The Melungeon Witch series is fun reading with mystery By Drayco6114 The Melungeon Witch series is fun reading with mystery, human insight, romance, and a satisfying conclusion to each story. The "witch" is a unique character who seems very real. She is set apart from the people around her yet is helpful to them and her help is sought by those who know her and believe she has "powers." She wants to attract true love and a normal life yet she cannot give up using what she knows about nature and healing. I want to keep reading the chapters in the life of the Melungeon Witch.

Review Praise for Death of a Robber Baron"O’Brien captures the colorful details and varied characters of an opulent era deftly."—Publishers Weekly"A pleasingly detailed look at the age of the robber barons along with enough strongly characterized suspects to keep readers guessing."—Kirkus Reviews"The author skillfully weaves in fascinating details about American social history. Pair with Stefanie Pintoff, and also recommend for fans of Rhys Bowen’s ‘Molly Malone’ series."—Library Journal

About the Author Charles O'Brien decided to try his hand at writing historical mysteries due to a lifelong love of delving into the past.  James Joyce’s Dubliners and Willa Cather’s Death Comes for the Archbishop have both influenced his writing style. He lives with his wife, Elvy, an art historian, in Williamstown, a small college town in the Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts.

They had a lot of American history in them, and the customs and dress of an era long gone. The writing was direct, and I liked the characters - obviously, Mr. O'Brien knows a lot about the age and cares for his characters. If I have any reservations at all, it's because I am a voracious reader, and have read the very complex "The Girl Who. . . " series by Stieg Larsson recently, and all of the Agatha Christie books, and while I admire Mr. O'Brien's approach, and his knowledge, I prefer more complicated psychological thrillers. I would certainly recommend that people read the trilogy and form their own opinions. I respect anyone who has the gumption and the persistence to write and develop their stories into books. The discipline to write is daunting, so I must "tip my hat" to Mr. O'Brien.

Deputy Slim Shandlin and Judge Isaac Abraham want him in jail. Fellow orphan Lonzo Gillet and washed-out cowboy Clay Lombard trust him as does Lieutenant John P. Bullis and his Black Seminole scouts from Fort Clark. Eva Frazier falls in love with Alex. The Enchanted Castle, by Edith Nesbit

Amazon.com Review A plot summary makes this story sound ordinary by children's literature standards: the summer adventures of four children who discover an enchanted castle and a magic ring. But Edith Nesbit's adored classic (written in 1907) is so much more than the description suggests. Right from the start, the author plays with the idea of magic, teasing us with a sleeping princess who turns out to be a fake. Elsewhere, the magic is "real" as can be--in fact, though written nearly 100 years ago, The Enchanted Castle prefigures the magical realism of modern novels in the matter-of-fact way it weaves the uncanny into the children's everyday life. And, while few authors are confident enough to parody bad writing, Nesbit does it hilariously (and ever so gently) through one character's tendency to "talk like a book": "'To brush his hair and his clothes... was to our hero but the work of a moment,' said Gerald." Things turn scary when the Ugly Wuglies, fake people made from painted cardboard masks, old clothes, and broomsticks, come to life. But on the whole this book about enchantment--much praised by such luminaries as H.G. Wells and Noel Coward--is, simply, enchanting. (Ages 6 and older) --Richard Farr

Review ''The popular British author's adventures of childhood have always been good read-aloud choices; the audiobook format superbly showcases them.'' --AudioFile

About the Author EDITH NESBIT (1858-1924) lived in England and had dreamed of becoming a poet since she was fifteen years old. After her husband fell ill, it was up to her to support her small family. For the next nineteen years, she published a number of novels, essays, articles, poems, and short stories. But it was not until 1899, when The Story of the Treasure Seekers was published, that she achieved great success. Her groundbreaking style of depicting realistic, believable children quickly gained a popularity that has lasted for more than a century. She was brilliant at combining real-life situations with elements of fantasy and humour. Films such as The Railway Children have kept her stories in the public eye and her magical fantasies, including Five Children and It, continue to delight each new generation of children.

