After auctioneer Lisa Spencer’s adventures in “Cabbagetown” (Murder in Cabbagetown), she is ready for things to get back to normal. Unfortunately, that also means that business is back to being slow, and the auction scene just isn’t what it used to be. With a sale just around the corner, Lisa is still looking for a headliner of the show to attract the highest bidders, and she may just have solved that problem. She’s found a painting by a renowned Austrian artist, Gustav Klimt, and she’s on her way to meet the owner in a small town just east of Toronto. She couldn’t possibly know that waiting for her is another adventure, this time involving some shady characters, a big wig research association, and even a painter with ties to a WWIIPOW camp. And, as if THAT wasn’t complicated enough, Lisa soon finds herself entangled in yet another murder. At the end of it all, will Lisa finally get her hands on the painting to auction? Business might be slow, but for Lisa Spencer, everything else is anything but...

This time the puzzle takes her outside Toronto to the Whitby area, which I found interesting, because while I thought I knew the area, I’d never heard of Bowmanville’s Camp 30, where German prisoner of WWII were interned. A Klimpt painting is a central mystery, and I'd recently seen Lady in Gold--a desperately dark time in history with modern repercussions. Lots of eccentric characters and an interesting antiques trail, too.

1190 AD. Frederick Banastre has taken the cross, to fight alongside Europe’s finest warrior, Richard the Lionheart, in the Holy Land. But all is not well in the kingdom they have left. To manage England in his absence, Richard appointed three regents: a chancellor and two others who shared the duties of Justiciar. Although Earl John would act as surrogate king, the real power would not be in his hands, or so Richard thought. Bannastre saw evidence of John’s treachery before he left England’s shores when John had attempted to seize Richard’s crusading sword for himself. Only John’s royal blood had stopped Banastre running the cold, tempered steel through his flesh and muscle. Who will protect England from John’s grasping hands once Richard and his loyal supporters have left? ‘Treason’ is the second in a new series of historical thrillers chronicling the world of Richard the Lionheart and King John. The first in this series was ‘Crusader’. "Full of action, intrigue and historical insight." Richard Foreman. Paul Bannister is a journalist and author. His is also the author of the Lord of the Narrow Sea series, which includes 'Arthur Britannicus', 'Arthur Imperator', ‘Arthur Invictus’, ‘The King’s Cavalry’, ‘A Fragile Peace’ and 'Arthur: War's End'. Prodigious research, full of interesting facts of Richard I, King John, and entire Third Crusade / Magna Carta era By Coolfire Our author, Paul Bannister, so timed the publishing of Treason to be during the month of the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta (June 1215 - June 2015), which event is covered in this book. This review is being submitted on the very day of the 800th anniversary, 15 June 2015.Once more, Paul Bannister has delivered a work dripping in both historical events and detailed period descriptions. The research has to have been prodigious for this level of consistent detail. The book just drips of research.Basically, the period covered spans from Richard the Lionheart’s (Richard I, Couer de Lion) third Crusade through the reign of his ill-famed youngest brother John who became King John.As with other Bannister books, this one is no romantic novel, but pure, bloody history as seen through the eyes and experiences of a fictional knight and close friend of Richard, Frederick de Banistre, son of Baron Thurstan de Banastre.Thoroughly based on research, one learns that Richard, although a magnificant warrior, was by no means a Saint, not all nice guy, but could be cruel and selfish, indifferent to the suffering of others, not associated with the battle field. Although the record is still debated by scholars, the most evidence falls upon Richard’s using both men and women sexually. The reader might enjoy using google throughout this epic journey through this portion of history, for Bannister weaves in many of the real players (famous and little known today) and locations (castles, ports, towns, etc.) involved.Details range from such as Bald’s Leechbook and period medical remedies, to why large movements across land would best wait until early summer due to the effect of unripe barley or oats on the horses, very detailed period description of an entire order of march of men, equipment, supplies, the techniques of undermining a fortress wall and some defensive techniques against such, details of armor, siege weapons and techniques, etc., detailed account of Richard’s part in and capture of Acre including the massacre of thousands of prisoners, including women and children, the back and forth campaigns to control not only portions of France but between various Barons and the very unpopular King John resulting in the Magna Carta. Also included are circumstances surrounded the assassination of the valiant and much admired Conrad of Montferrat, evidence pointing to Richard being responsible, and some details of the perfidy of the Christian crusade against and massacre of the Christian Cathars of the Languedoc region of France. Such things of history don’t find much place in typical school curriculums. We live in the dichotomy of one world as defined by school texts and main stream media and on the other hand a real world. And never the two shall meet. I wonder if the undefeated champion William FitzMorris of the story is based on the real undefeated William Marshal of that period, who was quite a guy. As usual, Paul Bannister includes an excellent section of Historical Notes at the end.Anyway, grab your reading glasses if relevant, have your google within reach and open the pages for a romp through the period of the third crusade and the events which led to the Magna Carta, celebrated on this day of its 800th anniversary.

