skilled slave weavers that exemplifies empowerment and compassion. In this way, she is model female heroine starring in a work that is scholarly and well-researched, but fascinating and readable." ~Laurette Folk, A Portal to Vibrancy Lois Cuddy’s exquisite writing style - poetic, detailed, authentic - is possessed of Penelope’s spirit. The author has immersed herself in this world, and her ambitious research and extraordinary reimagining of this woman’s life transforms the novel into captivating “memoir.” By taking on the life of an important but voiceless woman from antiquity, Cuddy’s novel joins the ranks of others who have conquered the age-old struggle of feminism - by breaking the silence, she allows Penelope to shine in her own right. Penelope is no longer an appendage to a hero’s tale; she has her own story, and she is the powerful heroine. This is an exciting, moving, unique novel. ~ Vicki Addesso, co-author, Still Here Thinking About You

Penelope's odyssey finally told By Gunther Purdue This a a completely original take on the Greek classic––The Odyssey ––because it is told from the perspective of Penelope. It has taken over two thousand years to hear her side of the tale, and it has been well worth the wait. Lois Cuddy has come up with a brilliant scenario and she treats it with great justice through her lyrical prose and unique insight.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this recovery of Penelope from ancient literature By Sarah Holmes I thoroughly enjoyed reading this recovery of Penelope from ancient literature. The novel reveals some strong feminist themes, and it would be a great addition to any book club or literature class. It's also just a really good story. My husband read the book and couldn't put it down. Cuddy presents Penelope as a true hero(ine)--a character whose strength will impress female and male readers. She is a woman who fights for what she believes. Also, if you have never read "The Odyssey" (where readers first saw Penelope), that is okay. The novel stands on its own--as does Penelope.

Lois Cuddy's research and style brought the time, the culture, the rituals and beliefs, and the history of this ancient time to life. The simple, direct language reflected the cursory writing skills of Penelope who shared her feelings, knowledge, and her story. Penelope is a heroine of epic proportions, and as a teacher I highly recommend this "couldn't put it down" book!

The story of Penelope and Odysseus and the family and life they created around the time of the Trojan war. A much different historical fiction story than you might be used to but certainly very entertaining and informative reading.

“Then call we this, the field of Agincourt.” (Shakespeare: “Henry V”) 1415, Davey and Tom, two eighteen- year old lads looking for excitement, join Henry V’s army despite their parents’ and girlfriends’ wishes. The king is determined to regain his lost lands in France, and the two lads, now archers in his army, set sail for France hoping for adventures and the spoils of war. Their hopes of a quick and glorious victory are shattered during the prolonged siege at Harfleur where they witness the deaths of thousands of their fellow soldiers and some of their friends. Eventually, the king’s forces prevail, but now this small and sickly army must march many miles to meet the over-confident French army at Agincourt. Will the dispirited English army have any chance this time? Will our heroes return to England rich and unharmed to marry their sweethearts? Based on much historical research, this novel gives the reader a new and distinctive insight into what it was like to be a medieval soldier at one of England’s finest military events.

It is the story of two young men, Davey and Tom, who decide to sign up to join the army of Henry V. The book is told through Davey's eyes. They are involved in the siege of Honfleur and then in the battle of Agincourt. The history is solid and that was part of my problem with the book. I have trouble believing that two young men, one who could barely read, would have as much inside knowledge of the goings on as these two did. Even some of the stories going back to the battle of Shrewsbury, while extremely accurate and detailed, seemed unlikely as to be known and recounted by these young men.The book is well-written with a few errors such as Uncle Rafe who is referred to as both Davey and Tom's uncle at points in the story. There is also some modern speech (I think Davey says something like 'he's a good kid') that seems inappropriate to the time.I think this is a good book for teens to get them involved in English history and would recommend it as such. I was given this book by the publisher for an honest review.

So far, I have read 6 Million Acusers, which is about the hunt and capture of a notorious Nazi killer, and a couple of other great books I can't name at the moment. Six was a very deep book. Arrows is more juvenile, yet not kiddish in any way. Told from the perspective of two 18 year olds who go to war in France under King Henry V, they quickly grow up, learning that war is not glorious. All they want to do now is get back home safely to their sweethearts and grow old and die in their beds with a bevy of grandkids surrounding them. Before I read this book, I knew quite a bit about Agincourt so I knew where the book was leading. Mr D-Y hit the mark, using his writer's talent to broaden my knowledge even further. I enjoy his writing very much and look forward to his nest writings. The only problem I have with him- he likes Shakespeare. I can't stand the old bard.

“When I was asked to edit All the King's Orphans, I was honored, as I always am to do this work. Little did I know so much of the book would apply to me! Along the way, I started reading for what I could glean from the expansive knowledge contained in these pages. It explained so much about myself and why I do some of the things I do.

This is one of those books whose pages will be underlined, highlighted, dog-eared, and coffee stained. If you do not find yourself in these pages, then you will learn how to love others who operate from an orphan frame of mind. So thankful for this book and Lynette's courage to write it.” -Sheila Harper, author of Survivor: A Journey Through Abortion and Back; founder and president of SaveOne

*** Why am I different?

Where do I belong?

How did I get in this situation?

What is my purpose?

Who am I?

These are the questions that plague many followers of Jesus. Though adopted into His kingdom, millions still carry the spirit of an orphan-unwilling or unable to see themselves as true sons and daughters of the King of Kings.

The orphan spirit manifests itself in various ways, but our Abba invites us to live free of care in the security of knowing who we are in Him.

Lynette writes with an easy-to-read style, using interesting short stories to drive home the points she is making. It's hard to put down the book once you start reading, but one that you can go back to and re-read over and over again. Each chapter introduces a different "orphan spirit" that manifests itself in the lives of God's children. Recognizing that spirit for what it is and then learning to overcome it is a challenge for all.Not only is it a great book for personal growth, it is also a book that would be an excellent choice for a small group Bible study.

By Cheryl I maybe a bit partial since the author is my niece :) I will say that the portions of the book I have read really have touched my heart. Having my mother(and father) honored for the response that they had with my brother, speaking to the tendancy to want to separate ourselves from those who don't measure up. So much of this book has spoken to me. Thank you Lynette for taking a stand and using your voice to speak the truth that Jesus intended.

It really gets to the heart of the matter quickly. The straight talk and easy story telling is refreshing and thought provoking. I need to get it in hard copy so I can lend it out. I want it to be part of my reference library.
