Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are back - and the great detective and his friend are arguing about the necessity of installing a telephone in the house. Sherlock is anxious over the new technology whereas Dr Watson is convinced it will be the future. Watson is invited to visit an old country home, Belmont, along with a variety of other male guests. Connected by their interest in art and literature, Watson soon learns there is more about these men that meets the eye. The tension heightens when one of the guests, Benjamin Morgan, is found dead, stabbed to death by an ornate silver letter opener. The prime suspect is one of the other guests, Mr Gregson, who was the unlucky person who found the dead body whilst he was trying to make a telephone call. Outraged that he is being accused, he is quick to defend himself. But with no other suspects the local police are struggling to catch a break. All leads quickly turn into dead ends until Watson persuades Holmes to travel to Belmont to investigate. Together Holmes and Watson interview the visitors and access the crime scene for clues. However, their initial findings suggest that Mr Gregson is still the guilty man, especially when it is discovered that it was his silver letter opener and he had blood stained trousers. As events unfold, Holmes surmises that perhaps Gregson was the intended victim and Morgan just an innocent bystander who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. But when Gregson is found in a heap at the bottom of the stairs, Holmes and Watson are in a race against time to locate the murderer. Was Gregson faking his attack to convince them of his innocence? Was the original murder from a deluded madman or a crime of passion committed by the guests? Who will fall victim to the telephone murders next? ‘Sherlock Holmes and the Telephone Murder Mystery’ is a thrilling detective novel from bestselling author John Hall. One Action, Ten Thousand Words By Bookmeister A pretty good pastiche of Holmes' and Watson's characters, but very very wordy, with incredibly redundant detail. It is good reading for cases of insomnia, but if you like a lot of stiff upper lip conversation, then you will enjoy this book. No disregard intended on the talent of the writer, but it just took forever to come to closure. If you are expecting Hound of the Baskervilles, you are really getting Driving Miss Daisy.

It was putting me to sleep, and after a while, I simply didn't care who did it, as long as it was over with. I can't recommend it.

Dr. Watson is the protagonist for the first third of the story, then he contacts his friend Sherlock when somebody is murdered. As I said, this story drags a bit. There are enough bright spots in the story to make it a pleasing reading experience. It almost feels like it was added-to to bring the book up to a given length: a Novella that was forced to become a Novel.Still, it's pleasant enough to read and interesting enough to stay with to the end.

Can you ever really know someone's true intentions? In THE FLING, 22-year-old recent nursing graduate Amy is headed to Greece -- much to her parents' chagrin. They want to keep her home in Arizona where they can keep an eye on her. Amy wants adventure, though, and quickly falls for her gorgeous Greek professor, Dimitri. When Amy finds out that her Greek god is married, and meets his beautiful wife, Lydia, she is torn between her attraction and respect for their marriage. Then when Lydia makes Amy an offer she can't refuse, she struggles with the possibility that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Despite her concerns, eventually she gives in to Lydia's encouragement, and Amy and Dimitri's passionate affair is everything Amy has ever dreamed of. What starts out as a breezy summer fling, however, becomes a struggle for happily ever after when the lovers are faced with the ultimate betrayal. They must learn to trust again in order for their love to survive, but is it too much to ask? **This book is intended for mature audiences.**

I love reading about Greece and connected with the main character when I found out she loved Greece as well. The plot was unique and interesting and I can honestly say I didn’t see the huge twist in the story until it was revealed. It was a surprising twist, I must say, and I think everyone will love it!Amy Presgraves has always dreamed of visiting Greece and her dream is finally coming true. Better than that? She gets to visit Greece in a study-abroad program that will further her academic career. She’s things can’t get better, until she meets her Professor Dr. Dimitri Speros—who also happens to be married. Oddly though, it’s Lydia, Dimitri’s wife that encourages her to get closer to the handsome Dimitri and when she does, she’s shocked and thrilled by the passion she shares with the Professor. But what happens in Greece doesn’t always stay in Greece. Dimitri and Amy will face betrayal that will test all their boundaries. Can they make it through them together? Or was the summer fling doomed from the start?I really enjoyed the beginning of the novel. It was a bit slow at first, and I felt at times that Amy was second best in Dimitri's eyes, but I liked learning about Amy and seeing her chemistry with Dimitri when she emailed him and when she met him. You can't deny their chemistry. I even liked the minor characters, which shocks me because of what one of them did. I should hate that person, but I don’t. Well, maybe a bit but I guess that’s what I like about this story. I experienced so many different emotions reading this book and I never knew what was going to happen next! I love suspense in books, especially when I find out the huge twist and never saw it coming.A fantastic debut novel and I recommend it to everyone!