The Sea of Trolls (The Sea of Trolls Trilogy), by Nancy Farmer

Amazon.com Review Three time Newbery honor author Nancy Farmer's epic fantasy, The Sea of Trolls, is gigantic in every way. There are big Vikings and bigger trolls. There are big themes--hope, despair, life and death. At a substantial 450+ pages, the sheer size of this hefty tome is impressive. But, like all of Farmer's fine work, the large scale has room for enormous quantities of heart and humor. At the center of this massive adventure is a small Saxon boy named Jack, who's never been much good at anything until the Bard of his medieval village makes him an apprentice. Then, just as Jack is learning to tap into and control his power, he is kidnapped (along with his little sister, Lucy) and taken to the court of King Ivar the Boneless and his half troll queen Frith. When one of Jack's amateur spells causes the evil queen's beautiful hair to fall out, he is forced to undertake a dangerous quest across the Sea of Trolls to make things right, or suffer the consequences--the sacrifice of his beloved sister to Frith's patron goddess, Freya. Along the way Jack faces everything from giant golden troll-bears to man-eating spiders, yet each frightening encounter brings wisdom and understanding to the budding young Bard. No quester who enters these pages with Jack will go away unsatisfied. Farmer's skillful melding of history, mythology, and humor, is reminiscent of both Tamora Pierce and Terry Pratchett's medieval fantasies, and will no doubt be HUGELY enjoyed by fantasy readers of all ages. --Jennifer Hubert

From Booklist Gr. 6-9. In Farmer's latest, a battle-ax-size fantasy-adventure, rampaging Northmen (the polite term for Vikings) pass through a Saxon village and enslave two of its residents: an 11-year-old apprentice mage and his 5-year-old sister. When Jack offends the Northmen's touchy queen, she threatens to kill his sister unless he reverses a misfired spell--a task that requires a journey deep into icy troll country. The subsequent bouts with troll-bears, giant spiders, and dragons are thrilling, and boys in particular will delight in Farmer's portrayal of the initially terrifying Northmen as tellers of fart jokes and singers of rowdy songs. Lighthearted moments notwithstanding, Jack's archetypal quest is a dense one, heavily draped in Norse mythology, Old English lore, and ponderings about the differences between Christian and pagan cosmologies. In addition, many readers may find it difficult to accept Jack's deepening affection for his frequently barbaric kidnappers, not to mention the oft-repeated message, "All beautiful things attract destruction"--a worldview that comes to Jack straight from the bloody saga of Beowulf. Readers captivated by slash-'em-up Viking culture will happily plunge into this celebrated author's sixth novel, but many members of Farmer's traditional audience will emerge from the experience feeling alternately dazzled and dazed. A Solinas Thrice honored by whoever awards the Newbery award, Nancy Farmer turns her attention from Africa to medieval Norway in "The Sea of Trolls." Weaving legends and fact together, Farmer crafts a thrilling, magical, and hugely entertaining story set in the old Norse legends.Jack was thrilled when the Bard took him on as his apprentice, especially when the strange old man taught him to do magic -- or rather, to "use the life force." (Use the Force, Jack!) But his life is suddenly thrown into disarray when an evil Nightmare drives the Bard mad, and a band of berserkers captures Jack and his little sister Lucy. Now Jack is at the questionable mercy of Olaf One-Brow, who fortunately is pleased to have captured a skald (bard). But things go wrong again as soon as they arrive at Olaf's home. The sullen shield-maiden Thorgil gives Lucy as a present to the half-troll queen Frith, who is initially pleased by the pretty little girl. But then Jack accidently says a spell that reveals the queen's true appearance (and it's not a pretty sight). Now the queen threatens to kill Lucy unless Jack goes to the legendary Mimir's well, and finds a way to reverse the spell. But Mimir's well lies in the middle of Jotunheim, a hideous wasteland full of trolls, dragons, carnivore plants and enormous beasts. It's hard to find a fantasy as textured as this one is. Farmer weaves history (Viking berserkers and the destruction of the Holy Isle) with legends (Jotunheim, trolls, Norse gods and Yggdrasil), and never makes you suspend your belief that it could have been like this. Plus there's a bit of Irish druidry, all wrapped up in the growing friendship between the Bard and Jack. The book is worth reading alone for the Bard's insights into nature and happiness. But unlike many less talented writers, Farmer doesn't make everything simple. The berserkers slaughter or enslave whole villages, yet they can be kind and honorable as well. Same with the trolls. And wrapped up in her grim tale of pillage and slavery, Farmer works in some humor as well. "Just say no to pillaging"? Priceless.Jack evolves wonderfully over the book, turning from an ordinary farm boy into a sensitive, intelligent bard. Thorgil takes a rather long time to become sympathetic, although Farmer creates a realistic background to explain why she's such a pill.Nancy Farmer creates another classic in "Sea of Trolls," a magical blend of history and myth. Remember -- just say no to pillaging.