As you can imagine, several of them ask, "What do you have that's like Harry Potter?" I always recommend E. Nesbit's books. They never know who I'm talking about. But they usually become interested very quickly.Edith Nesbit was an outspoken British writer who wrote enormously entertaining children?s books in her later years. Many of these books combine normal, everyday children with magical themes or elements. In 'The Enchanted Castle,' three children - Gerald, Cathy, and Jimmy - stumble upon a lush, beautiful garden, where they find a princess who has been asleep for 100 years. Or is she really who she says she is? All the children know is that something strange is going on - like why are the statues moving?'The Enchanted Castle' IS enchanting. The writing is colorful, exciting, and engaging. If your child is looking for something in the Harry Potter vein, the E. Nesbit books are just what the doctor ordered. Kids won't even care that it was written nearly 100 years ago. It still reads pretty well today, and that's what counts.291 pages

My son, age 8, was going to read it himself, but we soon found his sister, age 6, wanted me to read it instead (so I could do the "voices") so it has been turned into the nightly story. The characters: Gerald, Kathleen, and Jimmy are each drawn clearly and individually. My children are fascinated with Gerald's way of speaking as though he were telling a story. And they love Kathleen's way of alternating between being practical and yet longing for all things "magical". Jimmy is funny and endearing, as he is at that age of Not believing and yet eager for adventure. Their friend Mabel is full of mystery and make-believe and soon pulls them into a grand escapade. The author is able to vividly paint each person and each scene. It is with great reluctance we put the book down after a couple of chapters each night, wanting to finish all at once, but wanting the magic to last a little longer. When we finished, we all decided it was one of our favorites. Extremely well written. I did not find even the beginning dull or slow. From start to finish, this is one of the best children's books I've found. And we've read very many.

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Magical By A Customer I first read this book at the age of 10, and have made a point of reading it again nearly yearly ever since, for more than 30 years. It is timeless and magical, and for adults as well as children, as long as they have kept their childhood beliefs in enchantment alive. I am not in the habit of gushing praise, but this is absolutely the best book I have ever read, and has become a part of my children's lives as well. I am so happy to see it in print again. My mother searched everywhere for it in the 60's because I was so enamored with it that I wanted to copy it by hand, if necessary. I am now ordering a new untattered copy to keep forever.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. One of the Most Well Written Books of the Quick Reads Short Stories Series By James N Simpson Perhaps it's the title which has resulted in this book not getting the success of less good short stories in the Quick Reads series. I have to admit, I read over 40 other Quick Read titles before I even picked this up, simply because I initially assumed it was a non fiction book about some little kid's account of what his dad does for a living and maybe how this affects him in some small town or London suburb. Of course the actual story is nothing like that, and it's a fictional tale, not non fiction as I wrongly assumed. And what a great fictional tale it is, one of the best through the eyes of a young child fiction stories I've ever read, in either short story or novel length. My Dad's a Policeman is part of the Quick Reads series of stand alone published short stories. If you're unfamiliar with the Quick Reads initiative, they are books published to increase literacy levels by encouraging those who don't like to read beyond magazines and comic books, to try fiction through cheap priced (current Quick Reads all sell of the rack for under two pounds in the UK) short story length fiction and non fiction. This book definitely achieves the goals of the initiative, anyone reading this book would be eager to check out other Quick Reads short stories or even try full length novels. There are some other short stories in the Quick Reads series which are written through fictional kids eye's dealing with life as as a result of either a deadbeat alcoholic parent or a parent that puts their own needs first over the child. They are Jack and Jill by Lucy Cavendish, The Dare by John Boyne, and The Tannery by Sherrie Hewson.Anyway the basic plot of My Dad's a Policeman picks up with 12 year old Ryan defending the father he's never met in a fist fight, after another council estate child ridiculed his claim that his dad is a policeman and maintained he was just like him, a boy without a father. No one knows who Ryan's dad is, his mother was too drunk and out of it on drugs when he was conceived to even know what he looks like. Ryan doesn't even really have a mother, he does but she's just a woman who lives in the same government funded house as him and his five year old brother. She's an alcoholic, and is pretty much only alive because Ryan looks after her and saves her from herself. Which is what he did when she set herself on fire from her lit cigarette after passing out drunk. Social services have finally decided to act. He and his 5 year old brother have been placed in separate foster homes (to protect his brother from his influence, as he gets into a fair amount of fights and trouble with the police which he wrongfully assumes is why he's been taken from his mother). Ryan is having none of this, he loves his mother and can't see why he they can't stay with her, after all if he's not there who will look after her and what incentive will she have not to drink. He's determined to escape from his Foster home, rescue his brother and start a new life with him in mainland Europe while his mum gets back on her feet and they can sneak back and live with her.The story works because you as a reader know Ryan doesn't have the ability to turn his fantasy into reality. With aspects such as he sees McDonalds as the cheapest way to get food with a supermarket never entering his mind, you are hoping he won't be successful in even the beginning of his plans. You of course know the dangers that he and his brother might run into, which he of course doesn't know the full extent of. The author Cathy Glass is a real life Foster mother bringing authenticity to the foster carer house scenes, as well as social services chapters. Glass is usually a non fiction author of similar tales, this is her second work of fiction following The Girl in the Mirror. This short story was so well written, I'll definitely be checking that one out.At the back of the book Glass also provides a link to her website where she provides an encore couple of paragraphs update follow on to this story where you learn of what happens to Ryan up to the age of 22. It is worth checking out and is good because it is realistic and not a fairytale happily ever after type ending.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Runaway By Lance Mitchell Cathy Glass is a foster parent, so she writes this story based on experience.Ryan never knew his Dad, but he has to tell people something, and that something is in the title. It transpires that his mother may not even know who his Dad was, as he and his much-loved brother, Tommy, were both conceived during drunken one-night stands. His mother is almost ALWAYS drunk.Ryan is taken into care, and is separated from his brother. He makes plans and runs away. His best friend takes a risk to harbour him.The pace is fast, and it is easy to read the whole story in one sitting.I liked this even more as there were reflections of my own childhood. No, my mother was not forever drunk, and I was not taken into care. But my parents split up when I was very young, and I was forever running away. I like to think that those experiences enhanced my education. This is a good story, and it could easily have been extended to show what happened to the various characters in the following years. Perhaps Cathy Glass will write that story some day.