Studying Abroad has its Perks By GC MacQuarie This novel has a hell of a lot of promise, and provides the reader with the one important element of erotica: Lust.Amy is a young nursing student nearing graduation who takes up an opportunity to attend a seminar in Greece. Bored with her day to day life, she jumps at the opportunity of adventure and falls for the professor running the seminar, Dimitrios, a married man. Dimitrios' wife gives her blessing that Amy pursue her feelings and the two embark on an affair. All the right elements are there, however I did feel that it all just happened too easily for Amy. That said, the story really picks up at the halfway point, complete with a dramatic climax. Although I did pick up hints of what was happening, I still enjoyed the outcome of the story, and honestly, it turned out darker than expected. That was a nice twist.Amy's relationship with Dimitrios is sweet and hot all at once. The two exude love and commitment from the very beginning which will have you pining for them until the very end.Written in almost a novella style, The Fling is a quick and enjoyable read. In fact, I could see it adapted into a longer length novel, with more time spent on the building tension between Dimitrios and Amy, and even more on the beautiful backdrop of Greece.Lawson has provided a story of real love at first sight, and hooked us in with a dark twist.I'll be first in line to see what she comes up with next.

I've never read a book by Elle J. Lawson before and I was quite pleased!! It started out with Amy being a student and bored with her current job/life. Her friend sees an opportunity post on a board at work to go study abroad for a week in Greece, which is where Amy has always wanted to go. She applies and gets the chance to go. She meets hunky, Dr. Speros and his wife Lydia when they pick her up at the airport. They are very welcoming to her and I just kept waiting for the bomb to drop, it just seemed "off" to me. Most of what I guessed was correct but, WOW, didn't see part of it coming!! This is a must read book!! No cliffhanger, YAY!