You're not to join in the fight,' Olaf said." 'Don't worry,' said Jack." 'I know how exciting pillaging is,' the giant said fondly, ruffling Jack's hair. It felt like a blow. 'No matter how much you're tempted, just say no.'" 'Just say no to pillaging. You got it.' "Despite reading some of her consistently award-winning tales, many of you may not be aware of how funny Nancy Farmer can be. But for those who have gotten to spend any time around her it's no surprise to encounter all sorts of terrific humor in her fabulous, fantastical new adventure, THE SEA OF TROLLS. And for anyone who has read Gordon Korman's SON OF THE MOB, with all of Vince's so-called "uncles" bearing wacky names, you'll understand why that book comes to mind as Nancy Farmer introduces us to the likes of Ivar the Boneless, Einar the Ear-Hoarder, Pig Face, Dirty Pants, Eric Pretty-Face, Eric the Rash, and Magnus the Mauler.Eleven-year-old Jack, who had been happily apprenticing with The Bard, and Jack's five-year-old sister, Lucy, are captured and enslaved by the Northmen and head off in their custody to destinations unknown. The Holy Isle that Jack sees through the haze is Lindisfarne. The Holy Isle's destruction in A.D. 793, which marked the onset of two hundred years of Viking raids on Great Britain, provides readers with a historic reference point for this year's great epic adventure story.Farmer packs THE SEA OF TROLLS' 450 pages full of humor, history, mythology, and adventure. This is a deceptively complex story, beyond the mere fact that readers encounter Vikings, trolls, dragons, Beowulf, big-mouth fathers, and all sorts of other good stuff in the same book. What readers (and Jack) are left to sort out at the end of the odyssey are their feelings about the berserkers--those Northmen invaders with whom Lucy and Jack spend all of that time.On one hand, the siblings and the berserkers have all become so close to each other as they share stories, meals, and life and death struggles of immense proportion. Through those experiences, and despite their beliefs and customs being so different from his own, Jack has repeatedly seen and felt their humanity. As readers, we come to know and love the violent and smelly Olaf and Thorgil, and their wild and wacky comrades. On the other hand, even as Jack has to steel himself for having to say good-bye to them, he has to recognize (as we also have to) that the berserkers' intent--indeed their need, if their civilization is to survive--is to return to Jack's Britain again and again, robbing and pillaging and enslaving and murdering and partaking in those other activities that my eighth grade science teacher would repeatedly tell us about. "That's why you're genetically all a little bit of everything!" insisted old Mr. Max Krenis in his white lab coat and spectacles. So how do we as readers feel about the berserkers' need to invade in order to survive? How would we feel if we were Jack? How does "Love thine enemies" relate to the story? How does the Stockholm Syndrome fit in?How will readers relate all this to our being at war right now, and to the widespread suspicion of all people from that part of the world? But there's still more to THE SEA OF TROLLS. In fact, there is a whole 'nother story before Olaf One-Brow and his homies even show up in Britain the first time. The tale begins with Jack and Lucy, their family, and the Bard.Jack's a bright kid with an overbearing father who dotes on little Lucy. The Bard is a mysterious old guy who showed up a couple of years earlier, moved into the ancient Roman house overlooking the sea, and is provided for by the community. One day when Jack is delivering provisions to the Bard, he invites Jack back for lunch. The relationship that develops between Jack and the Bard is so heartwarming that I'd be happy to just keep going back and reading the first portion of the book again and again. The old man takes the beaten-down boy and, as he teaches him song, story, nature, and wisdom, he works to make Jack understand what a special kid he really is. And, oh what stories the Bard does tell him. Then, that time as an apprentice ends for Jack with the arrival of the long ships. And the real journey begins.THE SEA OF TROLLS nearly defies categorization, there are so many sides to it. And I couldn't begin to recount what Shari tried to explain to me about all of Nancy Farmer's allusions to traditional mythologies. But the humor, the excitement and danger, the history, and the characters who are real enough to cause you to really mourn the end of the book make THE SEA OF TROLLS the latest success in the career of one of the great storytellers of our time.