Commander Peter Wake, of the U.S. Navy’s Office of Naval Intelligence, is in New York City in 1886, where he meets two intense young men who will dramatically influence his life: Theodore Roosevelt and José Martí. Presented with a secret coded message, he deciphers it for Roosevelt, and soon wishes he hadn’t. Returning to Washington, he is assigned to follow up on the secret message and uncover the extent of Cuban revolutionary activities between Florida and Cuba, along with investigating rumors of Spanish government agents operating in Key West. The investigation takes Wake to places he thought he knew so well: Havana, Key West, Tampa, and the islands of Florida’s southwest coast. But the further he delves, the more he realizes how much he doesn’t know, and is drawn inexorably into the center of the most catastrophic event in Key West history, when over half the city was destroyed. And at the end, Peter Wake makes a decision that may well shock his readers―-one involving the very darkest shade of honor. The Darkest Shade of Honor is the eighth in Robert Macomber's Honor series. Other novels in the series include At the Edge of Honor (winner of the Patrick D. Smith Literary Award as Best Historical Novel of Florida), Point of Honor (winner of the John Esten Cook Literary Award for Best Work in Southern Fiction), Honorable Mention, A Dishonorable Few, An Affair of Honor, and A Different Kind of Honor (winner of the American Library Association Boyd Literary Award for Military Fiction), and The Honored Dead.

The Darkest Shade of Honor (Honor Series), by Robert N. Macomber

From Booklist The eighth volume of the Honor series, which follows the career of an American naval intelligence officer, Commander Peter Wake, is set in 1886. The story begins in New York City, where a meeting with naval historian and rising politico Theodore Roosevelt sets in motion a chain of events that take Wake to Cuba, where he risks his life trying to put a lid on revolutionaries operating between Cuba and Florida. Faithful readers might recall that, with the seventh entry in the series (The Honored Dead, 2009), the author switched literary gears, shifting from third-person to first-person narrative. He continues that approach here, presenting the story as though it were written by Wake himself, years after the events. This device removes the element of immediacy (we know the story took place nearly a decade ago, so reducing suspense) but adds depth to Wake’s character, allowing us to see more of what goes on beneath his surface. A solid entry in this popular series. --David Pitt

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Great Read By Ronald R. Wesorick I have read and enjoyed all of Bob Macomber's "Honor" series. This was one of his best. It was interesting and action filled. It was great to find Peter Wake back in Southwest Florida. The different incidents and coastal areas where the story takes places made it especially enjoyable. Learning about Florida history along with some of the roots of Cuban independence, and meeting a young Theodore Roosevelt made it all the more fascinating.

Macomber once again spins an historically accurate and fascinating story as Peter Wake of U.S. Naval Intelligence finds himself deep inside the beginnings of the Spanish American war of the late 19th century. Wake gets a new friend and protector in Theodore Roosevelt and also meets an icon of the Cuban revolution.Another must read for historical fiction fans!