July 1866Shingle Springs, California "Look out, ma'am!"Tess Grimsby jumped back to avoid a fellow about fifteen pulling a baggage cart with far too much speed for the bustling rail station. She collided with a mother herding her four youngsters, causing the weary-looking woman to drop her wicker basket. Several children's books slid across the wooden platform."My apologies. I didn't mean to bump into you." Tess stooped to pick up the books that had landed at her feet. The woman made sure her children were all right, dropped to her knees and reached for a copy of Little Bo-Peep. "It wasn't your fault." She scowled at the baggage handler. "He needs to watch where he's going."The young man parked his cart beside the baggage car and sprinted over to them. "Sorry 'bout that. It's my first day on the job, and my boss said to hurry. I've got to make a good impression." He grinned, reminding Tess of one of the many boys she'd befriended when she lived at the orphanage. She smiled. "No harm was done."A man with a voice as rich as Belgian chocolate addressed the teen. "Be more careful next time. Getting the baggage moved quickly is important, but Mr. Flynn wouldn't want you to endanger our passengers, nor would I.""Right, sir." The lad left."Come, children. We need to get home." The mother took the books Tess had gathered, muttered something about troublesome teens and hustled her children across the crowded platform.Tess slid her satchel back on her shoulder, straightened and found herself face-to-face with a broad-shouldered, golden-haired gentleman. He was younger than any of the men she'd worked for—and far more handsome with his strong chin and arresting sky-blue eyes, currently clouded with sadness. If he was Mr. Abbott—the widower she'd come to see—she could understand. He held out her journal and said nothing for several seconds as he gazed at her, his expression unreadable. No doubt the tall man wasn't used to looking a woman in the eye."Sir?"The frown he'd worn faded, giving way to a hint of a smile that caused her breath to hitch. "I believe this is yours. It fell out of your bag during the commotion.""Thank you." She took the diary from him, its pages so full of her hopes and dreams—as well as the mementos she'd tucked between the pages—that she had to grip it tightly to keep items from falling out. She would add her train ticket to the collection of memorabilia, a symbol of the new chapter in her life she was eager to embrace. "You must be Mr. Abbott, the stationmaster."His forehead furrowed. "I am, but I don't believe we've met."She shoved the bulging book into her satchel. "Not in person, although we've corresponded. I'm Tess Grimsby, Polly's friend. I've come about the housekeeper position.""Ah, yes. She told me you'd arrive today." He clutched a notebook with sun-bronzed hands that obviously did more than complete paperwork, and scanned the platform, where several passengers lingered. "I need to see to a few things. Could you come to my office in ten minutes?""That would be fine." She could use the time to compose herself."Actually, let's make that twenty. I need to see if anyone requires my assistance, and then we can take care of the interview."He certainly didn't sound eager to meet with her. Not that she could blame him. Hiring someone to care for his motherless children could be difficult. "Very well. I'll see to my trunks and meet you there." She should have time to rent a room at the hotel.Tess set off for the baggage area, weaving her way through those waiting to board the train for its return trip down the hill. As the end station of the Placerville and Sacramento Valley Railroad, the depot was one of the busiest in the state. While it handled a great deal of freight, a number of travelers passed through Shingle Springs, too. However, few remained there, which she hoped to do.People watched as she swept past them. Some even craned their heads to follow her progress. As much as she'd like to fade into the bustling throng, she couldn't. Everywhere she went she encountered the thinly veiled surprise and outright stares of strangers. You would think they'd never seen a tall woman before.Peter Flynn, Polly's russet-haired husband who worked at the station, saw her and hustled over, a smile on his tanned face. They made quick work of their introductions."Polly said you were tall, but…" He tilted his head to look at her. "You could dust the ceiling at our place with the feathers on that hat of yours. Just how tall are you?"Most people didn't come right out and mention her height, although she would prefer that to whispers behind fans. Polly had warned Tess that Peter spoke his mind. Since she tended to do the same, she didn't take offense. "Six foot."He whistled a note of surprise, drawing the attention of several freight men, who viewed her with curiosity and made some less than flattering remarks. Indignation straightened her spine. She wasn't that much taller than other women. Why must everyone make such a fuss about a few inches? She lifted her chin and gave the workers the impassive look she'd practiced in the mirror until she'd perfected it. Once she had, she'd pasted it on whenever the sharp-tongued orphanage director maligned her, unwilling to let him see her pain. Nearly nine years had passed, but the recollection of Mr. Grimsby's cutting remarks left a bitter taste in her mouth. Thank the Lord she'd been able to leave the orphanage the day she turned sixteen, having secured a position caring for the children of a family heading West."At least you and Spencer will see eye to eye." Peter chuckled at his play on words but quickly sobered. "And speaking of him, I'd better get back to work. I'll have one of the boys deliver your trunks to the hotel." He doffed his hat and returned to his duties.Standing on the platform in front of the depot, Tess surveyed the small town. Shingle Springs sat at the foot of the majestic Sierra Nevada mountain range, which rose up to meet the cloudless sky. The steady stream of wagons headed east had dug deep ruts in the wide main street. Most of the businesses and houses lining it were made of wood, but an impressive stone building on the south side stood out.She crossed the street and made her way to the Planter's House hotel, a two-story white clapboard building with a balcony that shaded the porch below. With the temperature approaching triple digits, she would welcome getting out of the early afternoon sun.A glance at the watch pinned to her bodice caused her to move quickly. She'd have just enough time to change and dab on some rosewater to mask the lingering smell of the ashes and soot that had rained on her. Not that a railroad man like Mr. Abbott would notice the smoky scent. From what Polly had written, he'd become so preoccupied since his wife's passing he could barely get himself to the depot on time. Once there, all he had time for was work—to the exclusion of everything and everyone else. Tess understood. Grief could immobilize a person. How many times had she seen newly orphaned children go through their days as though encased in a fog?If all went well, she'd soon be caring for Mr. Abbott's two little ones and helping them deal with the loss of their mother. She looked forward to easing their father's burden and helping him cope with his grief, too."If you'll step inside, Mr. Drake would be happy to send a telegram for you." Spencer Abbott directed the elderly couple to his ticket agent's cage and resumed his perusal of the platform.Other than the new baggage handler's mishap, things had gone smoothly that morning. Spencer had been able to eat the meager pickings in his dinner pail in peace while rereading the letters Tess Grimsby had sent.Although she had glowing recommendations from two of the families she'd served, her most recent employer had dismissed her. From what Spencer could tell, the banker had no complaints about her work but had taken issue with her personality. Such things