I constantly buy him books hoping he will get interested and read them, since his reading needs improvement. Well, he loved this book so much, he literally couldn't put it down, and finished it in record time, all the while telling me about the story. He even asked me if the author, Nancy Farmer, wrote any more books.

What Family & Christmas is Really About By Blessings N' Bloggings Katie has reluctantly agreed to spend Christmas at Micah's Grandparents home where a large multi-generational gathering occurs each year. Unbeknownst to her Micah has decided to propose and this is where things get a bit more awkward because she says, "No." Cynthia Ruchti writes a great story in An Endless Christmas that begins with what you might perceive as a deal breaker from beginning; however the story evolves into a tale of what family and Christmas should actually mean. You will take a journey with Binder family and find that on the surface they seem like a great Christian family that loves each other greatly but has never suffered any hardships. What you will find as the story unfolds is that they are deeply rooted in their faith and because of this they are able to love each other, forgive each other and act like family should act with one another even when things are difficult.Katie learns what it means to truly be accepted into a family and strengthens her relationship with God. This is a nice easy read, the characters are well developed and you should have a few tissues nearby as there will be tears. Cynthia captures what we all should strive for with our families, not perfection but acceptance and the love, commitment and forgiveness that it requires to keep us close. This book was given to me by the publisher, Worth Publishing for my honest opinion.

You will enjoy a cottage, warm fires, snow, family, tradition, acceptance, love, hope, healing, and so much more. The characters were well developed and their complexity added to the story’s interest.I especially loved the healing that dealing with past regrets brought to characters. The traditions that radiated through the family generations were another favorite of mine.I am sure you will find comfort and joy within the pages of Ms Ruchti’s writing. A truly heart-warming, enjoyable Christmas book!

Based on how short is was. I was left wanting MORE. Cynthia needs to write an Endless book, she is so very talented.I was given a copy of this book by the publisher for my honest review.

I said that a barber had multiple functions long time ago and that his personality did not affect at all. Whoever would do the job had to shave, cut the hair, pull out teeth and bleed, and as a last function he would be a teacher. Let’s remember that by that time few people would fix their own beards, there were no dentists, and surgeons would disdain bleeding surgeries and pull out teeth. It became necessary to prepare the barbers, since they became the essential characters in a half way organized city.

Funny and captivating historical short story about barbers By bookworm This historical short story is about the functions barbers used to have long time ago. By reading this fascinating book I've learned a few very interesting things. For example, barbers did not cut only hair. They were also dentists and surgeons. They usually served the high class people. This book has some really funny scenes too.