The Geometry of Love, by Joan Fay Cuccio

Amazon.com Review With an eye attuned to the minute details of mundane life, Joan Fay Cuccio directs her poetic voice to a hardscrabble story. Darcy, the protagonist, stands in a phone booth and "thread(s) the coins through again and again in a small song, getting the number right on the third time, letting the call hook up. You are waiting outside smoking a cigarette against the heat of the day. I watch you pacing the curb, hitching up your jeans on the narrow knob of your hips.... " The "you," we learn, is Frank, the violent husband she is fleeing--the same "you" to which the entire story is addressed.

The Geometry of Love tells neither a pleasant nor an easy story. A moment in the present, an object, or the smallest gesture--washing her hands in a gas station bathroom--triggers memories of a hard past: her father's death, the subsequent hardships, her abusive marriage to the violent, mendicant Frank. In her first novel, Cuccio examines the simultaneity of love and abuse, humdrum and stolen pleasures, and a woman's process of integrating her painful past with the difficult choices of her present.

From Publishers Weekly Darcy Johnson Wilson is fleeing Frank, her estranged husband, whom she left lying in the smashed wreckage of her kitchen in San Antonio, Tex., and is heading north toward the Oklahoma farmland of her lonely childhood. As the empty miles of road pass beneath her tires, Darcy sifts through a jumble of fragmented memories?her conflicted love for the mercurial and violent Frank, her short-order job at Jake's that provided a surprising solace, the bedraggled little house on a weedy cul-de-sac, her impulsive elopement?to find that at the core of her character lies the loveless drama of her parents' marriage. Shifting back and forth in time, Darcy examines the Chinese puzzle ball that is her life, searching the seamless surface for the patterns that will explain her predicament. She sees herself as the frigid planet Pluto revolving in inky blackness far from the imagined warmth of her mother's frustrated and angry sun. Exchanging her mother for Frank as the center of her universe, Darcy soon discovers that an object in orbit too close to the sun will burn in the star's raging heat. As Frank circles her house, calling to her and trying the locked windows and doors, Darcy huddles on the hallway floor. Terrified and yet yearning for love, she suddenly tears free of the imprisoning orbit and launches herself toward a shocking and painful freedom. In her debut novel, Cuccio demonstrates a gift for the lyricism of simple language. She constructs the invisible walls of emotional isolation with the delicate surety of a master glassblower, trapping inside the remarkably unself-pitying Darcy, from whom shines a halting courage and an uncommon longing that will disturb the reader for a long time. Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews Cuccio makes a laudable effort on her first outing to embrace armfuls of life and get them onto the page, but her indisputable moments of brilliance are often dimmed by overwriting and conventional dramatics. Darcy Johnston, a Texas farm girl and dropout, believes that ``Love is born crooked, it is . . . not planar at all but something quite out of phase with the solemn procession of everyday life.'' So it is that the story Darcy tells is nothing like a straight line. On the third page, she alludes mysteriously to the cruel yet much-loved ``you'' whom she's finally broken up with--and also forbodingly to ``the pistol''-- then embarks on an often rather pleasant journey back and forth from adulthood to early childhood, early childhood to mid-adolescence, mid-adolescence to--and so on. Gradually we learn that her father has died (though only much later how and of what), and gradually that her dourly cruel mother, after her husband's death, opened the family's old farmhouse to boarders (and herself to them, too, becoming ostracized in the disapproving community). One of these boarders is the fierce and rattlesnake-mean ``you'' whom Darcy becomes entangled with, marries, and suffers under for so long that all you want to do is grab her shoulders and shake some sense into her. But it'll be a long slow time before she makes a move, with much that's admittedly beautiful along the way (``The world is quiet but for the sound of the tractor in the field. The breeze comes in from the window cool and blue''), but also much that's over-similed or maundering (``Let's see how far we can take this. Could we, for instance . . .'') in the approach to an ending that, well, ought to have been avoidable altogether but that will without question raise you from your seat. Debut work that's often muddled but that at its best can be superb. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

By A Customer Vivid metaphors, a complex narrative, rich characters, and keen observation of life in small towns at the bottom of the plains all come together beautifully in this first novel, which I recommend highly. Short, smart, and accessible, it would make a fine assigned reading for a course on the modern American west or in women studies.Randy Lewis