happened. Spencer knew that from experience. But a trait one employer disliked another might value. He believed in giving a person the opportunity to prove what he—or she—could do. Most people showed their true colors fairly quickly. What troubled him more than Miss Grimsby's employment history was his reaction to her. When she'd stood and he'd looked into her eyes, speech had eluded him. Rarely had he encountered a woman that tall. She must be at least six foot, although with her hat the size of Texas, she appeared even taller. While her height had come as a surprise, what had captivated him was the compassion in her warm brown eyes. Clearly she was a caring person. Rather than rail about the young man who'd almost barreled into her, she'd defended him and shown him kindness, which spoke well of her character. A woman like her should be able to take Luke's antics in stride. What had kept Spencer riveted to her had nothing to do with her personality, though. He hated to admit it, but the reason he'd gawked at her like some smitten schoolboy had everything to do with her lovely features, from her delicately arched brows and high cheekbones to her rosy lips lifted in that mesmerizing smile. She was the first woman to capture his attention since he'd lost—Focus, Abbott. He had no business thinking about another woman. Trudy had only been gone three short months. He was a widower in mourning who'd loved his wife, not a man in search of someone to take her place. Not that anyone could. She'd held a special place in his heart and always would. It must have been loneliness that led his eyes to stray, that's all.Well, he was master of his emotions. When Tess Grimsby returned, she'd see a man in control of himself. If he chose to hire her as his housekeeper, he would keep things strictly professional.Tess emerged from the hotel wearing her favorite dress, a cobalt-blue calico that matched the three peacock feathers atop her hat. She tugged on her gloves, crossed the busy street and strolled alongside the tracks until she came to the railway station. The depot was a hive of activity as men prepared for a freight train's arrival. Drivers seated on sturdy wagons waited for their cargo in front of three warehouses east of the station. Horses whickered and shook their heads to rid themselves of the ever-present flies.Although the platform was large, the wooden building at the heart of the action was small. Somewhere inside sat the man who would determine her future. Mr. Abbott must hire her. If he didn't, she'd be forced to return to Sacramento City and pray she found another position before the last of the money in her reticule was gone. She shook the small handbag dangling from her wrist, the jingle of the few coins inside lacking the reassurance she sought. While Polly had said she and Peter would welcome Tess, she couldn't impose on them, not when they were expecting a second child soon.Given her recent dismissal, Tess hadn't been able to secure another governess position in the city, despite spending two weeks searching for one. Polly's letter with news of Mr. Abbott's need had been most fortuitous. If he hired her as his housekeeper and her work pleased him, she'd be able to restore her reputation and replenish her depleted savings.A bell tinkled as she entered the depot. The man in the ticket cage peered at her through the wrought iron grate and smiled. "Good morning, ma'am. May I help you?""I'm Tess Grimsby here to see Mr. Abbott. He's expecting me."The ticket agent nodded. "Welcome, Miss Grimsby. I'm Mr. Drake. I'll let you in."She waited at the door he'd indicated. It opened, and he pointed out another on her right. She paused and said a silent prayer."Don't be scared. He doesn't bite…often."She wasn't afraid of Mr. Abbott, but she was concerned about her reaction to the appealing gentleman. Despite his rumpled frock coat and limp collar, it could be all too easy to cast admiring glances his way, and that would never do. She must act like the professional she was and keep her goal of being hired first and foremost. "Me? Scared? He's the one who ought to be. Men have been known to run from me."Mr. Drake chuckled, the curled ends of his heavily waxed handlebar moustache dancing. "You've got spunk. That's good. You'll need it if you're to work for him. He's a fine boss, but he can be a mite intimidating on his best days. Lately…well, let's just say losing his wife three months back changed him." He inclined his head toward the door to Mr. Abbott's office. "Give it a rap, and he'll invite you in."Tess peered through the small window inset in the door. Mr. Abbott sat at a desk in a painfully clean office with a ledger spread before him and his head in hands. Like Mr. Drake, who had a shock of wiry gray hair, Mr. Abbott had a full head of hair, as well, although his was the color of ripe rye at sunset. Unlike his ticket clerk, who had a ready smile, Mr. Abbott sported a frown, as he had earlier. Not a promising sign. She knocked."Enter."She stilled her trembling hand and opened the door. He jumped to his feet."Miss Grimsby. Please, have a seat." He held out a hand toward the bentwood chair facing his desk."Thank you, sir." She sat, folded her hands in her lap and drew a calming breath. "I trust you received all the documents I sent.""I did." He remained standing, resting his hands on the windowsill with his back to her. Several seconds passed before he spoke. "You're not what I expected."Her nervousness fled. She didn't appreciate being challenged at the outset, but she wouldn't let him fluster her. "Neither are you, but I can do the job, I assure you." She'd worked for some prominent families in Sacramento City, the last one having a name anybody in the state would recognize. The wife of the widely respected banker had written her a letter of recommendation, albeit reluctantly. Not that Tess could blame her. The woman's husband had found Tess's direct manner problematic.Mr. Abbott sat on the corner of his desk with his long legs draped over the side, forcing her to look up. She caught a flicker of feeling in his eyes. Curiosity perhaps? Or was it concern?"Why would you come to a small town when you're used to living among the elite? I lead a simple life, and I don't want my children exposed to any newfangled notions."His manner and tone rankled. If she were to work for him, she'd have to show him she wouldn't tolerate his high-handedness. "I'm a simple person myself, eager to leave the bustle of the city behind. I was most recently employed by a family of means, true, but I hail from humble circumstances."Please, don't let him ask me to explain. She had no intention of educating him about her past. Humble circumstances didn't begin to describe her miserable childhood."Your circumstances don't concern me. But your methods do. I contacted your most recent employer. He said you have a tendency to speak your mind. Is that true?"That was a more tactful description of her supposed failings than the domineering man had used when he dismissed her. "I have opinions, but doesn't everyone?"His blond brows rose, and he pressed a fist to his mouth. She thought she saw his lips twitch, and it gave her hope, but when he pulled his hand away, the frown was there as before. "Can you cook?Mr. Abbott's abrupt change of subject took her aback. "I assume you mean can I cook well, and the answer is yes. I can keep house, do laundry, sew, garden and care for animals, too. But the most important thing is that I'll do all I can to help your children through this difficult time." The Lord had used her to minister to countless youngsters who'd lost their parents, and she could put that experience to good use—provided Mr. Abbott hired her.He folded his arms and took his time studying her, as though she were a horse or a milk cow. Well, two could play that game. She tilted her chin and let her gaze rove over his fine features, drinking her fill.At length he nodded. "I'll give you one week."