Danny Boyle was hoping for a fresh start in Canada. With the help of his uncle Martin, he'd soon found a job and a regular gig with a bar band. And when his sweetheart, Deirdre, joined him, Danny seemed set for life. But Fate wasn’t done with Danny, and when his uncle was stricken with AIDS, Deirdre did the only thing she could think of to save him from the darkness – she got pregnant. Rising to the occasion, Danny became a father with enthusiasm. With the arrival of their second child, though, mortgages, day-care, and the press of the day took their toll on the young couple. Battling the voice in his head that told him he wasn't suited for this role, Danny found an ally in the bottle. Soon, drinking became the only thing that made sense to him. Deirdre, however, refused to give up without a fight. If she could only get Danny to join her, they might even win. The sequel to BORN & BRED, WANDERING IN EXILE is the second novel in the Life & Times Trilogy, a cycle of novels that charts the course of one star-crossed life. Filled with poetic prose and brimming with poignant observation, it is a work of uncommon depth and resonance.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wandering in Exile By Kathleen Kelly Wandering in Exile is the second in the trilogy titled The Life and Times, following Born & Bred which started the story of Danny Boyle. In this installment, Danny moves to Canada to start anew and with the help of his uncle, Martin, a former priest who came out of the closet in Born & Bred, gets a job working gigs out of local bars. Not to create a stereotype but Danny likes his drink and his girlfriend Deirdre gets pregnant hoping that having a child will help Danny deal with the demons that torment him. His beloved uncle is diagnosed with AIDS and Danny takes this very hard and gets deeper into the bottle. There are a lot of characters in this book, among them his parents that still live in Ireland. I first read Peter Murphy's work in Lagan Love which I loved. Mr.Murphy writes in such a lyrical and poetic way that shows that the Irish are great storytellers. I loved how Danny grew from a young man into a husband and father. Even though Danny is a flawed individual, as we all are, and doesn't often make the best decisions, I loved his character. Deirdre is the rock he needs to lean on and she is the person that I think will finally help Danny get rid of the voice's in his head. As with any type of substance abuse, you have to get down to the bottom and work your way up and I have every faith that Danny will do just that. This is an emotional read for sure as we find out more of what torments Danny and how he works through his feelings. I look forward to reading more from Peter, as he is one of my favorite Irish authors. If you enjoy a great story, then this one is definitely for you. I received a copy of this book from the author and was not monetarily compensated for my thoughts.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. "Being Irish is to know the world was meant to break your heart." By Jerry Guild This is the sequel to "Born and Bred" with a third probable to come in the trilogy .Here we see Danny Boyle leave Dublin for Canada. He is to be met by his uncle Martin and stay with him as he gets settled in,in Toronto .Martin also has someone living with him,David, who makes for a different situation. This is a very interesting, different, and emotional story .As time progresses,Danny finds a new love Diedre but doesn't completely forget his other love Billie back in Dublin. The whole novel involves a lot of people and all have issues to deal with in Dublin or in Toronto. As in "Born and Bred",as well as "Lagan Love" Peter Murphy gives a great amount of detail about Dublin as well as Toronto.I happen to to be familiar with both cities and found when he mentioned these details, they brought back many memories.I have no idea about how these details would affect a reader's enjoyment ,were they unfamiliar with Dublin and Toronto. There are a lot of characters in the novel and they are all connected, related or otherwise involved with the main character in the story.Even though all the characters are intimately connected,be they parents, siblings spouses, close friends, children,or whatever,or wherever they happen to be living.I usually keep notes as I read and with so many characters coming and going over the many years of the time period of this novel;I often had to refer to them. Some novels include at the beginning, a list of the characters and a line or two about them that is very helpful to the reader.I really believe that would have been helpful here. While reading this novel;I was always very interested at what was taking place with the characters at the time;while wondering ,at the same time, where it was all heading. This helped keep my interest and thus I had a hard time putting it down,no matter where I was in the story. In this novel, the author has a date on each chapter, starting with the beginning of Chapter I-1977,ending with Chapter 20-1996.This was a period of 19 years from the time Danny left Dublin until the end of the novel.Murphy is an excellent writer and storyteller and the reader's interest is held throughout. I have lived all my life in Canada, except for a few years in the US;some of it in Nova Scotia, some in Montreal and a lot in Ontario; and wherever I was, there were always Irish around. However;there are two words that the Irish use that have particularly always intrigued me;whether in writings or conversation. The first is "brilliant" .This word conveys a much greater meaning for the Itish than it does for others. Then there is the word "bollocks" The Irish have more implications is the use of this word than imaginable. Murphy sprinkles these words throughout the book, but the way he applies different meanings to "bollocks" leaves me wondering how many ways can it be used.I really enjoyed this book, and if you like anything that Brendan O'Carroll ("Agnes Brown"),Roddy Doyle ("A Star Called Henry"),or Frank McCourt (Angele's Ashes","Teacher Man");I'm sure you'll like reading Peter Murphy as much as I have. Since Danny Boyle is still in his 40's as this novel ends,I can't wait to see what the third novel in this trilogy brings...one thing for sure;it'll be interesting.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Emotions Were Stirred By Beth Cutwright Wandering in Exile is the second book in the Life and Times trilogy. The three novels cover the life of the main character and history making events that affected his life and growth. When I finished Wandering in Exile, I had many confused thoughts and questions. I believe I should have read the first novel, Born & Bred and I certainly intend to.Wandering in Exile was aptly titled. The main character, Danny Boyle, was certainly in exile, even if it could have resulted from his own creation. All of us wander in exile from time to time or feel like it and for some it is a matter of permanence. The book addresses the subjects of alcoholism and substance abuse, trying to do better and having to crash rock bottom and climb your way back up again. There were many characters throughout the book going through their own exiles and telling their stories, which was somewhat confusing as well as the chapters where Antho and Martin conversed about their "overseeing" positions from the other side. The book was certainly thought provoking. My best suggestion to future readers though is to start with book one and read the entire trilogy in order to have the best understanding of who the different characters are and their purposes. I believe I wouldn't have been as confused, had I read book one initially. That being said, I did enjoy the storytelling and I found that the author stirred a multitude of emotions with his tale.