By Patti Jo Set in California's Gold Rush country in 1866, FAMILY OF HER DREAMS is a delightful, heart-warming tale that I didn't want to end. Tess Grimsby is a caregiver to two young children and housekeeper for their widowed father, Spencer Abbott. Author Keli Gwyn did an excellent job making these characters come alive in this story, and it was easy to feel I was actually there observing the people and events. Since I enjoy reading historical romance, I was very pleased to read a book with the perfect blend of believable characters, action, and romance. I highly recommend FAMILY OF HER DREAMS and look forward to reading many more books by Author Keli Gwyn. FIVE STARS!!

I love the motion depicted in the illustration -- and the scene perfectly fits the mood of the story. It's a wonderful celebration of dreams -- both the kind you yearn for and the kind that, unfortunately, need to be relinquished to bittersweet memories.Poor Spencer is a grappling with grief in true manly fashion -- that is keep his head down and ignore it. Not an advisable way of coping -- especially for his young children. He hires a housekeeper in the hopes of regaining some order in his life. Cue the gregarious, outspoken Tess. Not quite the gentle, docile woman he was envisioning would bring harmony back to his home. But sometimes God has plans that are greater (and better) than our own. Loved that this story takes place over months -- the reader gets to see a realistic progression of Tess and Spencer's developing friendship. Not to mention Tess's slow wooing of Spencer's surly young son. That boy is carrying a world of hurt on his little shoulders and her love and patience make a profound difference. There are a few really touching story threads that brought a thrill to my romance-loving heart. And humour and action and a dark moment that had my heart sinking down to my toes. In short -- the perfection combination for an enthralling read.

Prince Malachi Van Renssalaer of Mevendia is getting married. The problem? He’s never even met his bride. His father arranged everything, right down to the marriage contract. Malachi swears to himself that he will be nothing like his father in the ways that count - including his fidelity to his wife. Jessabelle Keller would happily spend her entire life in obscurity, but her father once saved the life of a future king. Before he dies, her father is committed to seeing that king make good on his promise to have one of his sons marry her so she would be taken care of for life. No sooner than Prince Malachi and Jessabelle return from their honeymoon, they find themselves dealing with both private trauma and the very public drama of groundless accusations from the press. Just as they begin to weave their fragile trust back together, a ghost from the king’s past arrives and threatens everything they’ve ever held dear. Secrets have a funny way of coming out and this one could rip the faith of the country in their leaders to shreds. Malachi is determined to protect Jessabelle no matter what it takes, but will it ever be enough for her to not feel like a Hand-Me-Down Princess?

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. phenomenal By CGK Hand Me Down Princess by Carol Gammel Moncado is one of the best books I have read in a while. It has romance, mystery, faith, and also leaves room for more and I can't wait for more.Malachi and Jessabelle have never been on a date before they are married and thrust into the crazy life of royals. Jessabelle must learn how to be a princess and a wife all at once and, having led a very sheltered life with little attention or affection from her father, she also has to find her confidence. All of this while the people around her are expecting her to fail. She and her new husband lean on their faith to find their way. This book introduces new characters while keeping us up to date with characters from the Montevaro Monarchy Series.I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. beautifully written By R. H. This story tells how Malachi, a prince, is ordered to marry, Jessabelle, the daughter of a friend of the king who saved his life as a teen and made a promise that one of his sons would marry her. They are thrown together by order and yet Malachi swears he will not follow in his father, the kings, footsteps because he wants to be a good husband to his wife. Jessabelle feels that she could never live up to being the kind of princess that the royal family desires. She has some terrible things happen when she is initially thrown into the public eye. Although Malachi tries to be with her to help her along the way, things occur that are out of his hands and she tends to make a terrible impression her first few times out. What can Malachi do to help his bride, his princess, feel comfortable in her new status as princess and wife to him? Will he ever be able to make her feel like she's not the hand-me-down princess that she sees her self? This is another excellent book by author Carol Moncado! She fills the pages with emotion from laughing at silly things, to sheer joy in wonderful moments, tears in the sad...making you want to finish the book to get all the details rather than putting it down! I strongly recommend this book! Too excited for the next book(s) in this series! I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Just finished this book and I have to say, I've read the whole series up to this point and loved this one the best so far! Malachai - ohmygoodness, he is like the most perfect prince you could ever imagine! I adored his character! I got a little perturbed at Jessabelle at times (lol I love the play on that, since Malachai is a Biblical name, it's like the author took the name Jezebel and redeemed her, loved that it was the combination of two names. awesome.) But Jessabelle's actions would make me stop and work it out in my mind - now why did she say that, or do that? Ok...it's because of...... She was a complex character, indeed, and by the end, I could identify with her and understand where she was coming from. Malachai I loved the entire time. And may I say thank you to Carol for creating this awesome trio of countries and families of royals that are true Christians! I love that practically the first thing they do when something happens is to stop and pray. I'm a practicing Christian myself, and I want to say thank you, because many aspects of these books have inspired me to an even closer walk with Jesus. I loved the insight into the daily lives of the royals, and I loved how very human she makes each one. The only one still cardboard in my mind is William, but I'm assuming he gets his own book, lol. So - kudos to my newest favorite author! Thanks for a job well done!

House of Rejoicing is Libbie Hawker's long-awaited return to the lush decadence and dark power of ancient Egypt. In the waning years of Egypt’s Eighteenth Dynasty, when female power can only come at an unsettling price, four royal women struggle against the shadowy influence of Akhenaten, the infamous heretic Pharaoh. Akhenaten wields control of a strange, emerging religion unlike anything Egypt has seen. His power can’t be denied, but whoever can maintain her grip on the unpredictable Pharaoh will hold all of Egypt in her hands—and better still, will remain mistress of her own fate. Tiy, once the undisputed might behind the throne, must choose to relinquish her hard-won influence, or manipulate the innocent in order to secure her hold on Akhenaten’s leash. Kiya, an idealistic foreign princess, will win Akhenaten with love—if he’s capable of feeling love at all. The celebrated beauty Nefertiti will use the Pharaoh for her own ends, turning the tables of a deadly political game to free herself from her ambitious father’s grasp. And Sitamun, kept imprisoned as the Pharaoh’s plaything, will defy the gods themselves to save her daughter from a similar fate. House of Rejoicing is the first part in Libbie Hawker’s new ancient Egyptian series, The Book of Coming Forth by Day. The story continues in Part Two, Storm in the Sky.

I enjoyed House of Rejoicing as well - until the end By Carrie Engle I have read many of Libbie Hawker books and I feel that she is a gifted writer! I enjoyed House of Rejoicing as well - until the end. I could not believe that she built the book on 4 or 5 people's plans, schemes etc. and I was led along to believe that I would find out what some of those plans were. Then, all of those inter-weavings and plots which made the book so interesting, were just dropped. The end was abrupt and the only way to get any answers is to read the second book. I will absolutely not pick up second book as I assume it will just continue as this one did and then give no answers at all so that readers have to read the third one, then the next one, etc. I realize that this is a style of writing that many authors have used effectively, but in "House" there were way too many loose ends at the end. It left me angry and cold. I have never been so disappointed in a book ending or in an author that I highly respected.