By jan I ordered this book as a gift for a friend who is obsessed with DIY homemade healthy cleaning products so when I came across this book I thought it would be perfect. I was very dissapointed once I recieved as all of the cleaning products were basically commonsense and were some version of basic vinegar based. There was not 1 product that they suggested that I did not know of just due to commonsense, I was more hoping for recipes to make products I didn't know of already and I know nothing about DIY cleaning products.

In its first year as a daily cartoon blog on Facebook, Off The Leash developed a regular daily following of half a million dog lovers from around the world, and has become a place where people who are passionate about pooches share anecdotes, pictures and jokes. Capturing the secret thoughts and dreams of dogs, Rupert Fawcett's cartoons are brilliantly observed - and touchingly true to life.

This third book, Off The Leash: It's A Dog's Life, celebrates the wonderful world we create for our dogs - from the gloriously cheeky pooches who steal our sofa space, out-smart cats and wrap us around their little paws, to the adoring four-legged friends who want nothing more than our complete and undivided attention. Featuring dogs of every size, shape and breed, these cartoons delightfully capture the glorious relationships between dogs and their owners.

Set amid the ill-fated metropolis of Saigon during the year before its infamous fall in 1975, The Pearl of the Orient reveals the surprising splendor of Vietnamese culture as witnessed by an aloof Canadian diplomat, Xavier Richmont, who is struggling to overcome his own private tragedy.

But his growing attraction to a feisty Eurasian fashion designer, Tissa, sets Xavier on a collision course with his conservative political views when the US-backed regime uses despicable tactics in an effort to capture Tissa’s brother, a known radical.

Xavier enlists the help of his old friend, a French journalist, and together the two search diligently for clues that will help Tissa find her missing family members. However, their inquiries inadvertently lead them to uncover a secret plot between the United States and the Soviet Union to let North Vietnam overtake Saigon, ending the war once and for all. If Graham Greene's The Quiet American alluded to the beginning of our involvement in Vietnam, The Pearl of the Orient shows us how we rid ourselves of it.

Inspired by appallingly true facts, author and former diplomat Bahram Ameli’s political thriller sifts through the smokescreen of the 1970s to tell a stirring story that brings history and the human spirit to life in vibrant detail.