House of Rejoicing (The Book of Coming Forth by Day #1) By Leeanna Chetsko I don’t usually review books I read for pleasure anymore, but I had to review HOUSE OF REJOICING. It’s the start of a new ancient Egyptian historical fiction series set during the Amarna period. AKA when Akhenaten raised the Aten above all other gods.I’m always looking for good ancient Egyptian historical fiction. I’ve read a lot, but I always come back to Libbie Hawker (previously under the pen name L.M. Ironside). I’ve read her Thutmoside saga 3 times, so I was excited to see her tackle Akhenaten and Nefertiti. I like Hawker’s books because she grounds her stories in what’s known, but then makes educated diversions. I also feel like I’ve travelled back in time, thanks to the plethora of details and scene setting. I never feel like I’m reading about modern characters with an Egyptian window-dressing.And then we get to the characters. Hawker takes the classic Akhenaten is crazy approach, but in a way that I found scary. Sometimes when authors go for that angle, he’s just laughable in his craziness. But in HOUSE OF REJOICING, Akhenaten is scary-crazy. And the author lays a better foundation for his craziness and focus on the Aten than I’ve read before, by spending a lot of the book on the end of his father’s reign.HOUSE OF REJOICING is written from the viewpoints of four women. Kiya, a Mitanni princess sent to wed Amunhotep. Tiy, Amunhotep’s Great Wife. Sitamun, Akhenaten’s sister. And Nefertiti, raised by her father to be the next pharoah’s Great Wife. None of these women are fully good or bad; I liked and disliked all for various reasons, and also empathized with all of them. I like the way the author envisioned each of these women. Nefertiti is the ambitious beauty she’s always written as, but here she’s more than that. We see why she supports Akhenaten in his quest to glorify the Aten above all other gods. Partly for her own ambition, but also because she sees how dark the future could be, and that supporting Akhenaten might be the only way to gain any shred of control over him. And so on, with each character. If you like ancient Egyptian historical fiction, I can’t recommend Libbie Hawker highly enough. I’m already looking forward to my next read of HOUSE OF REJOICING, and to the rest of the series.

By Candace Jackson I don't know how she churns out these books with such well researched material and such exquisite and compelling writing. I just love and devour everything that she's written. Her books are so hard to put down and this latest book is no exception. Can't wait till the next books comes out. Well done Libbie!

Seeking asylum from the wreckage of her life, Yvette Grimm arrives in Australia on a holiday visa. She applies for permanent residency with no hope of success. Resisting advice that she marry to stay in the country, Yvette invests her hopes in a palm-reader's prophecy that she will meet the father of her children before she's thirty. She's twenty-nine. Set in the excoriating heat of an endless Perth summer, against the backdrop of asylum seekers locked in detention, Asylum is a gripping tale of loss and belonging that is dark, absurd and hilarious by turns.

Reviewed by Loraine Oliver A Wicked Woman Reviewer By Loraine Oliver Asylum by Isobel Blackthorn was a book I really enjoyed and look forward to reading more by this author. I am getting around to finally reviewing this book even though I finished this book over a month ago, due to being sick.Yvette Grimm, a 29 year old woman has decided to go to Australia to visit on a visa and try to get a citizenship there even though she knows it is practically impossible unless she gets married. So she goes to stay with her mother Isobel and they get along just fine although her mentioning Yvette's sister and comparing the two of them really bothers Yvette.Yvette had a somewhat tragic childhood living with a violent Father and then a broken home after he leaves, and she mainly came to Australia to get away from her boyfriend, Carlos, a likeable man but also a criminal, so she has a lot of issues to deal with, all caused by her own bad choices and being Yvette she rather escape the problems than deal with them, so she takes off to Australia, leaving Malta behind along with Carlos. On top of this she has a tendency to be quite judgmental even though she has so many if not a lot of the same problems as her friends do. Yvette is having a hard time finding her niche in life as she is used to having a man, and functioning without one is quite challenging to Yvette and quite comical at times as well!In this book we see Yvette slowly transforming into a person with a lot more empathy towards others than at the beginning of the book, and she also begins to realize the shallowness her everyday life has been and her problems are ones she created for herself! There may be hope for her yet!I liked the way this author wrote this book and I like how the plot weaves along and things change as the story goes along. I also liked that there were a great cast of characters all well developed that had their place in this book as well. In the end Yvette is more likeable than at the beginning and although her metamorphosis is slow, it is steady and headed in a much better direction than at any other time in her life.I gave this book 5 stars and would like to read more by this author!

A tale of young woman dealing with her past, discovering her own worth, making a place for herself By Tracy Joyce Isobel Blackthorn writes well and in the end I really enjoyed this book. I want you to read that first, because I’m about to tell you that I really didn’t like the main character.I struggled initially with this novel, mainly because I felt no empathy with the main character, Yvette. Let there be no misunderstanding, Yvette is a well written character – so believable that I developed a dislike for her.Yvette has experienced tragedy in childhood - a broken home and a violent father who ultimately leaves. She comes to Australia, on a tourist visa, to escape a relationship with a charismatic criminal she met in Malta. Once here she decides she wants to remain in the country.Apart from her childhood, Yvette’s disasters in life are largely self-inflicted. When the reader first meets her she is self-centred, wallowing in self-pity, unable to define herself without a man in her life and looks on the lives of others with derision. Yvette’s characterisation is excellent and I disliked her so much I wanted to stop reading. It is a testament to Blackthorn’s writing that I continued. Slowly, I could see the character evolving and I really wanted to find out how she would grow. Blackthorn takes a character with no personal insight and transforms her into a woman who begins to recognise her own folly and view those around her with more compassion. Yvette is a far more likeable character at the end of the novel than at the beginning. This transformation is done in an entirely believable way and, in the end, it was this that I really enjoyed about the book – the characters.Blackthorn weaves a lovely bunch of supporting characters into Yvette’s life – each with their own tangled little histories and tragedies. They are part of the catalyst for Yvette’s transformation and serve to show the myriad of ways people cope with their past in contrast to how Yvette deals hers. The only negative for me was that I found some sections of the narrative jarring. Commentary on the woeful predicament and fate of the asylum seekers in Australia came across as being the author’s voice rather than the character’s. I felt this could have been better integrated into the story. In fact, I felt there was unexplored potential in this regard. This is a novel that many will love. It is a tale of young woman learning to deal with her past, discovering her own worth and finding the strength to carve out a new place in the world.I ended up not being able to put it down until I had finished.Four Stars.

By Kelly Haggerty *I would like to thank Odyssey Books via NetGALLEY for giving me an unreleased copy for an honest and fair review. When life does not go the way the Yvette Grimm plans, she seeks asylum in Australia knowing the only way to stay is to get married; as she will not qualify under family unification laws to reunite with her mother and sister. What will happen if she overstays her holiday visa? She is free to roam the country against the backdrop of “legitimate” asylum seekers who have no other place to go and are running for their lives instead of just heartbreak and disappointment in Malta are kept in penal colony like conditions on smaller outer islands from the mainland…?This book rated a 4 for a few reasons. While it was humorous in a sad way at times, it seems that Yvette is destined to stay the same throughout. There is hope that she may do more growing as a character a few times in the book, but she chooses to be herself and remain self-centered and resist change that could be for the better. She chooses to buy into a prediction made by a fortune teller that makes the choices she makes easier for her and lessen what might have been some responsibility at all in her life. I am not sure this is what the author was going for, but, I am hoping this is not the case.Another aspect that bothers me about the subject matter is that Yvette makes all the right noises about caring for the boat people and their actual need for asylum and seeing her own plight as not quite as deserving, however, gets her dander up when she is treated like an “illegal” for not having a state issued medical insurance card. She feels guilty about having the freedom of being on a holiday visa while the boat people are detained and never even see the mainland of Australia on one hand. Then she get quite angry when she is treated the same as any other person with no insurance would be treated by the medical system, so even she sees herself as the same but somehow different.Even with the two exceptions above, the book is quite comical in the way that Yvette acts and sees others and herself. She easily overlooks the log in her eye and is willing to point out the splinter in someone else’s eye. She seems quite willing to overlook the amount of people willing to help her out while feeling quite sorry for herself also, but rallies just in time to let someone else help take care of her. It is a fast read because you cannot wait to see what else she is going to do to further herself from her goals. Is this the novel for you? Do you like your serious subjects with a large grain of salt and a serious side of funny? Do you like to look at topics from a wickedly twisted way that puts normal on its head? Can you watch the main character pass up a number of humorous chances to change for the better and just say not gonna do it? Then this is the one for you.For more reviews[...]

Mary's Quiet Love, by Deborah Godwin

About the Author I hope you enjoy Mary’s Quiet Love as much as I have enjoyed writing it. I live in the Pacific Northwest in the evergreen state of Washington along the beautiful Pacific Ocean. It is a perfect place for my imagination to take hold and grow. I am a single mother to one son and currently to one black cat named “Princess.” My head has always been filled with stories and make believe. Getting a story down on paper for a change and out of my head has been a wonderful challenge that I hope to continue for the rest of my life. I will enjoy reading any and all of your reviews, should you wish to add your opinions of my work. I feel that feedback can only help me to improve my writing skills and become a better writer. By Kindle Customer I think the storyline was very good but don't really like stories that give explicit sexual descriptions. There were alot of clerical errors also.It could have used some more proofreading. Otherwise the story was good and kept my interest to the end.
